The War of Ideas in the Middle East
Hebron expresses everything that is truly ugly about Israel and its inhuman practices. A city in lockdown, ruled by a military junta, all for the benefit of a small bunch of appalling racist zealots who attack the local people with impunity, under the watchful eye of their dumb bodyguards in the IDF. Gideon Levy had it right - anybody who goes there, who has an ounce of decency, will be appalled at the casual violence and deeply unpleasant, phobic, pathological nature of the so-called settlers - what kind of person dedicates their and their family's lives to rancid hatred, harrassment of innocent, powerless people, a more bitter hateful bunch of racists you won't find anywhere in the world. And this is Israel's grand project - to protect and encourage them, to make the local people's lives unbearable. A noble enterprise? don't make me laugh.
The pettiness and small-minded of these people is astounding. Completely unable to think the situation through, instead coming out with wildly exaggerated hysteria, smearing and unwillingness to engage in thought or debate. Are they trying to portray Jewishness as being synonymous with closed mind bigotry? Because if not they are doing a very good job of it.
Well, the destruction of cultural archives and symbols of Palestine is in the same spirit as book-burning. As is the relentless harassment of authors and writers who happen to have an independent view of Israel's activities, the public campaigns for people to be sacked, the silencing of opposition, the undercover operations - who needs to burn books when you have all these other ways of destroying people and culture?
Yes, always worth attacking the messenger instead of the message, when you have nothing useful to say on the subject of nuclear armed Israel and its destabilising influence on the ME.
Great commentary, Annie. I couldn't agree more about the warped, perverse admission that it boils down to a desperate need to define the world as 'us and them'. That is the essence of what these people are fighting for - separatism and an explicit sense of superiority (and thus entitlement). How retrograde and damaging to want to inculcate this in your kids, to stand apart from the world, encourage suspicion and hatred of 'them', at the same time as demanding special entitlements and privileges for 'us'. If you flip this round, believing that 'them' are as entitled to such self aggrandising vanity and exceptionalism, then you justify anti-semitism. In other words, anti-semitism is no different to these Jewish attitudes to the 'other', ie non Jews. And thus anti-semitism is incubated in such medieval attitudes. It is incompatible with the modern world, a kind of fundamentalism. No wonder they are opposed to universal human rights, and equality of all under the law - their philosophy is that they have superior rights.
I find it abhorrent, oppositional, and a recipe for hatred, war and violence of the kind we see Israel justifying all of the time. No wonder they want to keep it quiet.
American Jews don't actually need Israel. Shocking, eh? They have a choice whether to support it or ignore it, but the notion that they need it, and they must obey the decrees which come out of that benighted country, is, in the contemporary world, ridiculous. I would suggest that if Israel wants loyalty, they earn it through their actions and principles, rather than demanding it, using blackmail, smearing and hysteria, in order to support a rotten, apartheid system which no American would countenance at home.

I have nothing but admiration for the way that Haneen Zoabi conducts herself in the face of the most appalling abuse and cretinous insults which is her lot, as it is Palestinians in general, She, and her family, are the true heirs of the ancient people who lived in the region, unlike the thieving arrivistes who have concocted a web of deceit, fantasy and violence to cover their excuses for the occupation and dispossession of people like her. She retains a remarkable dignity and self-possession, whilst also being courageous in her forthright, calm and powerful eloquence. I fear for her, given the numerous examples of the boorish, thuggish behaviour of her opponents. I hope her voice is hear loud and clear not only in Israel, but far and wide, as people slowly begin to understand the depths of the horror show that Israel perpetrates.
NB, George Galloway was elected to the UK parliament yesterday. A local spokesman said that his stand against the war, and his commitment to the Palestinian people, were enormous factors in inspiring many young people to vote, who had never done so before. As usual, the establishment politicians are way behind the instincts of ordinary people.
Israel has no regard for the truth. Preservation of the national myth and the propagandising of it takes precedence over everything. A Palestinian killed or injured is nothing to Israel except a useful warning to others - in the meantime smearing anybody who acquaints the world with the truth of Israel's savagery is the way to maintain its pretence at civility. Really, the absurd amount of money and energy that Israel pours into denial of the reality for Palestine is stupidity and self obsesssion on an epic scale. For a fraction of that investment in lies, hatred and violence against the stateless people they have deliberately created, they could have sorted the problem years ago by investing in equal human rights and a real democracy for all. To achieve it of course, they would have to rejoin the human race instead of standing apart from it, as if normal rules don't apply to them.

Despite the reality that Israel controls, and has done for a very long time, the land between the Jordan and the sea, the mythical two states has allowed Israel to promulgate the myth that 'its' bit is democratic, unlike the 'other' bit. In fact it is one entity which has been successfully gerrymandered to ensure an always Jewish majority and control. It is gerrymandered to consign nearly half of the citizens into a fictional, non-existent state which Israel allows the status of municipalities wholly and solely dependent on their benevolence (or otherwise, as they see fit). Since the state is the guarantor of human rights, the non-existent state of modern Palestine cannot guarantee or provide any human rights to its banished exile population - in fact Israel has robbed them of any rights, and thus self determination or democracy, by placing them in this limbo of a fictional state. Israel is steadily building over any geographical separation, and disallowing any division of resources to underline the point that the so-called 'two states' exist only notionally, both of them virtual states created by Israel to justify the gerrymandering of its vote and its privileges. Israel is overlaid on Palestine, adjusting and appropriating its history and culture to make Palestine look like Israel, and thus Palestine to look like the nothing which Israel has decided it is. Israel is conducting a vanishing act on Palestine, slowly erasing it from the map and its own perception, trying to convince everybody else of its manipulated fiction of history and geography. And what will be left is Gaza and mini-Gazas, stateless people, impoverished by, and held hostage by, a ruthlessly controlling dictatorship who will erase Palestinian and its people from their consciousness by building walls around them where it can't see them. Thus they pretend they are a 'democracy'.
