BDS

Several BDS groups, including Adalah-NY here, have called for boycott of the Israel Ballet’s tour to Florida and the Northeast this month. The groups say that the ballet is part of the government’s rebranding campaign–

The Israel Ballet, which receives around $1 million annually from the Israeli government, is being advertised as a cultural ambassador of the state by the Israeli Consulate in New York. The dance group also boasts holding “special performances” for Israeli soldiers.

and say that the ballet never condemns the occupation, and also make this argument, which is especially compelling:

[Ballet founder Berta] Yampolsky continued, “We don’t care what religion or nationality you are, as long as you are a good person.” Yet none of the dancers, board members, or staff listed on the Israel Ballet website are Palestinian, though Palestinians comprise 20% of Israel’s citizenry. Furthermore, the Israeli government systematically discriminates against Israel’s Palestinian citizens, including providing less funding for Palestinian citizens’ cultural and educational activities. Palestinian artists in occupied Gaza and the West Bank fare even worse. The Ramallah-based Palestinian dance troupe, El-Funoun, must continuously contend with Israel’s ongoing occupation, and its members have faced military roadblocks, military curfews, random arrests, injury, performance closures and travel bans.

That’s not fair. That’s redolent of Jim Crow days. And certainly doesn’t seem very democratic.

Gehry… Santana… chain reaction?

by Philip Weiss on February 2, 2010 · 250 comments

Last year architect Frank Gehry withdrew from the Museum of Tolerance project in Jerusalem, under pressure because the site was an ancient Muslim cemetery. Now Carlos Santana has canceled a June show in Israel under pressure not to perform in the society that produced Gaza. Ynet:

Guitarist Carlos Santana reportedly received messages that "it’s better" that he not perform in Israel, according to what a senior official in the Israeli music production market involved in producing Santana’s show told Yedioth Ahronoth… Sources in Israel’s music industry hope that Santana’s cancellation does not create a chain reaction.

‘NYT’ moralist-columnist leaves himself no room to oppose BDS

by Philip Weiss19 January 2010

"[NYT columnist] Nicholas D. Kristof On Martin Luther King Day [at facebook], I wish more Palestinians would absorb the lessons of King and Gandhi and use non-violent but confrontational approaches in challenging settlements, etc. Non-violence is not only morally superior to terrorism, it’s also more effective in challenging a democracy."

by Barnabe Geisweiller18 January 2010

"It was meant to be a historic non-violent protest in Gaza against Israel’s blockade. But forces are quick to converge in the Middle East against those who work for peace."
The author of the following report, Barnabe Geisweiller, a Canadian student at the Columbia Journalism School who has lived in Palestine, went to Egypt [...]

The Jewish community is going to have to grapple seriously with BDS and the issues it raises

by Adam Horowitz23 December 2009

The Forward asked some notable Jews to reflect on the last decade and share its legacy. Stuck between hated nods to the Palestinians from Elliott Abrams and Ed Koch (now there’s a coalition) is this gem from Alisa Solomon:

A Boycott Builds

After years of building slowly, the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement has [...]

BDS news: An English collegiate choir has had an invitation to sing in the Occupied Territories rescinded by the Anglican bishop because it is singing in Israel:

According to one of those involved, the PA asked the Bishop of Jerusalem to withdraw the invitation for the choir to sing in East Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
The choir [...]

Israeli government convenes working group to battle BDS

by Ben White16 December 2009

This week, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs is sponsoring a conference aimed at "combating antisemitism" in Jerusalem. It’s interesting to see a conference apparently about tackling racism being co-chaired by Avigdor Lieberman. The other co-chair is a Likud MK who lives in a settlement in the Occupied West Bank.

One of the conference’s working groups [...]

Some boycotts are kosher

by Philip Weiss15 December 2009

The "Lobby for Jewish Values" in Israel is pushing for a boycott of restaurants and hotels that put up Christmas trees. Some rabbis are down with it. There’s a quote about the "Jewish soul" and Torah I couldn’t get to the end of… h/t Eva Smagacz

BDS can succeed (says Islamophobe in synagogue)

by Philip Weiss10 December 2009

When I was a kid in Baltimore we respected the Gordis’s. The father was a scientist named Leon, just like my dad, but he was a serious Jew. His father was a big rabbi. We went to their seder once or twice, and couldn’t keep up with the formality of the ritual (compared to my [...]

British gov’t caught snogging with BDS

by Philip Weiss10 December 2009

Haaretz:

The British government has issued an official recommendation urging business owners to mark Israeli products produced in West Bank settlements so that consumers who want to boycott such items will find it easy to identify them.

The recommendation is not binding, but this step marks an escalation in the country’s attitude toward Israel’s settlements. [...]

Reflections on the BDS conference at Hampshire

by Philip Weiss26 November 2009

The spirit of the Hampshire College conference on Boycott Divestment and Sanctions that I attended last weekend is captured by Adam Horowitz’s post of Sunday. There was a stirring sense of youthful leadership, and a sense that the left in America can no longer seek to divorce itself from the cause of Palestinian self-determination. No, [...]

Ali Abunimah’s speech at Hampshire

by Philip Weiss25 November 2009

The highlight of the Hampshire conference on Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions was a speech by Ali Abunimah on Saturday night. An amazing performance, it begins with a great joke about Prilosec. Very Borscht Belt. Myron Cohen used to do heartburn humor, Abunimah tops him. We’re hoping to get a text transcript of this speech up [...]

Delegitimization is moving fast. What next?

by Ahmed Moor25 November 2009

As I read the news surrounding developments in Palestine/Israel I’m astonished at how quickly the political landscape has changed and continues to change, and the future of Palestine/Israel is as unclear as ever. Making predictions about the future is risky business, and I don’t presume to know enough to do so. But one feature [...]
