  • '60 Minutes' profiles Palestinian Christians, Michael Oren falls on his face
    • Heh, how many sites like Mondoweiss are there in the USA, a country with over 300 M people? Now, compare the US mainstream media, not an alternative news source like the internet which one has to actually exert some effort to peruse, as distinguished from nightly TV news on network and Cable.

    • It will take an end to the constantly referenced (in US mainstream media and in Congress) "special relationship" with Israel to obtain a reliable peace process to settle the I-P Conflict, same as it took an end to US former "special relationship" with Britain to end the Irish Troubles: link to

    • hophmi, prior to Clinton's administration, the US policy re the situation in Ireland was Anglophile, despite the large percentage of Irish Americans, who were majority in favor on Irish unification as an independent state--with the "special relationship" analogous to the present one with Israel, with England.
Clinton opened up direct and full US access and input to that peace process with all factions, including Sein Fein, which was analogous to HAMAS, which the US has not supported in any way, and has vilified as terrorists. Mitchell was the balanced hand in the Irish problem's peace process; in comparison, Mitchell was not supported to have that same objective hand in the peace process re the I-P conflict--the Israel Lobby knocked him out of that box. No such thing happened due to any Irish Lobby in the USA. Today, the Irish government and the Irish people identify with, and support the Palestinians, not the Israelis--in fact the Irish are the # 1 supporters of the Palestine people in the West due to their own experience with gaining self-determination over the long and brutal British occupation and its helper colony in Northern Ireland which long discriminated against its Irish Catholic element, which was one-third of Northern Ireland. There were a few Irish-American pundits and Irish -American political leaders writing for one side or the other, but the US media took a generally balanced approach, including the Irish-American component of it.

    • Both CBS and 60Minutes have their own twitter accounts. And try the #60Minutes hash tag, which will bring up the on-going battle of tweets on this subject.

    • You are only allowed the good, heart-warming, praise-worthy side of Jewish Geography.

    • Yeh, ditto here.

    • Well, seanmcbride, they will have a lot of company when you add up all those Christian fundies who think they hear the voice of God and Jesus in their ear.

    • Wow, hophmi, that's a consolation! It was too late to stop the show but the Federation coxed all letter recipients to spread the world to get on the horn blasting CBS with enraged hasbara and smoke screens as soon as the show commenced to air or at least right after it aired--all before the showed started to actually air, before they had a clue about the contents. Actually the show was nice to Israel; CBS had Oren on the spot and easily could have made him look a lot more foolish by tossing out a few facts never heard on MSM. They didn't even show the woman talking about BDS on the 15 min segment.

    • Les, those Christian Zionists gave $9M to Israel; read the hot links above. This duping of poor ignorant Christian fundies has been going on in the open for many years now--here's some data from when Joe Lieberman was running for VP--the media back then never even asked him about his entanglement with the Hagee folks: link to

The commericals of the type mentioned in the link are still running; to "save poor mistreated old Russian Jews," more recently I saw them every night during the Glen Beck show run; and most recently on the Fox cable news show in the evening. They also run on my local Jewish cable channel. Lots of Christian fundies with barely the proverbial pot to piss in donate to Hagee type ministries. They would gladly reinsitute the military draft and send a whole generation of American young to go fight with Israel whenever Israel wanted because they think God told them to always support Israel right or wrong and no matter what the cost. The cost would be nothing to them since they would get supreme reward to sit next to God in heaven.

    • Les, that's the tip of the horrible iceberg because the Hagee-Wiesel dynamic is truly mind-boggling; it pays well for both sides of the Zionist leadership--and note how many dumb ass Americans watch and listen to Hagee's crap: link to

    • MJ Rosenberg sullied his pants when he found out the entire jewish establishment in USA--with branches in every US city, not just AIPAC, tried to stop 60 Minutes from airing the subject show:

    • The Jewish Federation acted quickly to manufacture hasbara talking points on Israel's treatment of
its Christians, telling its letter recipients to start ASAP swamping CBS phones, email servers & twitter account with protests at what the Federation assumed would be a show vilifying Israel:

      link to
Resources available prior to the actual showing of the 60 Minute episode are listed and include Ohren's prior essay on the subject in defense of Israel.

    • If I email an article and/or video clip of subject 60 Minutes show to any Christian fundy I know, they will not read it, or watch it. How many fundies are there in USA these days, 30 million?

Ditto for the Jews I know; they would resent it, even though the ones I know, including in-laws, are all secular Jews.

The nominal Catholics in my own family would put it aside to read later and forget about it.

  • The five assaults of Lt Col Shalom Eisner
    • This video showing Eisner in all his glory is all over Twitter.
Meanwhile, kudos to Phil for his getting on the video explanation of how rich Israel Firsters are taking full advantage of US campaign finance laws post Citizens United; the video mostly focuses on Sheldon Adelson types on the right wing, but also reveals how Democratic Israel Firsters from Wall St are engaged in the same way. link to

Many web sites carried this video and an article on it, but many of them have already had this video pulled--how dare they! No washy Jewish dirty laundry in public even when it includes the shroud of Phil Weiss having his say, even so briefly?

  • Why did Washington Post and NYT lend themselves to 'unglued' 'angerfest' directed at Beinart?
    • Maybe Eli Lake should spend a few minutes in the Truman Archives online? Every day I wonder how those in power and those in power in the media get there because they are so ignorant, or intentionally so--I suspect the latter. This is because I assume they have an educated brain. Or at least a functioning one, at least one, say, more available than who? Anybody who regularly uses the term ZOG? Rick Perry?

    • Yes, they do think Dick and Jane are dumb as fuck, and with good reason. They have good reason to think the doughboys will go over there; they always do.

    • When will that be, when street folks throw rocks through the NYT windows and appear suddenly at their gated communities? History shows that the French guillotine is less likely than more of the same, with minor inconvenience to those who might give the beggar at the door some cake.

    • yes, marc b, I was stumped by goldberg getting stumped myself. They won't listen to how Atzmon cuts through the stumping, so nothing will really change until, say, a few years after Israel attacks Iran & US knee jerks into the fray. See atime forpeace's comment re when it becomes academic thought nobody (again) will pay attention to that has any power. Or rather, they will take Bush Jr POV: I am the doer, they can scribble alter. Classified material has its advantages.

  • Nationalist public radio
    • Conan knows, but he wants the material perks that goes with his career, like so many others. So does that other Irish comedian, the woman--what's her name? She even did a comedy skit about it, telling us all she wouldn't attack the Jews as she valued her career?

    • Hey, Dickerson, it's just like the Seinfeld episode Larry David never made. Should Mel Gibson get in in the fun?

    • Americans hear the word poem and they immediately reach for their TV remote control; in this sense they are different from Europeans even though 60% of them descend from EU nations via blood line. A poem to an average American, in my experience, is like a totally melted Mauser rifle.

  • Egypt and Israel, all is not well
    • Dammit it, Walid, I wanted to add that big find since it really shows the banner to this article. I will only add that the US-seduced (bribed) deals as between Egypt and Israel, in this case, the natural gas deal, was made at the expense of the Egyptian Street. That's why the pipelines have been sabotaged so much since Muburak's fall. The US deal gave Israel Egyptian gas at a large discount, so that Israelis paid much less for gas than average Egyptians. Just a small micro showing how neo-colonialism works in the 20th-21st Century.

  • Israeli Foreign Ministry: Exporting toxic culture
    • Seems to me US has been importing toxic Israeli culture for a long time now, both as to our necon-PEP foreign policy and at home by lethally impregnating Home Land Security. Some Heimat we have these days.

  • On Iran, Obama's fmr national security adviser uses the new C-word (Contain)
    • I have yet to hear anyone in MSM talk about how JFK tried to stop Israel from getting the bomb as US regime is now doing with Iran. Why can't we even talk about this in the MSM here? Israel got it anyway--a month after JFK was murdered. Israel has yet to join the NNPT. At least Iran has already joined the NNPT. It's amazing that the lone superpower cannot get Israel to even join the NNPT when it has 200-400 nukes, and subs from Germany (at German taxpayer expense) ready for nuke tipped missiles, while Iran has some fast little speedboats. It's a giant joke on all of us, like the Israeli celebration of Independence Day sans any mention of the Nakba. Bibi says each generation of Goys harbors Jew-haters, and hence that is why his Israel exists, and must continue to exist as is (caveat emptor?). It the program for this Israel spiel was a video game, nobody would buy it as it's too ridiculous.

  • 1200 rabbis threaten an end to interfaith harmony if Methodists support divestment
    • Many rabbis over the centuries have interpreted the word "neighbor" as pertaining only to fellow Jews. Many still do, it seems.

    • My communication with US fundies reveals that they could care less about Arab Christians. They have no will at all to check it out.

    • And we all know by now that the Torah is nothing without the interpretation of the Talmud, just as the US founding documents are nothing without SCOUTS & lower federal courts interpretation. What the federal courts have done with, e.g., the Commerce Clause alone, is quite striking, like say Obamacare, not to mention the "penumbra of the Constitution" which gave us a right to privacy, hence outlawing of laws against interracial marriage. Let's hope the Methodists, and the Presbyterians, next, followed by the Pope, will do something besides rubber-stamping all Israel does as the Evangelicals do (so they can rapture up to Heaven while the rest of humanity not on board is sent to Hell).

    • Fredblogs, you are new to this site, comparatively speaking; many of us have been here for years--if you peruse the archives you will see that nothing said by us is not factually based.

    • hophmi, u talk about the "rest of America" as if they have ever received any objective facts from their MSM about the I-P situation. Goebbels use to justify his stance by saying the German public agrees. All they had were government furnished radios all stuck on the government station. Essentially, we in US have the same today when it comes to anything touching on Israel and its conduct.

  • Sequestering young people in religious/ethnic schools breeds alienation and hatred (Magid takes on Beinart)
    • I dunno what his source is, Annie. I do know that, having married a Jew, I know inter-married Jewish children in my extended family, as well as my own nuclear family, and not a one of them is isolated and unaware of his or her Jewishness. They look at both religions as optional, and find things to like and dislike about both religions as practiced, and some, intellectually also.

    • Elliot, I tend to agree with you. One self-identifies as a Jew or a non-Jew. I know many white American non-jews who never heard the word "gentile." But they've all heard the word "jew." And yes, those who identify as a christian think that means a type of person who is not a jew. But have you ever tried to talk to a self-identified member of Jews For Jesus? I have. The ones I talked to never met a real jew in their life, but they think they may have jews in their family tree--they support Israel right or wrong, and love baby Jesus. Go figure.

    • "We tell stories." Yes, you do. "History is just facts and figures, dates and numbers." Really? The Tooth Fairy is a story too. Recall the adage that "history is written by the victors?" Does this not acknowledge the story aspect or narrative of any history book too? And does not historical research often discover things left out of former official history books? Hence, a new story, with more information ignored by former story tellers. And so on. The general definition of a story is that it is a piece of fiction, as in "story-line." Or "narrative." Human memory is very faulty as lots of scientific tests have shown over and over again. It's not unwise to take any story somebody tells you with a few grains of salt, to say the least. Ever question a court witness in a criminal case?

    • "We don’t come to your side. You guys come to our side. "
Is there any reason why this stance should not be taken by any group with equal emotional assurance? Ever know anyone who was raised as a Jew and only belatedly discovered he was also something else?
Most intermarried couples I know have values that don't favor either religion or ethnic group. They like it that way, and so do their offspring. They like aspects of both, not so much, other aspects of either. Their choice. Choice, ever hear of it? It does not merely apply to food or how one wears their hair or gets it cut.

    • jonrich111, s0 I guess you empathize with all ethnic folks who want their own offspring to marry within their ethnic group? And dwell on and in the history and culture of said group? Assimilation is death? Interesting, for Americans to ponder.

    • Well, here's where some of the beliefs, rules, reasons for keeping kosher: link to

    • Re: "Religions have rules too. I think of Kashrut as a set of rules I follow, not as my religion."
Gee, most folks would think if you went to the bible to explain and/or justify your stance on an issue, that you were basing your opinion on your religion. You know, like Hagee does, or M Bachmann? Or tons of rabbis in Israel and in USA who cite the Torah (when the Talmud is the generally accepted interpretation of the Torah). But U go by rules, independent of religion. What is the source of your rules, those you live by daily, hophmi? I was told when I was a kid that I could not eat meat on Friday. Nobody ever really explained why. How about your dietary rules? Please explain why you adhere to them. Thanks.

"Most of the basic laws of kashrut are derived from the Torah's Books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Their details and practical application, however, is set down in the oral law (eventually codified in the Mishnah and Talmud) and elaborated on in the later rabbinical literature. While the Torah does not state the rationale for most kashrut laws, many reasons have been suggested, including philosophical, practical and hygienic."

Which rationale do you use to justify your daily eating habits?

    • Thanks, hophmi, I always wondered, growing up as a Roman Catholic, why I had to eat fish on Friday--no meat, ever!

    • Do we need to invite Al Sharpeton and David Duke to this thread? How about all those old Catholics that had to eat fish on Friday and get let out early from public school to go to Catachism (sic)? Come back with ash on their forehead?

    • I think Atzmon's distinction between speaking as a Jew, or organizing as a Jew first, is the root issue. Appeals to tribe leave a bad taste in my senses, even when ostensibly well-meaning; I say this, knowing Phil started this blog because he himself was struggling with the issue, and its ramifications in the 21st Century while being aware of the historical past.
In recent reactions to the BDS movement, writers like Peter Beinart, Daniel Levy and Thomas Friedman have offered criticism. This criticism, however, which views the question of Palestine through the prism of Zionism, is incapable of grappling with a movement that views the same question through a humanist perspective of rights.

In a lengthier article for the Atlantic, Daniel Levy recently expanded on a point Beinart made in his New York Times Op-Ed and one that is more or less reflected in Friedman's column demanding boycott activists carry a map of a two-state solution with them at all times...

    • In 1943 the Nazis sent to Theresienstadt some 500 Danish Jews who had not escaped to Sweden. While Europeans elsewhere often quickly lost interest in their deported Jewish fellow citizens, the Danes persisted in demanding that the Germans account for these Danish citizens and allow the Red Cross to visit the ghetto.
To dispel rumours about the extermination camps, the Nazis permitted the visit, but they arranged an elaborate hoax. They deported many camp residents to Auschwitz to minimize the appearance of overcrowding and erected fake stores and cafés to give the appearance of a life of comfort and ease. The Red Cross visited the Danish Jews—no more than two or three in a room—in freshly painted quarters. A children’s opera, Brundibar, was performed for the guests. The hoax succeeded so well that the Nazis made a propaganda film at Theresienstadt showing how well the Jews were living under the benevolent protection of the Third Reich. link to

President Shimon Peres said he was shocked, and Benny Gantz, the Israeli chief of staff, described it as “a severe incident, which contravenes the IDF’s values”, saying it would be investigated thoroughly. The IDF routinely claims it is the most moral army in the world.
However, friends of the suspended IDF officer claimed that the demonstrator had fractured bones in the soldier’s hand before the incident. The soldiers had acted with restraint, tried to calmly disperse the activists blocking the road, and only retaliated when they were attacked, they added.

Ias said the event had been non-violent, and there had been no verbal exchange or contact between him and the officer before he was hit in the face. He was taken to hospital where he had stitches to his lips.

    • Irit's heart-felt message, her severe recoil, reminds me of Hitler's passionate passage about when his young eyes fall upon Jews from the East in the Vienna streets. Her thoughts also remind me of Streicher's images in reverse. Perhaps she should write an Israeli Jewish version of The Fox In The Meadow or The Poisonous Mushroom? Or is that already done.
I just watched a couple of episodes of Steve's travels in Denmark on PBS about cozy Denmark. Should he do a new episode incorporating this in the Danish version of "cozy?" If there is any country that looks less like Israel, I can't think of one that is more effective than Denmark just doing and building what it does naturally. • PS, nobody today disputes that 4 of the 5 gas chambers at Dachu were used solely for killing lice, etc. Futher, re the 5th one:
Sign exhibited in the Dachau "gas chamber" by museum authorities read until the mid-eighties as follows: "GAS CHAMBER disguised as a 'shower room' - never used". The sign was changed in the mid-eighties to read: "GAS CHAMBER disguised as a 'shower room' - never used as a gas chamber."

Dachu commenced as a concentration for political prisoners of every stripe. Many people died there, including many Russian POWs, but apparently not from gassing. The camp should not be confused with death camps outside Germany, e.g., Auschwitz.

    • As mentioned upstream here, there's not a shred of evidence that the SS panzer tank unit Grass was in committed atrocities. In fact that unit fought gallantly on both fronts. As a POW, Grass found himself working with young Jewish DPs his own age in a US Air Force company kitchen at Furstenbruck where they constantly heard white GIs dissing a nearby black GI company as "niggers." He says, at p. 195 of Peeling The Onion, "We and the young Jews passed over this in silence because we had other fish to fry." He then goes on:
"...the American 'education officer' with his spectacles and soft voice and freshly ironed shirts, did not get very far with us, the black -and-white pictures of Bergen-Belsen, Ravensbruck... I saw the piles of corpses, the ovens; I saw the starving and the starved, the skeletal bodies of the survivors from another world. I couldn't believe it.

' You mean Germans did that?' we kept asking.
'Germans could never have done that.'
And among ourselves we said, ' Propaganda. Pure propaganda.'
A mason who went with us on a brief reeducation tour of Dachu--we were classified as young Nazis--said after we had been led through the camp from one station of the cross to the next, 'Remember the shower rooms? And the shower heads? For gas supposedly: Well, they were freshly plastered, the Amis installed them afterward...'

It was some time before I came gradually to understand and hesitantly to admit that I had unknowingly--or, more precisely, unwilling to know--taken part in a crime that did not diminish over the years and for which no statute of limitations would every apply, a crime that grieves me still.
It was neither the education officer's arguments nor the overly graphic photographs he showed us that broke through by obstinacy; no, I did not get over my block until a year later, when I heard the voice of my former Hitler Youth leader Baldur von Schirach, I don't remember where, coming from the radio. Those accused by the Nuremberg tribunal of being war criminals were entitled to take the floor one last time before the verdict was read out. In an attempt to exonerate the Hitler Youth, Schirach asserted its ignorance, claiming that he and only he was aware of mass extermination as the final solution of the Jewish question.

I had to believe him. I continued to believe him. But as long as I served as dishwasher and interpreter, I was obstinate. We had lost the war all right: the victors had more soldiers, tanks, and planes, never mind calories, than we had. But what about the pictures?

When we argued with our Jewish coevals, they shouted 'Nazis! You Nazis!'
We responded, 'Get out of here! Go to your Palestine!'

But then we would laugh together over the crazy Americans, especially the education officer, whom we embarrassed with questions about his country's contemptible treatment of the 'niggers.'"

    • lysias, records and all historical narratives show the 10th SS Panzer Division Frundsberg committed no atrocities.

    • In his 2006 memoir, Peeling The Onion, Grass is very direct, more than in his other works, in recapturing who he was, and was not, in his formative years. He also tells the reader who some of the original models were for characters in his earlier works. I'm not finished with the book yet. It's a very valuable work imo.

Why No Sympathy for the Palestinians?
The Disgusting Attacks on Gunter Grass
      by TARIQ ALI
The German writer Gunter Grass (The Tin Drum) had already predicted the response to his poem in SdZ. There is no reason to be surprised, but there is every reason to be disgusted. Within Germany both the elite and a layer of the population by their words and actions appear to have accepted the disgraceful Goldhagen thesis whereby all German were guilty for the crimes of the Third Reich. This thesis has now been developed further: all Germans are guilty for eternity for the crimes of the Third Reich.

Behind this thinking is the Zionist and Zionophile argument that the crime against the Jews of Europe was unique in the annals of history. This was true as far as the method of extermination was concerned, but not in any other way. The Belgians massacred the Congolese in greater numbers: over 10 million according to the historian Adam Hochschild. The killing of Armenians during the First World War was systematic and we could go on and discuss the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but comparing one massacre or genocide to another is a futile exercise. Raul Hilberg the most authoritative historian of the Judeocide was angered by the uses that were being made of that crime today.

Some members of the extreme-right government and Lieberman in particular, that rules Israel today have used proto-fascist language against the Palestinian Arabs. Are we not allowed to point that out? That the Israeli government pushed the Bush administration to make war on Iraq is hardly a secret. Nor is the statement of the Israeli Ambassador to the US the day after the fall of Baghdad: “Don’t stop. Move on to Damascus and Teheran.’ Are we not allowed to rebuke him? The targeting and killing of young Palestinians in Gaza and elsewhere is fine, is it?

Gunter Grass was very mild in his criticisms. He concentrated on Israeli warmongering in relation to Iran. He could have said a lot more. The fact that it needs political courage to say even what he did in Germany or France is a sad reflection on the political culture of both these countries. As for the attacks on Grass for his wartime activities, these are beneath contempt. The Israelis were delighted when the former Italian minister, Gianfranco Fini, whose party is in lineal descent from Mussolini, went to Israel and praised the Wall. He was forgiven his party’s past. So the past only matters if a person is critical of Israel. The former Nazis in various positions in the postwar Federal republic who pushed through reparations and backed Israel, they were never criticized either.

German citizens should ponder the following: it was not the Palestinians who were responsible for the murder of millions of Jews during the Second World War. Yet they, the Palestinians, have become the indirect victims of the Judeocide. Those to whom evil is done, do evil in return to others. So why no sympathy for the Palestinians?

Tariq Ali is the author of The Duel: Pakistan on the Flightpath of American Power. He can be reached at [email protected].

    • Yeah, Fredblogs, all those other countries have been occupying foreign land for decades; it's a real sign of contemporary times, eh?

    • Well, yes, Fredblogs, Grass could have shot himself too. Or simply refused, taking whatever punishment meted out to him. Any draftee can run away while his nation is fighting its last desperate measure defending the homeland. I'm sure you would have done the right thing at age 17 under similar circumstances, and having been reared and schooled in a closed society with little outside information coming in...

    • Grass's unit was never involved in any atrocities; Germans with a bone to pick with Grass (there are many) have researched the hell out of that subject.
Unlike the Pope, he actually was in battle, and wrote how he pissed his pants when confronting Russian tanks.

    • Fredblogs, do you consider Israelis who served the Zionist cause before the state of Israel was established criminals since they were recognized by the Western World as members of terrorist organizations at the time?

Also, where do you get the notion mere membership in the Waffen SS of a conscripted 17 year old makes him a criminal?

In the USA, one is assumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

    • David44, the article you link us to merely has Grass saying times in Germany were black and the people responded with enthusiasm to ways to get out of their severe condition, including Grass. Although the link you give us does not have Gunter saying so, he did volunteer for submarine service when he was underage, but he did not volunteer for the Waffen SS--as Phil points out, he was drafted (right after he turned age 17). I fail to see how he differs from any lower-middle-class kid I know, growing up in the USA--and their country was not in the dire situation Germany was between the wars.

  • Sixty-five percent of Hebron has been confiscated by Israel for settlements since 1967
    • It's simple: Israel merely wants to exist, and to do so, it needs ALL Palestinians land except perhaps a small patch of undeveloped barren desert to go along with the Gaza Strip. This is because Israel's secure existence depends on having all the rest of the land in question. This is in accord with military theory on what's needed to adequately defend a piece of land, in this case Israel. One needs a front from which one can fall-back, without endangering one's own people on the land proper, and in correlation, a front upon which one can launch a preemptive strike, again, without endangering one's own people on the land proper or population base firm. Any questions?

  • Israeli Big Brother makes the occupation 'a reality' on TV
    • So, we should be happy that Pollard has not been freed yet by any sitting POTUS? This shows the Israel Lobby is not the most influential foreign policy lobby in the USA, that a caught spy who essentially sold the US missile defense map to Israel during the height of the Cold War for his own profit and Israel's bartering arm has not been pardoned?

  • Romney has friends in all the right places
    • CloakAndDagger--I'm for Ron Paul two, as I was in '08. Our banking, monetary policy and foreign policy in the ME are ruining this country--not enough people see how huge these two mistakes are, how they affect everything else. I think it will take a near total collapse of the economy and WW3 before enough Americans wake up--we aren't there yet.

    • I agree, Justice Please. Other than Ron Paul, the rest of them are all like incestuous hillbillies with Israel.

  • When did 'Shady companies with ties to Israel' become a term of derision not praise in the US press?
    • The press is still on to get Obama to free Pollard; it's incessant. I guess it will depend on how much Obama needs to free him when the GOP candidate might be winning?

  • Iran has 'promised' 'another Holocaust' -- CBS commentator
  • 'Israel's policy endangers world peace' -- Jakob Augstein and Gideon Levy have Gunter Grass's back
    • Gunter Grass is a great man. For those of you who have read his literature, you already know that. For the rest of you, here is his speech apropos being awarded the Noble Prize for Literature--it's one I don't think his German knee-jerk commentators understand in the slightest, especially the one who analogized a serious novelist in the vein of the great 19th Century novelists to a muscle-building man at the gym--it's ironic that a German media pundit, arch liberal to the core, he thinks, would borrow from Goebbels to attack Grass for his poem, which states the obvious about Israel's nukes, a matter that can't be uttered in America by--even a great novelist: link to

  • Grass smears in 'Times', plus new translation of his 'I've had it with the West's hypocrisy' poem
    • LeaNder, why would you think anyone here would take seriously psycho babble about Grass's motives for saying what he said? Especially when it is accompanied by statements such as "Israel has never threatened Iran's existence, whereas Iran's leaders are constantly vowing to wipe Israel off the map."
What Iranian leader has threatened Israel's existence? What Iranian leader has ever said he/she wants to "wipe Israel off the map?"

So, what were your two long responses? I assume they were critical. Perhaps, ultimately we agree? Why do you send me that link, but not your two long responses? You don't even summarize them, just suggest they were critical as you think you will never hear from them again. Why do you play cute? It does not become you.

    • LeaNder, I think the same about any group en masse and about the current crop of leaders. Are you against Ron Paul's approach to foreign policy? His approach to monetary policy? His fiscal policy? Why, exactly wouldn't you vote for Ron Paul? And what, if anything do you like about Ron Paul? What difference do you see in Ron Paul and his son? What surprised you about the latter? Why was it a surprise to you? Do you have the facts on your claim Ron Paul personally spread racist thought for money and votes, or that he knowingly supported that? Do you think Obama does the same thing, a man much younger than Ron Paul so that even a small dip in this racist water makes him more complicit in such activity? How about the other GOP contenders for POTUS?
What is your take on Grass's life in his teen years, leading up to him finding himself in the Waffen SS? How much does your own generation understand about growing up in Germany back then? What are your thoughts on these questions?

    • LeaNder, what do you have against the mullahs that you don't have against the Zionists in charge of Israel?

And you didn't answer my question responding to your naivete.
      Grow up.

    • RE: "... I think he willingly ignored the tiny Israel argument in this context."

Tiny Israel with a population of 6 M--has the 4th strongest Military in the World, and an iron-clad MOU with the sole superpower USA to always have the most cutting qualitative edge over all other Military in the ME for free, 200-400 nuke bombs, the only ones in the ME, and a USA MOU that guarantees Israel's security no matter the cost to itself.

    • LeaNder, of course Israel has not declared it want to destroy Iran, or the Iranian people. Did Hitler or Stalin ever make such a public declaration about any country or people it sought to control? Imperial Japan or Mussolini's Italy?

So you won't "embrace people like Ahmadinead purely for condemning Israel"?

Jeez, maybe Churchill was right when he said "The Germans, they are either at your throat or at your feet."

Quit being such a stupid commenter.
Do you know the extent of the economic sanctions on the Iranian people? Do you think Grass is wrong and your country should keep giving "reparations" to Israel in the form of nuclear-arm-ready subs?

    • The Persian word for map, “nagsheh” is not contained anywhere in his original Farsi quote, or, for that matter, anywhere in his entire speech. Nor was the western phrase “wipe out” ever said.Yet you, Fredblogs, believe that Iran’s president threatened to “wipe Israel off the map.” despite never having uttered the words “map.” “wipe out” or even “Israel.”

Here's the full quote translated directly to English:

“The Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time.”

      Word by word translation:

Imam (Khomeini) ghoft (said) een (this) rezhim-e (regime) ishghalgar-e (occupying) qods (Jerusalem) bayad (must) az safheh-ye ruzgar (from page of time) mahv shavad (vanish from).

    • BTW, those who have read Peeling The Onion know that Grass says that he knew nothing of the Holocaust until the Americans showed him the gruesome pictures during his captivity as a POW. Even then, his initial reaction was one of disbelief. Yet, Grass says he knew that concentration camps existed and he knew the Jews were populating them. Grass' rendition of events is believable if you take Grass' point in that book that his childlike gullibility and faith caused him not to inquire further. Thus, at the time in question, Grass was in a state of willful indifference -- of refusing to see the true nature of the regime he was serving. Thus, it is believable that many Germans simply did not know of the holocaust on the one hand, but were guilty of willful and criminal indifference on the other. Think about how that applies to the average American from a lower middle class background today, that is, if you actually know intimately any such Americans, as I do.

As a former grunt myself, I view Grass' description of his comically ineffective service in the Waffen SS as credible. The Waffen SS is complicated as there were atrocity units and simple warrior units who did nothing but fight enemy armies in the field. Grass is assigned to a woefully untrained unit and never fires a shot. Given the nature of those units at the time and Grass' brief service, I suspect that Grass had no role in atrocities, especially if you bone up on the military history of his unit during the last year or so of WW2. Despite all this, in the book Grass accepts his guilt for being part of and a supporter of the Third Reich. This part of the book is extremely well done and Grass' voice is sincere and moving. How many teen-age grunts ever write a book, let alone a Noble Prize winning book?

    • If you look at the history of Grass's Waffen SS Panzer unit, you will quickly see it didn't have much time, if any, for atrocities such as those committed on civilians; it came late into the war; about 75% were conscripts, mostly from the land service, and, most briefly, they were sent off to fight the 1st Red Army Tank Corps; then back west to fight the invasion at Normandy. Grass himself was an assistant tank gunner. The unit Frundsberg, like its sister unit Hohenstaufen, suffered a very high casualty rate, up to 80%, which had to be replaced.

I imagine Grass never revealed he was part of such a unit as he must have figured out merely by serving in the Waffen SS, even as a 17 yr old conscript in the final phases of the war, he'd never have a writing career, let alone a Noble Prize for Literature.

    • Looks like a few highly-placed Germans are defending Gunter Grass's poem: link to

    • Great Question, eGuard.

    • biorabbi, Grass was drafted into the SS shortly after he turned age 17. He was cannon fodder.

    • biorabbi, your imaginary ex clansman would've had to have grown up in deep south and been pressured into the clan shortly after his 17th birthday, and with age, uncommon wisdom would have propelled him to come out in favor of affirmative action. Otherwise, your analogy makes no sense.

    • piotr, exactly right--Grass was teen-age cannon-fodder when he was drafted into an SS Panzer Division.

    • biorabbi, would you be equally appalled by a Jew who fought for the future Jewish state as a teen-ager, participating in the Nakba, and, having survived the war, gradually lived and learned and with the advantage of years, pursued education, self-awareness, wisdom, and came to speak out against the occupation?

Were you once a teen-ager growing up while your country was nearing, engaged in war? And did you enlist or get conscripted while still a teen? Somehow I doubt it.
Many young Americans did--I was one of them. Every war fought in my lifetime, especially beginning with the Vietnam War, was a mistake in my opinion. Iraq was the biggest mistake, and now we are looking at Iran.

Grass volunteered for submarine service as a way to escape lower middle class life but he was never accepted; later, shortly after he turned age 17, he was drafted into the 10th SS Panzer Division.

In my experience, this aspect of his life time-line differs little from many Americans I've known. Too bad more of them have not grown wiser over the years as adults like Mr Grass did.

More state-wise; Israel is working feverishly to ingratiate itself with China and India, rising economic powers and viewed by many Jewish leaders both here and everywhere as a replacement host nation power for Uncle Sam, who himself, succeeded Britain, then France.
