Video: Israeli soldiers harass Palestinian elementary school teachers and students in Hebron

Some children in Hebron have difficulty getting in and out of the school because of an Israeli military post and gate about 30 yards from their classrooms. During October and November 2017 the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem found four instances where Palestinian students and teachers at the Ziad Hamuda Elementary School were stopped, searched, and abused on their commutes. In at least one incident clashes broke out near the school with children filmed by field researchers fleeing from white plumes of tear gas.

“Occasionally, and unpredictably, soldiers stationed on the scene conduct random searches of passersby,” B’Tselem said in a statement today. Some students told the group they were stuck by soldiers when attempting to enter school, adding that a settler stood nearby recording the children on his phone.

A.J., 12, a 7th-grade student, told B’Tselem field researcher Manal a-Ja’bri:

As soon as we passed through the metal gate, we saw about six soldiers together with a settler. He photographed us with his cell phone. I asked him, ‘Why are you photographing us?’ And then suddenly a soldier attacked me. He was in a bad mood and had a bottle in his hand – I don’t know what was in it, maybe juice or maybe something else. He slapped me on the back of my neck. Then another soldier got involved and pushed me toward the wall. Then a third soldier intervened and moved them away from me, allowing me to leave the scene. […] Since then I’ve been afraid to go to school by myself […] The other students are also very afraid to leave school at midday because the soldiers bother us.

A teacher at the boys school, Muhannad a-Za’tari, 35, said the searchers and delays in entering and exiting are on-going:

“Over the past few years, the soldiers have entered the school on many occasions. They frighten and scare the students, and this has an effect on their academic achievements and their psychological condition. They also frequently search the children’s bags and even detain them. As members of staff, we also suffer from searches and have been delayed several times in the past as we passed through the gate that leads to the school. The situation also has an impact on the number of children who are registered for the school, because families prefer to avoid exposing their children to all this.”

“These incidents illustrate the casual manner in which soldiers can threaten and intimidate dozens of school students and several teachers, disrupting routine studies,” B’Tselem said, “These are not isolated or exceptional incidents, but an integral part of routine life in Hebron, where Israel has established several small settlement clusters within the heart of the Palestinian population.”

Hebron is the West Bank’s largest city. It is home to around 200,000 Palestinians, and 700 Israeli settlers. In 1997 the city was divided in two, with Israeli forces controlling most of the Old City, and the reminder under the control of the Palestinian Authority.

are these soldiers “inciting” these children..or educating them

“There is a belief advanced today, and in some cases by conservative black authors, that poor children and particularly black children should not be allowed to hear too much about these matters. If they learn how much less they are getting than rich children, we are told, this knowledge may induce them to regard themselves as “victims,” and such “victim-thinking,” it is argued, may then undermine their capacity to profit from whatever opportunities may actually exist. But this is a matter of psychology-or strategy-and not reality. The matter, in any case, is academic since most adolescents in the poorest neighborhoods learn very soon that they are getting less than children in the wealthier school districts. They see suburban schools on television and they see them when they travel for athletic competitions. It is a waste of time to worry whether we should tell them something they could tell to us. About injustice, most poor children in American cannot be fooled.”

@gamal: They are definitely inciting these children. The entire occupation is an incitement. Even a dog would have enough awareness to understand that he was being intentionally mistreated. The mistreatment and violence that is endemic to the occupation naturally leads to anger at that mistreatment, and rebellion… so, yes, it is incitement. It is intentional, in my opinion… the soldiers have been instructed to make lives miserable for the Palestinians in order to “show who’s boss”, in order to try to encourage emigration, even in order to intentionally incite small riots that can then be used as justification for the use of overwhelming force “to restore order” (actually, to further punish and demoralize the civilian population, and maybe kill a few as a way to help with the “demographics”).

Actually, the series of video clips show Israeli soldiers in a good light. The area in Hebron where these videos are taken, is a very small section of the city. The vast majority of Arab citizens in Hebron have a free and open city. Those who have been there, the honest ones that is, will testify to this. Now in the small section of the city where Arab kids throw stones on a daily basis, there is tension. Stop throwing stones and life will look a whole lot better. The Arab school principle is unable and unwilling to control the kids and may even be provoking them himself. His position depends on obeying Hamas in the area.
I say well done to the Israeli soldiers.

Your message to the victims chained in the rapist’s basement:

Where some of you try to harm the rapist on a daily basis, there is tension. Stop trying to harm the rapist and life will look a whole lot better.

      Very inspirational.

There are 400 million Arabs and over 1.6 billion Muslims in the world today. There is one Jewish state with about 6.5 million Jews (about 0.5%). And all the Arabs (most) and all the Muslims have either taken up arms or supported whipping Israel off the map. The Arabs and Muslims have invaded the land now called Israel multiple times. Just who is the rapist here?

So what? There are only ~800,000 Wiccans in the world today and there is no “Wiccan State” but you don’t see Wiccans committing (war) crimes with impunity.

        || … Just who is the rapist here? ||

The rapist is the one doing the raping which, in the case of Hebron, is the “Jewish State”.

        Emmet,

Obviously the “rapist” is the Zionist entity. See how many millions, even billions of people, of many different religions and languages, you yourself acknowledge at being upset at the Zionists’ rape activity? But then there are many billions more. Enjoy.
Get out while you can do so cheaply –this is a friendly suggestion.

        eljay,

I would love to live the end of this situation, but with a slight modification of your comment:

«The rapist is the one doing the raping which, in the case of Hebron, is the “Jewish State”.»

The rapist is the one doing the raping which, in the case of the State of Palestine, is the “Jewish State Thief”.

Trump and his Jewish son-in-law might go ahead and purposely start the process that will start a third intifada, and we’ll count, once more, Palestinian deaths by the thousands, while the Isreali will claim receiving THOUSANDS of man-made uncontrolled rockets on the head, again causing very few Israeli victims. The lie must go on…

That’s your problem, “Emet”. One Israel made for itself.

Gee, one would think that Zionism would take those factors into account. I thought Zionism had it all figured out?

Sorta takes your breath away, donnit? I mean the way a Zionist can change everything with just one sentence. That power to change reality must come in awfully handy when you’re making the desert go boom.

Actually, the series of video clips show Israeli soldiers in a good light

because it’s perfectly normal and rational to have the israeli army respond to allegations of children throwing rocks. because why shouldn’t a states military set up a checkpoint in front of an elementary school to monitor children? nothing bout this shows anything “good” about this military occupation.

anyone who finds “good light” in this story is delusional at best. likely sadistic, and pedophiliac at worst. harassing children is a form of manipulating adults who care about those kids. it’s a threat much more powerful than a 6 year old with a rock.

this situation is disgusting and shameful.

But “Emet’s” analysis of the situation is so, well, sophisticated. And objective, and oh, so impartial, not influenced by any kind prejudice.
And so emotionally attractive, too. So balanced. It’s so hard not to fall in with it, while falling in love with the author, too.

“Stop throwing stones and life will look a whole lot better.” Get out of their land and their lives will be much better. Their lives are not their own, they live at the whim of the zionist terrorists. F#$% you and your stupid remarks.

P.S. Israeli ‘soldiers’? What army are they fighting – children, babies, old men and women? They kill them only because they can and without having to suffer any consequences. It will be interesting to see how brave these little bitch toy soldiers will be when the field is level and they face a real army, real soldiers. Not civilians.

As the zionist squatters in hebron know, they can throw rocks and blame a palestinian kid going to school. This is nothing but a farce. The ‘soldier’ asking the principal ‘who threw the stone’; seriously? What bullshit. It’ll be over soon.

Oh, they are Israelis? I thought they were Iranians, because Netanyahu said that Iran is another Nazi Germany.

The one conquering the land through war in the post Nazi era.

No Emmet is right. There is only one Jewish state just as there was once only one Aryan state. In fact there is only one Apartheid state too in the world and it also happens to be the only Jewish state.

Of course there are some people who, no matter how terrible the repression, can always find some justification for the oppressor. I am reminded of Viscount Rothermere, owner of that esteemed British newspaper the Daily Mail (& then also the Daily Mirror) who took a trip to Germany in 1933 to meet his good friend one Adolf Hitler (who at that time was considered a ‘moderate’ in the Nazi Party!) and wrote articles on his return about how the violence against the Jews was much exaggerated and got up by that nasty left press. Plus ca change.

It’s like a reverse “Ben-Hur.” A mysterious rock comes down on the occupying army, justifying detention and humiliation. Maybe the Weinstein Brothers will bankroll a sequel?

I’am sure the Nazis taunted many Jewish victims too. The arrogance, and viciousness, of those in power, especially those who carry the big guns, is disgusting. They must feel very “tough” picking on helpless people, people who can’t fight back.
It truly shows who THEY are, and it is ugly.

When people objecting to BDS say it’s an infringement on academic freedom, show them this video. If this isn’t an attack on academic freedom, I don’t know what is.

Brave Soldiers! How proud Israelis must be! A light unto nations, the purity of arms. All there for everyone to see on video.
