You have to wonder what is in those documents locked away in D.C. vaults about the damage done to U.S. National Security by Pollard's activities. Wonder if Frank and team will push for this? The intelligence community should...as well as the public.
link to jta.org
"Congressional staffers described Nyer as "relentless," and he eventually struck gold: Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who chairs the U.S. House of Representatives Banking Committee, agreed to sign on. That prompted a total of 39 signatures -- all from Democrats -- to the letter sent to Obama.
Getting Frank was a coup, one congressional insider said, not only because he has a leadership position, but because his pronounced liberalism in other arenas adds credibility to an effort that has been identified in recent years with the Israeli and pro-Israel right.
Frank took up the cause because he long has believed that Pollard's life sentence was disproportionate to the crime, his spokesman said.
"It is something he feels strongly about," Harry Gural told JTA.
Launching the initiative at a Capitol Hill news conference Nov. 18, Frank listed two factors that made the matter timely: Pollard's 25 years in prison as of Sundayand the parlous state of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
"The justification of this is the humanitarian one and the notion that the American justice system should be a fair one," Frank said. "We believe that clemency after 25 years for the offenses of Jonathan Pollard would do that.
"My own hope is that if the president would do this, it would contribute to the political climate within the democracy of Israel and would enhance the peace process."
"On overestimating the power of the Israel Lobby: many people (not just at Mondoweiss) think that the US would not be invading and occupying Iraq if it were not for the power of the Israel Lobby."
The I lobby were one of the very powerful components who pushed hard for the invasion of Iraq. Confluence of interest. Oil, neo, theo cons. Former Secretary of the Treasury Paul O'neil under Bush 43 said in Susskinds "The Price of Loyalty" that Wolfowitz was pushing hard for the invasion in the first Bush 43 cabinet meetings in early 2001. That same group started pushing for military action against Iran based on unsubstantiated claims soon after the invasion of Iraq. Gerecht, Ledeen, Bolton, Rice, Gaffney, Wolfowitz, Cheney etc were everywhere on the MSM repeating false claims about Iran
Heard on NPR the other day that Ahmad Chalabi is waiting in line for Al Maliki to fall from grace.
"Free Pollard and enrage our Intelligence people to revolt!"
Or demand that those documents having to do with the damage done to the U.S. by Pollards treasonous activities that are now locked in a vault be released.
the list of individuals who have an continue to push for Pollards release should all be investigated " "THE TRUE EXTENT OF THE SPY'S DAMAGE REMAINS LOCKED IN GOVERNMENT VAULTS" There would be demands to release the reports about the real damage done by Pollards spying.
link to voices.washingtonpost.com
"In a piece written for a forthcoming journal of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers, founded years ago to support the CIA, Bowman notes that there have been “few rebuttals of this escalation of calls for Pollard’s release…mainly because so few were cognizant of the scope of Pollard’s disclosures, or the misuses of those disclosures, and the damage they did to our own operations and sources."
The true extent of the spy’s damage remains locked in government vaults, Bowman writes, “because when a plea agreement was reached, it was no longer necessary to litigate issues that could have exposed the scope of Pollard’s treachery -- and the exposure of classified systems.”
But the retired Navy captain singles out three of Pollard’s leaks, the first being “the daily report from the Navy’s Sixth Fleet Ocean Surveillance Information Facility (FOSIF) in Rota, Spain, a top-secret document filed every morning reporting all that had occurred in the Middle East during the previous twenty-four hours, as recorded by the NSA’s most sophisticated monitoring devices.”
“Probably the most serious disclosure (of those of which we are aware) was the TOP SECRET NSA RAISIN manual, which lists the physical parameters of every known signal [or electronic communication], notes how we collect signals around the world, and lists all the known communications links then used by the Soviet Union,” Bowman writes.
“It is certainly the thing that stood out in the mind of the sentencing judge; particularly when Pollard alleged at sentencing that there really was no harm done. The judge interrupted and brought him up short, pointing specifically to disclosure of the RAISIN manual"
I have always been intrigued with how quickly special interest groups tried to shut down that Carl Cameron report about U.S. Israeli intelligence co-operation or Israeli communications systems having access to 95% of all U.S. phone calls, etc. The alleged co-operative data mining going on between the two countries etc. The infiltrated back door in that Fox News report. And now this “Well, they’re very good at this kind of thing.”
Also very interested in the way former IAEA weapons inspector Scott Ritter "Target Iran" was taken down. The communications systems, the interest in him, the Judge that sentenced etc

Gang Warfare to Protect Israel’s Secrets
Posted on June 7, 2012 by emptywheel
Easily the most overlooked line in David Sanger’s story on StuxNet is this one:
Mr. Obama concluded that when it came to stopping Iran, the United States had no other choice.
If Olympic Games failed, he told aides, there would be no time for sanctions and diplomacy with Iran to work. Israel could carry out a conventional military attack, prompting a conflict that could spread throughout the region.

do you guys know the name of the man at the U.S. embassy?
"QUESTION: Okay, okay. And then she says that she told them that they were trying to get into her email account – which goes to a different part of this story – on her laptop. He said that if they have your Gmail address, then they can get into your – they can get into the account anyway. She says, “How can they do that?” He says, “Well, they’re very good at this kind of thing.” And he says that they – that the Embassy is aware that the Israelis go in and check people’s email account – emails on their laptops"
Reminds me of Fox News Carl Camerons report about Israeli communication systems having access too 95% of Americans phone calls. Amdocs, Comverse Infosys "Well they're very good at this kind of thing"
link to informationclearinghouse.info
Cameron's report about a back door being infiltrated into the Israeli communication system by a foreign nation has always been interesting to me.
Thanks for reminding me about Colonel Lang's place.
Friends who have spent a great deal of time in Israel have said racism is rampant in Israel. They have witnessed settlers spitting on Palestinian children many times, Israeli soldiers treating Palestinian people with such disrespect that they could barely believe their eyes and ears. This is another example of that "rampant racism"
"The vast majority of Israeli's" have not and will not go for a 2ss based on internationally recognized borders and will never go for a 1ss.
Keep the situation in chaotic limbo. Keep stealing more internationally recognized Palestinian land. Keep undermining U.S. national security. Keep taking U.S. taxpayers money. Keep the American public in the dark.
And I think this is what ultimately pisses NF off.
thanks
I thought Palestinians are unable to present this as a case because they do not have the status as a sovereign or recognized state or something like that
I really did not catch this. Although sure saw and heard this side of NF during that interview about BDS
link to youtube.com
Such an important point. I think NF's effort to clarify his stance on the right of return was important. I thought he leaned Chomsky's way
Just went and planted more in our garden. As I was putting more basil in the ground I am thinking what the hell does it matter what Fink or Weiss or Horowitz or any of us think about this situation. If Palestinians feel the possibility for a two state solution is over...what can be done? And they have plenty of reasons to believe the gig is up. And as NF has pointed out Israel may have never intended for a two state solution. Sure looks like that is the case
The "cult" comments make Finkelstein seem silly (which clearly he is not) or way too emotional....which I have never picked up before. Some odd knee jerk reaction
Will have to read at least three times. Lots there. Two very smart individuals. Interested where their brain and heart strings get into sticky territory. Have always appreciated Finkelstein's commitment and focus on international law and UN resolutions. Have always thought that made the most sense. But what do Palestinians do when Israel keeps expanding, keeps bulldozing Palestinian land and homes and building illegal settlements? Not much legal Palestinian land to discuss when that keeps happening.
Finkelstein; "There never has been a peace process, but rather an annexation process that used the "peace process" as a facade. The record is quite clear that the Israelis never envisaged a full withdrawal from the occupied Palestinian territory and the emergence of a truly independent Palestinian state."
Carter has said similar things about Israel never really wanting a two state
Finkelstein: "If we can coerce a real Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Palestinian territory, and you are there at the rendezvous of victory, I am sure that tears will be streaming down your cheeks, because you will have realized how significant a victory it is, and how hard-won it was."
"Coerce" how much f---king money, support undermining of U.S. national security does Israel need? "coerce" what does that mean?
Finkelstein "I have said many times that Palestinians should not recognize Israel as a "Jewish state" (whatever that even means), unless Israel also explicitly endorses full and equal rights for its minorities and rescinds all discriminatory legislation."
Does this come into play as far as land ownership?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Weiss: "But young visionary Arabs toppled a system by not believing in its powers." And the U.S. MSM fired it up by giving them endless coverage which has clearly not happened in the past or present when it comes to Palestinian protest which have been happening for decades. Ever hear Rachel Maddow or Richard Engel mentioning Palestinian protest...NEVER
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I too thought Finkelstein had questioned the "right of return" He sure clears it up here "I should make clear, lest there be any misunderstanding whatsoever, that the Palestinian right of return is a universally validated right that must be supported (see my most recent statement on the subject at link to zocalopublicsquare.org)."
Even though Finkelstein has expressed that he thinks conversations like this are a waste of time or don't go anywhere. Sure appreciate it.
And Former President Jimmy Carter who I respect a great deal and Archbishop Tutu both believe that what has and continues to take place on the West Bank is APARTHEID.

"Unlike you, I believe, I would have been a bourgeois in the 1850s, and a Lincoln Republican; I would have been for a two-state solution that allowed slavery to persist in the south and vanish in time. Those historic compromises were also vitiated in the space of a few years; and lo and behold some Americans grew impatient and quoted the words, All people are created equal. As Palestinians are impatient today, and who can blame them. There is no equality under the Israeli regime. There has been none since it was founded."
Ok just started reading. The above is pretty honest..because Phil it seems like you have known for a very long time what has been going on in that conflict and it took you decades to finally respond to the oppression and abuse that the Palestinians have been suffering. But when you did finally admit what you more than likely knew what had been going on...you moved in a big way...Mondoweiss etc. But was it humanitarian issues that moved you or your desire to save Israel. Which is not a bad desire but wondering what truly motivates you?
On the other hand Finkelstein (I believe a true humanitarian) responded long ago to their suffering. Walking a mile in Palestinians shoes early on before it became sort of popular.
Finkelstein basically points out that Beinart is an opportunist
Amy Goodman did a segment on the arrest of Al Raee today
link to democracynow.org
Stigletz as is always the case had so many insightful and fact things to say on Democracy today about growing inequality in the U.S.
And Israeli's will have created their own prison.
When I heard her talk about Iran...terribly worrisome
"told them he gives Israel more attention than the Palestinians, and that the window on the peace process has probably closed." And the Orthodox Jewish community, many Zionist respond "Yes"
Phil, Annie, Adam sorry to distract but..Huff Po is reporting that Walker is ahead by a slim margin. Two more hours for Wisconsin voters to vote. Your phone call could be the one to convince a voter to go to the polls

Israel's behavior is not going to change ever based on international laws or agreements, UN resolutions, need for U.S. security even need for Israel's security based on the 67 border. The only way Israel will change their behavior is if aid is threatened and laws and agreements are enforced. We are not talking about a reasonable government or officials.
But they had all ready knew they were not going to be allowed in. So why give it to them then? Clearly they felt really intimidated.
thanks
Former President Jimmy Carter... "but there is no doubt that within the occupied territories Palestinian land that there is a horrendous example of apartheid"
This is a great clip of Carter talking about apartheid in the West Bank
link to youtube.com
Archbishop Tutu knows a little about apartheid
link to news.bbc.co.uk
South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu has accused Israel of practising apartheid in its policies towards the Palestinians.
The Nobel peace laureate said he was "very deeply distressed" by a visit to the Holy Land, adding that "it reminded me so much of what happened to us black people in South Africa".
The Jewish lobby is powerful - very powerful. Well, so what?
Archbishop Desmond Tutu
In a speech in the United States, carried in the UK's Guardian newspaper, Archbishop Tutu said he saw "the humiliation of the Palestinians at checkpoints and roadblocks, suffering like us when young white police officers prevented us from moving about".
The archbishop, who was a leading opponent of apartheid in South Africa, said Israel would "never get true security and safety through oppressing another people".

"First, that Mondoweiss is nearly always described in the MSM as being virulently biased and anti-Israel" Show us..so easy to link. Some proof please
good one
That was an incredible encounter between Dr. B ,Bernstein, Haass, Senor, and Ignatius. Dr. B wiped up the with Bernstein's, Ignatius and Senor's "let's go get Syria and Iran" warmongering. Haass was more subtle. Bernstein was called a "neocon" I really liked when the camera slipped back to a few of the Syria and Iran warmongers faces as Dr. B knocked out their silly and dangerous ideas in the second round. Dr. B even became a bit riled up.
I don't think the neocons are "profoundly unintelligent" I think they are some of the most dangerous people on earth. A collective group of psychopaths with an immense regard for themselves and "their people" who also have a great deal of power and reach. They have little to no regard for the lives or the well being of the "others" who they use for their agenda or kill in the process of that agenda.
Project for a New American and Israeli Century. link to newamericancentury.org
Cannot find that clip of Dr. B with Senor, Bernstein, Ignatius etc at Morning Joe. Glad you reminded me of that morning
The factual Mondoweiss comments have been "normal" in the circles of people who have been working on pushing Reps, media outlets etc to stand up to the I lobby for decades. Clearly the new surge of activity and participants is really shaking things up. But still nothing changing on the ground. In fact as Art Gish used to say "getting worse." Israel is illegally swallowing up the West Bank and E Jerusalem. There is going to be no other choice but a one state solution.
The I lobby labeled Pat Buchanan an "anti-semite" several decades ago. Show me where he has made "anti Jewish" comments. I have heard him criticize Israel's policies and U.S. policies having to do with supporting Israel no matter what they do. I have never heard him make an "anti Jewish" comment. Link please...
Is it a fact that government agencies can access your emails, etc with legal permission but that individual can not access records to find out that there email has been accessed?

How do you check the increase in traffic? Wondering why Comcast/MSNBC gave Buchanan the boot? Did not read the book that they said they were objecting to. Buchanan was one of the only MSNBCers who stood against the invasion of Iraq and has been talking facts about Iran. Maybe the owners do not like this...although Dylan Ratigan does this also. I think Ratigan is the treasure on MSNBC. He hits the ball out of the park on the lack of accountability having to do with Iraq, Wall Street etc.
After you have all ready been told you will not be allowed to enter the country?
Linked to that article at MW. I agree about Buchanan. Lots I disagree with but the "anti-semite" label placed on him by the I lobby decades ago just is not the case. Also respect that he has brought the I/P issue up on MSM outlets many times, stood against the invasion of Iraq. At the Dem convention in Denver Buchanan was on stage with Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow etc. He paid then candidate Obama so many compliments I yelled out "come on out of the closet Pat, know you are a closet Dem" He looked at me and laughed. I chided him again. I think he down deep supported Obama.
She talks way to fast. Those millions that she is making must have set her '"adrift" her very selective human rights stances are especially revealing.
Incredible post. The truth hurts
"The USA has been an imperialist, predatory nation from the beginning. "Manifest Destiny" was the watchword for the march across the continent and the wiping out of the Indians; which begat the 1848 theft of half of Mexico, the 1898 war with Spain that led to planting the flag in Puerto Rico and Manilla; which presaged a revolving door of US military attacks and occupations in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and on and on morphing in more recent history to funding and using the local military and oligarchs to put US puppet governments in power (Brazil, Argentina, Chile, El Salvador among others). Then there is 1954 and reinstalling the Shah in Iran and then the overthrow of a democratically elected government in Guatamala, both of which were CIA capers. Democrats and Republicans collaborated on all of these interventions."
Reality can bite
Daniel Pipes group Campus Watch as well as a few other groups had been successful at keeping the I/P issue under wraps on campuses for a solid decade or more. No longer
yep
"to whom Jewishness (of a state) is more important than human rights"Think you have something there.
Although I think it may be some of us that are realizing that he may be a solid member of the Zionist "cult." Not sure how typical.
"He expects that we’ll enforce existing international law through treaty bodies that include a criminal court with formal jurisdiction over those crimes that you’ve mentioned."
How do you get Israel into an international criminal court setting?
I know he is all about international law and decisions made by international bodies but where have we seen any evidence or movement towards enforcement of those decisions?
I have always appreciated Finkelstein's hammering to focus on the law in regard to the I/P issue. BUT when Israel has confiscated internationally recognized Palestinians land in the West Bank and built and expand illegal settlements and illegal housing in E Jerusalem what does he expect? Israel is moving the ball towards a one state solution. Which clearly Finkelstein does not want.
What does Finkelstein say about the "right of return"? Law or that Palestinian should negotiate. Have you ever heard Finkelstein call Zionism a cult?
"[Obama] repeatedly expressed concerns that any American acknowledgment that it was using cyberweapons — even under the most careful and limited circumstances — could enable other countries, terrorists or hackers to justify their own attacks."
Monkey see monkey do. If the U.S. and Israel strike Iran's systems what does one expect Iran to do? Sit and take it.... or strike back?
"I think it is both accurate and a powerful reminder that what Obama and his American and Israeli kosher cowboys are up to may be one day be considered a folly of historic dimensions." That is what the former Bush administration officials and former CIA analyst Flynt and Hillary Mann Leverett think. That the Obama administration is playing the situation with Iran ALL WRONG
So much being written about Flame all over the internet. This once again demonstrates how Israel and the I lobby own U.S. foreign policy. Israel has clearly said to the U.S. play it our way or we will bomb. You never hear anything about Obama and team or anyone demanding that Israel sign the very Non Proliferation treaty that Iran signed. From what I have read over at the IAEA's website Israel's un inspected...undeclared stockpile of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons has been a decades long thorn in the side of everyone in the neighborhood. A real threat to peace in the middle east. And no one in the U.S. or Israel is talking about this. Israel needs to sign the NPT...open up to inspections.
This takes me back to the original four part report that Fox News reporter Carl Cameron did right after 9/11 about a foreign country infiltrating Israeli based communication systems that have access to 95% of Americans phone calls. Did Iran get into Israel's system?
link to informationclearinghouse.info
And then to why the Bush administration purposely took Valerie Plame out who was allegedly following what Iran was doing in regard to their nuclear plan. Still would like to know what the supposed report about how Plame's outing undermined U.S. National Security.
Annie what a dig. Thanks. The I lobby driving Kirks office. Which seems like the case before and after the stroke. Thanks for digging up those names Goldberg and Kreshtin and what they have been up to.
I have been thinking about how the I/P issue and the I lobby owning the U.S. congress on U.S. foreign policy in the middle east was talked about and dealt with before Carter's book "Palestine Peace..Not Apartheid" , Walt and Mearsheimer's book "Israel Lobby" and Mondoweiss. I know U.S. citizens who have been lobbying(and many other efforts) their Reps to base their decisions on the I/P issue on facts for decades. But there was a distinct shift in the conversation on the internet B.M (before Mondoweiss) and A.M. (after Mondoweiss). You could go to Al Jazeera and hunt around for articles about the issue. Now all you have to do is come to Mondoweiss and still hunt around but not as necessary. David Corn did try to break through this about 10 years ago on his first website. Great conversations were taking place. But his site was really attacked by trolls etc. But now we have Mondoweiss and Al Jazeera. If only we could push the MSM outlets to take down their wall of silence on these issues. Dylan Ratigan and Chris Hayes are getting close. We need to keep pushing.
I want to thank Phil, Adam and their Mondoweiss team once again for all they are doing for human rights and justice on these critical issues!

Has someone compiled a list of Americans and internationals that have not been allowed into Israel? Must be getting mighty long.
So when these "enemy Arab countries" start banning Israeli or Jewish travelers from coming into those countries Fredblogs will go be pulling out the "anti semite" card
Hostage interesting but my original point was that Zionist and many at the UN who helped create Israel more than likely knew that Palestinians forced, threatened, some killed...off their lands would reject this agreement from the beginning.
If only we could get close to that original agreement that they all knew the Palestinians would reject then.
So do you think these methods should be used to interrogate our congressional reps and Israeli agents in our country working for Israel? Dennis Ross "do you feel more Jewish than American" "More Israeli than American" Paul Wolfowitz "do you.... Judy Miller, Douglas Feith Senator Liebermann etc etc etc
Wonder what would have happened if you said no to the email issue. What can they do besides put you into the Israeli "facility" I would have said no right there. They had all ready denied what would have happened that was any different?

wondering if there is documented long list of Americans and others who are being turned away by the Israeli government? This list is growing growing
"“I can’t believe we are funding this system. I understand the special relationship between America and Israel, but there is clearly something wrong with the way we are being treated”.
Apartheid
This is insane. Israel is going to become a prison for Israeli's. When countries around the world start stopping Israeli's from entering based on Israel being an apartheid state.
Najwa and Sasha who are your Reps? We should all be contacting them as well as the Dept of Justice. and human rights organizations. Document, document, document.
Wondering what people can do before they take trips to Israel which would help document the apartheid methods being used.

"I think reclaiming judaism from Israel’s attempt to co-opt it is also a large factor. I also see a simple concern among people to speak out and work against wrongs being done. Then, it is a human issue, rather than a tribal jewish one." Bingo

Rumsfeld is a war criminal. In other countries they put their leaders who are war criminals on trial or the ICC goes after them. When it comes to U.S. leaders who lie a nation into an invasion based on a "pack of lies" they just write books and go on talk shows. Some become foreign policy advisers, or upper level CEO's at defense companies. Rumsfeld and team belong in orange jump suits behind bars

Former head of the CIA's Bin Laden unit has a few things to say about the Syrian situation
link to non-intervention.com
"Washington’s threat mongering about Syria for a long time had to do with both parties’ readiness to earn campaign donations by towing the anti-Syria propaganda line put forth by Israel and its AIPAC-led fifth column of U.S. citizens. (NB:Ironically, AIPAC’s deliberate corruption of the U.S. Congress and political system has always been a far greater threat to America than Syria.) And, indeed, the Russia-armed Syrians may have posed a threat to Israel and its ongoing expansion into Palestinian-owned territory. But this was a threat to Israel, never a threat to the United States, although U.S. leaders have spoken and spent, and still speak and spend as if the Syrian marines — if there are any — were soon going to splash ashore along the Hamptons’ beaches and ruin the holidays of many cocaine-addled but campaign-contributing Hollywood celebrities.
Given the reliable ability of Israel and its U.S. fifth column to determine and control the content of U.S. policy in the Islamic world, the ersatz Syrian threat remained front and center until the Arab Spring unleashed a fatal dementia that is likely to destroy Israel and embroil the United States and its allies in a losing clash of civilizations with the Islamic world. This fatal dementia can be found in the words and — to give them the benefit of the doubt — the thoughts of Mrs. Clinton, Obama, Rice, McCain, Cameron, and Graham that assert the Arab Spring ensures the installation of secular democracy across the Arab and Islamic worlds. Although Islamic parties have won all of the elections since the Tunisian regime fell — and Egyptians are poised to choose between Islamists on the one side, and the army and Mubarak‘s assistant tyrants on the other — Mrs. Clinton still insists that secular democracy is on the march. And it is, but only in the reality-proof brains of the Secretary of State and other of our Ivy-League educated (?) political and media leaders."
If only the U.S. were truly concerned about human rights in Syria. But anyone who knows the U.S.'s business in that part of the world knows that is not the truth.
People in that part of the world find it absurd that leaders in the U.S. responsible for thousands of deaths in Iraq based on a "pack of lies" which many people around the world consider a "massacre" or Israeli leaders or those in the I lobby are lecturing Syrian leaders about human rights etc. Why is it that these same U.S. leaders and MSM host, Israeli leaders, I lobby are calling what is happening in Syria a "massacre" yet either ignore the dead, injured and displaced in Iraq due to the U.S. invasion or refer to the dead in Iraq or from U.S. drones as "collateral damage" Or the innocent that Israel has "massacred" Why is it that as soon as innocent people in Syria have been brutally killed the images and numbers of dead immediately make it up on U.S. MSM outlets like MSNBC etc yet these same outlets never showed images of Iraqi dead or never ever report about the numbers killed in Iraq or by U.S. drones?
Having trouble with the audio. The movement and awareness about facts on the ground that has grown in the young Jewish community and even in the older Jewish community the last five years has been incredible to witness. Although I have over heard conversations and talked with some in the "Young Jewish and Proud" group at the Occupy Aipac gatherings. Warning watch out for your egos taking over and inferring that this decades long movement began and ends with your group. I heard some out of control arrogance and claims being repeated by members.
Always give attention to those who have come before you on an issue. Always. Be honest about this movement and awareness growing in the Jewish community as new. That for decades many of the facts have been deliberately ignored and shut down by some in that same community. Be honest about these facts
terrific...movement. Sodastream is doing a heavy advertisement blitz here in the states
Justin Raimando on the "hero" debate
link to original.antiwar.com
Over at Huff Po too. 13,ooo comments. Chris Hayes has opened up the silent Iraq debate. link to huffingtonpost.com
Some comments are intense. Lots of our way or the highway comments at Chris Hayes site.
Phil and Mondoweiss folks there has been a huge discussion, debate argument going on over at Chris Hayes Up program about Chris's focus on the use of the word "hero" in relationship to our Vets. It was a great Sunday program. I thought Chris and Liliana (from the Nation) were spot on. You should watch the whole hour on the topic. But clearly Chris has received some static. I did think the timing was rather shaky. Day before Memorial day. But important conversation/argument going on

Thanks Phil.
And our MSM is consumed with what they are calling "massacres" in Syria. Every news outlet...images of those killed, repeating the number killed, repeat over and over again that it is a "massacre" Yet these same outlets seldom if ever aired images of dead in Iraq, dead in the Gaza and certainly do not mention numbers of children dead, injured etc. Amazing to watch how quickly those gruesome images come out of Syria and make it onto Rachel Maddows, etc. Direct link. The whole world is witness to these huge contradictions. Guessing the U.S. and Israel do not want to competetion the "massacre" arena.
This morning on MSNBC's Morning Joe they were repeating their Syria "massacre" rant... Dan Senor, David Ignatius, Carl Bernstein were going on and on about what the U.S. should do in regard to the "massacre" in Syria. As if they think anyone believes they are all of a sudden these humanitarian individuals concerned about human rights. Hear any squeaks out of this crew when it came to deaths in Iraq, in the Gaza? Such pathetic hypocrites. Dr. Brzezinski ripped up the idea of military action in Syria, the idea that the U.S. has to make Russia behave in regard to Syria(Bernstein was really pushing this). Dr. B wiped up the floor with their inflammatory rhetoric. Amazing to watch and listen to the immoral (U.S. and talking heads) demanding that the immoral (Assad)be moral. That really flies out there on the world stage. Someone called Carl Bernstein a "neocon"...
Leaders who say they have been speaking to burning bushes who are god and claim that the Jews are the "chosen people" Encourage to treat goyim less respectfully, fairly than Jews. Ok to kill non Jews. A bunch of Jewish guys with an agenda and then sold to the public via fear and copy rights. How the hell did Bibles end up in hotel rooms.
this land belongs to the Palestinians not the Israeli's. Illegal and immoral
I remember when 60 minutes did a piece on The Ir David Foundation. Bet Leslie Stahl raised a bunch of money for the project with that program
At least Leahy said it. He has demonstrated some nerve on this issue in the past
Adam the Mondoweiss team is on fire for justice. Thanks
Thanks Adam will use this incredible visual . Demonstrating once again Israel's apartheid state
"They’re getting a very bad name around the world for themselves and the cries of “anti-semites” and “Palestinians are terrorists” have lost their power." Have had and continues to expand their "bad name" around the world. When Israel stops building and expanding illegal settlements in the West Bank and illegal housing in E Jerusalem, decides to abide by UN resolutions, signs the NP'T that they demand that their neighbors abide by...Oh did I say when hell freezes over. Nations and people around the world will feel differently toward the internationally recognized state of Israel based on legal boundaries
Hey Phil check this out over at Antiwar.com. Mondoweiss mentioned
Now I am not anti Buchanan. He voiced strong opposition to the invasion of Iraq. Has brought up the influence of the I lobby and Israel's disproportionate and destructive influence on US foreign policy for years. Have I disagreed with him on either issues yes. But he is rock solid on other issues.
How Bill Kristol Purged the Arabists
by Patrick J. Buchanan, May 29, 2012
Print This | Share This After taping John Stossel’s show on May 15 in New York, the Mrs. and I took the 10 a.m. Acela back to Washington. Once we had boarded the train, who should come waddling up the aisle but Bill Kristol.
The Weekly Standard editor seemed cheerful, and we chatted about the surge in Mitt Romney’s popularity and prospects.
I did not ask what he had been doing in New York, but thanks to the website Mondoweiss, I found out. Kristol was there for a May 15 “debate” with Jeremy Ben-Ami of J Street, the pro-Israel organization, at B’nai Jeshurun synagogue on the Upper West Side.
After listening to Kristol, writes Phil Weiss, “I am still reeling.”
“Kristol was treated like royalty and came off as … a Republican Party warlord,” bragging “about how all the hostile elements to Israel inside the Republican Party were purged over the last 30 years — [and] no one [now] dared to question the power of the Israeli lobby.”
“The big story in the Republican Party over the last 30 years, and I’m very happy about this,” said Kristol, is the “eclipsing” of the George H.W. Bush-James Baker-Brent Scowcroft realists, “an Arabist old-fashioned Republican Party … very concerned about relations with Arab states that were not friendly with Israel….”
That Bush crowd is yesterday, said Kristol. And not only had the “Arabists” like President Bush been shoved aside by the neocons, the “Pat Buchanan/Ron Paul type” of Republican has been purged.
“At B’nai Jeshurun,” writes Weiss, “Kristol admitted to playing a role in expelling members of the Republican Party he does not agree with.” These are Republicans you had to “repudiate,” said Kristol, people “of whom I disapprove so much that I won’t appear with them.”
“I’ve encouraged that they be expelled or not welcomed into the Republican Party. I’d be happy if Ron Paul left. I was very happy when Pat Buchanan was allowed — really encouraged … by George Bush … to go off and run as a third-party candidate.”
Kristol’s point: Refuse to toe the neocon line on Israel, and you have no future in the Republican Party.
Ben-Ami seemed equally exultant: “We’ve won the war; we won the war,” he told the audience. Ninety-nine percent of Congress now votes almost 100% pro-Israel.
But Ben-Ami appeared nervous about how this unanimity in the Congress behind Israel had been achieved:
I very seriously and absolutely do believe that a significant percentage of American members of the House of Representatives and the Senate are intimidated on this issue (of Israel). … They worry about the ramifications of speaking out. … They are worried about the attacks that they will receive.
Ben-Ami said the 50 members who have criticized Israel are courageous, but “another 200 are scared to do it.” Haaretz.com reports Ben Ami as saying congressmen “live in fear” of the Israeli lobby.
Kristol laughed at this and dared Ben-Ami to name them.
When Ben-Ami brought up the destruction of Palestinian rights on the West Bank and said Hillary Clinton repeatedly raises this issue with Israel, writes Weiss, “Kristol sniggered.”
It’s a “myth,” said Kristol, that Arabs care about Palestinians. The Israeli occupation on the West Bank can last for 45 or 60 years more. Bill Kristol on Palestinian rights sounds like Bull Connor talking about Negro rights in Birmingham in 1965.
Another source says Kristol predicted that Sen. Joe Lieberman, whose voting record is closer to Socialist Bernie Sanders’ than to conservative Jim DeMint’s, will be secretary of state in the Romney administration.
A former head of the Israel lobby AIPAC describes Lieberman as “the No. 1 pro-Israel advocate and leader in the Congress.”
Joe led the cheers for our last three Middle East wars — and has pushed for two more, against Syria and Iran.
About Kristol’s comments, a point of personal privilege.
George W. Bush never “encouraged” me to go third party. At the Iowa straw poll in 1999, he asked me to stay in the party, and party chair Jim Nicholson came to my home to make the same request.
At the synagogue, Kristol was never asked about his role in the Iraq War that he and his collaborators pressured Bush to wage as “Israel’s fight against terrorism is our fight.”
Some 4,500 Americans died in that war, 35,000 were wounded, and 100,000 Iraqis perished, leaving half a million widows and orphans.
Result: U.S. influence in the Middle East is at a nadir. Al-Qaeda has spread into Pakistan, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Syria, and North Africa.
Now the neocons are worming their way into the Romney camp, dropping us hints on whether John Bolton or Joe Lieberman will be the next secretary of state.
Has Gov. Romney imbibed the Kristol Kool-Aid that caused the war and cost the party Congress in 2006 and the presidency in 2008?
Hard to believe, but we should find out before November.
Thanks Annie and Phil. Amazing to think that Rosen a top official for Aipac caught red handed illegaly and knowingly accessing highly classified US intelligence about Iran etc. passing the info to Israeli officials undermining U.S. national security continues to have so much power...
Amazing to watch and listen to the MSM host report about how many Syrians have been killed by the Assad government and stream gruesome images of the dead in and these same outlets have never ever displayed images of how many children or innocent people killed, injured displaced as a direct consequence of our immoral and illegal invasion of Iraq. You know "massacres"
Never have these same MSM outlets displayed images of the thousands killed in Gaza during Israel's "massacres" Obama's drones killing thousands of innocents.
Guess the U.S. and Israel etc do not like competition in the "massacre" arena.
"Precisely who ordered the hits and why, was never conclusively determined." No surprise there...being conclusive is not a strength of the WaPo or other outlets pushing a military confrontation with Iran.
When is the last time you have read an article in U.S. outlets or heard one of our Reps or an MSM host or journalist asking why Israel has and continues to refuse to sign the NPT?
Aaron David Miller is on NPR a great deal. He often promotes what seems to be a reasonable approach with Iran then he much more smoothly repeats the unsubstantiated claims about Iran. Wonder if Israel will pre-emptively attack Iran between Nov 6 and inauguration day the way they with with the Gaza. Oh yeah Iran is not Gaza...
Hope folks track how many times and where they hear unsubstantiated claims about Iran being repeated. Would be a cool feature if Mondoweiss could put up a spot for us to post these unsubstantiated statements about Iran that are repeated all over our MSM
"How much does Israel drive the discussion here?" One hundred percent. Israel and the I lobby are the absolute driving forces. Not a shadow of a doubt. Amazing to think that Aipac still packs the punch that they do. After their two top officials Rosen and Weissman were tracked accessing U.S. classified intelligence on Iran and passing the information on to Israeli officials they skated. Undermine U.S. national security and what happens to Aipac...they get even stronger
This morning on MSNBC's Alex Witts program they had former Ambassador Marc Ginsberg on pushing a military strike on Iran. He said something like it has been determined that Iran is enriching uranium beyond 20%. Which I have not heard anywhere else. This could be the new falsehood that the neocons will start repeating. And no where no where in the MSM do we hear that Iran as a signatory to the NPT has a legal right to enrich up to 20%. And we never ever hear them mention that these demands are coming from Israel a nation unwilling to sign the NPT which massive stockpiles of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. Not a whisper
There is an analysis about this situation over at Race for Iran "Did Obama Take The Military Option Against Iran Off The Table" Worth the read
I thought Obama has said some things that indicate he knows Iran not only has the right to enrich uranium as signatories of the NPT but that he knows that the reduction in the percentage will be as far as they go...right now.
What happenned to the Rand Paul legislation trying to block any military strike on Iran based on these unsubstantiated claims?
And we never hear any MSM host, Reps etc ever mention that as a signatory of the NPT Iran has the right to enrich uranium up to 20%. That there is no hard evidence that Iran has a nuclear weapons program. That a deal was turned down by the U.S. where Iran agreed to I believe access enriched uranium via other legal outlets. What Aipac Jinsa and the nation of Israel who continues to be unwilling to sign the NPT are demanding is absolutely absurd
Caroline what a beautiful and meaningful post. Remember as a child reading such horrific stories about what had happenned to Jews and others during Hitlers killing machine reign that I would sob in my room for hours so shaken that my mother tried to forbid me from reading WWII books. But I refused. Would shake my core as did reading stories about what took place for people brutally forced from their lives in Africa to shores far away or what took place for Native Americans as genocide was committed against them. Cruelty, torture, enslavement death. These human rights issues and crimes against humanity have shaken many of us to our cores. What we decide to do about it takes these humanitarian instincts to greater levels. Thank you for your activities in the West Bank
Wonderful and "beautiful" indeed! "We need to spread the word"
Andrea Mitchell was pushing the mantra that this latest effort with Iran will not work on MSNBC's Morning Joe this morning. She has been doing this on MSNBC for years now. Repeating the unsubstantiated claims about Iran and then pushing for sanctions for years. This morning on the program Former ambassador Richardson shared his opinion about these latest negotiations and said that he did not think these lastest efforts would work. Then Andrea took the opportunity to fuel that view by asking Bill Richardson "what would you do bomb them?" Talk about putting words in someones mouth. Richardson said " no but keep up the sanctions"
Never ever in our MSM do you hear Andrea Mitchell, Diane Rehm, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews etc etc anyone state the facts. As a signatory to the IAEA's Non Proliferation Treaty Iran has the legal right to enrich uranium. They have the legal right to enrich up to 20%.. To ask them to enrich to a lower level is one thing. Israel and the I lobby want them to stop enriching all together and also undermined an offer by Brazil and some other nation to enrich to the level that Iran needs for peaceful purposes. All of this coming out of Israel a nation who has and continues to refuse to sign the NPT and sit on massive stockpiles of un inspected nuclear ,biological and chemical weapons. And Israel's Reps in the U.S. congress push this hypocritical stance in Aipac/ Jinsa legislation. So terribly absurd/
