Canada already has its own version of Rick Perry in Stephen Harper who, unfortunately, is the Prime Minister.
I suspect very few Canadians understand why their government has taken such a pro-Israel lurch in recent years.

Goosebump stuff. And ever so germane to what's going on in Palestine now.
Thank you for reminding me again why I stopped reading the New Yorker some 10 years ago.
Tina Brown did a lot of damage to that once fine institution and David Remnick finished it off. The parochialism portrayed in the post above is sad, but unfortunately has been the norm at the New Yorker for many years.
Irrelevance awaits.
Possibly this and the two previous posts are of piece, i.e., a nation whose middle class is under economic pressure to a degree not experienced since the Great Depression becoming slowly unhinged as they are impoverished (at least in relative terms), one incident at time. A bit of road rage here, a bit nativism there as the social fabric slowly unravels. People are uncertain and scared. And for good reason.
Gerald Celente can come across a buffoon and a showman at times but ignore his reading of public mood at your peril.

Not to worry. It has been being reported in the same manner all day by the BBC World Service.
Also in today's news from the FT:
"US issues arms deal ultimatum to Turkey"
By Daniel Dombey in Washington

President Barack Obama has personally warned Turkey’s prime minister that unless Ankara shifts its position on Israel and Iran it stands little chance of obtaining the US weapons it wants to buy.

"Iran’s new deceptions at sea must be punished"
By Stuart Levey

In recent weeks, the UN, the US, the EU and other partners have announced new sanctions to hold Iran accountable for conduct surrounding its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. These actions have significantly expanded and deepened existing sanctions, and seek to combat Iranian efforts to evade increasingly stringent global restrictions.

Can I be forgiven for giving up?
Jacob Weisberg = why I don’t read Slate.
Similarly, David Remnick is why I no longer read the New Yorker after doing so for 30 or so years.
It’s not social exclusion so much as cultural exclusion. There may be baby and bath water issues and I may occasionally miss some good content but I consider it a small act of BDS. If the likes of Weisberg and Remnick choose to hold the views they do while acting as cultural (and political) gatekeepers they are welcome to. But there is a lot of good content out there and one only has so much time so perhaps I should spend it elsewhere.
What, one wonders, goes through the mind of an IDF soldier when they fire a single, well-aimed bullet at an unarmed Palestinian? Society then welcomes him back into its warm embrace.
This pattern is repeated in the thousands, tens of thousands over the course decades? We are witnessing a social pathology at work.
Well done on the mention in the NYRB article by Michael Massing.
Agree completely with your frustration with the NYRB’s PEP mental wall, though it seems to be a little lower than that of the New Yorker’s (which I gave up on years ago).
Finally, congratulations on the new-look blog and, even better, the new comments policy which makes all the difference in the world.
