"This is the moment for a “Nixon to China” – of turning the tables and demolishing the game. Obama has to know that most Americans are against wars, including the soldiers, contrived polls notwithstanding."
The "Nixon to China" moment for Obama is the idea that the Leveretts have been pushing. And they know far more than most on this topic
Keep reading and hearing Russia and China are not going to blink on Iran.

In his Op Ed, Ambassador Hua states his bottom line up front, with commendable clarity: “It is unrealistic for the US to expect China to act in a way that is harmful to its interests and against its diplomatic principles.” After succinctly reviewing why, contrary to Western stereotypes, “Iran is neither rogue nor fundamentalist,” he gets to the core of Sino-American disagreements over dealing with the Islamic Republic:
“The US is not willing to let its dominance in the Middle East be challenged by a regional power like Iran; so the hostility and antagonism between the two countries has grown. In contrast, Sino-Iranian relations are one of the oldest bilateral relations in the world and valued by both sides…The foundations for their friendship are that China has never intervened in Iran’s domestic affairs and their economies are complementary, offering huge potential for cooperation.
The US hopes to enlist China’s help in dealing with Iran. But that’s impossible because China will never join the zero-sum game between the US and Iran…The disagreement between the US and China has become especially serious with the US imposing sanctions to restrict Iran’s oil exports as China is a big importer of Iranian oil. But maintaining relations with Iran is a matter concerning China’s vital interests and China’s fundamental diplomatic principles. The US should respect China’s friendly relations with Iran, as well as its interests.”
Ambassador Hua is kind enough to cite one of our posts on the triangular dynamics between Iran, China, and the United States, see here [link to July 27, 2011 post, “U.S. Sanctions and China’s Iran Policy”], including our observation that “the United States cannot forever ask other countries to act in ways that are harmful to their interests.” He expands on this point, noting that “the US may gain some short-term victories by asking China to act against its own interests but this will only sour the Sino-US relationship in the long run. To prevent disagreements over Iran from harming bilateral relations, it is necessary for the two sides to respect each other’s interests and bottom line. That requires the US change its hostility toward Iran.”

You have to wonder how much pressure Cspan is feeling and bending over to from the I lobby. This is at Camera's Cspan watch website. How many other special interest groups have CSpan watch websites?
link to camera.org
"Moreover, except for the rare guest on Washington Journal who questions any of the numerous anti-Israel or antisemitic charges leveled by callers, these invariably false charges are tacitly accepted. Why does C-SPAN repeatedly permit bigotry and misinformation targeting Jews and the Jewish state? No other ethnic or religious group or nation is repeatedly vilified on these broadcasts.
According to C-SPAN's Web site, more than 28 million viewers tune in each week – making it an information source of potential significance. Among its most popular programs is the Washington Journal despite its persistent failure to adhere to journalistic standards. The 3-hour daily public affairs and call-in show has been given a free pass for too many years from its major patrons such as Comcast, the largest cable television provider in the country. Neil_Smit@cable.comcast.com is the e-mail address of Neil Smit, President of Comcast Cable and most prominent member of C-SPAN's five-member Board of Directors executive committee. Courteous, concise e-mails should urge Comcast to make clear to C-SPAN executives that Washington Journal must not continue providing an open platform to anti-Jewish, anti-Israeli bigots. A few seconds tape-delay, like those used by most call-in radio shows, should be sufficient. C-SPAN chief executives are sswain@c-span.org, rkennedy@c-span.org."

Brian Lamb was recently on WAMU's Kojo Nnamdi show. I had called with the statement/question "Brian Lamb is one of my heroes for creating CSpan." Then for Brian "has Cspan ever been pressured by a special interest group to be silent about particular issues" Was switched onto the show and the connection was bad (first time this has happened to me ). If Lamb is ever on another talk show (did get through to ask him a question on the Diane Rehm show) I hope folks call in and ask him whether Cspan gets pressured by the I lobbby more than any other group to not cover the I/P issue. Or call into Washington Journal during open phones and ask that question. While callers seem better informed about this issue it does appear that Cspan in general (as Phil points out) and Washington Journal are having guest on who lean hard towards supporting Israel no matter what they do.
Really wonder how much the right wing group Camera is having on CSpans willingness to cover this critical issue. Camera objects to any questions or comments about what Israel is doing, or the power of the I lobby in congress and their push for a military confrontation with Iran based on unsubstantiated and trumped up claims.
link to camera.org
Thanks for pointing this out Phil. There seems to be a real take over at Cspan although callers on Washington Journal have been pushing for the discussion to open up.
In a six week period Washington Journal had Barbara Slavin, Yoghi Dreazen, Anne Marie Slaughter (who push that negotiations with Iran have been exhausted) and then two individuals from WINEP link to washingtoninstitute.org Micheal Singh and Ash Jan who were both pushing for a military attack on Iran and repeating totally unsubstantiated claims about Iran. This is fair balanced and accurate coverage?
Have not seen Flynt or Hillary Mann Leverett or any other experts on CSpan or Washington Journal who address the situation with Iran based on facts for a very long time

Not sure why the "Phil's wife" thing keeps being repeated by Phil and others. Not sure why Phil chooses to not give her a name (even if it is fake) since he refers to her opinions. "my wife" "his wife" Is this the 1950's? Reminds me of when I would take our 3 daughters into museums and they would always come out asking why any reference to women were generally "the wife" "wives of" "the women folk" No identities. I can understand she may not want her exact name used...but this is redongdiculous.
Elitism, racism, classism slip in places we may not be aware but I don't think this is one of them. I think Phil was pointing out formerly well educated people can have their heads up where the sun does not shine on critical issues even more than those without alleged terrific educations. Always brings me back to my childhood addiction to reading about WWII and that horrific genocide. As a kid I would ask quietly and then out loud "how and why did people stand by and not do anything for so long" Some either did not know or did not care.
Then all I have to do is look at the lack of concern, empathy etc that most Americans are guilty of when it comes to the dead in Iraq...the situation in Palestine etc. Part of the "why" no one cares... is lack of honest fact based coverage. Some people really do not know. And some of it is people do not give a rats ass and that of course is much more frightening. People who know and do not respond

Here is my communication with Senator Sherrod Brown about signing the letter to President Obama. Clearly his response is an automatic response of some kind because his staff clearly did not read my letter to him:
My statement to him sent from his contact link:
Senator Sherrod Brown,
I was deeply disappointed that you signed the letter from 44 Senators to President Obama encouraging President Obama to stop negotiating with Iran There are many things in that letter that are unsubstantiated, extremely dangerous and a terrible way to approach this situation with Iran. You may be aware that Iran is a signatory of the Non Proliferation Treaty and has the legal right to enrich uranium up to 20% for peaceful purposes. That the Iaea has not found any evidence to back up the Israeli lobbies and Israel's claims that they are enriching beyond the legal limits that they are legally able as signatories of the NPT. You may also be aware that the very nation Israel that is pushing the U.S. into another military confrontation based on unsubstantiated claims has and continues to be unwilling to sign the very important Non Proliferation Treaty. That Israel sits on massive stockpiles of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons that go un inspected. That many nations have written to the IAEA for decades about the threat to peace in the middle east that these weapons continue to pose.
Senator Brown you and your staff need to spend more time reading the IAEA reports link to iaea.org
Would also recommend that you and your staff spend more time at Flynt and Hillary Mann Leveretts website Race for Iran. Hillary and Flynt were both officials in the Bush (43) administration. Hillary has directly negotiated with Iran. Flynt quit the Bush administration just before the invasion of Iraq because he disagreed with the invasion. Their website is filled with accurate and fact based material on Iran. In fact I would hope that Senator Brown and his staff would invite the Leveretts to your DC office and consult with them about this critical situation.

Senator Brown your willingness to sign this letter is deeply troubling. I am alerting many people about this very serious mistake on your part.
SENATOR SHERROD BROWN'S RESPONSE
"Dear Ms. Galt:
Thank you for getting in touch with me about efforts to prevent the Islamic Republic of Iran from obtaining weapons of mass destruction.
The government of Iran must not be permitted to develop weapons of mass destruction. As a steadfast supporter of Israel and a member of the Senate Banking Committee — which has jurisdiction over sanctions — I repeatedly have supported and called for strong sanctions against Iran.
In December 2011, I cosponsored an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act requiring the President to prohibit transactions between U.S. and Iranian financial institutions. This amendment also bars foreign banks from opening or maintaining bank accounts in our nation if the President determines that the institution has knowingly conducted financial transactions with Iran’s central bank.
While we have imposed stringent sanctions on Iran in the past, I believe we need to do more. In February 2012, I voted, in the Senate Banking Committee of which I am member, to submit legislation increasing sanctions on Iran to the full Senate. This legislation, the Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Human Rights Act — which I cosponsored — would broaden the list of punitive sanctions, restrict joint ventures in the development of energy and uranium products, and stem the tide of weapons that flow into Iran. I also cosponsored a recent resolution to affirm that it is in the interest of the United States to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
While we must restrict the government of Iran's ability to obtain weapons of mass destruction, we must also remain open to working with Iranian citizens who seek peace, freedom, the rule of law, and the preservation of their culture. The Iranian government’s suppression of human rights and freedoms is unacceptable. President Obama has taken important steps in developing a diplomatic strategy to address this issue, and his leadership on this effort will be crucial as we move forward.
After a decade of heroic efforts by our troops, we are finally in the process of withdrawing our troops from Afghanistan in the same manner as we extricated our forces from Iraq. No one wants to provoke a conflict with Iran while we are in the middle of withdrawing troops from the longest war in our country’s history and watching closely the democratic process take root in Iraq.
I will continue to press the Administration to work with the international community to ensure that Iran adheres to democratic policies and respects the rights of its citizens. Should legislation concerning Iran come before the Senate for a vote, I will be sure to keep your views in mind.
Sincerely,
Sherrod Brown
United States Senator

"I don’t think Israel should exist at all." But it does based on a manipulated UN vote. Israel does exist based on the internationally recognized 48/67 borders. The U.S. has no right to exist. But it does. Israel has no "right to exist" but it does. They would be very wise to start moving towards that 67 deal before there is not other choice than a one state solution. And the U.S. would be wise to push Israel in that direction
Because NPR's Terri Gross and MSNBC's Rachel Maddow tells the public so. And most U.S. MSM outlets have been allowing Reul Marc Gerecht, John Bolton, Cheney, Condi "mushroom cloud"Rice, Barbara Slavin, Yoghi Dreazen (who also promote myths that diplomacy has been exhausted) and others who have persistently been repeating unsubstantiated claims about Iran for a solid 10 years. All of these claims go unchallenged.
Well I did hear Flynt Leverett challenge Charlie Rose when he repeated the debunked claim that the Iranian President said "wipe Israel off the map"
Flynt challenged his inaccurate and debunked claim

As Phil has admitted right here on his own website this 'standing up" for the Palestinians is new for him. As welcome and incredibly effective that it is. New for him and he admits it. Whether it is from a truly humanitarian place in him or whether it is all about saving Israel...I don't really care. His newly discovered awareness or willingness to talk out loud about the conflict and creating this website was a much needed and used political breakthrough
When U.S. MSM outlets have been repeating unsubstantiated claims about Iran for a solid 10 years what would one expect?
The public is waking up. Callers into Washington Journal questioning U.S. foreign policy and the unbridled support for Israel is happening more and more. The anti truth group Camera is tracking phone calls. They object to any fact based phone calls about the conflict or Israel and the I lobbies roll and control over U.S. middle east foreign policy. Go through some of the statements and questions. Camera's Cspan Watch objects to all questions about the conflict

Report criticizes Israel PM over 2010 naval raid
By AMY TEIBEL, Associated Press – 5 days ago
JERUSALEM (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision-making was badly flawed as he oversaw a deadly Israeli naval raid on a Gaza-bound ship two years ago, according to a government report released Wednesday.
The harsh findings were an embarrassing assessment of Netanyahu's handling of a military operation that sent Israel's relations with once-close ally Turkey plummeting and drew widespread international condemnation.
But it is unlikely to hurt his domestic standing. Netanyahu is popular and leads a powerful coalition that controls three-fourths of parliament's seats. Moreover, many Israelis think naval commandos opened fire in self-defense after pro-Palestinian activists attacked them and believe Israel has a right to keep ships from reaching the Gaza Strip, which is controlled by Hamas militants.
Eight Turks and a Turkish-American were killed on May 31, 2010, after the commandos stormed the Mavi Marmara, which had set out from Turkey at the head of a six-vessel flotilla trying to breach Israel's Gaza blockade.
"Substantive and significant deficiencies were discovered in the decision-making process ... that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu led and oversaw," State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss wrote in the 153-page report.
"The prime minister's decision-making process took place without orderly, coordinated and documented team work, even though the senior political, military and intelligence ranks were aware that the Turkish flotilla was different from other flotillas," it said.
What?
How many people are dead in Iraq as a direct consequence of the Bush administrations invasion? Oh did you say no one is sure or Lancet Reports get swept under the rug...yet our MSM keeps showing images of who is being killed in Syria and how many have been "massacred" ...oh yeah when the U.S. kills or creates and environment for decades long anger to run wild those "massacred" are referred to as "collateral damage"

> GPI: 3.192
> Political terror scale: 4.5
> Access to small arms: 5
> Relations with neighboring countries: 2
> Likelihood of violent demonstrations: 4
In 2012, Iraq became the least peaceful country in the Middle East, the IEP’s least peaceful region. With the body count at 4,087 civilian deaths this past year, the Iraqi people are subject to high levels of political terror and atrocities from organized internal conflict. Iraq also has one of the most dysfunctional governments in the world and has a high level of perceived corruption. Last December, Tariq al-Hashemi, Iraq’s vice president and most senior Sunni Arab politician, was arrested for allegedly funding attacks against the government. Opponents of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki accused him of using the judicial process against al-Hashemi to consolidate power. As a positive, many Iraqis were able to return home in 2011, reducing the number of refugees and internally displaced people to 9.4% of the population.

9. Israel
> GPI: 2.842
> Political terror scale: 4
> Access to small arms: 3
> Relations with neighboring countries: 4
> Likelihood of violent demonstrations: 3
Peace continues to be a problem in Israel, even though its ranking has decreased in the past three years. The most pressing issues are its political terror scale and relations with neighboring countries, both of which have a 4 out of 5, nearly the worst possible score. That means that a large part of the population experiences political violence and that Israel has open conflicts with neighboring countries. According to the IEP, “Israel remains in a formal ‘state of war’ with its northern neighbours, Syria and Lebanon, and relations with much of the Arab world and Iran remained highly strained.” Paired with this conflict, Israel has the least peaceful score for heavy weapons and military capability
10. Pakistan

I was just looking for Solomon's voting record on anti Palestinian legislation etc to see what his record is and of course since he is new not much of a record yet. Will look more. This is what Glenn Greenwald has to say about Solomon
link to salon.com
"Norman Solomon
The long-time anti-war activist, co-founder of the great media criticism group FAIR, and author of “Made Love, Got War: Close Encounters with America’s Warfare State” – a critique of America’s decades of militarism and the role which its media plays in perpetuating it — is about as close to a perfect Congressional candidate as it gets. He’s written 11 other books, including “War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death”: the title speaks for itself. He’s running in the heavily Democratic California district being vacated by the retiring Rep. Lynn Woolsey. A newly released poll from an independent Democratic pollster shows him with a serious chance to win (there is an open primary in June, and the top two candidates, regardless of party affiliation, will then face each other in a November run-off).
In 2002 and 2003, Solomon led three trips to Iraq to try to avert the war (trips that included former and current members of Congress), and was one of the most widely featured media voices during that period opposing the attack on moral, legal and prudential grounds. Though he was an Obama delegate to the 2008 DNC convention, here’s what he told us about President Obama’s civil liberties record, including the Awlaki assassination and the President’s signing of the indefinite detention bill (NDAA):
I am opposed to the expansion of White House authority to detain without charge or assassinate on presidential order. Here we have President Obama extending presidential power even beyond Bush. Many had expected Obama – a constitutional law professor – to rein in presidential authority, but that hasn’t happened. This is not the country we believe in. I would have voted no on NDAA, vehemently explaining my vote in a wide range of public venues. As for the Holder speech, it was deservedly mocked by Stephen Colbert: That “due process” doesn’t have to be a “judicial process” — just any “process that you do.”
Regarding the Obama war on whistleblowers, WikiLeaks and the treatment of Bradley Manning, Solomon proudly touted the vigorous support he’s received from Manning supporter Daniel Ellsberg, who lives in his district, telling us: “The Obama administration has prosecuted more whistle-blowers than all previous presidents combined. That is sad.” He added:
I was outraged but not surprised to see so much of mainstream media focused more on Julian Assange and the “rightness” of WikiLeaks’ release of documents, rather than the explosive revelations about U.S. overseas abuses (war crimes, interfering in the judicial processes of democratic countries, etc.) contained in those documents. I was appalled to see the literally “naked” mistreatment of Bradley Manning. In Congress, I intend to speak out for the due process rights of all, including those being tarnished as traitors and terrorist-abettors by the right wing. Dan Ellsberg was called every name in the book and was prosecuted – but now he’s widely seen as an American hero.
Solomon demands diplomacy, not threats of military force, to resolve the current disputes with Iran. He decries the lack of criminal prosecutions for Wall Street defrauders and Bush torturers as a violation of the rule of law: “I thoroughly reject the convenient notion that we can’t look forward if we are also looking back to prosecute official crimes committed in the previous administration. On the contrary, our nation cannot move forward unless we address the crimes and abuses of the past.” He supports the legalization of marijuana, same-sex marriage,”significant” military cuts, and vocally opposed the Wall Street bailout before it happened. Simply on principle, he has refused to take a dime of corporate PAC money or accept contributions from lobbyists.
When it comes to Congressional candidates, it just doesn’t get any better than Norman Solomon. If you have any residual doubt, just look at this remarkable 2007 TV appearance he did on CNN with Glenn Beck, which he wrote about here, when he used the opportunity to detail and denounce the effect of corporate ownership of America’s establishment media (including CNN). He’s been doing this for 30 years and there’s zero chance he will change or compromise any of it if he wins. I can’t even imagine what it’d be like to have Norman Solomon in Congress, but I’d certainly like to see it. You can — and, I hope, will — support his campaign here."

Keep in mind that as a signatory to the Non Proliferation Treaty that Iran has the right to enrich uranium up to 20% for peaceful purposes. That the International Atomic Energy Agency has not found any verifiable evidence to prove that Iran is enriching beyond the legal limit permitted as a signatory to the NPT. Also keep in mind that the very nation pushing the U.S. and other nations to stand behind unsubstantiated claims about Iran is Israel the very nation who sits on huge stockpiles of nuclear biological and chemical weapons and has and continues to refuse to sign the Non Proliferation Treaty and open up to inspections by the IAEA. That the last President to demand that Israel open up to inspections was President Kennedy

(NB:Ironically, AIPAC’s deliberate corruption of the U.S. Congress and political system has always been a far greater threat to America than Syria.) And, indeed, the Russia-armed Syrians may have posed a threat to Israel and its ongoing expansion into Palestinian-owned territory. But this was a threat to Israel, never a threat to the United States, although U.S. leaders have spoken and spent, and still speak and spend as if the Syrian marines — if there are any — were soon going to splash ashore along the Hamptons’ beaches and ruin the holidays of many cocaine-addled but campaign-contributing Hollywood celebrities.
Given the reliable ability of Israel and its U.S. fifth column to determine and control the content of U.S. policy in the Islamic world, the ersatz Syrian threat remained front and center until the Arab Spring unleashed a fatal dementia that is likely to destroy Israel and embroil the United States and its allies in a losing clash of civilizations with the Islamic world. This fatal dementia can be found in the words and — to give them the benefit of the doubt — the thoughts of Mrs. Clinton, Obama, Rice, McCain, Cameron, and Graham that assert the Arab Spring ensures the installation of secular democracy across the Arab and Islamic worlds. Although Islamic parties have won all of the elections since the Tunisian regime fell — and Egyptians are poised to choose between Islamists on the one side, and the army and Mubarak‘s assistant tyrants on the other — Mrs. Clinton still insists that secular democracy is on the march. And it is, but only in the reality-proof brains of the Secretary of State and other of our Ivy-League educated (?) political and media leaders.
As the Syrian civil war lengthens and deepens as the result of the support of U.S.-Western interventionists for the Saudis’ funding and arming of the mujahedin already in Syria and those on the way there form other battle fronts, we will no doubt here more lies about the Syrian threat to the United States. We also will hear more about the Syrian threat to Israel, but what once was a lie now will be the truth as Mrs. Clinton and company — in their doctrinaire, Marxist-Leninist-like belief in democracy’s inevitable triumph — help to give to al-Qaeda and the Saudis what they could never attain alone; that is, the gradual entrenchment of militant Sunni regimes from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean.
And so U.S.-led Western intervention in Syria will bring what such intervention in the Muslim world always brings: government lies and deceit; quantum increases in dead Syrians; more U.S. taxpayer funds given to or wasted on Israelis and other foreigners; a deepening of Muslim hatred for the United States government; and the sharpening of the clash of civilizations which will cause Washington to further restrict civil liberties in a futile effort to stave off eventual defeat.
Maybe her vote for the Iraq war resolution is getting to her. Not holding my breath
Contact the Reps who are pushing for his release. Ask them to push for all documents that have to do with what Pollard actually did be released.

That's right release all of the documents having to do with exactly what Pollard did.
Always spinning Israel as a friendly country is also disingenuous. When one former CIA analyst after the next as well as other experts repeat that Israel's illegal activities have and continue to undermine U.S. National Security...this is clearly not "friendly" Hell they even mentioned this threat to U.S. National Security in the 9/11 report.
I believe part of the plea deal was that the documents that proved how serious Pollard's betrayal was were locked in a vault in D.C. never to be really examined or released. Release those documents so all can know just how serious is betrayal was. Damage assessment.....
With Max Boot and Kagan on Romney's foreign policy team who would need to even ask that question?

We can't make another mistake like the Iraq War.
This week marked the ninth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, and we once again see dangerous momentum for another irresponsible, unnecessary and costly war -- this time with Iran

Whoa Glenn Greenwald hits another one out of the morals park

"Today’s defense of President Obama from Andrew Sullivan is devoted to refuting Conor Friedersdorf’s criticism of Obama’s drone program. Says Sullivan:
What frustrates me about Conor’s position – and Greenwald’s as well – is that it kind of assumes 9/11 didn’t happen or couldn’t happen again, and dismisses far too glibly the president’s actual responsibility as commander-in-chief to counter these acts of mass terror.
This is exactly backward. I absolutely believe that another 9/11 is possible. And the reason I believe it’s so possible is that people like Andrew Sullivan — and George Packer — have spent the last decade publicly cheering for American violence brought to the Muslim world, and they continue to do so (now more than ever under Obama). Far from believing that another 9/11 can’t happen, I’m amazed that it hasn’t already, and am quite confident that at some point it will. How could any rational person expect their government to spend a full decade (and counting) invading, droning, cluster-bombing, occupying, detaining without charges, and indiscriminately shooting huge numbers of innocent children, women and men in multiple countries and not have its victims and their compatriots be increasingly eager to return the violence?
Just consider what one single, isolated attack on American soil more than a decade ago did to Sullivan, Packer and company: the desire for violence which that one attack 11 years ago unleashed is seemingly boundless by time or intensity. Given the ongoing American quest for violence from that one-day attack, just imagine the impact which continuous attacks over the course of a full decade must have on those whom we’ve been invading, droning, cluster-bombing, occupying, detaining without charges, and indiscriminately shooting."

NPR's Talk of the Nation has been having Aaron David Miller on regularly. His Iran war push is more subtle than other war pushers. But he clearly pushes
Great post Phil. I was just thinking about how many anti war folks MSNBC has let go..Keith, Cenk, Pat.
In the run up to the invasion I was glued to the news, internet, watching listening calling. Hoping that those concerned could stop those hell bent on invading Iraq. On Talk of the nation you could hear Former weapons inspector Scott Ritter, Diane Rehm had Dr. Brezinski others not in support. Questioning the validity of the intelligence. NPR would also have Gerecht, Micheal Rubin etc and those pushing the "pack of lies" on as well Of course Democracy Now had many guest on who were the voice of sanity. But when I would turn on the mainstream TV outlets it was Wolfowitz, Cheney, Rice, Bush, Feith, Ledeen, Gaffney, Kristol, David Frum repeating the "pack of lies" over and over and over again. Kept thinking about if you were an 8-6er and you had just one or two hours for the news and this was all you were watching what else could you think but there must be a need to invade Iraq. That is when I started going out into small coal mining towns that surround our university town of Athens Ohio to talk with Vets sitting in Moose lodges, VFW's in Glouster, Chauncey, Trimble Ohio. Heard Vet after Vet question the need for the invasion. Had many WWII and Korean war Vets weep about the reality of war and how they did not want to witness our youth sent off to a war that was questionable. One older Korean war Vet that I approached and talked with outside of the VFW in Chauncey Ohio fell back into the seat of his huge old American made Lincoln with tears steaming down his face when I asked him what he thought about what looked like the upcoming invasion of Iraq. Virgil Kittle in his jean overalls, all of his Korean Vet pins on his ball cap just sat there crying and telling me how 'wrong" this was even though he had been watching the MSM...he had questions. Bet you did not see Virgil on your TV screens.
What was also amazing to watch not be covered was all of the anti invasion marches in Wash D.C. (fall of 2002 , New York (Feb 2003) and across the country. Accumulativelyhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protests_against_the_Iraq_War millions of Americans marching, petitioning their government not to invade. Teachers, plumbers, family members pushing children in strollers, seniors in wheel chairs WWII ( I pushed a 92 year old WWII Vet in his wheel chair, Korean, Vietnam, Desert Storm Vets marched against the invasion. The march was led by 9/11 families against the invasion. My dear friends Bev and John Titus who lost their daughterhttp://www.sweetalicia.org/ (airline stewardess on United flight) on 9/11 led that march with other 9/11 families against the invasion. Did you see any of the MSM host interview these people in the run up to that bloody invasion?
Fuck the MSM fuck them they did not do their jobs and they are still not doing their jobs. They are partially responsible for the dead in Iraq, dead American soldiers. They did not do their jobs. They rolled over. As Bob Woodward who also rolled over called it "group think."
And now... in the push to attack Iran Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews etc have yet to have Flynt and Hillary Mann Leverett on to discuss Iran. Rachel Maddow etc repeat unsubstantiated claims about Iran. They let the American public know about how many have been killed in Syria "massacred". they show horrific images. But never report to Americans about how many Iraqi people have been killed, injured and displaced as a direct consequence of that bloody invasion.. you know "collateral damage" Fuck the MSM. Even though I watch to see what they are not covering
Thank goodness for the internet.
Morning Joe has been having Brzezinski on regularly. That morning when Dr. B took down Ignatius, Senor, Bernstein, Haass was especially delightful. I get the feeling Joe Scarborough is not in support of all of these interventionist activities
I have friends in Aspen to stay with. But if you want to attend the Aspen Institute conferences there are lots of great campgrounds in the area. You can make it an inexpensive stay. Beautiful hikes, food, people. When I lived in Aspen during the 70's I would get out of town just to see some not so pretty people. That was the era of EST/Forum/ Alive Tribe.....oy vey. Would argue endlessly with my extremely well off friends about their belief systems that all people choose their lives, their circumstances etc. Lots of blaming the victim mentality in Colorado during those days Also the era of summers at Windstar listening to Bucky Fuller, Ram Dass lecturing about how many of us are committed to social, political, humanitarian causes not because we will necessarily see results but because your conscience is guiding you..if you will only take the time to listen and follow
I don't think so.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit to Beijing for a Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit and looming implementation of the latest round of U.S. secondary sanctions against countries that continue buying oil from and doing other business with the Islamic Republic have once again focused the spotlight on Sino-Iranian relations. On that front, Americans, in particular, should read an Op Ed, “Sino-Iranian Ties Important,” published today in China Daily by Hua Liming, see here.
Hua is described in the bio line to his Op Ed as “a former ambassador to China and now a researcher at the China Institute of International Studies.” We had the good fortune to meet Ambassador Hua last year in Beijing, and found him to be one of the most experienced, most richly informed, and wisest people on Iranian affairs one could hope to know.
Aspen..Cheney's Wyoming..
Yep the neocons have basically taken over the Aspen Institute over the last several decades
The Aspen institute conferences are generally well worth attending. Have attended several over the last three decades. But the institute has definitely started leaning towards the war hawks over the years.
When the topic of Iran, Plame outing, who was allegedly selling weapons to ...Sibel Edmonds story comes up for me. She has written about Feith, Wolfowitz, Grossman allegedly being involved with selling weapons etc

"shining light" Where?
There was some Professor at Ohio State University who had done research on this some years ago "the wealthiest group by religion" Think she was slammed or her research was burned or something like that.
He would lose his spot as the VP
"I believe people want to marry Jews because we're successful (and we are overall the wealthiest group in the U.S. by religion). People want to get ahead, people want to get in with the in crowd."
Phil do you actually believe this? Does this happen in your world? When you say "I believe people want to marry Jews because we're successful" How many people have you asked this question who have been in this situation? Just your wife? And how do you define successful? In the traditional way? Accumulation of money?
This is such an interesting post.
"Biden is a social worker. Krein is an ear, nose and throat specialist at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia."
I mean really who ever heard of this "ear, nose and throat specialist" before this post?
"I believe people want to marry Jews because we're successful (and we are overall the wealthiest group in the U.S. by religion). People want to get ahead, people want to get in with the in crowd. Of the moderators of the Republican debates this year, most were Jewish media guys."
Doug I can't figure out whether Phil actually believes this or it is a joke. If he does believe it reeks of racism "people want to get in with the in crowd." Pathetic really. Demonstrates a deep elitism which Phil has given indication of before.
The moderator piece is true but what we know about NPR and other MSM outlets is that these high profile high paying positions are often given to Jews based on a "pervasive cronyism" in our MSM. Not that these individuals are more talented, more capable, just know people in the right places. If you examine closely who Terri Gross has on as guest having to do with politics, history, novels etc a disproportionate amount of her guest are Jewish. I firmly believe this is all about promoting her "tribe" not that these individuals are more knowledgeable etc. Just conscious or unconscious tribe promotion.
This take of Phil's that non Jews want to get into the tribe is just a bunch of hooey. How many people has he actually talked to about this non Jews marrying Jews their reasons etc.
And if you were really thinking someone was going to be climbing a social or cultural ladder it would be Howard Krein (who is this anyway) marrying one of Joe Biden's kids. Phil is dreaming about this one. But in the dream reeks racism and elitism
What social or cultural ladder would this young man be providing for Ashley Biden. Her father was a big name Senator, now the VP. I am with Annie...maybe they just love each other...or what social, political and cultural ladder could this young man be wanting to climb?
Hopefully they will be happy together!
. "I believe people want to marry Jews because we're successful (and we are overall the wealthiest group in the U.S. by religion). People want to get ahead, people want to get in with the in crowd. "
Phil surely you are joking. "the wealthiest group by religion" may be right but the rest is just silly.
What other Rep could directly undermine U.S. National Security by pushing for shutting down a deep investigation and trial into two top Aipac officials illegally accessing highly classified U.S. intelligence allegedly on Iran and walk away from her "waddling" unscathed?
Major scandal erupts involving Rep. Jane Harman, Alberto Gonzales and AIPAC
link to salon.com
"Here’s one crucial prong of the story:
Rep. Jane Harman , the California Democrat with a longtime involvement in intelligence issues, was overheard on an NSA wiretap telling a suspected Israeli agent that she would lobby the Justice Department to reduce espionage-related charges against two officials of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, the most powerful pro-Israel organization in Washington.
Harman was recorded saying she would “waddle into” the AIPAC case “if you think it’ll make a difference,” according to two former senior national security officials familiar with the NSA transcript.
In exchange for Harman’s help, the sources said, the suspected Israeli agent pledged to help lobby Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., then-House minority leader, to appoint Harman chair of the Intelligence Committee after the 2006 elections, which the Democrats were heavily favored to win.
Seemingly wary of what she had just agreed to, according to an official who read the NSA transcript, Harman hung up after saying, “This conversation doesn’t exist.”
That’s not even the most significant part. Back in October, 2006, Time reported that the DOJ and FBI were investigating whether Harman and AIPAC ”violated the law in a scheme to get Harman reappointed as the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee” and “the probe also involves whether, in exchange for the help from AIPAC, Harman agreed to help try to persuade the Administration to go lighter on the AIPAC officials caught up in the ongoing investigation.” So that part has been known since 2006."
How did she walk away from this? $ and influence? Was the deal that she would leave quietly?
Have always wondered if Harman was asked to leave. That charges or investigations into her actively undermining U.S. national security...would be dropped

Too bad the same group of individuals pushing for the traitor Jonathon Pollards release do not push President Obama to pressure Israel to get back to the internationally recognized borders and stop building illegal settlements. Too bad this same group is not spending their time pressuring Israel to abide by UN resolutions and internationally accepted borders and to sign the NPT. Wonder when Barney Frank will write a letter like that?
Too much influence on U.S. foreign policy.

"Clinton states that Madeleine Albright, Sandy Berger, and George Tenet were all "adamantly opposed" to letting Pollard out of prison.[64]
"Former FBI and navy lawyer M.E. "Spike" Bowman, top legal adviser to navy intelligence at the time, and with intimate knowledge, of the Pollard case, has issued a detailed critique of the case for clemency, asserting "Because the case never went to trial, it is difficult for outside observers to understand the potential impact and complexity of the Pollard betrayal. There is no doubt that Pollard was devoted to Israel. However, the extent of the theft and the damage was far broader and more complex than evidenced by the single charge and sentence."[86] Bowman wrote that Pollard "was neither a U.S. nor an Israeli patriot. He was a self-serving, gluttonous character seeking financial reward and personal gratification."[86]
In September 2011, Vice President Joe Biden was reported by the New York Times to have told a group of rabbis that, “President Obama was considering clemency, but I told him, ‘Over my dead body are we going to let him out before his time. If it were up to me, he would stay in jail for life.'”[87] A few days later, Biden denied having used those words although he acknowledged that the sentiment attributed to him was, in fact, his position on the issue.[88]
Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has expressed support for releasing Pollard.["
James Woolsey, Kissenger, Lawrence Korb support releasing him. Interesting to see who is supporting the release, who is not.
The Pollard release website:

There have been many Rep letters sent in support of Pollards release over the years. Keep in mind President Bush 43 rejected this bad idea.
RELEASE THOSE DOCUMENTS HAVING TO DO WITH THE DAMAGE DONE TO U.S. NATIONAL SECURITY BY POLLARDS TRAITOROUS ACTIVITIES LOCKED IN D.C. VAULTS. That is what should be released
Frank:
""The justification of this is the humanitarian one and the notion that the American justice system should be a fair one," Frank said. "We believe that clemency after 25 years for the offenses of Jonathan Pollard would do that.
"My own hope is that if the president would do this, it would contribute to the political climate within the democracy of Israel and would enhance the peace process."
What peace process?
Folks should be contacting their Reps and Obama demanding that if there is really any serious consideration of releasing Pollard those documents having to do with Pollards traitorous activities that were never submitted in the trial will be released. So that that our Reps, the Justice system, the public really knows exactly what damage his activities did to U.S. national security
