Mondoweiss is necessary—so Israel can’t silence me and other Palestinian journalists

Ahmad Kabariti on

Mondoweiss contributor Ahmad Kabariti shares a personal story of being pressured by Israeli officials to share information with them in Gaza. He says it shows the power of adversarial journalism and the need to support news outlets telling the truth about what is happening in Palestine: “Just about every Palestinian journalist has had at least one experience similar to mine. Israel’s attempts to neutralize our profession take many forms, from bullying to physical force to bribes. I’m sharing this part of my personal history to help Mondoweiss’s readers understand how vital it is as an avenue to broadcast our reporting—to defy the efforts to silence us. I am asking you to show your solidarity with our work by donating to Mondoweiss to support publication of our journalism.”

Support Mondoweiss to keep brave journalists reporting news

Philip Weiss and Adam Horowitz on

Recently a Mondoweiss writer based in Palestine told us, “Anyone working in the country who describes the state’s repression of free speech is risking being kicked out for good.” You know that we who fight for justice in Palestine are tearing down the wall of lies brick by brick and that every effort to silence the truth shows the urgent need to invest in more truth-telling. We ask today that you donate to help Mondoweiss continue and increase our work informing the world of what happens in Palestine, and how U.S. policy underwrites the oppression. Every time Israel’s guardians lash out to silence truth, their fear testifies that our reporting is making a difference. Please give today to help us keep them shaking in their shoes.

Reporting spreads Resistance

Muckraking journalist George Seldes said it best: “The truth is not in the commercial media because the truth is a dagger pointed at its heart, which is its pocketbook.” Today is the last time this year that we will ask for your donations to maintain and grow Mondoweiss’s independence and leadership in defining, documenting and strategizing resistance to injustice. (If you have already donated, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!) Today we also follow the Mondoweiss tradition of ending each year by listing the year’s posts that received the most views. We present the top stories of the 1500+ published in 2016—a very diverse group. And this year our look back goes beyond a quantitative list to highlight the pieces that make us particularly proud.

The power of BDS — and the importance of Mondoweiss for growing the movement

Nada Elia on

Scholar-activist Nada Elia writes: “I believe that BDS will play as important a role in restoring Palestinian rights as the global boycott of South Africa did in ending apartheid there. The BDS movement will achieve its full potential impact through mass information—by more and more people learning how they can advance the movement, and by corporations and governments understanding the breadth of BDS support. This is where Mondoweiss plays a pivotal role. In recent years, the growth in our movement’s success has been enabled by constant reporting and opinion pieces published in Mondoweiss, where they reach hundreds of thousands of readers regularly. I urge you to join me in supporting Mondoweiss as a key movement tool. By connecting those of us building power, Mondoweiss makes a difference that is essential for any hope of justice in our lifetime.”

Resistance through culture: How Mondoweiss alerts the world to defiant art and culture

Felice Gelman on

Activist Felice Gelman writes: “What’s allowed Palestinians to endure under a hostile and oppressive rule for seventy years? I’ve been involved with the Palestinian struggle in many ways and I know that one of its most important elements is culture. Culture is where the heart speaks. I’m writing today to highlight the essential work of Mondoweiss in covering art and culture in Palestine, and to ask you to join me in supporting that work.”

My journey connecting indigenous movements: How Mondoweiss broadens our understanding of the struggle

Nadya Raja Tannous on

Nadya Raja Tannous writes, “On my trip to Standing Rock, I saw a kind of overarching control, surveillance and government force that is horrifyingly similar to life in occupied Palestine. Because of Mondoweiss, what I saw on the ground in Standing Rock reached communities who could not witness it themselves. Please join me in donating to Mondoweiss to support their commitment to covering real news on pertinent issues that mainstream news outlets don’t cover.”

Reporting as resistance: How Mondoweiss spreads the work of brave journalists

Diana Buttu on

Diana Buttu writes, “If we are ever to awaken the world to what Israel stands for, we will do it with the power of our stories. I respect enormously the ability Mondoweiss has developed to gather these stories and share them more broadly all the time. By reaching millions of people each year, Mondoweiss is taking on the responsibility the mainstream media shirks: educating the public about Palestine. Join me today in growing Mondoweiss’s influence.”

Resistance to mainstream media: How Mondoweiss pushes back against distortion

James Zogby on

James Zogby writes: “Since the 1970s, I’ve been involved with advocacy for Palestinian human rights and have sought to inform the discourse in the United States about Palestinians and other Arab concerns. So I know what it takes for Mondoweiss to persist in publishing ground-breaking analysis and corrective journalism in the face of hatred, scorn and discrediting. I appreciate Mondoweiss as a vital source of truth, and I have contributed to sustain and grow the site’s valuable work. I’m writing now to urge all of you to join me in keeping Mondoweiss on the job.”

Organizer Laila Abdelaziz writes: My activism has taken me from my state’s legislature to the White House, from national conferences to small community meetings. And in all these contexts—state, local, national, international—Mondoweiss’s reporting has been essential to connect those of us in the struggle. As a Palestinian American, I look at the challenges we face as opportunities to organize and to resist. Please join me in supporting Mondoweiss and the crucial role this space provides for communicating, sharing, and supporting Palestinian rights activism in the United States and beyond.

Reporting Spreads Resistance: Review the year’s highlights and donate today

Adam Horowitz, Scott Roth and Philip Weiss on
Reporting spreads Resistance

As 2016 draws to an end, here are some of the year’s most remarkable examples of resistance to injustice: key stories and videos you will want to review and share with others. You can make a difference for justice in Palestine today, by supporting Mondoweiss. We need to raise $120,000 in order to fulfill our mission adequately in 2017 and beyond. With your help, reporting is resistance; reporting spreads resistance; reporting advances resistance.

Where do we go from here? Our thoughts & yours on the US election

Adam Horowitz, Scott Roth and Philip Weiss on

Please tell us your reaction to Donald Trump’s election victory and your suggestions for how Palestinian justice work in general, and Mondoweiss’s journalism in particular, should regroup and move forward. Even though the implications for US foreign policy are not yet clear, the immediate outpouring of racist and Islamophobic rage across the country would seem to confirm our worst fears. Here at Mondoweiss we are starting to understand what this will mean for our work and how we must change accordingly. As always our focus will be on documenting, analyzing and challenging the ongoing Israeli dispossession of the Palestinian people. But one immediate change following the election is that we plan to expand our coverage of the racism and violence here in the U.S. that is finding political expression and power through the Trump victory.

Not just financial support but inspiration: your role in advancing Mondoweiss

Philip Weiss and Adam Horowitz on

When we started our mid-year fundraising campaign a few weeks ago, we asked you, our readers, to guide us on whether to keep growing, and how fast. Your response has been a resounding endorsement—more gifts, in a shorter period, than we anticipated. And readers have sent not just financial support but inspiration.

A remarkable and dangerous paradox: Why we must invest in more Mondoweiss today

Bill Fletcher Jr. on

Activist Bill Fletcher, Jr., says “It’s easy to assume that someone else is giving the funds needed for organizations like Mondoweiss to survive, and to assume that survival is enough. But if we want to expand their influence for real change, it will take resources. Our opponents understand this, and they understand it very well. Knowing the pathbreaking, exceptional work of Mondoweiss, I cannot imagine letting it get to the precipice before contributing—and so I give regularly.”

How much should we push to change US policy towards Israel? Your contribution will decide.

Adam Horowitz on

Mondoweiss consistently, relentlessly and broadly covers United States attitudes toward Israel/Palestine. The last two weeks of American politics show that our work is needed more than ever. In our current fundraising campaign we have asked you to show us through your donations How Much Truth is needed. Please invest today to enable Mondoweiss to push even harder for change.

New directions to grow Mondoweiss’s impact: Which will you invest in?

Philip Weiss on

In our recent survey, Mondoweiss readers told us you want to understand better why we need donations. So today’s campaign message outlines our top priorities for growth—identified through strategic planning and with input from our readers. Your donations are the only way we can sustain the current work, and are even more essential if you agree with us that more truth-telling to more people is urgently needed.

Let’s change the world by funding our movement: Invest in truth today

Nadia Hijab on

Prominent activist Nadia Hijab writes: Join me in supporting Mondoweiss because we need it to be a thriving and growing organization – just like we need all the organizations in our movement that support freedom, justice, and equality. We cannot and will not succeed without organizations that have the capacity to launch new and promising ventures to push for justice harder and faster, and who can achieve demonstrable and measurable change in the United States, one of the toughest arenas in the struggle for rights.

Your support today determines: How much truth?

Adam Horowitz, Scott Roth and Philip Weiss on

Changing public policy for freedom and justice in Palestine requires more people seeing what the mainstream media blacks out. If you agree that change is urgently needed—and that truth-telling journalism is a necessary tool to get to that change—please help increase Mondoweiss’s impact.

Letters to Hillary

Susie Day on

Susie Day imagines a series of satirical letters from Hillary Clinton’s most ardent admirer: “As Senator, you masterfully voted for the war in Iraq, and have for years expertly supported just about every U.S. military intervention – without losing an ounce of your femininity. As Secretary of State, you deftly orchestrated the bombing of Libya. And when Muammar Gaddafi died, sodomized with a bayonet blade, you wittily quipped on TV news: “We came, we saw, he died.” You even got the State Department to approve $165 billion worth of commercial arms sales to 20 nations whose governments gave big bucks to the Clinton Foundation. Take THAT, sexism!”

The Results Are In: What we learned from the Mondoweiss Reader Survey

Tova Perlmutter on

Mondoweiss’s recent reader survey taught us a lot about our readers – who you are, what you like and don’t like about our work, and what you are hoping for in the future. We had over 1,000 surveys completed during the three weeks the survey was live! We are grateful to all who took the time to respond to the survey, and we present here some highlights of the information and insights we received.
