I have recently become a fan of reddit.com. I love their feature that allows one to upvote or downvote comment and comment threads. The most relevant, interesting, funny or informative comments bubble up to the top. I know that reddit is open source, but it may be lots of work to make something like that work with wordpress.
High five to all the BILLMON fans here.
I have an Amira Hass story of my own.
Several years ago, I used to write a column called "Hug a Jew" for my online magazine. I would pick a Jewish person who's work I admired, and I would give them a big hug, take pictures and write a (sometimes funny) article about their work. The column was more popular, revolutionary and disarming that I would have ever imagined. Writers of this blog would be ideal candidates if I were still doing it. I would fly to Phili.
Amir Hass is the only Jew who ever refused. Which is fine. Jug a Jew requires a bit of silliness and she appeared very serious. She said a flat "no", but then she added "if read my view on Hamas and you would not want hug me". I mumbled something about knowing and liking her views on Hamas, but she brushed me aside. Liat Wiengart of JVP and professor Joel Benin (both hugged in prior months) looked on with embarrassment. I looked like a Hamas supporter to Amira Hass.
Someday children will watch this video after they finish reading Ann Frank
"Saudis are fat, spoiled and apathetic"
Maybe you mean Saudi ruling class. Saudi Arabia has a population of 26 million. Most of them do not share the wealth. Egypt's billionare ruling class is fat and spoiled also. Maybe Saudi is not Egypt. What makes you think that Saudi and Bahrain have distributed the oil wealth any better than Libya?

List of all US vetoes at the UN. Read the entire list.
Here is an article from Gawker that explains how Facebook did not give a hoot about the uprising. The online organizing succeeded in spite of Facebooks attempts to suppress it.

Of course, it is a bit self-indulgent of us Americans to think that our cute little technologies were on the side of good. The uprising blossomed the day the internet went dead in Egypt.

If this woman had sung in Iran, she would have brought down the regime. The MSM would have played her 24/7. Lets make her go viral, and bring down more tyrants and stereotypes.
Of course, the stupid Obama admin has made it illegal to have this, or any other conversation with Hamas.
Jewicy and JStreet start a petition to oppose ADL. (Unrelated to Iran, I know)

BTW, the books section of this Sunday's NYT has a review of two new books on Commentary and Podhurtz. I am surprised to not see any mention of it here. It almost seems like it was written for MondoWeiss.
If there ever was an artifact that was crying out to go viral this is it. Lets brainstorm to see how we can make it happen. We should go nuts, like those Save Darfur folks. I will get the ball rolling on the brainstrom:
we set up a website called beduinOfIsrael.com. put up this video and a few history links. The we start a chain letter. Force 10 of your friends to watch it.
Any ideas?
GROUPS allowed
PAGES not allowed
She is Jillian York. Not Cork.
And Facebook allows groups with horrible "P" word in the name, but not pages.
"This is not editing. It is surrender. It is not journalism; it is acquiescence to propaganda."
I think that it is worse than that. Acquiescence to propaganda would be if they allowed both sides to sway them. They dont care that someone disputes the word "terrorism", or that someone was disputing "torture" back when others were doing it. No. They are the originators of propaganda.
Maybe we should think about promoting it on film websites like imdb and rottentomatoes etc.

No mention of the the Jewish establishment. I am learning to read the newspaper like mondo himself.
Stratfor fires its own propaganda missiles in Israel's defense.
"It is vital that the Israelis succeed in portraying the flotilla as an extremist plot." The article does not say vital for whom. Maybe for Statfor. There is a lot of talk of "enemies of Israel" but no mention of enemies of Palestinians.

I use Google Reader to read MondoWeiss. Today I came to the website itself. This article and a few others did not show up on the Google Reader feed. The one about Comedy Channel did not come through either. Am I missing something?

"12 percent of Americans hold anti-Semitic views" I wonder what criteria were used. I wonder what percentage of American Jews hold racist views, according to similar criteria.
Bravo. I hope you got paid handsomely, and that this is the start of many paid gigs. I love the intimacy of your writing style, and I hope that you will publish more essays that tell stories of personal transformations.
I remember that Woody Allen and others broke from Israel in 1982. What is happening now is, of course, much more significant.
Richard, that is exactly what J Street claims to be doing. Read the first quoted paragraph again.
Of course, we all disagree what a progressive Israel would look like. J Street advocates Jim Crow segregation. Most honest progressives advocate a single non-Zionist state for all citizens. Israel can not be Jewish state and still be progressive.
"Oren has passed up an important opportunity to speak up for Palestinian human rights"
I think you mean Jeremy Ben-Ami of J Street has. No?
Is it racist to insist that Arabs cant be trusted?
What do I do with the knowledge that 75% of American Jewish people are racist?
Somewhat unrelated...
Reminder: Roman Polanski raped a child
Polanski supporters seem to have so much in common with Israel supporters. " Sure, Israel did some horrible things, but has it not suffered enough? Look at all of Israel's talent and democracy. Have pity on the holocaust orphan. " I can see Benny Morris argue that Polanski should have finished his child rape job by drowning the child in the hottub.
Horseshit! One way to show sincerity would be submit US soldiers, high command and mercenaries to Afghan law. Let Afghans investigate and prosecute Blackwater murders, Bargham prison, wedding bombings and other crimes. Let McChrystal and company stand trail and serve time in Afghan prisons. Then we can talk.
Maybe next time we can be ready for the "boycott/blacklist counter attack. The list of artists boycotted and black listed by friends of Israel is long. I was just looking at Vanessa Redgrave's wikipedia page and noticing all the weasel words. PLO are terrorists, but JDL is only accused of "terrorism" (in quotes) by the FBI. There are editorial comments about the sources of ME conflicts, and FrontPage magazine articles as the sole sources. Time for me to learn more about Wiki rules and antiquates.
PG, the Brand Index and the Peace Index obviously use different criteria. Of course Israel is near the bottom of both for many interconnected reasons.
We patted our own selves on the back for knocking some sense into Roger Ebert. The real kudos belongs to JVP and the original drafters. I admire how well prepared they were in anticipating the sleazy counter attack. Next time lets help them prepare even better.
The fact that Brand Israel is close to last is a massive failure for Brand Israel. The fact that Iran is dead last is a massive win for them. Nobody else really cares that much about Iran.
Roger Ebert says "It was naive for the plan's supporters to believe it would have the effect they hoped for." It was not such a bad calculation. People like Ebert have dutifully and reliably rolled over in the past. In many ways Ebert's retreat was a first.
"Mr Goldstone’s daughter, Nicole, who lived in Israel for many years but now lives in Canada, vigorously defended her father’s report in an interview on the army radio. “If it hadn’t been for him, the report would have been even harsher,” she said, speaking in Hebrew."

Its a hateful piece. It repeats the propaganda lie that the protest was about Israeli art. And this:
"In cinematic London, Hamas militants are the new baby seals."
No. Arab children are the new baby seals. Noone is defending Hamas.
Thank you Dan. High fives all around. Yes Mondo, I want front page credits. (joking)
One reason why Ebert listened to us is because MondoWeiss has raised the bar on the debate.
Now I put on my Philip Weiss hat and scream THIS IS HUGE. I explain why. My favorite part is that even the "friends" of Israel who thought of this stunt are running away from the "Brand Israel" Brand. The game has changed. Gaza did it. In the past they would have waved the Brand Israel flag proudly in our faces and shut us up. Ebert would have risked unemployment. Now they seem to be saying "no, no, this was all innocent. We would not shove something sleazy like Brand Israel in your faces. We are good people."
Gene Siskel had his own neo-con Iraq moment on the movie reviews show. He boldly endorsed hateful portrayal of Arabs and Muslims in special show dedicated to denouncing hateful ethnic stereotypes. Presumably he thought that the hateful portrayals were good for the Jews. Roger Ebert sad there in silence. That was about 1995. In 2009 Roger Ebert would give him a smack down, and JVP, Modoweiss and the Jewish people of Atlanta would be there to back him up.
I have a lot of thoughts bubbling up on this subject, maybe even a full blown Mondo guest post :).
(BTW I am Pakistani American living in San Francisco. I have been a daily reader and evangelist of mondo since the early days. I comment rarely. Nice to meet you all. We are a team now.)
Hey Roger Ebert changed his mind about TIFF after we wrote to him. This would not have happened in the pre-Gaza world. Dan from this comments section helped me.
"I'm writing this the day after first posting this entry. I now regret it. The point I make about artists is perfectly valid but I realize I wasn't prepared with enough facts about the events leading up to the Festival's decision to showcase Tel Aviv in the City-to-City section. I thought of it as an innocent goodwill gesture, but now realize it was part of a deliberate plan to "re-brand" Israel in Toronto, as a pilot for a larger such program. The Festival should never have agreed to be used like this. It was naive for the plan's supporters to believe it would have the effect they hoped for. The original entry remains below. The first 50 or so comments were posted before these regrets."
Hey Dan, Look! Ebert changed his mind after we wrote to him.

More shame in Tornoto. Roger Ebert lies about the "boycott". I hope many of you let him know your feelings.

Roger Ebert is responsible for the most disgraceful thing ever said in a movie review. Siskel and Ebert show did a special on bigotry in movie in the mid 90's. They showed examples of and denounced negative portrayals of Blacks, Jews, Asians, native Americans and women. At the very end of the show they quickly brought up Arabs and Muslims and actually accepted and approved of the bigotry. Gene Siskel said that Arabs will always be portrayed this way since they are always blowing things up. Ebert nodded in agreement, and that was the end of the show.
Welcome back. Hope you are well rested.
