Thanks Phil for so much thoughtful commentary. You are the best! The issue I have with Chomsky, is that while he is right about Jews who do not 'accept Christ' going to hell is that the term Christian is used too loosely. Most people who identify as Christian are headed there too, along with Muslims, Hindus and every other religion. They are all in the same boat. Unless you fit into the small group that sees the way they do, they believe you are doomed no matter your religion. So I don't see that as anti- semitism, just narrow minded! Frank Schaeffer's books nail it. People like Robertson love Israel and the Chosen People, just watch the 700 Club for a week if you can stomach it.
If anyone has any clue how to get a person to listen please respond. I just got hung up on twice. Once after talking to the Consulars office who told me to write a letter, her office had nothing to do with it and she did not know what office did and hung up on me. I then called back and the Ambassadors dept. They just disconnected me after leaving me hanging.
Phil, Adam...Mondoweiss...you deserve a big congratulations for the event last night. What an amazing ensemble. I felt so proud having my 19 year old daughter be there to hear these 4 AMAZING women. Laura was masterful as she artfully moved the conversation. Each speaker, including the Colonel, was strong, articulate, passionate and inspiring. Thank You so much for that event, it was excellent! Trudie Styler's did a haunting reading of the testimony of a father as he watched the shooting of 3 of his children and his mother by an IDF soldier in a tank in front of their house. I don't think anyone was breathing while she read. I hope there were people there for whom this was enlightening.
Does anyone have an email address for the Board because I would like them to know how offensive and hurtful this is to my Palestinian family. Three members of my family are CUNY graduates and now we find out some of us are not even considered fully human by a member of the Board of Trustees. That upsets me!
Not everyone sees this as a big win for Palestinians against Empire. Haider Eid from Palestine
"Ultimately, what this intended “declaration of independence” offers the Palestinian people is a mirage, an “independent homeland” that is a bantustan-in-disguise. "

Good Luck Craig, I am glad there is someone in the church doing this work. My experience with American Evangelical Christians, even those who do not necessarily identify as Christian Zionists has been follow, follow, follow. They rarely question what they have been taught and want easy answers, "God said...." They are afraid to think outside of their worldview because it might open it up for more questions and that is a threat to their faith. At some point they like to say..."well it's in God's hands!" I left the church because of the absolute hypocrisy that exists...what they really care about is building their institutions and "saving" more souls so they can contribute to their institutions. They are the most bigoted, uncaring group I know.
This was absolutely beautiful. I am so glad they have that precious memory. Could someone please post more info on Matt. I have searched for a bio or a picture, I would love to know more about him.
Just came home from seeing it. Wow! There it was on the big screen. Of course you wish for more but I have to say this is a solid beginning. The Q& A was excellent. Rula and Schnabel were excellent. One man made a statement that this was a nice Art movie but not to be taken for the truth. At which point Rula corrected him and said, it is true because it is my life and actually it was much more brutal than that, but we didn't want it to be too shocking. Schnabel told a story about a screening at which Barbara Streisand questioned them...."did this really happen?" I highly recommend seeing it. He will show it at any theater he can get it into, he commented that he wants as many people as possible to see it. And Rula is truly beautiful inside and out. She said she always wanted her story told, but never imagined it would be by a Jewish man!
There is a wonderful interview with the actress Rula Jebrea "There's an agreement, there's a complicity with the media because it's kind of a taboo in the mainstream to talk about Palestinian issues, especially Palestinian stories."

Is this cancellation confirmed?
Witty...Max Ajl (Jewbonics) is speaking at Hampshire College tomorrow and wanted to invite you. He mentioned it on his blogsite.
Todd,
You must realize that some of the worst tyrants are in power because of the financial support of the U.S. We gave Egypt somewhere in the range of 1.5B a year. He used some of that money to buy U.S. weapons and terrorize the people. We trained the Egyptian military, when the protests broke out the top Brass were in D.C.. We give Israel 3B a year of our taxpayer money to buy weapons made in the U.S. and Occupy and Oppress the Palestinians. When the whole world condemns Israel for building Settlements on Palestinian land, the U.S. uses its veto in the UN Security Council. It is with our money and our governments support other countries are permitted to commit atrocities, so it makes sense that the people of this country show their disapproval through protest and other actions. Also, since we are supposed to be living in a democracy, I think that is what it is supposed to look like. Is it only when the people protesting look different than you are protesting that it disturbs you, or any protests?
But not even 'Americans are like Americans'. It is the 'we' you are using that I am having the problem with. America has huge issues with racism, sexism and bigotry. We hide much of it because of our economic superiority. People can distract themselves with shopping and TV. I have seen it, experienced it and read about it. So what are those cultural differences that you are intimating?
Whenever you shine a light on a criminal, abhorrent act such as the Lara Logan attack, the temptation is to start painting 'those people' in broad strokes. I went to the link above and found it to be a simplistic, racist worldview. Do you know that the rape statistics in the military are very high and growing. The women who are raped are having a hard time because when they bring the charges to their commanders, they are rarely taken seriously. Do we then look at all the military and say the rapes and assaults explain who the military are? I have never heard that.
I do agree that all humans have dark sides, that is not what the writer of the link above was saying. The way I understood it, she was saying some cultures (Arabs and Puerto Ricans??) have more of a tendency to act deviantly.
I am sorry women have to be victimized in any society or culture and see no benefit in demonizing one group.
I remember when the first settlers moved into my husbands Old City Palestinian neighborhood in the late 70's and along with them a big Israeli flag and droves of Israeli Occupation soldiers. It immediately caused immense stress for all the families who now had to worry for their children getting beaten and worse by the soldiers. Families no longer went out to visit each other, everyone lived with fear. Very successful strategy since no one wants to live like that, children left the family homes and moved away. My mother-in-law always grieved that she had to send her children away, could not see her grandchildren grow up or be part of the lives of her sons. She paid a huge price for the Zionist Enterprise. Her mother and sister were killed by a napalm bomb as they sat in their kitchen in Jerusalem in 1967. Theft of her husbands property and loss of family business after 67 caused the family to struggle financially. I always found it so disturbing that many (not all) Jews I met and talked to in New York, felt it their right to possess a land, my husband, who had deep roots in could not live. Quite a scam!
One of my best friends was my downstairs neighbor Charles. Charles went to Grad School at Yale. He was Jewish and very cosmopolitan. Charles never achieved his professional dreams due to some bad choices and a bit of bad luck (losing both his parents when he was young). When he started to hit hard times financially later in life, his Jewish friends felt no "kinship" with a poor failure. Actually he told me many of his friends found him an embarrassment because he had not achieved success. But to me he was a success as a human being. In my family Charles was loved and accepted completely by everyone, not for what he accomplished or what tribe he was but because he was a good, kind person. He was also the smartest person I ever knew. Until she died my Mom loved Charles and he was always invited to every family event and holiday.
When his financial situation became dire, I tried to find a Jewish organization here in NY that would help him but could not. None of his 'very well off Jewish friends' offered to help him. They didn't flock to him in his declining days. The person that took the most responsibility for Charles was a friend who was not Jewish. What kind of tribalism does not take care of all of its members? The kind of tribalism Phil talks about sounds an awful lot like elitism with a Jewish flavor. And like all elitism, if you don't measure up, you are never really in the club.
Godspeed Phil!! By the way I have heard there are some problems over there in that part of the world so could you please see what you could do to fix them.... and if they don't listen to you, just come right back home, we need you and love you here!
My brother was just given a booklet by his girlfriend: 2010 Top Ten Anti-Israel Lies" put out by the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Does anyone know anything about it or if there has been a response to it? Anything would be helpful.
Then let them build their buffer zone on their own land!!
These Anti Zionist Americans you refer to are just that...Americans! But also and mostly... Humans! Therefore their allegiance is to the truth and to human rights and justice for all, not to a third rate apartheid state!
Joseph, would you be willing to make your fact sheet available. I was at that meeting on Thursday and got into a debate with one of the David Project people. I was disappointed with myself for getting emotional and losing my ability to focus on the facts only. I also get defensive against their ridiculous false claims of human shields and arguments like that. I definitely need help in staying calm and knowing how to present the facts.
It seems the Palestinians just don't get it. They have a role to play as the oppressed and they are not doing it right. Israelis get it right as the oppressors, they can be as violent as they want, but the Palestinians keep getting it wrong. Non-violent... passive is their part, can someone please tell them! Geez!
Yes Phil, I was there and Eisner was incredibly annoying. Always ..."on the other hand" kind of talk allowing for all sorts of leeway for Israels actions. The one that particularly got me was after watching the video of the rabid settler in Hebron who has gone into a Palestinian home and is calling the Palestinian woman a whore, Eisner questions whether this settlers right to freedom of speech as an Israeli citizen is something to be tampered with? Really????? I think she was an awful moderator.
This past Friday at Sheikh Jarrah. Let's hope those numbers keep growing.

We have heard from someone in Egypt who is helping to track her down that it is believed she is being detained somewhere in Cairo, possibly for having a fraudulent visa that she purchased unknowingly. Deportation seems likely, but we do not know anything definite as this point.
I am so excited to hear that Dr. Mads Gilbert is returning. I heard him at Columbia last year and he gave a slide show of the situation as Operation Cast Lead was happening. Many of the slides were of the injuries caused by DIME weapons and white phosphorous. It imprinted on my brain forever the horror of the attack on a civilian population and the suffering that no people should ever have to endure. He is a true friend of the Palestinian people and an astoundingly decent human being. Make a point to go see him and bring family and friends. I don't imagine anyone but the most heartless racist could condone what I saw during that presentation.
Thank You Ahmed, I love the photos! I am happy to contribute to your endeavor. Please take care of yourself. What you are doing is so important.
I love to read the comments, you are all great, but Witty, I skip over. Never have I heard anything but excuses from him. So he is against 1 state but for 2! So what! What has he done while his beloved Israel has continued to build settlements, imprison innocent Palestinians, bulldoze homes, support rabid settler movements, marginalize their own Palestinian citizens and worse. All in defiance of international law and basic morality. So please give me a break Don, he is entitled to his opinion and we all have a right to ignore him or call him out for what he is! A dangerous supporter of a aggressive Zionist state.
I’ve made a personal commitment to myself that if the U.S. attacks Iran I’m moving out of the country. I won’t be associated with the madness anymore.
Dan Kelly don't go!!! Seriously, can't we all commit to fighting a little harder this madness. I was at the Gaza Freedom Rally last night and Jeff Halper was speaking about "Global Gaza." The concept being that Gaza was and is an experiment in controlling unwanted populations that our country and others are most interested in. As the global economy worsens some of these tactics might be useful in other places in the world, even the U.S. He was encouraging in that he saw Israel as a house of cards that could come tumbling down. Probably not from U.S. gov't pressure though. Also, he said the BDS movement is being really effective in other parts of the world. Let's really decide to fight this monster with all we have. What say you???
Thank you so much for that link. I haven't finished yet, but much of what is in this book is new information to me since I have begun to study the I/P conflict. We tend to see others behavior from our own worldview and I have not been able to grasp the treatment of the Palestinians by Israeli jews and supported by American jews. This historical information is important to know.
