Sometimes poetry has the necessary flexibility to express one's thoughts better than prose. IIRC the BBC report mentioned Gunter Glass was having his normal English translator to provide his intents in translation. Another translation posted by: anonymous | Apr 4, 2012 8:21:48 PM | 38 in the MoonofAlabama (linked above) comments also reads well but may have taken liberties from the original. The Guardian's version hardly matched the original from Süddeutschen Zeitung even a non-reader of German could see what a raw attempt at translation it was (maybe the press of time to publish had a bearing).
As for what Gunter Glass did at the end of WW II as a youth, passed away with that youth. The chaotic desperation of loosing to vastly superior Soviet military might put many children into harms way, the children had little recourse to object. It is Gunter Glass's breaking the silence both in "The Tin Drum" and later in "Peeling the Onion" that provides a means of salvation for not only that generation as well as for succeeding generations to know the horrors of war. Almost no one involved in actual combat from any country ever easily spoke of their experiences, German, English, Soviet, French, Japanese or U.S, it is something that will be found in the aftermath of any war. It is the silence that nurtures the festering of fear and the false gods of future wars.

Two writers have provided the goalposts whenever zionist/Palestine is discussed. First is Norman Finkelstein's "Beyond Chutzpah, On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History" (ISBN 0-520-24598-9), the other is Robert Fisk's "The Great War for Civilization, The Conquest of the Middle East" (ISBN 9-84115-007-X). If whatever claim is being made fails to pass between these posts, no points are scored, simple as that. This tends to weed out most self-serving propaganda, half-truths, misleadings and fabrications, most of which hits the ground well before even reaching these goalposts.
Occam's razor is required when full pertinent facts are either unknown or unknowable. ¿What is the least complex way something can be explained? The actors and the "war on drugs" itself are hidden from public scrutiny, mendacity and corruption are rife, the interests of promoters and their opposition coincide in continuing the status quo, and the judicial system is fully corrupted. If it is ever exposed to the full light of day, it would not be surprising what crawls out from under any overturned rock involved in the war on drugs.
Mexico has been used before sans raison as set-up to begin war. See what wiki has to say about the Zimmerman note. Funny how it was exposed just before the Lusitania was torpedoed off the Cork coast while awaiting military protection to proceed (that protection cancelled by orders from the Admiralty 1st Lord, Winston Churchill iirc). This current play looks like a rerun of that, why let a successful ploy go to waste, just rearrange the deck chairs a little and no-one will remember the Titanic either.

From serendipitous readings, the roots of this do go back further in time. The deal was agreed between Israel, BG and Fatah in the early 2000's after the deposits were discovered and estimated. Best guess is Fatah hierarchy approved (receiving favourable lubrication, as usual) but Arafat disapproved and stood in the way (could explain Arafat's final years and possible demise) of closure, possibly in reaction to being blindsided at the Clinton Camp David fiasco. Just as agreement with free from Arafat Fatah was to be concluded, Hamas won the democratic election for parliament in Palestine, twisting the knickers of the Israeli's no end - Israeli tail caught in the bunch. Fatah tried to wrest control of government from Hamas by effecting a coup; successfully in the West Bank, not so in Gaza at which time Israel turned off all economic income into Gaza. By shear force, Israel removed all its occupying settlers from Gaza and the assault upon Gaza began at that time, squeezing, blocking, throttling the Gazan economy until survival became the overriding consideration for the population. Much of the above can be found in the substance of the links mentioned above or implied from the actual history of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Following the money will show a very ugly story.

Just how this is not a gross violation of personal dignity for the Palestinian culture, or any other for that matter, is beyond reckoning.

After watching Al Jazeera today, it was reported that the police have completely disappeared from the streets when the army came in last night. Some of today's looters were identified having state security identification (police?) papers and state issued weapons, leading to the observation that the regime is instigating the looting to create fear in the public and to appear to be able to control the problem, assuring the regime's retention of power. That may also explain the army's reported reluctance to step in and intervene against the looters as has been reported. The problem that arises in the midst of chaos is there are seldom clear-cut answers to many questions, the best defense is a sharp Occam's razor.
As diversionary as the official Israeli propaganda machinations are, there seems to be a missing narrative. Just why would the hermetic sealing of Gaza be necessary, particularly importantly that of sea access that Israel would risk the blow-back from their actions knowing these will be reported to the world. What would Israel be hiding that is going on in those seas that would be exposed by transit?
Narrowly known is Gaza's territorial waters contain 4 or 5 Billion dollars worth of petroleum products in the form of gas. Are those deposits being mined? Are underwater pipelines being lain? Are other petroleum resources being drilled unbeknownst to supply Israel vital energy resources? The crimes being committed show that something generally unknown and being kept secret is behind the telltale curtain of keeping "arms" from Gaza. Why is it so important that all traffic be kept from these areas? Transparency will never be forthcoming from pathological liars, the light of day must prevail.

CS is a Chemical Warfare (CW) substance having the capability to disrupt and disable unprotected soldiers. Unlike policing tear-gas, which is dispersed in a vapour form from a heated cartridge, CS can be dispersed as a concentrated powder along with CS in vapour form. The first effect CS has is to the eyes, causing uncontrolled tearing and incapacity to keep eyes open, effectively blinding the recipient. Also the inhalation of the substance causes pulmonary distress that interferes with the ability to breathe, effecting asphyxia on the recipient. Continuing exposure to breathing CS vapour or especially powder causes a chemically induced pneumonia to the victim. The victim will attempt to expel these chemicals from the body to regain normal function. Vomiting is the attempt to expel the substance from the esophagus (and lungs), the frothing at the mouth is evidence of the pneumonia reaction of the lungs attempting to clear the chemical from those organs.
Witnesses stated that CS was laid down in front of the protesters bringing them to a halt, then behind the protesters cutting off their retreat, and then more was laid down in their midst. Pictures taken show little or no wind dispersal, the fog and dust hung in the air over the protesters. Those who were able made their escape to uncontaminated ground, protecting themselves as best they could while recovering from the CW assault. One could not. Blinded by the CS, not breathing is not an option, further gassing set into motion the fatal pneumonia and chemical poisoning causing death. Any other narrative suggesting some other cause is patently false, and the source of that narrative is a provocative liar in the service of propaganda.
The reason CS is a chemical weapon rather than a policing tool is the strength of its affect. At one time, it was restricted to military use only and the recipients were provided counter measures that enabled survival but restricted the recipient's ability to respond. Civilian populations are not equipped to protect themselves from tear-gas' more lethal counterpart. But then, what does one expect from an immoral army in pursuit of amoral goals, which uses white phosphorus and cluster bombs on captive populations indiscriminately.

CS is a weapon of chemical warfare as are the nerve agents (famously used by Sadam on Kurd villages) and various blistering agents and blood affecting agents (most are listed in the wikipedia reference). Tear gas is used to affect the tear glands, watering the vision and to cause a choking sensation. CS is substantially more powerful and is a military weapon for military conflicts, not a policing weapon for defenseless civil populations.
The use of CS against the civilian population is a war crime as well as a crime against humanity. Israel Defense Forces have lost any claim to legitimacy with CS use against civilians. The government that orders such actions has also lost all claim to legitimacy as well. Only when there is justice will there be peace, may that day soon arrive.

Having witnessed the Israeli atrocity "Cast Lead" against the undefended population of the Gaza Concentration Camp from Europe where, with few exceptions, a responsible press still operates, the propaganda aimed at destroying the name and earned reputation of Judge Goldstone and his measured report upon those atrocities clearly highlights the growing dysfunction of numerous here-to-fore "respectable governments". The Washington/Tel Aviv axis of evil has become openly vile and have surrendered all considerations of legitimacy as democratic entities. Their place in history as tyrannical and despotic governments is now assured, their power derived by force, fear and coercion. Going to the roots, this. Until the question of self-determination is settled by the Palestinian peoples, the conflict between Zionists and Palestinians cannot be settled and leaves a cloud of illegitimacy over the establishment of the state of Israel and all that has followed. Israel will remain a state founded on claims jumping and land grabbing exacerbated and compounded by terror inflicted upon a stateless, defenseless population. Those original terrorists controlled the state of Israel and have not relinquished the power of the state since, directing and controlling the continuing application of terror upon the Palestinians remaining and avoiding having to answer for their continuing crimes. Kathleen has had fierce opposition at FDL from the "establishment" there since the beginning when even the use of AIPAC would set off the filters and put a comment into moderation. There had been numerous encounters with various "moderators" over some issue or another, finally getting "kathleen" banned from commenting. Fortunately "Leen" was allowed to continue commenting and even posting on the "sentinel" open post, invariably attracting the FDL's hasbara disinformation unit(s) to disrupt all comments the post generated. Siun also "enjoys" that same attention and there is rare intervention by most of the moderators (with one notable exception) most of the time.
Would also comment that there is a strange perception concerning the ability to exercise free speech at FDL. A commentator may lie, spread falsehoods, disrupt the flow of information, inject disinformation and make a shambles of another's presentation as long as "comity" is observed. But should you assert a strong objection to those things your ability to have a voice disappears along with your assertion. It is a place that has not matured beyond the machinations of a high school "in group" and is certainly incapable of adult behavior to anything else than their sense of propriety. After three such exposures, I no longer comment there.

An interesting artifact of an earlier time is David Lamb's "The Arabs, Journeys Beyond the Mirage" ISBN 0-394-54433-1, © 1987. The book attempts to introduce the Islamic/Muslim world to American readers in the wake of the Beirut bombings and kidnappings. In hindsight, it is an attempt to reconcile the events with an ongoing mythological perception of the Middle East, Muslims, and the Arabic culture. Already terms like clash of cultures, Islamoterrorism and a strong ethnocentric perspective are being applied to the complex culture of the region. These same perceptions were seen again after 9/11 and were the basis of the military attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq and are cropping up still in justification for the economic sanctions and military threats to Iran. There is a continuous train of time-frozen perception running through the entire history of US relations with the Middle East and Islamic worlds that is not a coincidence congruent with the stated perceptions fundamental to the Israeli/Zionist agenda against Palestinian interests. Although the book is not new, it does show a long history and a continuity from far earlier modern times, and a connection with the current I/P conflict that suggests the underlying agreed agenda of the US and its client. The book is an unintended study in propaganda and misinformation that colors today's headlines, and anti-muslim prejudice, the headwaters/wellsprings being the same that brought the Zionist message to the world's attention. Curious that.

Hi Kathleen, you have identified the seeds from which the phenomena arise. You also have to remember there must be fertile ground for those seeds to grow. That fertile ground is provided by a group undergoing stress for which that group has no ability to help, protect or defend itself which also is an existential problem. The Germans of the hyper-inflation saw their world shattered, and there was nothing available from their leaders that had any effect to alleviate and the National Socialists blamed the Jew, the communist, those in the labour movement for their tribulation and thereby gained governmental power. It took the destruction of German power, government, economy, state, and the German myth and self-image to bring the madness to an end.
The Zionists settling in Palestine usurped the land from the inhabitants and unilaterally created their state, Israel. My observation was more linguistic in nature. In the three score and seven years of my experience certain words are known to be very specific in their meaning, both Fascist and Nazi so qualify. What I read here those words are taking on a plasticity that obliterates the original essence and meaning of the words, the result becomes a carnival hall of mirrors, distorting meaning until there is no memory of meaning remaining. Have it your way, my days are numbered and it shall not matter.
My attempt to distinguish between traditionally recognized and currently perceived conditions failed. Like another wrote here of the dividing and branching nature of historical developments. It was in this context that I referred to a small subset. Sorry this is the only use of language I know, that it no longer serves to communicate with the accuracy that was intended is a loss.
As for familiarity with reality, that statement is presumptuous as well as revealing the writers hubris; and as for attempting to appear, it would probably come as a surprise, there are some people who have tried not to loose their connections with their humanity, whether or not their heritage is Judean.

The term used, israelo-fascism, strikes the senses as off color, a misdirection, an inaccuracy.

The accurate subset of both these larger groups are Zionists or Zionistas (if a word needs be coined) and their Ultra-orthodox enablers.
Secondly, the term Fascism has a meaning and it is being egregiously used here. Fascism is (n) the authoritarian form of government characterized by extreme right wing nationalism, militarism, anti-communism, restricted individual freedoms, an alliance of state and corporate (elite) interests. Whereas a related Nazism incorporated the purity of race and fascism as the operating dynamic.
Zionazi may be the term necessary if one is to be coined (and in scrabble you get to use two "Z's") and the part of the public actually denoted is limited to specifically those exhibiting the objectionable characteristics. Not having a specific designation in common use misdirects attention to many undeserving coreligionists who are for the most part not supportive of the actual behavior.

Realizing comprehension is becoming a rarity, some folk wisdom learned in the family was: "It costs as much to fence an 80 (acres) in as it does to fence it out (of a section)". Needless to say, comprehending the import of that wisdom will be left to the reader as there are no right answers, just better ones.
The glaring fact fundamental to the Palestinian/Israeli "problem" is the question of security; this applies equally to both parties. That security will only happen when the Palestinians become secure in their dealings with the Israelis; mirrored exactly from Israel's perspective.
It is when a nation's body of political beliefs become based upon lies and propaganda, whatever its marketing, those beliefs become nothing but lies and self-deceptions, and from those fertile grounds all manner of barbarous acts are born. It's ultimately not important who lied first, what becomes important that the flow of lies is stopped and account is made of the human costs of those lies, responsibility taken for those acts rooted in those deceptions, and all efforts are made to terminate those lies.
Peace will return to Palestine only when the Israelis act to secure the interests of the Palestine people and the Palestine people in turn act to secure the interests of the Israeli, to bring to an end the crimes committed, one upon the other from the beginning. At this point in history, inclusiveness is the only resolution remaining, the eviction or political enslavement of one or the other can only lead to more crimes being committed, or so it would seem; certainly the psychosis and bad blood is obviously not the way forward. That justice that once ruled the Jewish people needs be applied to their Palestinian cousins and returned in equal measure, it does the least harm and is the most likely to change history, for the better.

To pass judgment upon the Lady set at today's standards is perversely anachronistic, Helen was obviously speaking from anamnesis that most no longer share, and fueled by honest outrage at the inhumanity exhibited. The world has less integrity than Helen Thomas, and nary a foot to stand on to level criticism in her direction. If anything, Helen Thomas' remarks were righteously drawn. On this, the world needs to listen, stifle its ill-considered opinions, and Respect an Elder.
One last remark, what shabby treatment Helen Thomas ended her service, only adds to the light being shown upon the atrocities and wrongs being perpetrated upon a weak, proud, and honorable peoples. In that, Helen goes in a blaze of glory.

If what is being said is not congruent with any or all these sources, it will not stand close inspection in the light of day; of that you can rest assured.
It is sad to see so many sell their souls, defending the indefensible, obdurately obstructing the dissemination of information, dissembling and utilizing all the various tools of propaganda to cast doubt where doubt does not exist. These people are a cancer, wherever they practice their deceptions. Those still retaining conscientiousness must expose them to the light of day for the evil they represent and the danger they pose to the continuity of humanity itself.
