      P.S. The notion that European Jews (or Roma/Gypsies, gays, etc., for that matter) “went like sheep to the slaughter” and therefore would only safe in a Jewish nation-state is what I consider to be one of the most thoroughly disgusting propaganda creations of the Zionists! That is one travesty I will never forgive them for!

      • Experiment - Summary
      In the learned helplessness experiment an animal is repeatedly hurt by an adverse stimulus which it cannot escape.
      Eventually the animal will stop trying to avoid the pain and behave as if it is utterly helpless to change the situation.
      Finally, when opportunities to escape are presented, this learned helplessness prevents any action. The only coping mechanism the animal uses is to be stoical and put up with the discomfort, not expending energy getting worked up about the adverse stimulus. . .

      MY COMMENT: Lol! Yes, you are a regular Klaus Kinski and George W. Bush all rolled into one. No doubt about it!
      Is this undergraduate with a shock of dark hair a "psych" major? Or is he, like Stuart Smalley, just a "nurturing caregiver" and a member of several 12-step programs who is genuinely concerned about you?
      I seem to detect that this "narcissism" angle is an approach that some supporters of Israel are using in an effort to "neutralize" critics of Israeli policies by trying to subtly foster self-doubts on the part of these critics regarding what I see as their principled stands on the Israel-Palestine issue. You will recall that the world-renowned hasbarist/psychiatrist(lol) Marty Perez recently made a similar "diagnosis" regarding Peter Beinart. Of course, I'm certain these matching diagnoses of "narcissism" are either entirely coincidental or otherwise perhaps part of an epidemic suddenly afflicting critics of Israel (but certainly not supporters of Israel like Alan Dershowitz, Ed Koch, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Lindsey Graham, etc).
      I'm certainly no expert, but I have read many of your posts, and I just haven't detected many (if any) of the hallmarks of a narcissistic individual. Consequently, I wonder if the "big handsome young undergraduate with a shock of dark hair" might himself be a wee bit narcissistic; and perhaps he is "projecting" his own narcissism onto you. This is pure conjecture on my part, since I have no basis for drawing such a conclusion. Now as to Marty Perez . . .

      Hotchkiss identified what she called the seven deadly sins of narcissism:      [6]

      • Magical thinking: Narcissists see themselves as perfect, using distortion and illusion known as magical thinking. They also use projection to dump shame onto others.
      • Arrogance: A narcissist who is feeling deflated may reinflate by diminishing, debasing, or degrading somebody else.
      • Envy: A narcissist may secure a sense of superiority in the face of another person's ability by using contempt to minimize the other person.

      P.S. I think this is a brilliant film. Of course, Phil can't really appreciate it because he went to Harvard instead of M.I.T. or Rensselaer. And Harvard grads can't (or choose not to) comprehend that its really just all in the numbers.

      Avraham Burg was a pillar of the Israeli establishment but his new book is causing a sensation. It argues that Israel is an "abused child" which has become a "violent parent". And his solutions are radical, as he explains to Donald Macintyre.

      (excerpt). . .But his book "The Holocaust is Over: We Must Rise from its Ashes" – published this week in Britain – caused a much bigger sensation when it came out last year in Israel, at once becoming a best-seller and provoking a furious reaction not only from the right but from many of Burg's former colleagues on the political centre-left. In the book – a compelling mix of polemic, personal memoir, homage to his parents and meditation on Judaism – Burg argues that Israel has been too long imprisoned by its obsessive and cheapening use – or abuse – of the Holocaust as "a theological pillar of Jewish identity". He argues that the living role played by the Holocaust – Burg uses the regular Hebrew word Shoah or "catastrophe" for the extermination of six million Jews in the Second World War – in everyday Israeli discourse, has left Israel with a persistent self-image of a "nation of victims", in stark variance with its actual present-day power. Instead, the book argues, Israel needs finally to abandon the "Judaism of the ghetto" for a humanistic, "universal Judaism".
      The implication of Burg's analysis, one that perhaps only an Israeli would have dared promote, is that the fostered memory of the Holocaust hovers destructively over every aspect of Israeli political life – including its relations with the Palestinians since the 1967 Six Day War and the subsequent occupation. "We have pulled the Shoah out of its historical context," he writes, "and turned it into a plea and generator for every deed. All is compared to the Shoah, dwarfed by the Shoah and therefore all is allowed – be it fences , sieges ... curfews, food and water deprivation or unexplained killings. All is permitted because we have been through the Shoah and you will not tell us how to behave."
      For Burg, whose own father Yosef was a German Jew, and for many years leader of Israel's National Religious Party, the "real watershed moment" in this deforming process was the trial and subsequent execution in 1962 of Adolf Eichmann, which Yosef Burg vainly opposed from inside the Cabinet. Instead of Eichmann's death symbolising, as it was meant to do, "the end of the Shoah and the beginning of the post-Shoah period," he says, in reality "the opposite happened... The Shoah discourse had begun." I put it to Burg that for many Israeli holocaust survivors who during the late Forties and Fifties had had to brave the indifference, sometimes even contempt, of those of their fellow citizens who had already left Europe by the time the Shoah began – a painful phenomenon vividly covered in the book itself – the Eichmann trial was actually a liberation, a positive rather than negative, after which Israelis who had not lived through the Holocaust at last began to understand the pain of those who had.
      Burg's answer is that recognition and sympathy for the victims and survivors of the Holocaust are indeed essential components of "any kind of progress from the departure point of trauma to the final destination of trust". On the other hand "what I criticise in the Eichmann trial and the entire Shoah industry is the contempt, the cheapening attititude of the public system; everything is Shoah. It legitimises everything, it explains everything, it is used by everybody." Here he cites two everyday examples. . .

      REPLY: They certainly knew on some level that what they were doing was wrong. On the surface level they obviously knew that much of the world would consider it a heinous crime, and consequently considered it a PR problem to be managed through the use of propaganda (such as the film).
      Goebbels apparently had also at one point worked towards producing a propaganda film about the Warsaw ghetto that would try to make conditions there look not all that bad (see below).

      The hoax against the Red Cross was apparently so successful for the Nazis that they went on to make a propaganda film at Theresienstadt. Production of the film began on February 26, 1944. . .

      I'm not sure she knows it, but her great-grandfather was a Methodist minister and church official; and he sent all of his eight sons to Methodist-affiliated Emory, and all of his three daughters to Methodist-affiliated Wesleyan (in Macon, GA). One of his daughters was at Wesleyan when the students were roused late one night and told that Sherman was coming through. She had a rather difficult, but nonetheless exciting adventure getting home (about 50 miles away). It was truly the stuff of legends.
      Interestingly, as Sherman marched from Atlanta to the sea (Savannah), he split his forces into several contingents to maximize the pillaging and to create as much mayhem as possible. Fortunately, her hometown was spared with one contingent passing a few miles to the northeast and another passing a few miles to the southwest (somewhat akin to the parting of the Red Sea). I suppose I could call it Divine Intervention (that is, if I had a mind to). It was truly the stuff of myths!

      On Wednesday morning a group of 11 Norwegian students and their teacher joined Yassin Da'doua on his land to plant 200 olive trees as part of the olive tree planting campaign organized by Joint Advocacy Initiative of East Jerusalem YMCA and YWCA of Palestine.
      The group along with the Palestinian farmer and his family managed to plant half of the trees on Wednesday before the leader of the radical settler organization 'Women in Green', Nadia Matar, arrived along with two other Israeli settlers who started taking photos of the young Norwegians.
      “Your grandparents have killed my grandparents in the holocaust and now you are helping the Arabs to steal our land. This is the land for the people of Israel. You are helping the wrong people. You are like the Nazis.” Matar shouted at the Norwegian students. . .
      . . . “How can they call me a Nazi? My grandparents fought the Nazis during the second world war,” said one of the Norwegian students responding to Matar comments.

      MY COMMENT: This is also a nice example of the “testimonial” propaganda technique in the “Hasbara Handbook”. And here it is clear that he is taking/using it out of context (which the “Hasbara Handbook” implicitly endorses), since the incident did not occur in Eisner's "home" (Israel) but rather in the West Bank (more specifically, the Jordan Valley). What a very sick psyche!

      P.P.S. Anyway, I really wonder about someone who uses the film Rudy as a legal (or even moral) precedent of sorts. That is childish beyond belief, but then that's why I sometimes (only half-jokingly) refer to The Dissociative State of Israel™!

      MY COMMENT: This is a nice example of the "testimonial" propaganda technique in the "Hasbara Handbook" (using something mentioned by Freud, and quite possibly taking/using it out of context, which the "Hasbara Handbook" implicitly endorses). Also, in using (or more likely misusing) the anecdote from Freud, Engelhard has backhandedly equated the Danish cyclist with the Nazis which is the "name calling" propaganda technique from the "Hasbara Handbook".

      "I heard cries of 'Death to the Arabs,' and since I was still incensed by the Malha Mall attack, I decided that I had to confront them now," she said. "I made a sign reading 'Down with Beitar's racism.' I believed that since I'm not a young woman and since I was alone, at worst it would come to curses, no more."
      But it seems Margalit was wrong.
      "Within seconds they surrounded me and started spitting at me," she said. "They took away my sign, and one of them - actually an older fan - hit me on the head with the pole of his flag. None of the fans protected me, and one girl showed up and tried to argue with me."
      After a few seconds the fans continued on their way.

      . . . Last week I joined the pilgrims to Hebron on Passover eve. In the bus, one of them, using a derogatory term for Arabs, said loudly: “All the Arabushim should be sent to the stone crushers straight from the hospital, as soon as they’re born.” The whole bus roared with laughter. Some passengers muttered at us, a reporter and a photographer, the only secular people on the bus: “Collaborators, there are collaborators on the bus.” Nobody protested, naturally.
      The thousands of pilgrims to Hebron, with their myriads of supporters, belong to another nation, with no connection or resemblance to the nation of Tel Aviv. Every society has an extreme right wing today, but in a small, fragile society like ours, this could become fatal. The United States can afford its dark Christian right and remain a democracy. Israel cannot. Can anyone guarantee that the hostile tone from the fortified bus to Hebron won't turn into the prevailing tone? Clearly things are heading in that direction and nobody is doing anything to stop it.
      Nobody is doing anything to stop democracy from rupturing, nobody is stopping Israel on its way to becoming a pariah, even more than it is already. . . .
