He was a true champion. R.I.P.
Ahhh, Goldberg embraces J Street. Some endorsement. As Norman Finkelstein says, J Street is "tepid," so naturally Goldberg (for whatever reason) finds it within himself to confer upon them the label "Zionist." How big of him. I'm sorry...maybe it's because I'm cranky and tired and it's early in the morning, but Goldberg and J Street deserve each other. I'm sticking with JVP.
I'm Jewish, and my wife is Catholic. We love each other very much. Both of us are secular and quite happy with our lives together. Fortunately, I don't often encounter any scorn from my fellow Jews as a result of my intermarriage (although, admittedly, this is attributable to the fact that I don't move in circles where I'd be likely to come face to face with many intermarriage-haters).
As far as my marriage alienating me from any attachment to Israel goes, I grew alienated from Israel a long time ago, and long before I got married. Israel itself alienated me from Israel. Marrying a Catholic and living a secular life had nothing to do with that.
Anthony Weiner is a disgrace. He basically never met an Israeli atrocity he didn't like. He's very smart on healthcare, but disgusting when it comes to the Middle East.
RIP, Professor Judt. You'll always be an inspiration. You were that rarest of intellectuals: a truly independent thinker.
It's just a terrible, terrible loss.
Truly, utterly disgusting. Further proof (as if any was needed!!!) of the continuing moral degeneration of Zionism/Israeli society.
Below are the ignorant ravings of New York Congressman Anthony Weiner. I almost choked when I read it. What an utter moron: progressive on health care reform, and a raving lunatic reactionary on Israel. This idiotic press release is courtesy of the moron's web site:
Congressman Weiner on Turkish and Israeli Flotilla Conflict:
New York, NY – In the aftermath of the events involving a Turkish-sponsored flotilla and the Israeli Defense Forces, Rep. Anthony D. Weiner (D- Brooklyn and Queens) released the following statement:
“While the demand for answers seems to echo in capitals around the world, the facts here are largely known.”
“We know this tragedy was instigated by Turkey. We know that Israel had not only warned that this boat was in violation of an entirely lawful blockade, but had offered safe harbor to the boat in Ashdod. We also know that a known terrorist group – Hamas – has put its hateful agenda over the well being of its people.”
“Any loss of life is tragic. This loss was the result of Turkish instigation and Hamas terror policies. Even if we are the only country on earth that sees the facts here, the United States should stand up for Israel.”
This interview reminds me of one Chomsky did a few years back with the BBC's Tim Sebastian on a program called (if memory serves) "Hard Talk." The same aggressive, in-your-face style, the same false assumptions made about Chomsky (which he then has to take the time to illustrate and dismantle). It's available on youtube (forgive me; I don't have the URL). I think Sebastian was probably playing devil's advocate a bit more than this interviewer, however.
Where would we be without Noam Chomsky? His book "The Fateful Triangle" literally changed my whole view of the Middle East back in the 1980s.
Norman Podhoretz has reached a new low. The man has always been (and, I fear, always will be) absolutely pathetic.
Chomsky has been infuriating Dershowitz since the early 70s, at least, when Chomsky proved (in the pages of the Boston Globe) that Dershowitz had lied about a court case in Israel involving the late Israeli peace activist Israel Shahak. Since then, Dershowitz has been monomaniacally pursuing Chomsky as if he were the White Whale, using every cheap lawyer's trick in the book to try and discredit him (i.e., distorting the truth when he wasn't outright lying).
To read Chomsky's comments on all of this, you can go here: http://www.chomsky.info/letters/20060817.htm
So, the Israelis wants to keep him out because they don't like his ideas, but they're also annoyed with him because he wasn't coming to Israel to communicate those ideas.
I just don't understand the logic; can someone please explain?
