One of the subjects of Lucas's documentary is Eliad Cohen who is a minor international gay celebrity and model who was a face of "Arisa" club night in Tel Aviv. "Arisa" was funded by the Israeli foreign ministry in 2011 on a tour of Brazil. I wrote it up at the Electronic Intifada.
What I found notable about Cohen's contribution to Arisa club's marketing is the explicit and implied violence against women for the purposes of amusement.
This is important because Cohen's appearance in this documentary and his history of state-sponsored pinkwashing advocacy suggests there's more to the documentary's production than meets the eye.
Also worth considering is that Michael Lucas is a US citizen who went to Israel and hired actors to make a pornographic film. I wonder how he arranged this with the state!
I wonder if this is the same Friends of the IDF group whose members in 2012 won award totaling $1.6 million in discrimination case against Shangri-La Hotel in Santa Monica.

Yes. He said he was going to (ahem) "fuck [me] with the truth."
Alison Weir cited my work to make an argument that the evidence she cited could not support. She also said "Now an excellent article published in Electronic Intifada suggests that an Israeli provocateur, apparently named Ofer Engel, was behind the incident." She misrepresents my article and uses it to make unverifiable claims, so I'm going to call it appropriation.
Weir's reading of my article is actually not rational and is highly prejudiced and presumptive.
I suspected that he used a persona named "Maissam Nablussi." Nowhere did I say that he was impersonating two women. Khulood Badawi is a real person, and she actually shared the decontextualized photograph on her personal Twitter account. That was plainly stated in the first part of my post.
I'm not interested in a dissection of the Facebook group, its members or the comments there. I saw what I saw and judged the content using my own reasoning capacity. If you're a member of the group "Our Land," you can do that yourself too. It has over 1000 members.
I don't know who Yani Haigh is except that he signed the statement in defense of Greta Berlin. The web site hosting the diagram went offline about 15 minutes after my story was published. The web site identified Yani Haigh as the author of the diagrams and the diagrams included references to several different Facebook groups. I don't have a way to share these diagrams again because they are in a proprietary format and the site hosting them has gone offline. However, you can inspect the text strings from the data files at Github. link to gist.github.com
Alison Weir misunderstands my work and appropriates it to make an unsupportable argument based on evidence I presented.
I have not suggested any motive for Ofer Engel, and I certainly have not accused him of being a provocateur or an "agent."

I found the article about Jordan to be very troubling. It is yet another example of how "gay tourism" == sex tourism.
I was curious about the story of how Treviño was hired by The Guardian, so I listened to a radio show from Saturday where he said it all. link to datechguyblog.com
The Guardian came to know Treviño through Twitter starting years ago.
He was invited to speak at Guardian Open Weekend in London in March 2012. link to guardian.co.uk
He was invited to speak at Guardian US launch event in DC in May. link to guardian.co.uk
In the interview, he said that shortly after the DC event, they started discussing the possibility of him being a columnist.
What is so strange then is why he was announced in August and not when he was hired. People are speculating that Trevino was hired to balance Greenwald, but it sounds more likely that Greenwald was hired after Trevino. I wonder if Greenwald knew Trevino was going to be on "the team."
According to the Irish Times, the population of Yarmouk is "a million" but only 144,000 are registered Palestine refugees. How could the regime target Palestinians by shelling a camp where maybe 15% of the residents are Palestinians?
I already did plenty of searches. link to electronicintifada.net If you find any I missed, let me know.
It goes without saying that Alex Kane and Mondoweiss are worth defending against these baseless smears which aim to silence you.
But it's frustrating that only non-Palestinians and non-Arabs are granted this protection from mainstream media elites. In January, Sullivan said he would stand up against anti-Semitism smears but he was silent about PennBDS (we brought it to his attention). Robert Wright's project bloggingheads.tv has a clear problem with Palestinians. No Palestinian women have ever appeared on this site. A handful of other Palestinians have appeared. Gershom Gorenberg alone has appeared more often than all Palestinians combined.
So it's great that these guys stand up for you, but it also perpetuates a significant problem. Palestinians are completely excluded and are never worthy of a word of support from these guys.
"Captain Up" provides "website gamification" for the IDF blog. The company is based in Tel Aviv.
What I find so odd about this project is that's a big leak of personal information from people are eager to promote IDF content on social media. If you poke around in the DOM or monitor your javascript console while the page is running, you will see Facebook opengraph IDs for the Facebook users. Even if the person is not findable in Facebook search, the Facebook profile can be retrieved by appending the ID to http:// facebook . com / profile.php?id= (spaces added to prevent obfuscation by Mondoweiss comment system)
It seems awfully foolish to expose your most valuable, active and eager hasbara activists to this kind of scrutiny...

The wedding of Ahmadinejad and Assad has its own bizarre anti-semitic elements too… it uses rituals of Judaism for humiliation and ridicule. It parallels the use of homosexuality in the videos, too.

I was employing litotes in my suggestion that the parade organizers be recognized.
The Celebrate Israel parade committee should be recognized for finally allowing LGBT groups to participate openly for the first time since the parade started in 1993. All these years, Clinton, Bloomberg, Schumer, Spitzer and others were marching in a parade that explicitly forbid the participation of LGBT groups.

On Tuesday, Andrew Sullivan declared that he would stand up for anyone who is smeared or silenced because they speak up about Israel's occupation.

Just a week ago, progressive and liberal bloggers were tripping over themselves to defend people at the Center for American Progress from unfair accusations of anti-semitism.
For PennBDS, a university professor has singled out Jewish students and called them kapos. This is an attempt to silence non-violent solidarity organizing. Where is Andrew Sullivan? Where are the liberal bloggers?
Any serious journalist would look at the dossier provided by the ADL and want to verify the authenticity of the statements and ask for a response from the person being smeared.
It's sad that Jewish community media is the primary outlet for these attacks, because it shows the journalistic standards are simply non-existant on this issue. The ADL is apparently exploiting this weakness to disseminate false information through Jewish community media.

Racist, sexist, homophobic principles don't greatly distinguish the presidential candidates, but style and culpability for murder do.
I'm not interested in seeing Ron Paul be president. I'm interested in seeing him oppose Barack Obama. I want neither of them to be president.
I hope video surfaces. If I'm understanding the description correctly, Besbes stood still as Mills struck her five times so she could win. Then Mills collapsed in tears! This could be quite a powerful image.

Can anyone confirm the real life existence of these people? The emphasis appears to be on the word "real," which of course, makes me have doubts.

He was bullied as a child and became a powerful player in government as an adult, so we should excuse his (unmentioned) dehumanizing racism against Palestinians. This is great reporting from The Forward?
Does he mean that the conversation should include Palestinians? Or just more Jews?

No wonder it costs so much money to oppose BDS.
Better Place builds infrastructure in the illegal Israeli settlements, and James Wolfensohn is one of their big investors. See link to electronicintifada.net from earlier this year.
I should have added specifically this item, linked from the original. link to hypatia.ca I won't debate sexual consent here. It's a basic human decency and understanding issue. The information from the bail hearing explains the specific complaints: not stopping when told to stop, using force, and sex with an unconscious person. These are the charges Assange has to answer, and the toxic rape culture engages in apology for him and slut-shaming, victim-blaming. Photos, address and phone numbers of the women have been leaked on the internet with specific incitement to violence. The media has deliberately misrepresented the situation and Wikileaks supporters have bought into the rock star persona of Assange and conflated him with the mission.
I only bring this stuff here because the reaction to Naomi Wolf's misinformed article has been mixed, and the basis for attacking the alleged victims is this misinformation if not outright malice.
sorry annie. "not wearing condoms" is a matter of consent. if i consent to sex with a condom, and then you are not wearing a condom, i have not consented to sex. read the article.
Umm.. no. Naomi Wolf has "bravely" alienated her allies by maligning women who complain of sexual assault, diminishing their rights and misrepresenting their situation.
Please see other awesome feminists like Liz Henry who have made really compelling arguments in favor of wikileaks while also standing up for the right of women to consent to sex.
If it's the same Jeff Shapiro, google "jeff shapiro san antonio" reveals that he teaches 7th graders at Temple Beth-El and is the chair of the Federation's San Antonio Association for Jewish Education.
Israel and its apologists love to attack Lebanon and Syria because Palestinian refugees there are deprived of some basic rights, citizenship. But who has the most Palestinian refugees under its control? And who deprives them of citizenship and rights?
The Chronicle of Higher Education published an article about this topic last week. It's behind a pay wall but I helpfully reposted it. link to bangpound.posterous.com
As a Chicagoan, I'm very glad that Lake Michigan is vital to the national security of the United States and is protected by ... 1 Navy base? And maybe 1 major Coast Guard base?
How many bases are on the Persian Gulf? There's probably about a dozen.
This strikes me as dangerously naive.
People born in a country have a right to live there. People born in a country which was created through violence and colonialism have a duty to decolonize. But it's still their home! I'm sure that if Israelis value their privilege more than their homes, they might escape to the places of their ancestral origin if they can secure another passport. But Jewish Arabs are unlikely to return to Iraq or Morocco, and their children born in Israel shouldn't be victims of another unjust population exchange.
Moreover, Palestinian identity is not a commodity. It's not something you can put on and take off. "Oh I am in solidarity with Palestinians, therefore I am Palestinian." For an Israeli to take up this line is the essence of colonialism not solidarity.
Here's a bit more context. The link Phil posted to the Twitter list is mine. It's not any official New America Foundation list. I first learned of the trip from Matt Yglesias' blog, and he identifies all the participants. link to yglesias.thinkprogress.org
As far as I can see, the New America Foundation has not made any official peep about this trip.
(in his best slashdot meme voice) “You must be new here.”
It's insincere and even threatening. They're "warning the Israelis" that if they don't act, democracy and equality will be the only option. What near-sighted leaders.
it's an elite school for elite ideas. why shouldn't he be at harvard?
see Beneath the Ivy, a Legacy of Chains.
But the poll only surveyed Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, and most Palestinians do not live in those places.
It's pretty transparent. A film festival is supposed to exhibit new films, and the only current film in this lineup is Eyes Wide Open. SFJFF should have some better standards than this... people don't attend film festivals to watch stale overplayed films that came out 8 years ago! (Yossi & Jagger)
