B.S. Ga. Tech ~ J.D. (law) Mercer U. [Also see - http://mondoweiss.net/profile/dickerson3870] • One of the reasons I began following developments in the Middle East has to do with the happenstance that I was away from Atlanta visiting my grandfather (with little to do but read) in June, 1967. In that part of Georgia, the television reception with a rotating antenna was much better for the Augusta and Macon stations than it was for the Atlanta stations, but since the programming of the Augusta and Macon stations was not up to Atlanta standards, the television was seldom used. This time though, as luck (or not) would have it, one of the two Augusta stations preempted its daytime programming with the deliberations by the UN General Assembly of proposals that might lessen the likelihood of war. I very much enjoyed watching several days of this, and I was very disappointed when I got up on June 5 and the station had reverted to its customary daytime programming because Israel had bombed the Egyptian air force on the tarmac in Egypt. Needless to say, I did not at all see Israel's action(s) as defensive. All told, this made quite a lasting impression (unfavorable as to Israel) on me! • I recall one particular Six Day War joke that was told by a classmate of mine (not one of my Jewish friends, who were much less chauvinistic) during my senior year of high school here in Atlanta (the year following the Six Day War). Actually, to be more accurate, I only remember the gist of the joke at this point. As I recall the joke (told by a Jewish female), there was a busload of Egyptian children somewhere in the Sinai. The punchline was that the mighty Israeli military virtually vaporized the entire bus full of Egyptian children. [Riotous laughter here, excepting me.] There wasn't a single survivor! ["Ha, ha, ha" (excepting me) ! ! ! ] •Another reason I began paying close attention the Israel/Palestine issue was because Israel's actions/behavior seemed so very much unlike the actions/behavior of my Jewish friends. Consequently, I have spent decades trying to understand the incongruity. • Lastly, since the U.S. unfortunately seems to emulate Israel in many ways (preemptive wars, Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, for instance), I have come to be especially concerned about Israel's behavior (which might unfortunately be adopted by our own government). I tend not to worry quite so much (though perhaps I should) that the U.S will emulate Rwanda, Uzbekistan, Belarus or Myanmar/Burma. This "monkey see, monkey do" phenomenon that seems to occur between the U.S. and Israel illustrates my fear that Likudnik Israel (specifically by virtue of its inordinate sway over the U.S.) with its Revisionist Zionism might very well be an “existential threat” to the values of The Enlightenment ! ! !

  • Wiesel lauds settlers for 'strengthening the Jewish presence in Jerusalem' -- and expelling Palestinians

      MY COMMENT: Don't give poor Elie Wiesel such a hard time. He probably just did it for the money, and he's been desperate for funds* since took a beating on his investments with Bernie Madoff. So blame it all on Madoff.

      * SEE: "Elie Wiesel, Moral Mercenary", by Richard Silverstein, Tikun Olam, 2/09/10

      [EXCERPTS] Did you know morality is for sale? No? Well, as far as Elie Wiesel is concerned it is. If the Palestinians had $500,000 THEY might find moral favor in Elie’s eyes as well. You see, since Bernie Madoff blew Wiesel’s foundation assets, I guess he’s found a need to sell his scruples to the highest bidder. Last year that would’ve been John Hagee, before whose Christians United for Israel conference Wiesel pronounced the anti-Semite and homophobe his “dear pastor”:

      For delivering one speech to Hagee’s congregation, Wiesel received a check for $500,000 toward his foundation, according to Marita Styrsky, the wife of Christians United for Israel Eastern Regional Director Victor Styrsky (Christians United is Hagee’s lobbying arm)

      . . . And the next time you hear of some good deed performed by the Elie Wiesel Foundation remember it’s probably funded by a man who said that Hitler was half-Jewish and doing the work of the Lord, John Hagee.

      ■ ANOTHER FAMOUS MARIETTAN, FROM WIKIPEDIA [J.B. Stoner]:

      (EXCERPTS) Jesse Benjamin "J.B." Stoner (April 13, 1924 – April 23, 2005) was an American segregationist who was convicted in 1980 of the bombing in 1958 of the Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.[1]
      He was a founder and long-time chairman of the National States' Rights Party and publisher of its newsletter, "The Thunderbolt". Stoner unsuccessfully attempted to run as a Democrat for several political offices in order to promote his white supremacist agenda. . .
      . . . Stoner earned a law degree, and served as the attorney for James Earl Ray . . .
      . . . Stoner once said that "being a Jew [should] be a crime punishable by death".[1] He ran the National States' Rights Party, which attracted such fringe political figures as A. Roswell Thompson, a perennial Democratic candidate for governor of Louisiana and mayor of New Orleans. . .
      . . . Stoner ran for governor of Georgia in 1970. During this campaign, where he called himself the "candidate of love", he described Hitler as "too moderate," black people as an extension of the ape family, and Jews as "vipers of hell."[1] The primary was won by civil rights supporter and future President Jimmy Carter. Stoner then ran for the United States Senate in 1972, finishing fifth in the Democratic Party primary with just over 40,000 votes. The nomination and election went to Sam Nunn.
      During his Senate campaign, the FCC ruled that television stations had to play his ads due to the fairness doctrine. His ads included the word "ni**er."
      . . .
      Stoner also ran for lieutenant governor in 1974 . . .
      . . . In his 1974 lieutenant governor campaign, Stoner placed signs on the Macon Transit Company buses, which Mayor Thompson ordered removed. Stoner promptly went to federal court to secure the return of his paid signs under his First Amendment protection. . .

      ■ ALSO SEE: "U.S. publisher who called for Obama assassination proves ‘Israel-firsters’ exist" ~ by Yossi Gurvitz, +972 Magazine, 1/21/12

      [EXCERPTS] Andrew Adler is the publisher of the Atlanta Jewish Times, and soon he’ll have to spare some time from his busy schedule to answer questions from Secret Service agents. Why? Because, when opining last week on just how Israel should deal with Iran, Adler unleashed a fantasy, and wrote that “[option] three, give the go-ahead for U.S.-based Mossad agents to take out a president deemed unfriendly to Israel in order for the current vice president to take his place, and forcefully dictate that the United States’ policy includes its helping the Jewish state obliterate its enemies.” . . .
      . . . Adler has since issued a non-apology: “I very much regret it, I wish I hadn’t made reference to it at all,” he told the JTA. It is worth noting that Adler is a Chabadnik, i.e. a member of a religious faction which has already shown an unhealthy interest in assassinations. Harry Shapiro, a Chabadnik, was convicted of planting a pipe bomb in a synagogue visited by Shimon Peres in Jacksonville back in 1997. A leading Chabad rabbi in Israel, Dov Wolfa, has flirted with the supporters of Yigal Amir, Rabin’s assassin. I think it is safe to assume that an Islamic movement with this sort of record would find itself under, shall we say, intense scrutiny by the authorities.
      Now, no one would mistake me for a supporter of either the Netanyahu government or Israel’s out-of-control security establishment, but I am certain that had anyone suggested such a covert operation to Netanyahu, that person would be fired on the spot. And that even had Netanyahu entertained such an idea, the leadership of Mossad would submit their resignation rather than going along with the plan. . .

      ■ AND SEE: : "Peter ‘Powder Keg’ Beinart is disinvited from gig at Atlanta Jewish book festival", by Annie Robbins, Mondoweiss, 11/05/12

      [EXCERPTS] The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA) has dis-invited liberal Zionist Peter Beinart from a speaking engagement at its annual Jewish book festival, presumably because he has called for a boycott of settlement goods, and it’s causing quite a stir. Everyone from J Street to Holocaust historian Deborah Lipstadt is weighing in. The event is expected to attract over 10,000 people this year. Beinart is one of 55 authors, some best selling, listed on MJCCA’s 2012 festival brochure. His talk, named “Zionist Zeal” about his book 'The Crisis of Zionism', is listed on page 16, relegated to a spot alongside "Low Cal Gal" Lisa Lillian and right above Marni Davis’s "Jews and Booze".
      The center’s president and CEO are now defending their decision to cancel Beinart’s invitation, claiming that once that brochure went out with word of Beinart’s appearance, protests came “pouring in.”
      However, just how many of the center’s 18,000 members participated in this screeching avalanche of disapproval is not information Steven Cadranel, the president of the MJCCA, is willing to disclose. Nor is he saying if any arm twisting measures were employed. After all, it’s entirely possible merely a few big donors expressed their disapproval in a way that could impact the economic future of the center and phff… and so, for the first time in the history of the festival, a scheduled writer’s invitation went kaput. . .

      [EXCERPTS] . . . For one week last month, Bexar County Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz swapped his cowboy hat for a yarmulke as he visited Israel on an organized trip with other law enforcement leaders.
      “I’ve always had an interest in Israel,” he said in an interview Tuesday. “It was a great conference.”
      Ortiz joined 16 other sheriffs, police chiefs and organization heads, including Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland, on a week-long trip, courtesy of the Jewish Institute for National Security’s Law Enforcement Exchange Program.
      The group toured a hospital’s trauma unit, Israeli Arab villages, sites of terrorist attacks, border crossings, police offices and the country’s security fence. Based on the itinerary, most of the sites and speeches focused on terrorism and security.
      Ortiz said he was impressed by Israel Defense Force soldiers, who he said are trained as soldiers and as police officers.
      “If we ever deploy troops along the Texas border, they should have training in being a soldier and in law enforcement,” he said...

      ■ AND SEE: Israel trip an eye-opening experience for Jefferson chief, By Adina Solomon, onlineathens.com, 07/18/11

      This summer, Jefferson Police Chief Joe Wirthman went on a two-week trip 6,000 miles away, traveling across Israel with a delegation of state law enforcement officers as part of the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange.
      "It was an awesome trip," he said. "A trip of a lifetime."
      GILEE, which partners with Georgia State University, sends a different group of Georgia officers every summer to work with Israeli law enforcement and border control.
      Commerce Police Chief John Gaissert and University of Georgia Police Chief Jimmy Williamson also have gone in past years.

      The object of the program is to learn how Israeli police deal with terrorism every day...
      ...After his trip, Wirthman is trying to think one step ahead with the Jefferson Police Department, preparing for the type of threatening situations Israel faces 24 hours a day, he said.
      "Hopefully it'll never happen, but in this world, 'never' isn't a word," Wirthman said. "We're not invincible here."
      He's also witnessed how people live their daily lives with the constant menace of terrorism, he said.
      Wirthman met one man who sends each of his children on a different bus to school. In case one of the buses is bombed, only one of his three children will be harmed.
      "I don't know if I could raise my family under those conditions," said Wirthman, who has three kids of his own.
      And nobody in Israel grumbles about it, he said. Instead, they have a strong national pride many Americans had only after 9/11, he said..."

    • RE: "Many of these connected the struggle for justice in Palestine to those other oppressed peoples around the world, particularly those in Ferguson . . ." ~ Ben Norton

      ■ ACCORDING TO AN ARTICLE at ElectronicIntifada.net:

      [EXCERPTS] At least two of the four law enforcement agencies that were deployed in Ferguson up until Thursday evening — the St. Louis County Police Department and the St. Louis Police Department — received training from Israeli security forces in recent years. . .
      . . . While there is a wealth of scholarship on police militarization in the US, there has been little to no examination of the ways Israel’s security apparatus facilitates it.

      Decades of testing and perfecting methods of domination and control on a captive and disenfranchised Palestinian population has given rise to a booming “homeland security industry” in Israel that refashions occupation-style repression for use on marginalized populations in other parts of the world, including St. Louis.

      Under the cover of counterterrorism training, nearly every major police agency in the United States has traveled to Israel for lessons in occupation enforcement, a phenomenon that journalist Max Blumenthal dubbed “the Israelification of America’s security apparatus.” Israeli forces and US police departments are so entrenched that the New York City Police Department (NYPD) has opened a branch in Tel Aviv.

      In 2011, then St. Louis County Police Department chief Timothy Fitch attended the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) National Counter-Terrorism Seminar, an annual week-long Israeli training camp where US law enforcement executives “study first hand Israel’s tactics and strategies” directly from “senior commanders in the Israel National Police, experts from Israel’s intelligence and security services, and the Israel Defense Forces,” according to the ADL’s website.

      Until Thursday night, the St. Louis County Police Department appeared to be the largest most militarized and brutish force operating in Ferguson. “St. Louis County Police” was scrawled across the side of most of the tactical unit vehicles and appeared on the combat-style uniforms of officers aiming assault rifles at peaceful protesters.

      The ADL boasts of sending more than 175 senior US law enforcement officials from 100 different agencies to the seminar since 2004, which are “taking the lessons they learned in Israel back to the United States."
      The ADL is just one of several pro-Israel groups forging close ties between US cops and Israel’s security and intelligence apparatus.

      Another is the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA), a neoconservative think tank that claims to have hosted some 9,500 law enforcement officials in its Law Enforcement Exchange Program (LEEP) since 2004.

      LEEP “takes delegations of senior law enforcement executives to Israel to study methods and observe techniques used in preventing and reacting to acts of terrorism” and “sponsors conferences within the United States, bringing Israeli experts before much larger groups of law enforcement leaders,” according to JINSA’s brochure..”

      Former St. Louis Police Department police chief Joseph Mokwa is listed as having traveled to Israel as part of a LEEP conference in February 2008.

      Following nationwide outrage and embarrassment, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon pulled St. Louis County Police forces out of Ferguson and placed the Missouri Highway Patrol in charge of policing demonstrators. The St. Louis Police Department voluntarily removed its officers from Ferguson.

      As a result, Ferguson no longer looks like occupied territory, though the underlying issue, Michael Brown’s murder, has yet to be addressed. . .

      Jerusalem woman who left ultra-Orthodox life after her divorce gagged, beaten by group of self-proclaimed 'chastity guards'

      A 31-year-old Jerusalem woman was cruelly beaten and threatened with death by members of the 'modesty squad' who took it upon themselves to interrogate her about her relationships with men, an indictment filed Thursday by the Jerusalem Prosecution reveals.

      According to the indictment, 29-year-old Elhanan Buzaglo and six other men forced their way into the woman's apartment in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Maalot Dafna several months ago. The Prosecution says that the woman once belonged to the ultra-Orthodox community, but abandoned that life after her divorce in 2005.

      After seizing the woman, the men toppled her to the floor, kicked her repeatedly and then gagged her, warning she would be blinded with mace and stabbed if she dare open her eyes. She was then 'interrogated' by Buzaglo and his ilk, as they tried to force her to disclose the identities of men she had been in contact with.

      The group, which also hurled profanities at the woman throughout the ordeal, is also accused of threatening to kill the woman if she did not move from her apartment. . .

      ...Like the Muslim Brotherhood, whose basic assumption is that the first process towards a return to the glory days is cleansing society of non-Islamic elements, the Jewish Brotherhood always claimed that non-Jews ought to be removed from Jewish society. In this, they enjoyed wide support from most of Israeli Jewish society, which was always racist to the bone...This process reached new peaks during the last few years.
      About a year ago, some hitherto unknown group in Safed started demanding employers sign their non-Jewish workers to a pledge to keep the “laws of the Sons of Noah” – i.e. recognize their subservience to Jewish law...Then came Eliyahu’s ruling, forbidding renting apartments to non-Jews, which led to the “Rabbis’ Letter,” signed by 300 Israeli rabbis [ http://www.haaretz.com/blogs/a-special-place-in-hell/we-all-owe-israel-s-racist-rabbis-a-vote-of-thanks-1.330565 ]. Immediately afterward we were hit with the “assimilation” hysteria: The Rabbis Wives’ letter (apparently they’re denied political office, but are allowed carefully-vetted political expression), a ruling by the rabbi of Rosh Ha’Ayin forbidding the employment at Jewish women and Arab men in the same workplace; and the blood libel that Arab witches brew seduction potions, made of rabbits, to be used against Jewish females, particularly Orthodox ones (I sh*t you not)...
      ...It should be noted that Israeli law already fights interfaith marriages...An Israeli Jew wishing to marry a non-Jew is forced to marry abroad.
      And, soon enough, his or her partner won’t be able to work alongside Jews...So, once again – which of the two is nearer power, the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt, or the Israeli Jewish Brotherhood?

      Religious tensions at boiling point in Beitar Illite as 14-year-old girl attacked by member of town's 'modesty guard'

      [EXCERPTS] A 14-year-old girl from Beitar Illite was taken to the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem after an unknown person spilled acid on her face, legs and stomach, causing light burn wounds.  The act has been attributed to a representative of the so-called 'modesty guard' in this town where religious and secular residents are increasingly at bitter odds.
      MDA received the call just before midnight on Wednesday and paramedic Dror Eini who arrived on the scene to treat the girl also managed to calm her down enough so she could explain what had happened.
      Eini told Ynet that “the modesty guards have been threatening her for quite some time.” According to the paramedic the focus of the threats has largely been the victim's 18-year-old sister and some suspect the attacker mistook the younger girl's identity for that of her older sister's. . .
      . . . An ultra-Orthodox teen from Beitar Illite who is in contact with the girl’s family spoke with her sister who described the incident. According to the boy, the attacker stopped the girl and first asked her for directions. Then, after confirming her surname, he spilled a bottle of acid on her. . .

      The victim, Mohammed Mansur, was rushed to Poriah Hospital near Tiberias, where he was treated for injuries sustained all over his body. . .
      . . . The group is suspected of physically assaulting Arab residents of the city, torching cars belonging to Arabs and trying to set fire to their homes. Police said the investigation has been going on for several months. . .

      (excerpt) Last week I came across a disturbing story, one of many recently, where Haredi school boys threw stones at secular Jewish school girls. [Because] [t]he schoolgirls were singing. . .
      . . . [W]hat bothered me more about this particular incident was the age of the perpetrators. These were young boys or teenagers, already well versed on the issues of female singing and its dangers.
      What this incident shows more than anything else, is the education factor and how it will change this country. And it shows how incidents like the one above are going to happen again, and again and again.
      Much has been said on the demographics of the Haredi community and the pace at which it grows. But not many know of how huge an impact Haredi education already has on this state.
      These Haredi rock-throwing boys learn in a Haredi school. . .

      • Seven minors and two young adults, all Jewish and all thought to be residents of West Bank settlements or Jerusalem, were arrested by Jerusalem police. The Orthodox and ultra-Orthodox youths used a 14-year-old girl to lure unsuspecting Arab men to isolated locations in the city where they were beaten by the others. The gang is also suspected of mistakenly beating a South American tourist they mistook for an Arab. (Ha’aretz)...
      • An Israeli-Druze man who served in Israel’s armed forces and his four Israeli-Arab flatmates were forced to flee their home in Tel Aviv after local Jews, egged on by Orthodox and ultra-Orthodox rabbis, vandalized their home and threatened to kill them with a car bomb. (Ynet)
      • Earlier in the week, five Sudanese refugees barely escaped with their lives when their apartment in the southern Israeli city of Ashdod was set on fire, apparently by Jews upset that “infiltrators” were living in their neighborhood. (Ynet) . . .

Moreover, gay Palestinians who have illegally entered Israel have been arrested and promptly deported--returned to the very environments in which their lives were at risk and in which they will now face further danger as they are questioned not only for their sexuality but for their choice to spend time in Israel. . .

      The Israeli Supreme Court Wednesday dismissed various petitions against the Admissions Committees Law, which allows admissions committees in hundreds of communities in Israel to reject housing applicants based on their “social suitability.”

      [EXCERPT] March 8, 2000 marked a unique moment in Israeli history. In a major decision, the Supreme Court of Israel ruled that the town of Katzir, which was established on state land by the Jewish Agency, could not deny the right of the Arab Ka’adan family to live in the town simply on the basis that they were not Jewish. This was the first time that Palestinian citizens of Israel successfully challenged the legality of “Jewish-only” communities in the state, generating cautious optimism that it could set an important precedent for Palestinian rights in land and housing.
      Fifteen years later, on September 17, 2014, these hopes came to an abrupt end. In a 5-4 ruling, the Supreme Court dismissed various petitions filed by human rights groups against the Admissions Committees Law, enacted by the Knesset in 2011. The law allows admissions committees in 434 communities in the Negev and the Galilee (about 43 percent of all towns in Israel) to reject housing applicants based on their “social suitability” and the communities’ “social and cultural fabric.” In effect, these committees are now legally permitted to refuse residency based on any “undesired” identity, including Palestinian, Sephardic, African, gay, religious, secular and others. . .

      ■ AND SEE: "Poisoning Arafat", by Uri Avnery, Counterpuch.org, 7/06/12

      [EXCERPT] Tel Aviv -- For me, there was no surprise. From the very first day, I was convinced that Yasser Arafat had been poisoned by Ariel Sharon. I even wrote about it several times.
      It was a simple logical conclusion.
      First, a thorough medical examination in the French military hospital where he died did not find any cause for his sudden collapse and death. No traces of any life-threatening disease were found.
      The rumors distributed by the Israeli propaganda machine that Arafat had AIDS were blatant lies. They were a continuation of the rumors spread by the same machine that he was gay – all part of the relentless demonization of the Palestinian leader, which went on daily for decades. . .
      . . . Arafat was the man who was able to make peace with Israel, willing to do so, and – more important – to get his people, including the Islamists, to accept it. This would have put an end to the settlement enterprise.
      That’s why he was poisoned.

      . . .While the investigation is ongoing to find the culprits responsible for abducting, killing and burning a Palestinian youth in Jerusalem two days ago, police are not stating if the crime was “nationalistic” or “criminal,” which is code for whether the perpetrator is Israeli or Palestinian. According to the family of Mohammed Abu Khdeir, 17, who was thrown into a vehicle Tuesday around 4:30 am and found dead and brutalized within an hour in a field in the western edge of Jerusalem, the police are looking at relatives. Yet all of Shuafat, the East Jerusalem neighborhood where Abu Khdeir is from, is sure settlers conducted a retaliation murder for the deaths of the three kidnapped Israeli youths Gil-Ad Shaer, Naftali Fraenkel, and Eyal Yifrah.

      “They want the family to get the boys for questioning,” said Walid Abu Khdeir, the deceased’s uncle. “We refused this. If you want them come and capture them,” he continued. Police also released false information that Mohammed was gay, leading Israeli media to pick up the story as a crime of passion from an imagined homophobic family member. [EXCERPT] High school was half a lifetime ago, but actress Scarlett Johansson, 28, still remembers her SAT score.

      The "Don Jon" star sat down for a chat with director Darren Aronofsky for Interview magazine, and the question-and-answer format made her think of that long-ago exam.

      She asked Aronofsky for her SAT score, and the director at first said he didn't remember. But Johansson recalled hers, from her days at New York's Professional Children's School.

      "I think the way it worked when I took them was that they were out of 1,600, so maybe you'd get a 1,240 if you were a smarty-pants," she said. "I got a 1,080, which was pretty low. But that was probably because I didn't answer half of the math questions."

      Aronofsky later confessed he did know his SAT score, which was 1,360. "You suck," said Johansson. "Damn it ... Now I feel like a big dummy with 1,080." . . .

      [EXCEPTS] One ex-Israeli official put it best. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu seems to be "going berserk."
      He is demanding that the United States set a "red line" that, once crossed, will automatically initiate a U.S. attack on Iran. He doesn't even bother to pretend that war with Iran is in U.S. interests. He just wants his war trigger. But he sees the chances for war diminishing every day.
      I think his latest tantrum was produced by last week's New York Times op-ed by its former executive editor, Bill Keller, which stated that even if Iran develops nuclear weapons, they would not necessarily pose a significant threat to Israel, let alone to the United States.
      Keller merely suggested what I have heard Israelis say privately: this whole Iran scare is not about nukes per se, it is about Israel's fear of losing the ability to do whatever it wants to, whenever it wants to. Bomb Gaza. Bomb Lebanon. Bomb Gaza relief ships. Bomb whoever, whenever.
      It is about regional hegemony.
      After all, militarily Israel can more than handle Iran and both countries know that. That is why Israelis do not share Netanyahu's enthusiasm for war. . .

      Lillian, who worked as housekeep for prime minister's wife for six year, files claim with Tel Aviv Regional Labor Court accusing Netanyahu of abuse, underpayment, forced labor on Shabbat.

      [EXCERPT] "Sara Netanyahu abused me, paid me less than minimum wage, didn't pay my social benefits, forced me to work Saturdays even though I observe Shabbat, and forced me to call her 'Mrs. Sara Netanyahu'," these are just some of the allegations Lillian, a former housekeeper for the Netanyahu family in their Caesarea residence, made against the prime minister's wife.
      In a claim filed with the Tel Aviv Regional Labor Court by her lawyers Asaf Sharaf and Shai Lavi, Lillian recounts her version of experiences during her six years working for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wife.
      According to the claim: "The relationship (with Sara Netanyahu) constantly came with a line of humiliation and a hostile atmosphere both at work and outside of work. For example, after Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu was elected prime minister, Lillian was not allowed to call the defendant by her first name, but was to call her, 'Mrs. Sara Netanyahu'.
      "And if she was to make an innocent mistake, out of belief that this was a personal relationship, Netanyahu would shout at her for daring to call her by her first name since, 'I am a person of authority, and every one of my household staff must respect me and call me by my title, Mrs. Sara Netanyahu.'"
      The claim continues to say that "Sara Netanyahu would adorn herself in her feathers and shout aloud: 'This is my beautiful house, and I am the mother of the State of Israel'." . . .

      [EXCERPTS] . . . All nationalists have the power of not seeing resemblances between similar sets of facts. A British Tory will defend self-determination in Europe and oppose it in India with no feeling of inconsistency. Actions are held to be good or bad, not on their own merits, but according to who does them, and there is almost no kind of outrage — torture, the use of hostages, forced labour, mass deportations, imprisonment without trial, forgery, assassination, the bombing of civilians — which does not change its moral colour when it is committed by ‘our’ side. . .

      . . . The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, but he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them. For quite six years the English admirers of Hitler contrived not to learn of the existence of Dachau and Buchenwald. And those who are loudest in denouncing the German concentration camps are often quite unaware, or only very dimly aware, that there are also concentration camps in Russia. Huge events like the Ukraine famine of 1933, involving the deaths of millions of people, have actually escaped the attention of the majority of English russophiles. Many English people have heard almost nothing about the extermination of German and Polish Jews during the present war. Their own antisemitism has caused this vast crime to bounce off their consciousness. In nationalist thought there are facts which are both true and untrue, known and unknown. A known fact may be so unbearable that it is habitually pushed aside and not allowed to enter into logical processes, or on the other hand it may enter into every calculation and yet never be admitted as a fact, even in one’s own mind. . .

      Is Israel a "Jewish Nation"? Is the US an "American Nation"? ~ by Ira Chernus, CommonDreams.org, 1/31/14

      [EXCERPT] . . . All countries define themselves, Hind Khoury, a former Palestinian minister and ambassador, told Rudoren. “Why doesn’t Israel call itself at the U.N. whatever they want to call it — the Jewish whatever, Maccabean, whatever they want. Then the whole world will recognize it.” But, Khoury added, “We will never recognize Israel the way they want, I mean genuinely, from our hearts. ... Why for them to feel secure do we have to deny our most recent history?”
      "For them to feel secure" -- There's the heart of the matter, as Americans should easily understand. Israeli Jews, like white Americans, have always known that their claim to the land they call their own is dubious.
      Ever since the first Europeans arrived in what would become the United States, they have paraded an endless array of papers, all claiming to be treaties signed by native peoples ceding their lands to the conquerors.
      "You see, we have a right to this land," the whites proudly proclaimed. Never mind that most of the treaties were either coerced, signed by native peoples who did not understand them, or outright fraudulent. They gave at least the appearance of legal right.
      Israel has a somewhat stronger case with UN Resolution 181, passed in 1947, providing for "independent Arab and Jewish States" in Palestine. But the right of the Jews to have their own state in Palestine has still remained a matter of contention (pardon the understatement) ever since.
      Why did so many white Americans find it so important to be able to waive those pieces of paper "proving" their "legal right" to the land? Why do a sizeable majority of Israeli Jews favor the demand that Palestinians acknowledge Israel as "the nation-state of the Jewish people"? Obviously, both peoples are insecure about their right to their land. If they can get the former inhabitants to relinquish their rights, it gives the appearance, at least, that the vanquished concede to the victors a moral right to the land they have taken. . .

      TAKE IT AWAY, NORM: "Ideological Rigorism in America; The Response to ISIS", by Norman Pollack, CounterPunch.org, October 3-5, 2014

      [EXCERPT] Perhaps rigor mortis is better, not merely rigidity in principle and/or practice, but rigidity of the whole entity setting in after death (in this case, rather, DECLINE as a vital civilization). ISIS, the specific subclass of terrorism on the current agenda (even seeming to displace Russia and China) as threatening America, Democracy, and the Free World, has been raised to the status of the universal anti-Christ, malevolence incarnate, and fueling America’s comeback to unilateral world dominance, a position from which it had been falling through the changing structure of international power. ISIS is like a life raft America reaches for in the multipolar world circumventing its customary position of unilateral political-economic-military dominance. In that light, it serves the function that communism did (and perhaps emotively still does) a half-century ago: the Hated Object to rationalize, legitimate, prosecute a course of global intervention, eradication of which is essential to national identity and survival.

      America is Edisonian: we invent things, but not necessarily what Thomas Alva had in mind. We invent that which will accomplish three goals, preferably simultaneously: Unify the nation (especially in the face of real or imagined class division); activate a huge military establishment (which translates into periodic if not continuous war and intervention); succor a capitalistic system (which might otherwise be at increasing risk of structural breakdown) prone, by its chicanery and misallocation of priorities, to an endemic condition of underconsumption exacerbated by a shriveling social safety net). Normality is a curse, unless, as now happens, the normality of war. Instead, constant jolts of fear keep the State and Capitalism going—but more, keep them growing closer, each reinforcing, and creating the need for, unity, mutual protection, ever-expanding aggressiveness.

      Welcome aboard, ISIS; if you didn’t exist, we’d be forced to invent you. Here, let the reasoning of Jean-Paul Sartre be our guide. I wrote an article in Agricultural History a half-century ago, “Fear of Man: Populism, Authoritarianism, and the Historian,” which strangely resonates with the present moment, testifying precisely to the ideological rigorism of today, called then by the term, “consensus,” a societal phenomenon whose purpose was to deny social protest past and current in favor of a grand celebration of Exceptionalism. Populism was in a sense our ISIS, as Cold War hysteria and historians’ opportunism to get on the bandwagon, in the 1950s-60s, magnified fears, induced conformity, and bludgeoned dissent. A shabby record in a still shabbier times.

      Sartre’s “Portrait of the Anti-Semite” uncovers the psychodynamics of authoritarianism, specifically, the fashioning of a scapegoat to hide one’s own (and here, society’s own) hidden fears and tenacious clinging to the status quo. For Sartre, the anti-Semite hates everything but the Jew: “He is a man who is afraid. Not of the Jews of course, but of himself, of his conscience, his freedom, of his instincts, of his responsibilities, of solitude, of change, of society and the world; of everything except the Jews.” My own, 1965: “This too captures the significance of our own attack on the Populist movement as an escape from ourselves and the challenges of our age.” In our discussion, remember ISIS as a possible functional equivalent, summoning the same psychodynamics in response to challenge, as Populism had been many years ago.

      In a preceding passage I wrote: “It is difficult to escape the conclusion that the critics of Populism and the society which finds the charges [anti-Semitism, xenophobia, premodernism] so congenial to its temperament exhibit the very traits of authoritarianism they impute to others…. Thus, Populism becomes for the historian and the larger society what the Jew is for the anti-Semite. Both historian and anti-Semite require a scapegoat, and the character of that scapegoat is incidental. For each hates not Populists or Jews but himself. Each cannot affirm man, each has little faith in human potentiality or confidence in man’s ability to shape the future and rationally control society, each cannot confront the possibilities of self-fulfillment in humanity—and frightened by these thoughts, each turns blindly to dependence on the homogeneous folk or the static past. In the final analysis, the denigration of Populism signifies the fear of man.”

      ISIS is our scapegoat, as, under the capacious tent of counterterrorism and defense of the homeland, other groups have preceded and no doubt will follow it. ISIS keeps the hairpin trigger of militarism and echoing patriotism on steady alert–surveillance, war, intervention, increasingly blind submission to the framework of power, in sum, ruling-groups’ idealization of what America is and must continue to be, as the natural fruit of an American society giving tacit admission to its own failure by its strident expression of hegemonic declaration and ideological rigidity. Again Sartre, in what I said “reaches to the innermost recesses of the authoritarian mind”—on reflection 49 years later appears to me the uncanny exactitude of anticipatory vision which best delineates America today: “Anti-Semitism, in a word, is fear of man’s fate. The anti-Semite is the man who wants to be a pitiless stone, furious torrent, devastating lightning: in short, everything but a man.”

      That, I submit, is the American mentalset, a nation craving, as Sartre says elsewhere, the durability of stone: a face of hardness to the world, fearful of introspection, of ever stopping to inspect the record of shock-and-awe intervention, paramilitary-sourced regime change, never-ceasing weapons development, stockpiling, and modernization of existing stock, and, twin of this psychological closed system, hubris and the boastful claims of divinely-ordered superiority. ISIS must be accorded spontaneous creation to cover America’s tracks as to the fundamental takeover of the Middle East, which included the invasion of Iraq leading ultimately to ISIS’s formation and growth; hence as its parent in having responsibility for the ensuing turmoil. But it also must be accorded world-shaking proportions to justify the continued permanent state of emergency, bombing Syria and turning ISIS itself (now that Ukraine is losing its luster) into the front-line ranks of the Wider Threat, these being the latest manifestation of US power. A not-so-subtle linkage has been created with Russia and China, as well as the argument laid for ISIS’s own ultimate threat of encroachment on American soil. . .

    • RE: "Jewish New Yorkers to Schumer and Gillibrand: Enact the Leahy Law and stop US military aid to Israel"

      MY COMMENT: I just edited this letter and emailed it to both of Georgia's chickenhawk senators using the FCNL site. It took all of two minutes!

      Dear Senator ______,

      I write to ask that you take action to enforce provisions of federal law that require the termination of aid to any unit of a foreign military for which there is credible information that the unit has committed a gross violation of human rights. During the recent Israeli operations in Gaza, world leaders, human rights organizations, and journalists have all described actions by units of the Israeli military that would constitute gross violations of human rights. Accordingly, we ask you, as our Senators, to first, initiate Senate hearings that will investigate these reports of human rights violations, and, second, if the hearings demonstrate that U.S. is supporting those units, to seek implementation of the provisions of federal law that provide for termination of that aid.

      As for the applicable law, it begins with this unequivocal declaration:
“[A] principal goal of the foreign policy of the United States,” according to the Foreign Assistance Act, “shall be to promote the increased observance of internationally recognized human rights by all countries.” Eventually, to give practical effect to that declaration, the Act was amended by the “Leahy Law,” which forbids assistance to “any unit of the security forces of a foreign country if the Secretary of State has credible information that such unit has committed gross violations of human rights.”

      I believe that there is undeniably credible evidence that military units of the Israel Defense Force committed gross human rights violations during their military operations in Gaza from July 7 to July 29. According to the UN, during that time, Israel killed more than 2,100 Palestinians, of whom at least 1,400 were civilians and some 500 were children. Approximately 108,000 were left homeless; 133 schools and 23 health facilities were also damaged. Israel struck the Gaza Strip’s sole power plant and its water supply system, limiting the access of hundreds of thousands of residents to electricity and clean water.

      One operation, in particular, drew international attention. On July 20, Israeli military units attacked the residential neighborhood of Shejaiya in Gaza City, killing at least 17 children. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called Israel’s attack on Shejaiya “atrocious.” Ten Israeli human rights organizations expressed “serious concern” about “the potential violation of the fundamental principles of the laws of war, specifically the principle of distinguishing between combatants and civilians.”

      The extraordinary number of civilian deaths throughout the Gaza operation lends credible support to the concern expressed by the Israeli human rights organizations. In addition to the large number of attacks on Gaza’s infrastructure and to vital aspects of its economy, there is a credible basis for the charge made by many impartial observers that units of the IDF engaged in that most serious of human rights violations, namely, collective punishment. Adding credibility to that charge is a 2010 report of the International Committee of the Red Cross, which said that, by punishing the Gazan population “for acts for which they bear no responsibility,” Israel has engaged in “collective punishment imposed in clear violation of [its] obligations under international humanitarian law.”

      World leaders spoke harshly of the actions taken by units of the IDF in Gaza. UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon called the attack on Shejaiya “atrocious,” said an attack on a school being used as a UN shelter a “criminal act and a moral outrage” and a “gross violation of human rights,” and warned, in general, that Israeli attacks on Gaza raised “serious questions about proportionality.” Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff, when asked about the IDF operation in Gaza, said, “I think it’s a massacre.”

      You might say that all of these characterizations of Israeli conduct in Gaza are contested. Israel has said that the devastation it inflicted on the people of Gaza was justified by military necessity. However, two of the world’s most respected independent human rights agencies, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, have investigated numerous locations where human rights violations were charged and found little evidence of military justification for the indiscriminate loss of life and property damage in those places.

      All that is to say that there is credible information that U.S. foreign assistance is going to military units of the IDF that have been implicated in gross violations of human rights. The Leahy Law is unequivocal: The Secretary of State must insure that no assistance shall go to such units.

      By enacting the Leahy Law, Congress sought to insure that American dollars do not promote human rights violations. The Secretary of State has failed to act. It is, therefore, up to the Congress to do whatever possible to insure that the law is obeyed. I urge you to call for prompt Senate hearings to investigate this matter.

    • RE: "Gutsy young Eritrean guy (left) casually walks up to former Knesset member Michael Ben Ari, gets chased out of park" ~ tweeted by Simone Wilson, the Jewish Journal‘s foreign correspondent in Israel

      REGARDING BEN-ARI, SEE: "Why the Israeli Elections Were a Victory for the Right", by Max Blumenthal, TheNation.com, January 23, 2013
      • The polls were a rebuke to Netanyahu, and the “centrist” Yesh Atid did very well. But far-right extremists are steadily gaining strength.

      [EXCERPT] . . . A bearded settler named Michael Ben-Ari has been at the forefront of virtually every right-wing march in the Tel Aviv area. In 2009, Ben-Ari won a seat in the Knesset by campaigning as a disciple of Rabbi Meir Kahane, the murdered founder of the violent extremist group Kach, who advocated the establishment of a theocratic fascist state in the West Bank and the forced “transfer” of Palestinians to Jordan.

      In 2010, I met Ben-Ari in his Knesset office with my colleague, David Sheen. Seated at a desk flanked by a framed portrait of Kahane, Ben-Ari launched into a bizarre diatribe that seemed more extreme than anything I had ever heard from a member of Israel’s radical right. “I would never allow these words to leave my lips: Jordan is Palestine,” he told us. “God forbid! Jordan is part of the land of Israel, it belongs to the people of Israel. It’s not Palestine, it was never Palestine.”

      Ahead of the current election cycle, Ben-Ari founded a new party, Otzma LeYisrael, or Strong Israel, joining forces with Aryeh Eldad, a virulently anti-Arab Knesset member who has vowed to “end the Muslim occupation of Judea and Samaria” (biblical names for the West Bank) by enacting an annexation program remarkably similar to the kind promoted by Bennett.

      Though Strong Israel banners decorated the highways beneath the ideological settlements of the northern West Bank—“Let The IDF Kick Ass,” one read—Ben-Ari focused his campaign primarily inside the Green Line. His party office was strategically located on a busy street in south Tel Aviv, in a neighborhood inhabited by thousands of asylum seekers from Africa, and where tensions exploded last year with a series of race riots that he had no small part in inciting. On New Year’s Eve 2013, Ben-Ari headlined a protest against the presence of non-Jewish Africans in Tel Aviv that doubled as a rally for his newly founded party.

      After the demonstration, Sheen and I followed closely behind a group of Strong Israel supporters as they marched through the neighborhood, chanting “Sudanese to Sudan!” and hectoring every African they met along the way (watch video of the incident here). “Criminals! Sudanese, go home, you whores!” they shouted at a pregnant African woman huddled inside a corner market. By the time the marchers reached Strong Israel’s campaign headquarters, the small police detail that had been following them, and that restrained them from physical violence, had disappeared. That’s when they began to attack Sheen, slapping him and threatening to break his camera. The tactics that settlers employed to intimidate human rights activists and journalists documenting their abuses in the occupied Hebron Hills had finally found their way into the streets of Tel Aviv.

      Ben-Ari has boasted that the once-radical ideas introduced by his mentor, Kahane, now influence the mainstream of Israeli politics. “I’m not the only one who represents Kahane,” he has said. “He’s represented by a great many people today, within the Knesset and outside it.”

      But Ben-Ari might be a victim of his own success. His party did not cross the electoral threshold, meaning he will not retain his seat in the Knesset. However, the next government will be filled with fanatics who have co-opted his language and political agenda. They include Miri Regev, a notoriously unhinged former spokesperson for the Israeli army now emerging as one of Likud’s rising stars, who called non-Jewish Africans “a cancer in the nation’s body” during an anti-migrant rally in south Tel Aviv. Moshe Feiglin, a settler banned from entering Britain for inciting racial hatred, has also earned a seat in the Knesset on the Likud list. Recent polls of Jewish Israeli attitudes have exposed a disturbing consensus in favor of the far right’s politics of ethnic resentment. In a poll taken last year, 52 percent of Israeli Jews agreed with Regev that African asylum seekers are “a cancer,” and a full one-third said they support violent attacks on them. Then there are fresh-faced fanatics like Jewish Home’s Jeremy Gimpel, who ran for the Knesset with an apparent determination to summon the spirit of Kahane. . .

      Nurit Peled-Elhanan of Hebrew University says textbooks depict Palestinians as "terrorists, refugees and primitive farmers"

      [EXCERPT] Nurit Peled-Elhanan, an Israeli academic, mother and political radical, summons up an image of rows of Jewish schoolchildren, bent over their books, learning about their neighbours, the Palestinians. But, she says, they are never referred to as Palestinians unless the context is terrorism.
      They are called Arabs. "The Arab with a camel, in an Ali Baba dress. They describe them as vile and deviant and criminal, people who don't pay taxes, people who live off the state, people who don't want to develop," she says. "The only representation is as refugees, primitive farmers and terrorists. You never see a Palestinian child or doctor or teacher or engineer or modern farmer."
      Peled-Elhanan, a professor of language and education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, has studied the content of Israeli school books for the past five years, and her account, "Palestine in Israeli School Books: Ideology and Propaganda in Education", is to be published in the UK this month. She describes what she found as racism– but, more than that, a racism that prepares young Israelis for their compulsory military service. . .

      ■ MY SECOND COMMENT: The Likudnik government of Israel (along with the right-wing U.S. casino mogul Sheldon Adelson) also has a high-degree of control over Israel's media.

      ● URI AVNERY ON THE SORRY STATE OF THE ISRAELI MEDIA/PRESS, AND HOW THE ISRAELIS HAVE BEEN "BRAINWASHED":
      “Israel’s Weird Elections”, by Uri Avnery, Counterpunch, 1/04/13:

      [EXCERPTS] . . . The Israeli media are already to a large extent neutralized, a creeping process not unsimilar to what the Germans used to call Gleichschaltung. [SEE: Gleichschaltung @ Wikipedia - J.L.D. ]
      All three TV channels are more or less bankrupt and dependent on government handouts. Their editors are practically government appointees. The printed press is also teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, except the largest “news” paper, which belongs to Sheldon Adelson and is a Netanyahu propaganda sheet, distributed gratis.
      [Naftali] Bennett repeats the ridiculous assertion that almost all journalists are left-wingers (meaning traitors.) He promises to put an end to this intolerable situation. . .
      . . . In the coming four years, the official annexation of the West Bank to Israel may become a fact. . .
      . . . If the government continues on its present course, this will lead to certain disaster – the entire country between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River will become one unit under Israeli rule. This Greater Israel will contain an Arab majority and a shrinking Jewish minority, turning it inevitably into an apartheid state, plagued by a permanent civil war and shunned by the world.
      If pressure from without and within eventually compels the government to grant civil rights to the Arab majority, the country will turn into an Arab state. 134 years of Zionist endeavor will come to naught, a repetition of the Crusaders’ kingdom.
      This is so obvious, so inevitable, that one needs an iron will not to think about it. It seems that all major parties in these elections have this will. Speaking about peace, they believe, is poison. Giving back the West Bank and East Jerusalem for peace? God forbid even thinking about it.
      The weird fact is that this week two respected polls – independent of each other – came to the same conclusion: the great majority of Israeli voters favors the “two-state solution”
      , the creation of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders and the partition of Jerusalem. This majority includes the majority of Likud voters, and even about half of Bennett’s adherents.
      How come? The explanation lies in the next question: How many voters believe that this solution is possible? The answer: almost nobody. Over dozens of years, Israelis have been brainwashed into believing that “the Arabs” don’t want peace. If they say they do, they are lying.
      If peace is impossible, why think about it? Why even mention it in the election campaign? Why not go back 44 years to Golda Meir’s days and pretend that the Palestinians don’t exist? (“There is no such thing as a Palestinian people…It is not as though there was a Palestinian people and we came and threw them out and took their country away. They did not exist.” – Golda Meir, June 13, 1969) . . .

      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      ■ MY THIRD COMMENT: The Likudnik government of Israel is also working to further separate/segregate Palestinians from Jewish Israelis (and now even Christian Palestinians). As Jonathan Cook rercently put it: "Successive Israeli governments have carefully engineered the structure of Israeli society to ensure that Jewish and Palestinian citizens, the latter comprising a fifth of the population, are kept in separate linguistic, cultural, educational and emotional worlds... Today most Israeli Jews rarely meet a Palestinian, and especially not one from the West Bank or Gaza."
      ● FOR THE IMPLICATIONS OF THIS SEPARATION/SEGREGATION, SEE: "Rich People Just Care Less", By Daniel Goleman, N.Y. Times, 10/05/13
      [EXCERPT] . . . In politics, readily dismissing inconvenient people can easily extend to dismissing inconvenient truths about them. The insistence by some House Republicans in Congress on cutting financing for food stamps and impeding the implementation of Obamacare, which would allow patients, including those with pre-existing health conditions, to obtain and pay for insurance coverage, may stem in part from the empathy gap. As political scientists have noted, redistricting and gerrymandering have led to the creation of more and more safe districts, in which elected officials don’t even have to encounter many voters from the rival party, much less empathize with them.
      Social distance makes it all the easier to focus on small differences between groups and to put a negative spin on the ways of others and a positive spin on our own.
      Freud called this “the narcissism of minor differences,” a theme repeated by Vamik D. Volkan, an emeritus professor of psychiatry at the University of Virginia, who was born in Cyprus to Turkish parents. Dr. Volkan remembers hearing as a small boy awful things about the hated Greek Cypriots — who, he points out, actually share many similarities with Turkish Cypriots. Yet for decades their modest-size island has been politically divided, which exacerbates the problem by letting prejudicial myths flourish.
      In contrast, extensive interpersonal contact counteracts biases by letting people from hostile groups get to know one another as individuals and even friends.
      Thomas F. Pettigrew, a research professor of social psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, analyzed more than 500 studies on intergroup contact. Mr. Pettigrew, who was born in Virginia in 1931 and lived there until going to Harvard for graduate school, told me in an e-mail that it was the “the rampant racism in the Virginia of my childhood” that led him to study prejudice.
      In his research, he found that even in areas where ethnic groups were in conflict and viewed one another through lenses of negative stereotypes, individuals who had close friends within the other group exhibited little or no such prejudice. They seemed to realize the many ways those demonized “others” were “just like me.” . . .
    • P.S. FROM JOEL KOVEL, 1-20-13:
      [EXCERPT] . . . As with everyone I know of in official political culture, [Thomas] Friedman [probably like your typical Israeli business leader - J.L.D.] assumes that Israel is a rational actor on the international stage who will obey the calculus of reward and punishment that regulates the conduct of normal states.
      The presumption is that if you tell it the truth, and even pull back US support, it will get the message, reflect, and change its ways. But Israel is not a normal state, except superficially. It will make adjustments, pulling back here, co-operating there, making nice when necessary, crafting its message using a powerful propaganda apparatus employing the most up-to-date social science. But this is simply tactical and no more predicts or explains the behavior of the Zionist state than an individual sociopath can be explained by the fact that he obeys traffic signals while driving to the scene of his crime. . .
      [EXCERPTS]
      The patient, by the name of Israel, walks into the room and instantly bursts into a tirade of arguments conclusively proving his credentials, and says that he is better than everyone else.
      - Ofer Grosbard, "Israel On The Couch: The Psychology of the Peace Process"
      The problem Americans have with Israel is that the region it exists in is in the midst of a major political sea change, while Israel is frozen in time and holding on to its militarist, right-wing policies of extending settlements in the West Bank. It’s a policy that harks back to the ideas of the British-trained militarist Ze’ev Jabotinsky’s Iron Wall [now augmented by the US-funded "Iron Dome" - J.L.D.], - See more at: http://mondoweiss.net/2014/09/military-demolishes-benefitting/comment-page-1#comment-709255, which is based on the idea a live-and-let-live policy between Jews and Arabs is impossible and, thus, Jews must militarily control and repress Palestinians . . .
      . . . How does a people turn back a racially-oriented demonization program with roots that extend back many decades? How do you ratchet down a nation’s narcissism so people are able to simply see the other as a human being? . . .
      . . . On our part, Americans and the United States need to stop being a permissive yes-man and begin to show Israel some tough love. We need more US criticism of Israel. No doubt this approach will be received with gales of cynical laughter from hardliners … but so what?
      In my mind, the Israeli narcissistic and arrogant mindset would benefit from a little Buddhist detachment, more of the posture that sees the world not of separate individual selves and egos but of human beings as part of a larger flow of life. The Buddhists call the self-obsessed, separatist state-of-mind [i.e. the "pale" of Israel surrounded by Ze’ev Jabotinsky’s Iron Wall augmented by the US-funded "Iron Dome" - J.L.D.] that Israel thrives on and defends with weapons as “the illusory self.”
      “Once one identifies with a permanent self-concept, the pride and craving adhering to this become the pivot from which an egocentric world arises,” writes Gay Watson, a psychotherapist attuned to Buddhism.
      David Loy puts it this way: “To become completely groundless is also to become completely grounded, not in some particular, but in the whole network of interdependent relations that constitute the world.”
      I’m not suggesting Israel become a Buddhist nation. The point is for Israelis, and more important Americans, to figure a way out of the worsening condition of “us versus them” to avoid the need to obliterate them and set off a war that no one really wants. The point is to re-shape our minds to make “the other” less threatening to permit talking.
      I’m not holding my breath that Benjamin Netanyahu and Avigdor Lieberman are going to become peace activists.
      But I’m done as an American being a silent stooge while Israeli militarist madness fuels hatred and sets the stage for war.
      [EXCERPT] . . . It is an extraordinary fact that no fewer than thirty-three distinct organizations - including AIPAC, the Zionist Organization of America, the American Jewish Congress, and the Jewish National Fund - are gathered together today as members or affiliates of the Israel on Campus Coalition. The coalition is an overwhelmingly powerful presence on American college campuses for which there is simply no equivalent on the Palestinian or Arab side. Its self-proclaimed mission is not merely to monitor our colleges and universities. That, after all, is the commitment of Campus Watch, which was started by pro-Israel activists in 2002. It is, rather (and in its own words), to generate “a pro-active, pro-Israel agenda on campus.”
      There is, accordingly, disproportionate and unbalanced intervention on campuses across the country by a coalition of well-funded organizations, who have no time for — and even less interest in — the niceties of intellectual exchange and academic process. Insinuation, accusation, and defamation have become the weapons of first resort to respond to argument and criticism directed at Israeli policies. As far as these outside pressure groups (and their campus representatives) are concerned, the intellectual and academic price that the scholarly community pays as a result of this kind of intervention amounts to little more than collateral damage. . .
      • “If there be time to expose through discussion the falsehood and fallacies, to avert the evil by the process of education, the remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence.” ~ Whitney v. California, 1927
      • “No danger flowing from speech can be deemed clear and present unless the incidence of the evil apprehended is so imminent that it may befall before there is an opportunity for full discussion. Only an emergency can justify repression.”
      • “Fear of serious injury cannot alone justify suppression of free speech and assembly. Men feared witches and burned women. It is the function of speech to free men from the bondage of irrational fears.”
      • “The constitutional right of free speech has been declared to be the same in peace and war. In peace, too, men may differ widely as to what loyalty to our country demands, and an intolerant majority, swayed by passion or by fear, may be prone in the future, as it has been in the past, to stamp as disloyal opinions with which it disagrees.”
      [EXCERPTS]
      The patient, by the name of Israel, walks into the room and instantly bursts into a tirade of arguments conclusively proving his credentials, and says that he is better than everyone else.
      - Ofer Grosbard, "Israel On The Couch: The Psychology of the Peace Process"
      The problem Americans have with Israel is that the region it exists in is in the midst of a major political sea change, while Israel is frozen in time and holding on to its militarist, right-wing policies of extending settlements in the West Bank. It’s a policy that harks back to the ideas of the British-trained militarist Ze’ev Jabotinsky’s Iron Wall [now augmented by the US-funded "Iron Dome" - J.L.D.], - See more at: http://mondoweiss.net/2014/09/military-demolishes-benefitting/comment-page-1#comment-709255, which is based on the idea a live-and-let-live policy between Jews and Arabs is impossible and, thus, Jews must militarily control and repress Palestinians . . .
      . . . How does a people turn back a racially-oriented demonization program with roots that extend back many decades? How do you ratchet down a nation’s narcissism so people are able to simply see the other as a human being? . . .
      . . . On our part, Americans and the United States need to stop being a permissive yes-man and begin to show Israel some tough love. We need more US criticism of Israel. No doubt this approach will be received with gales of cynical laughter from hardliners … but so what?
      In my mind, the Israeli narcissistic and arrogant mindset would benefit from a little Buddhist detachment, more of the posture that sees the world not of separate individual selves and egos but of human beings as part of a larger flow of life. The Buddhists call the self-obsessed, separatist state-of-mind [i.e. the "pale" of Israel surrounded by Ze’ev Jabotinsky’s Iron Wall augmented by the US-funded "Iron Dome" - J.L.D.] that Israel thrives on and defends with weapons as “the illusory self.”
      “Once one identifies with a permanent self-concept, the pride and craving adhering to this become the pivot from which an egocentric world arises,” writes Gay Watson, a psychotherapist attuned to Buddhism.
      David Loy puts it this way: “To become completely groundless is also to become completely grounded, not in some particular, but in the whole network of interdependent relations that constitute the world.”
      I’m not suggesting Israel become a Buddhist nation. The point is for Israelis, and more important Americans, to figure a way out of the worsening condition of “us versus them” to avoid the need to obliterate them and set off a war that no one really wants. The point is to re-shape our minds to make “the other” less threatening to permit talking.
      I’m not holding my breath that Benjamin Netanyahu and Avigdor Lieberman are going to become peace activists.
      But I’m done as an American being a silent stooge while Israeli militarist madness fuels hatred and sets the stage for war.
Netanyahu thought the fact that his government did this in Hebrew somehow made it invisible– 'exactly the duplicity' he accuses Palestinians of." ~ Weiss
      FROM JOEL KOVEL, 1-20-13:
      . . . As with everyone I know of in official political culture, [Thomas] Friedman [probably like Obama - J.L.D.] assumes that Israel is a rational actor on the international stage who will obey the calculus of reward and punishment that regulates the conduct of normal states.
      The presumption is that if you tell it the truth, and even pull back US support, it will get the message, reflect, and change its ways. But Israel is not a normal state, except superficially. It will make adjustments, pulling back here, co-operating there, making nice when necessary, crafting its message using a powerful propaganda apparatus employing the most up-to-date social science. But this is simply tactical and no more predicts or explains the behavior of the Zionist state than an individual sociopath can be explained by the fact that he obeys traffic signals while driving to the scene of his crime. . .
      [EXCERPT] Then news broke that the Israeli government, with Netanayahu’s okay, had approved a massive settlement expansion in Givat Hamatos in East Jerusalem. Some timing! The settlement is the first Israel has announced since last April, and recalls Israel’s announcement of settlements in 2010 as VP Joe Biden was meeting with Netanyahu. “Just in time for the Bibi-Obama meeting,” AP’s Matt Lee wrote. The decision will create 2610 new settlement units and many analysts say it could mark the end of the two-state solution. . . The U.S. government was quick to respond with a relatively harsh condemnation. State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters during an afternoon briefing:
      We are deeply concerned by reports that the Israeli Government has moved forward the planning process in the sensitive area of Givat Hamatos in East Jerusalem. This step is contrary to Israel’s stated goal of negotiating a permanent status agreement with the Palestinians, and it would send a very troubling message if they proceed with tenders or construction. This development will only draw condemnation from the international community, distance Israel from even its closest allies; poison the atmosphere not only with the Palestinians, but also with the very Arab governments with which Prime Minister Netanyahu said he wanted to build relations; and call into question Israel’s ultimate commitment to a peaceful negotiated settlement with the Palestinians.
      [EXCERPT] One ex-Israeli official put it best. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu seems to be "going berserk."
      He is demanding that the United States set a "red line" that, once crossed, will automatically initiate a U.S. attack on Iran. He doesn't even bother to pretend that war with Iran is in U.S. interests. He just wants his war trigger. But he sees the chances for war diminishing every day.
      I think his latest tantrum was produced by last week's New York Times op-ed by its former executive editor, Bill Keller, which stated that even if Iran develops nuclear weapons, they would not necessarily pose a significant threat to Israel, let alone to the United States.
      Keller merely suggested what I have heard Israelis say privately: this whole Iran scare is not about nukes per se, it is about Israel's fear of losing the ability to do whatever it wants to, whenever it wants to. Bomb Gaza. Bomb Lebanon. Bomb Gaza relief ships. Bomb whoever, whenever.
      It is about regional hegemony. After all, militarily Israel can more than handle Iran and both countries know that. That is why Israelis do not share Netanyahu's enthusiasm for war. . .
    • P.S. According to the German "theorist" Wilhelm Marr (1819-1904) the struggle between Jews and Germans would only be resolved by the victory of one and the ultimate death of the other. A Jewish victory, he concluded, would result in finis Germaniae (the end of the German people).*
      In other words, to Wilhelm Marr's "way of thinking", "the Jews" were an "existential threat" to the German people (the German "Volk")! ! !
      * FROM "THE COORDINATION FORUM FOR COUNTERING ANTISEMITISM" IN ISRAEL (antisemitism.org.il):
      [EXCERPT] Wilhelm Marr (1819-1904) was a German agitator and theorist, who coined the term "antisemitism" as a euphemism for the German Judenhass, or "Jew-hate".
      Marr was an unemployed journalist, who claimed that he had lost his job due to Jewish interference. A political conservative, he was influenced by the conservative pan-German movement, as expounded by Johann Gottfried von Herder, who developed the idea of the Volk, and the Burschenschaft movement of the early nineteenth century, which developed out of frustration among German students with the failure of the Congress of Vienna to create a unified state out of all the territories inhabited by the Volk. The latter rejected the participation of Jewish and other non-German minorities as members, "unless they prove that they are anxious to develop within themselves a Christian-German spirit" (a decision of the "Burschenschaft Congress of 1818"). While they were opposed to the participation of Jews in their movement, like Heinrich von Treitschke later, they did allow for the possibility of the Jewish (and other) minorities participating in the German state if they were to abandon all signs of ethnic and religious distinctiveness and assimilate completely into German Volk.
      Marr took these philosophies one step further by rejecting the premise of assimilation as a means for Jews to become Germans. In his pamphlet Der Weg zum Siege des Germanentums über das Judentum (The Way to Victory of Germanicism over Judaism, 1879) he introduced the idea that Germans and Jews were locked in a longstanding conflict, the origins of which he attributed to race — and that the Jews were winning. He argued that Jewish emancipation resulting from German liberalism had allowed the Jews to control German finance and industry. Furthermore, since this conflict was based on the different qualities of the Jewish and German races, it could not be resolved even by the total assimilation of the Jewish population. According to him, the struggle between Jews and Germans would only be resolved by the victory of one and the ultimate death of the other. A Jewish victory, he concluded, would result in finis Germaniae (the end of the German people). To prevent this from happening, in 1879 Marr founded the League of Antisemites (Antisemiten-Liga), the first German organization committed specifically to combatting the alleged threat to Germany posed by the Jews and advocating their forced removal from the country. . .
      URI AVNERY ON THE SORRY STATE OF THE ISRAELI MEDIA/PRESS, AND HOW THE ISRAELIS HAVE BEEN "BRAINWASHED":
      “Israel’s Weird Elections”, by Uri Avnery, Counterpunch, 1/04/13:
      [EXCERPTS] . . . The Israeli media are already to a large extent neutralized, a creeping process not unsimilar to what the Germans used to call Gleichschaltung. [SEE: Gleichschaltung @ Wikipedia - J.L.D. ]
      All three TV channels are more or less bankrupt and dependent on government handouts. Their editors are practically government appointees. The printed press is also teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, except the largest “news” paper, which belongs to Sheldon Adelson and is a Netanyahu propaganda sheet, distributed gratis.
      [Naftali] Bennett repeats the ridiculous assertion that almost all journalists are left-wingers (meaning traitors.) He promises to put an end to this intolerable situation. . .
      . . . In the coming four years, the official annexation of the West Bank to Israel may become a fact. . .
      . . . If the government continues on its present course, this will lead to certain disaster – the entire country between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River will become one unit under Israeli rule. This Greater Israel will contain an Arab majority and a shrinking Jewish minority, turning it inevitably into an apartheid state, plagued by a permanent civil war and shunned by the world.
      If pressure from without and within eventually compels the government to grant civil rights to the Arab majority, the country will turn into an Arab state. 134 years of Zionist endeavor will come to naught, a repetition of the Crusaders’ kingdom.
      This is so obvious, so inevitable, that one needs an iron will not to think about it. It seems that all major parties in these elections have this will. Speaking about peace, they believe, is poison. Giving back the West Bank and East Jerusalem for peace? God forbid even thinking about it.
      The weird fact is that this week two respected polls – independent of each other – came to the same conclusion: the great majority of Israeli voters favors the “two-state solution”
      , the creation of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders and the partition of Jerusalem. This majority includes the majority of Likud voters, and even about half of Bennett’s adherents.
      How come? The explanation lies in the next question: How many voters believe that this solution is possible? The answer: almost nobody. Over dozens of years, Israelis have been brainwashed into believing that “the Arabs” don’t want peace. If they say they do, they are lying.
      If peace is impossible, why think about it? Why even mention it in the election campaign? Why not go back 44 years to Golda Meir’s days and pretend that the Palestinians don’t exist? (“There is no such thing as a Palestinian people…It is not as though there was a Palestinian people and we came and threw them out and took their country away. They did not exist.” – Golda Meir, June 13, 1969) . . .
      * FROM "THE COORDINATION FORUM FOR COUNTERING ANTISEMITISM" IN ISRAEL (antisemitism.org.il):
      [EXCERPT] Wilhelm Marr (1819-1904) was a German agitator and theorist, who coined the term "antisemitism" as a euphemism for the German Judenhass, or "Jew-hate".
      Marr was an unemployed journalist, who claimed that he had lost his job due to Jewish interference. A political conservative, he was influenced by the conservative pan-German movement, as expounded by Johann Gottfried von Herder, who developed the idea of the Volk, and the Burschenschaft movement of the early nineteenth century, which developed out of frustration among German students with the failure of the Congress of Vienna to create a unified state out of all the territories inhabited by the Volk. The latter rejected the participation of Jewish and other non-German minorities as members, "unless they prove that they are anxious to develop within themselves a Christian-German spirit" (a decision of the "Burschenschaft Congress of 1818"). While they were opposed to the participation of Jews in their movement, like Heinrich von Treitschke later, they did allow for the possibility of the Jewish (and other) minorities participating in the German state if they were to abandon all signs of ethnic and religious distinctiveness and assimilate completely into German Volk.
      Marr took these philosophies one step further by rejecting the premise of assimilation as a means for Jews to become Germans. In his pamphlet Der Weg zum Siege des Germanentums über das Judentum (The Way to Victory of Germanicism over Judaism, 1879) he introduced the idea that Germans and Jews were locked in a longstanding conflict, the origins of which he attributed to race — and that the Jews were winning. He argued that Jewish emancipation resulting from German liberalism had allowed the Jews to control German finance and industry. Furthermore, since this conflict was based on the different qualities of the Jewish and German races, it could not be resolved even by the total assimilation of the Jewish population. According to him, the struggle between Jews and Germans would only be resolved by the victory of one and the ultimate death of the other. A Jewish victory, he concluded, would result in finis Germaniae (the end of the German people). To prevent this from happening, in 1879 Marr founded the League of Antisemites (Antisemiten-Liga), the first German organization committed specifically to combatting the alleged threat to Germany posed by the Jews and advocating their forced removal from the country. . .
  • Netanyahu heads to New York to ‘refute all the lies’ and praise ‘the most moral army in the world’
    • P.P.S. I wonder if "Queen Sara" brought her feathers* with her.
      Lillian, who worked as housekeep for prime minister's wife for six year, files claim with Tel Aviv Regional Labor Court accusing Netanyahu of abuse, underpayment, forced labor on Shabbat.
      [EXCERPT] "Sara Netanyahu abused me, paid me less than minimum wage, didn't pay my social benefits, forced me to work Saturdays even though I observe Shabbat, and forced me to call her 'Mrs. Sara Netanyahu'," these are just some of the allegations Lillian, a former housekeeper for the Netanyahu family in their Caesarea residence, made against the prime minister's wife.
      In a claim filed with the Tel Aviv Regional Labor Court by her lawyers Asaf Sharaf and Shai Lavi, Lillian recounts her version of experiences during her six years working for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wife.
      According to the claim: "The relationship (with Sara Netanyahu) constantly came with a line of humiliation and a hostile atmosphere both at work and outside of work. For example, after Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu was elected prime minister, Lillian was not allowed to call the defendant by her first name, but was to call her, 'Mrs. Sara Netanyahu'.
      "And if she was to make an innocent mistake, out of belief that this was a personal relationship, Netanyahu would shout at her for daring to call her by her first name since, 'I am a person of authority, and every one of my household staff must respect me and call me by my title, Mrs. Sara Netanyahu.'"
      The claim continues to say that "Sara Netanyahu would adorn herself in her feathers and shout aloud: 'This is my beautiful house, and I am the mother of the State of Israel'." . . .
      [EXCEPTS] One ex-Israeli official put it best. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu seems to be "going berserk."
      He is demanding that the United States set a "red line" that, once crossed, will automatically initiate a U.S. attack on Iran. He doesn't even bother to pretend that war with Iran is in U.S. interests. He just wants his war trigger. But he sees the chances for war diminishing every day.
      I think his latest tantrum was produced by last week's New York Times op-ed by its former executive editor, Bill Keller, which stated that even if Iran develops nuclear weapons, they would not necessarily pose a significant threat to Israel, let alone to the United States.
      Keller merely suggested what I have heard Israelis say privately: this whole Iran scare is not about nukes per se, it is about Israel's fear of losing the ability to do whatever it wants to, whenever it wants to. Bomb Gaza. Bomb Lebanon. Bomb Gaza relief ships. Bomb whoever, whenever.
      It is about regional hegemony. After all, militarily Israel can more than handle Iran and both countries know that. That is why Israelis do not share Netanyahu's enthusiasm for war. . .
    • RE: "Netanyahu erases the boundary between world Jewry and Israel in celebration of ‘our country' [i.e., Israel] "
      MY COMMENT: I can still mentally picture myself having stopped by my mother's house, and as I enter the den Netanyahu is speaking at the UN General Assembly for the first time since his election win in 2009. This was being carried on Fox News with more obsequious/sycophantic fanfare than they would likely have had for a U.S. President, even a right-wing Republican.
      Just as I realized the exact nature of what was on and began to listen attentively (unpleasant as that is for me in the case of Netanyahu), I thought I heard Netanyahu say something that I interpreted as his claiming to speak not only for Israelis, but for all Jews wherever they might live*.
      Perhaps I should not have been so surprised, but I was nevertheless stunned and began doubting he had said what I thought I had heard. I knew that Netanyahu's limitless grandiosity included his considering himself to essentially be 'King of (All) the Jews' (i.e. Guardian and Savior of All Jews Everywhere), but I didn't think he had quite enough chutzpah to make a grand proclamation to that effect here in the U.S. in a speech widely broadcasted across this blessed "homeland"** of ours.
      P.S. When I found a transcript, I confirmed that he said essentially what I thought, but he did it in a way seemingly designed so that the claim to speak for all Jews would be missed by most people since instead of saying "all Jews" he says "my people". Unless you pay very close attention so that you can interpret "my people" in the context he uses it, the significance is lost on most people. My suspicion is that the objective was for Jews to understand the significance of what he was saying while it escaped notice by most others. It would not surprise me if articles in the Israeli (Hebrew language) press used Hebrew in place of "my people" that meant something closer to "all the Jews". Aren't I cynical?!?!
      As an aside, I wonder whether cynicism is more of a cause or a symptom of Weltschmerz. Can it perhaps at times be both with the intriguing potential consequence that (assuming the mind doesn't have entirely effective feedback inhibition) it sometimes causes the 'mind blowing' brain equivalent of James Brown (the singer) feeling really, really good***. Can you dig it? It sounds awfully good to me, but then I'm a glutton for punishment!
      URI AVNERY ON THE SORRY STATE OF THE ISRAELI MEDIA/PRESS, AND HOW THE ISRAELIS HAVE BEEN "BRAINWASHED":
      “Israel’s Weird Elections”, by Uri Avnery, Counterpunch, 1/04/13:
      [EXCERPTS] . . . The Israeli media are already to a large extent neutralized, a creeping process not unsimilar to what the Germans used to call Gleichschaltung. [SEE: Gleichschaltung @ Wikipedia - J.L.D. ]
      All three TV channels are more or less bankrupt and dependent on government handouts. Their editors are practically government appointees. The printed press is also teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, except the largest “news” paper, which belongs to Sheldon Adelson and is a Netanyahu propaganda sheet, distributed gratis.
      [Naftali] Bennett repeats the ridiculous assertion that almost all journalists are left-wingers (meaning traitors.) He promises to put an end to this intolerable situation. . .
      . . . In the coming four years, the official annexation of the West Bank to Israel may become a fact. . .
      . . . If the government continues on its present course, this will lead to certain disaster – the entire country between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River will become one unit under Israeli rule. This Greater Israel will contain an Arab majority and a shrinking Jewish minority, turning it inevitably into an apartheid state, plagued by a permanent civil war and shunned by the world.
      If pressure from without and within eventually compels the government to grant civil rights to the Arab majority, the country will turn into an Arab state. 134 years of Zionist endeavor will come to naught, a repetition of the Crusaders’ kingdom.
      This is so obvious, so inevitable, that one needs an iron will not to think about it. It seems that all major parties in these elections have this will. Speaking about peace, they believe, is poison. Giving back the West Bank and East Jerusalem for peace? God forbid even thinking about it.
      The weird fact is that this week two respected polls – independent of each other – came to the same conclusion: the great majority of Israeli voters favors the “two-state solution”
      , the creation of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders and the partition of Jerusalem. This majority includes the majority of Likud voters, and even about half of Bennett’s adherents.
      How come? The explanation lies in the next question: How many voters believe that this solution is possible? The answer: almost nobody. Over dozens of years, Israelis have been brainwashed into believing that “the Arabs” don’t want peace. If they say they do, they are lying.
      If peace is impossible, why think about it? Why even mention it in the election campaign? Why not go back 44 years to Golda Meir’s days and pretend that the Palestinians don’t exist? (“There is no such thing as a Palestinian people…It is not as though there was a Palestinian people and we came and threw them out and took their country away. They did not exist.” – Golda Meir, June 13, 1969) . . .
      October 17, 2013
      Oct 17, 2013 - In a sermon last year at an Irving, Texas, megachurch that helped elect Ted Cruz to the United States Senate, Cruz' father Rafael Cruz indicated that his son was among the evangelical Christians who are anointed as "kings" to take control of all sectors of society, an agenda commonly referred to as the "Seven Mountains" mandate, and "bring the spoils of war to the priests", thus helping to bring about a prophesied "great transfer of wealth", from the "wicked" to righteous gentile believers. link to video of Rafael Cruz describing the "great transfer of wealth" and the role of anointed "kings" in various sectors of society, including government, who are to "bring the spoils of war to the priests".
      Rafael Cruz' dominionist sermon given August 26, 2012, at the New Beginnings Church of pastor Larry Huch, in Irving, Texas has already received considerable scrutiny due to an excellent Huffington Post commentary by Methodist Associate Pastor Morgan Guyton, who noted the explicitly dominionist nature of pastor Cruz' sermon, which concerned the divine mandate for believers, with anointing of "kings" in their respective spheres, to take control over all sectors of society.
      Cruz spoke of "Kings who are anointed to go to war, win the war, and bring the spoils of war to the priests."
      Discussion of the now-notorious speech by Rafael Cruz has missed the fact that Ted Cruz was subsequently blessed and anointed by prominent dominionist pastors, in effect as a "king" in the political/governmental sphere, at a special blessing ceremony at the Marriott Hotel in Des Moines, Iowa, at a July 19th-20th 2013 rally designed to draw pastors into politics.
    • RE: "The actual business of the debate was bracing: virtually everyone in the room acknowledged that Israel’s political values are completely inconsistent with U.S. democratic values.       MY COMMENT: Leading up to the Civil War, when the southern planters got together "the running theme of the discussion was fear". Fear of slave rebellions where their mansions might be torched. Fear their wives and children might be slaughtered. Fear that the blacks were determined to rape their cultured, genteel white women. Fear that they might have their slaves taken away from them by the federal government, and still have to continue paying on the loans they had gotten from the Boston banks to buy their slaves. Fear that they would not receive any compensation at all to at least recoup part of the huge capital outlay they had made in their slaves. I imagine some of the planters called on their fellow countrymen "to be sensitive to those fears if not to respect them".
