  • Origins of a golden shower
    • ROHA- "Come to your senses and make me your king."

      Long live the Comma King!

    • TOKYOBK- "He is not helping things by going to war with much of the intelligence community, which by the way, makes it seem more credible that he feels the need to protect Putin at all costs.

You have turned reality on its head. The CIA/Deep State is undertaking a color revolution type coup against Donald Trump in furtherance of their anti-Russian war agenda. But this is something which you support, so you fit the facts (or lack thereof) to support your biases. It is a sign of the times that many of those who label themselves "liberal" are now supporting a Deep State delegitimization to force Trump to continue the empire's anti-Putin/Russia agenda, or, failing that, an unconstitutional coup. The "intel" is a joke which, nonetheless, has the imprimatur of the intel community. As such, it may be grounds for impeachment. The CIA has declared war on Trump and Trump will either cave or strike back. We enter tumultuous times. A couple of quotes.

"In unprecedented fashion, what we have in this instance are those same deep state actors, working in conjunction with the US liberal establishment, currently engaged in a coup designed to destroy the Trump presidency – if not before it begins then certainly soon after, with the prospect of impeachment proceedings against him already being mooted in Washington circles." (John Wight)

"All of the above further confirms to me what I have been saying over the past weeks: if Trump ever makes it into the White House (I write ‘if’ because I think that the Neocons are perfectly capable of assassinating him), his first priority should be to ruthlessly crack down as hard as he legally can against those in the US “deep state” (which very much includes the media) who have now declared war on him. I am sorry to say that, but it will be either him or them – one of the parties here will be crushed." (The Saker)

  • Fury at Azaria verdict is Israel's Trump moment
    • SIBIRIAK- "What do you call that very large portion of the “aid” for Israel that goes straight to into the hands of U.S. corporations?"

I would call it a subsidy to the armaments industry. This is one reason why support for Israel is strong among those corporations which benefit from this ongoing arrangement.

  • Jared Kushner fired me over Israel ten years ago
    • YONIFALIC- "I suppose that one could risk accusation of antisemitism to discuss the AZC and AIPAC (correctly in my view) in terms of a Zionist-mobilized transnational Jewish plutocracy, whose members found organizations in each state where they reside and whose government they wish to manipulate."

Indeed! God forbid we should discuss power: who has it, who seeks it, and how they get it.

    • KALITHEA- "Zionism is a crime and all who further it are complicit therefore they should not occupy a position where they can give Zionism legitimacy."

Any thoughts on imperialism as a crime? Or is the empire blemish free except for Israel? And which is the greater evil, Israel or the empire? And how would this relate to who is acceptable to be President?

    • PHIL- "My interactions with Jared were limited, but they don’t give me hope about his ability to achieve peace in the Middle East."

What makes you think that he has any desire to achieve peace in the Middle East? How do his views compare to Haim Saban and Sheldon Adelson? Does he want to bomb Iran? Is he Russophobic?

  • The truck attack that killed four Israeli soldiers in Jerusalem was not 'terrorism'
    • JACKDAW- "...most other sane, politically aware people, agree that Israel’s involvement in Libya, Syria and Yemen amounts to zero."

Let us begin by noting that I was responding to your comment regarding Arab war crimes and rank hypocrisy. I criticized the Islamist terrorists in Libya and Syria, and the Saudis in Yemen, along with their US/NATO supporters. Countries, I might add, that enjoy warm relations with Israel, the US in particular. I am under the impression that Israel supported the imperial intervention in Libya, the US/Saudi aggression against Yemen, and the efforts to overthrow Assad by these NATO backed terrorists. Am I wrong? Also, Israel has been directly involved in Syria by providing medical treatment for Nusra fighters who are then sent back into Syria. Also, Israel has bombed inside of Syria on multiple occasions. This, in addition to Israeli special ops forces inside Syria alongside NATO special ops forces. Finally, Israel provided significant financial support to the Islamist terrorists through the purchase of Syrian oil from them via the Turkish connection. You dispute any of this? No need for you to imagine Jews under my bed, I'm not that kind of guy.

    • JACKDAW- "For an anti-Zionist to ignore Arab war crimes is low rank hypocrisy."

Peace, my brother! I join you in condemning the Arab Islamist terrorists who have brought so much suffering to Syria! And to the retrograde Saudis who are bombing the defenseless Yemenis with US support! And who can forget the unprovoked carnage in Libya caused by Islamist extremists backed by NATO! Like you, I condemn Israel's support for these groups and their de facto alliance with the extremist Gulf Monarchies! Keep the faith, bro'.

  • In 'breathtaking' UN vote, Obama changed his policy on Israeli settlements, making them a war crime -- Finkelstein
    • MOOSER- "I don’t think they will have any problem with Trump."

Then why is the CIA led Deep State engaging in such blatant and unprecedented delegitimization of President Elect Trump? The CIA is a champion of the 99%? Hot for single payer health care and the observance of international law by the empire? They are seriously concerned that this buffoon is a Manchurian candidate? Take off the clown suit Mooser, if not for Trump's stated desire to avoid regime change and get along with Russia, why is the CIA/Deep State so opposed to him? Seriously, cut the comedy and answer the question. Answer Sibiriak as well.

    • MOOSER- "I kid you not. “You’re fired”.

Would you have preferred "We came, we saw, he died. Ha ha ha."?

    • MOOSER- "This seems to be the upshot of the presser: “Trump Says ‘I Think It Was Russia’ That Hacked the Democrats”

You link to the New York Times? You link to the official newspaper of the Deep State? The newspaper which establishes the official party line? Besides, I don't give a you-know-what what Trump says, particularly when the NYT spins his intentional ambiguities. Compared to Israel, how much influence on US policies and US elections do you think Russia has? The whole point which I and others are trying to get across is that the Deep State, led by the CIA, is engaging in an unprecedented campaign of delegitimization against Trump in order to pursue an established war agenda. Apparently, the imperial warmongers are worried that Trump isn't acceptable warrior material and needs to be coerced into action. Finally, I will take Julian Assange over James Clapper and the New York Times any day. Not even close.

    • ANNIE- "hey keith, have you seen the latest? alleged videos of prostitutes performing golden showers for Trump?"

And yet some folks deny that this villification is unprecedented. What does it take? Sure, Trump is a jerk, but he hasn't killed anyone yet. He doesn't have a "kill list." Why can't some folks hold the Democrats accountable for their actions? Hells Bells, on inauguration day Trump may be confronted with hostilities with Russia initiated by the Democrats. George H.W. Bush promised that NATO wouldn't expand even "one inch" eastward if Russia stood aside as Germany re-united. Bill Clinton broke that promise and expanded NATO eastward even as he turned it into a US controlled out of area mercenary strike force. Now, what does Obama do? Authorizes NATO war games "Atlantic Resolve" to coincide with the inauguration! This failure to acknowledge Democrat warmongering does not speak well for all of the Democrat cadres. And that is exactly what they are: party loyalists. Getting back to "Atlantic Resolve," this is serious, not some joke. A quote and a link.

"The NATO war preparation against Russia, ‘Operation Atlantic Resolve’, is in full swing. 2,000 US tanks will be sent in coming days from Germany to Eastern Europe, and 1,600 US tanks is deployed to storage facilities in the Netherlands. At the same time, NATO countries are sending thousands of soldiers in to Russian borders.

According to US Army Europe, 4,000 troops and 2,000 tanks will arrive in three US transport ships to Germany next weekend. From Bremerhaven, US troops and huge amount of military material, will be transported to Poland and other countries in Central and Eastern Europe.

USA is sending to Russian borders 3rd Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division. Overall, more than 2,500 pieces of cargo are shipped to Germany, where those will be unloaded in the period January 6-8. US military material and troops will continue to Poland by rail and military convoy’s. Massive US military deployment should be ready by January 20." (Michel Chossudovsky)

    • MOOSER- "Anything he does will be much worse than what Hilary would have done."

Glad to see that you are your typical open-minded self! Lord knows, you have held her accountable for her past misdeeds. Now if we could just get you to remember that the Princess of Darkness spells her first name with two "l"s everything would be just hunky dory.

    • MOOSER- "Especially after Trump did everything a person needs to do to establish his legitimacy for the Presidency, too."

According to the Constitution, winning the election in the Electoral College establishes legitimacy. You have a problem with that? Join the effort to amend the Constitution to eliminate the Electoral College. You obviously have deep affection for the Princess of Darkness. I know it is tough not being able to count on new wars and destabilizations like we have had for the last 8 years. Don't despair, perhaps Trump will wind up making war like a Democrat and you can once again rest easy.

      MOOSER- "Oh, you bet, “unprecedented”!

You recall a previous instance where the CIA claimed that the President Elect was a Manchurian candidate? Where his election was a consequence of Russian meddling? Where questioning the CIA's assertion was tantamount to treason? This is a very serious situation, not some joke. Hating Trump is one thing, jumping on the CIA/Soros delegitimization bandwagon quite another.

    • JUST- "You appear to be hoping for the best with Trump, Sibiriak."

As nearly as I can tell, Sibiriak, like me, is primarily hoping that Trump will be less of a warmonger than Hillary has demonstrably been and would almost assuredly continue to be as President. But it is not just one person, is it? This absolutely unprecedented campaign to delegitimize Trump strongly suggests that the Deep State remains committed to war and destabilization as a means to secure global hegemony during the critical next four years. Their small window of opportunity is rapidly closing and these warmongering risk takers seem determined to continue imperial aggression at all costs. I believe that we are at an extremely critical point in time, the survival of the species in question. At the least, the pressure on Trump to go along with Deep State warmongering is enormous. Trump as a white knight? P.T. Barnum to the rescue? Nobody believes that. A pre-election quote from distinguished economist Michael Hudson pretty much sums up my opinion:

"I believe Hillary’s the greater evil, not Trump, because Trump is incompetent and doesn’t have the staff around him, or the political support that Hillary has."
" And that’s what America needs. America needs an ineffective president. That’s much better than an effective president that’s going to go to war with Russia, that’s going to push for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, that’s going to protect Wall Street, and that’s going to oppose neoliberal austerity. I would much rather have an ineffective president than someone who’s going to do these bad things that I fear is going to come from Hillary and the Democratic Party. It’s a counter-revolution, not a revolution."
      (Michael Hudson)

    • ROHA- "If he lasts that long, without some Lone Crazed Gunman (TM) taking him out."

I think that is a distinct possibility. So does Trump, which is why he will have his own additional security.

ROHA- "And by then they might have been able to start a war with Russia. They are trying hard enough."

Are they ever! The warmongers don't want to take "no" for an answer. Some folks may think you and I are joking. We aren't. I have never seen the like of this before. I have provided a link to Paul Craig Roberts discussing this very issue on the Keiser report.

    • SIBIRIAK- "Across the board, liberals and progressives opposed Bush and the war and enthusiastically embraced the notion that WMD lie was a lie."

That is exactly correct! Democrats oppose Republican wars and are not fooled by the bogus pretexts. Democrats mostly support Democratic wars and interventions which are magically transformed into humanitarian obligations. That is why I say that when a Democrat makes war there is no opposition. Look at what happened in the former Yugoslavia when the US/Germany/NATO dismembered that country. The propaganda was overwhelming and still believed by "progressives" today. It is easy to believe what is convenient to believe, and self-deception is the rule, not the exception.

    • SIBIRIAK- "Still, this FAKE FACT– that Putin hacked the DNC, Podesta et al , stole the U.S. election, and virtually installed his preferred candidate– will now be cemented into American mythology...."

Perhaps. Remember, that all of these "intelligence" agencies are currently headed by Obama appointees who are part of what appears to be a form of color revolution coup attempt. After January 20th, Trump will be in a much stronger position. What, if anything, he will do remains to be seen.

    • MOOSER- "I can’t understand how anybody can be surprised by Trump ‘folding’."

Not at all like Hillary who would escalate in Syria and confront Putin come Hell or high water. At least with Hillary, you know you are getting more war and can plan accordingly.

    • SIBIRIAK- "Trump folds:"

Trump is a deal maker in a very difficult position. He needs to employ considerable ambiguity to preclude the solid beltway opposition from stomping him into the ground. As long as he isn't calling for a no-fly zone or retaliating against Putin, we may have dodged a bullet. Besides, expecting Donald Trump to stand on principle even if he could is unrealistic. Instead of the Princess of Darkness we got P.T. Barnum. Be grateful. Also, surely we are all aware that the global empire is mostly run by the Deep State, deviations from course relatively slight in any event.

    • SIBIRIAK- "That depends which "Israel Lobby" thesis you are referring to."

More importantly, it depends upon how you define "The Lobby." Most folks identify the Lobby as AIPAC, yet lump in a lot of non-AIPAC support. Are Haim Saban and Sheldon Adelson part of the Lobby? Or are they American Jewish Zionist fat-cats who support Israel? How about the Military-Industrial complex which does a lot of business thanks to Israel? If you lump all of these together, the power is enormous, but strictly speaking is it a lobby? I think it is more accurate to consider AIPAC as a relatively powerful lobby that is but one feature of an extremely power Jewish Zionist network.

Furthermore, as you point out, core US interests are defined by the US elites. And, I would add, may not be objectively rational. Jewish Zionists are disproportionately represented among the elites, and are an integral part of the imperial deep state. If, as I maintain, Jewish Zionist success and power has been facilitated by Zionist based kinship, then the maintenance of this kinship support through support of Israel would be seen as a core interest of a significant part of the imperial elite. Seen this way, Lobby power derives primarily from US elite support for Israel and Zionism, the dependence of the Democratic Party (the Republicans, too?) on Jewish Zionist money a critical factor, along with a highly biased media. Therefore, support for Israel among the elites is sufficiently organic that Israel needs to be considered an integral part of empire.

    • MOOSER- "You are right, the uncertainty of Trump is way better than the nuclear war Hilary Clinton promised she would wage during her First One Hundred Seconds."

You are in deep denial concerning the nature of the Democrats in general and Hillary Clinton in particular. De facto apologetics for the Princess of Darkness is de facto support for our brutal, militaristic empire. "Liberal" Democrats who never held the Democrats accountable for their horrible actions enabled the rightward drift of the Democratic Party which paved the way for the election of Trump. Even now the warmongering establishment is attempting to paint Putin and Russia as an existential threat. And you go along with this insanity? Shame on you! Seriously.

    • SIBIRIAK- "Strange bedfellows is one thing; this is political bestiality."

Incredible, isn't it? Liberal "ideas" nothing but a thin veneer to hide imperial aggression and group loyalty. Pilpul reigns supreme! I received an e-mail this morning from Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility warning of the danger when Trump gets his hands on the nuclear codes! And, of course, nuclear weapons are serious danger. But Trump more dangerous than Hillary? What universe do these people live in? The trouble with these groups jumping on the anti-Trump bandwagon to raise funds is that they have aligned themselves with the worst group of warmongers I have ever seen, hence, bear more than a little responsibility for the way things are and how they will be resolved. At least on this one issue, Trump should be supported, not attacked.

As for those folks who trust the intelligence agencies and the MSM over Julian Assange, they need to get their heads screwed on straight. Julian Assange's record is unblemished whereas the CIA continually engages in misinformation and covert operations. I hardly need to dwell on the current status of the MSM as agents of imperial propaganda. In this regard, I highly recommend "The CIA as Organized Crime" by Douglas Valentine.

    • NORMAN FINKELSTEIN- "If Schumer had been Senate majority leader and Hillary had been elected, they would have killed it. Of course they would have killed it. I have no doubt about it."

I concur with Finkelstein on this. If Hillary had won, Obama would not have abstained. Stated another way, you can thank Donald Trump for Obama's last minute attempt to salvage something positive in his deplorable Middle East policy. Not that Trump desired this, of course, but that internal strife among the elites can occasionally have desirable consequences.

As for "courage," credit where credit is due. Trump's tweet praising Putin's moderation following Obama's anti-Russian propaganda involving Russia "hacking" the election, along with Obama expelling 35 Russian diplomats has resulted in a whole chorus of Red-baiting "Liberals" accusing Trump of treason. Trump may be bad but his neocon neoliberal critics are even worse! A couple of quotes and links.

"Obama has formally accused Moscow of interfering in the US elections on behalf of Donald Trump. These are serious allegations. Whereas the sanctions are directed against Russia, the ultimate intent is to undermine the legitimacy of president-elect Donald Trump and his foreign policy stance in relation to Moscow.
The central objective of this project against Trump is to ensure the continuity of the Neocons’ foreign policy agenda geared towards global warfare and Worldwide economic conquest, which has dominated the US political landscape since September 2001."
      (Michel Chossudovsky)

"When President Obama expelled Russian diplomats over the hysterical and unproven accusation of “hacking the election” on December 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin refused to be drawn into a petty squabble, saying he would delay any response until Donald Trump assumed office. Instead Putin’s response was to issue an invitation to American diplomats and their families in Moscow to join the official holiday celebrations in the Kremlin.

Then came the shock from President Elect Trump, in the form of a tweet (what else) heard round the world that read: “Great move on delay (by V. Putin) – I always knew he was very smart!”

And to be sure that everyone saw it, Trump “pinned” the tweet which means it is the first thing seen by viewers of his account. This was a first use of “pinning” for Trump. And to be doubly sure, he posted it on Instagram as well. This was no spontaneous midnight outburst but a very deliberate action taken on Friday noon, December 30.
The implications of this move are breathtaking. Trump treated Putin as his ally. And he treated Obama and the bipartisan foreign policy elite as his adversaries. This makes perfect sense if Trump’s desire is to reign in the War Party and to strive for a New Détente."
      (John Walsh)

  • Terrorism: How the Israeli state was won
  • Why Obama waited 8 years to take on Netanyahu
    • MOOSER- "Okay, I get it, everything Trump and the Republicans want to do is Hilary and Obama’s fault."

Obviously you don't get it. Hillary and Trump are part of the same system. The only significant difference is that Hillary is a proven warmonger who surrounded herself with neocons and was itching to confront Russia/Putin in an attempt to secure imperial hegemony prior to a restructuring of the imperial financial system. Trump will be a disaster, Hillary would have been a catastrophe. Being a de facto liberal (Democratic) imperialist is roughly comparable to being a liberal Zionist. Reality is what it is and no amount of clever or humorous phraseology will change that.

    • ECHINOCOCCUS- "Anyway, when you come across anything that the Dims are not already doing that the Pukes announced they would do, gimme a ring."

Right you are, and it is somewhat enlightening to see these diehard Democrats denying the reality of the Democratic record. Mooser, for example, can't deal with the reality that the Democrats competitive advantage in attracting oligarch funding is to more efficiently provide for the fat-cats. He keeps pissing and moaning about the demise of the ACA and anticipated attack on Social Security apparently unaware that the ACA was an industry developed proposal meant to divert the voters from the much preferred single payer alternative which Hillary buried. Furthermore, privatizing Social Security has been a bipartisan effort. Bill Clinton was all set to go on this but backtracked to shore up liberal support to fight impeachment. Below is a link discussing this.

"Simpson-Bowles, for those of you who forgot, was part of a long line of Democratic moves over the past 8 years that would lead the way for privatizing the fund. I previously documented this issue for Counterpunch on September 30 and stand by my reporting despite claims from the pwogs that this is a conspiracy theory.

Second of course is Robin Blackburn’s classic essay How Monica Lewinsky Saved Social Security, which retrieved from the Clinton archive primary documents from the beginning of the effort dating back to 1998. Following his destruction of Welfare, Bubba had decided to set his sights on retirement “entitlements” with the aid of his Robert Rubin-Larry Summers fiscal brain trust. Of course, when the intern with that magic blue dress became a national punchline, he was forced to pivot to the left to shore up his anti-privatization base as the GOP hounds began to circle for the kill. Nevertheless, the effort has been simmering on the back burner for the past two decades and remains tenable. Obama has put in place as custodian of the Social Security trust fund Charles P. Blahous III, who supported privatizing under George W. Bush, and manipulated the chained Consumer Price Index, used to generate yearly coast of living adjustments, so to sow enough dissent and cause people to think the system no longer works. The blade of the guillotine only needs be released at this point, all that is needed has been prepared." (Andrew Stewart)

  • Kerry hasn't cleared his throat, and Trump and Hoyer are jumping down it
    • Something which hasn't been discussed but which seems important to me is the extent to which Trump has used the social media to get his message covered in an overtly hostile main stream media. His tweets become news. Is this a departure from past practices? What are the full implications of communicating policy through Twitter?

As an aside, a book I found interesting is "Revolution in the Age of Social Media" by Linda Herrera. Professor Herrera is a social anthropologist at the University of Illinois specializing in the Middle East and North Africa. She traveled to Egypt during the Arab Spring to provide first hand knowledge of the use of social media to instigate the uprising. The "We Are All Khaled Said" Facebook page that issued the call for revolution was administered by Wael Ghonim, a Google marketing executive.

    • BROADSIDE- "Wrong again, Keith. Obama has NEVER controlled the narrative. He’s the most pro-Israel president of all time."

Are you not aware that you have just contradicted yourself? Yes, his is the most pro-Israel administration, yet he is depicted as resisting Israeli settlement expansion, this abstention from vetoing the resolution a profile in courage. If that isn't controlling the narrative to obscure the facts on the ground, then what is? Here we have a demonstrable warmonger lauded as a peacemaker. And yes, Obama has a huge role in the success of brand Obama. If it was solely a media phenomenon, then Hillary would have been seen as a female Obama and would have won the election with her massive media support. It was Obama's decision to abstain, not the media's.

    • GINGERSHOT- "Truly a transformational and revolutionary American President. What an amazing day"

It is easy to believe what is convenient to believe, and self-deception is the rule not the exception.

    • “This simple act of omission–refusing to use the veto–may turn out to be Obama’s enduring legacy on Mideast peace.”

Obama is a magician! We have been at war the entire 8 years of his administration, we continue to occupy Iraq, we destroyed Libya and Syria, we are helping Saudi Arabia destroy Yemen, yet by not vetoing a toothless Security Council resolution, Obama rescues his peacemaker image! Nobody controls the narrative like President Smoothie. Not even close. Slick Willie was good, but not like this.

    • PHIL/ANNIE- "So nothing has changed in 34 years. And for five decades US presidents of both parties have opposed Israeli colonization."

Yes, for five decades US Presidents have opposed Israeli colonization by funding it. So yes, nothing has changed in 34 years. Why do so many commenters continue to believe that words speak louder than actions? This is President Smoothie engaging in hypocritical symbolism to bolster his legacy. Nothing has fundamentally changed.

  • Desperate Netanyahu lectures Obama about US responsibility to veto UN resolution
    • "The proposed resolution is “anti-Israel” and it’s “bad, bad for Israel, bad for the United States, and bad for peace.”

This whole Israeli reaction is mostly staged to give the impression that this resolution is somehow actually significant. This is akin to the staged farce when the Israeli army removed the "settlers" from Gaza. Pure theater.

  • Wikileaks emails did a tremendous public service, revealing how government works
    • BANDOLERO- "It’s logical: just have a look who is donating the Pulitzer Prizes."

That is exactly correct. The purpose of all of these awards is both to reward and provide gravitas to those who on their own advance the goals and objectives of those sponsoring these awards. It is a sham with a purpose.

    • PHIL /JAMES- "It is even arguable that the leaked emails did not hurt Clinton politically."

I doubt that the Wikileaks emails had a significant impact on the election results. I suspect that there is poll data showing this, but that it is not being publicized because it would conflict with the "Putin hacked the election" meme.

  • Hell just froze over: the New York Times runs an article saying Zionism is racist
    • ROHA- "Astonishingly little, actually."

      I was being facetious.

    • ROHA- "Actually, there is a damned good argument to the effect that you (in the same sense of “this stream of consciousness/first person point of view”) have always existed, or, at least, if time had a beginning, existed from the beginning of time."

Supported by a ton of empirical data, no doubt.

    • SIBIRIAK- "The critical point is that reality can be distorted through omission of truth as well as direct statement of falsehoods."

Indeed, most propaganda depends upon lies of omission, the myth of never-ending Jewish persecution a classic example. All information must be evaluated in context.

SIBIRIAK- "In the final analysis, therefore, it does come down to content which can be empirically evaluated, not intent, which is much more difficult to ascertain."

And once the content is evaluated, it is useful to infer intent when there is sufficient data available. It is very useful to be aware of what a person's or organization's objectives are in relating to that person or organization. Actions speak louder than words and patterns are discernible. It is useful to be aware that we live in an amoral empire which utilizes humanitarian pretexts for imperial interventions. One must be able do discern patterns of behavior within which individual instances may be evaluated. Viewed in isolation, much behavior can be easily misrepresented.

    • CATALAN- "You can denote something correctly and have antisemitic intent."

Yes, but since we are not mind readers, an anti-Semitic intent must be inferred. Furthermore, the inference of an anti-Semitic intent frequently says more about the person making the inference than the actual comment itself. One particular commenter immediately comes to mind.

    • HOPHMI- "Every minority group contain folks like this; they’re people who internalize the bigotry directed toward them and regurgitate it toward their own."

  • Adelson and Saban were kingmakers, now they're beggars
    • MOOSER- "Are you aware that on Jan 20th, Obama and his administration will be leaving Washington, and Trump becomes President and runs the Executive Branch?"

I'm not so sure that will happen. With Obama stating that Putin interfered with the election, the stage has been set for a color revolution coup d' etat. No, I am not joking. These "Russian hacking the election" charges have gone much too far to be walked backwards. Then you will have your wish. Hillary and Victoria Nuland, Soros and the CIA. Think that is an improvement, do you?

    • KALITHEA- "What’s the matter with everyone since Trump was elected? I swear, people are spinning every move he makes into something haplessly hopeful and earth shattering."

Say what? From my perspective, mostly I see delusional liberals spinning everything Trump does as a sign of the end times. Lordy, lordy, if only Saint Hillary hadn't been undone by the Satanic Putin!

  • Stephen Cohen calls out liberal media for demonizing Russia, slurring Tillerson and stigmatizing all dissent
    • SIBIRIAK- "If a president criticizes the CIA’s judgment, it could be TREASON."

I guess that means that if President Trump were to try to fire the head of the CIA that would be considered PROOF of treason? Actually, I am somewhat surprised that the Electoral College voted the way it did. I thought it a distinct possibility that the CIA, et al, would have made 50 electors offers they couldn't refuse. Other options are still available.

    • MOOSER- "Don’t worry!"

Who's worried? With the CIA in charge, a worker's paradise is at hand. Peace, justice and prosperity is their motto and has guided their actions at home and abroad.

    • SIBIRIAK- "And what are the ramifications of that assertion?"

Obviously that Trump and the CIA backed Deep State are not going to resolve this by agreeing to disagree. We are seeing what likely is a coup in process. With Obama weighing in, the FBI caving and the talking heads crying treason, I have difficulty imagining Trump being inaugurated. Poor Julian Assange is likely toast at this point. The Phoenix has landed!

    • MOOSER- "Don’t worry, “Keith”! As an experienced politician, I’m sure Trump is aware of all these contingencies, and knows what to do, and how to handle it."

By agreeing to make Victoria Nuland Secretary of State? Establish a No Fly zone over Syria? Force the Ukrainian neo-Nazis to attack Crimea? Launch a full blown propaganda assault on Putin? In other words, morph into Hillary Clinton? Not good enough. Trump simply lacks the ability to manage empire as ruthlessly and effectively as Hillary. He is a buffoon who would ineptly derail Deep State plans for the New World Order, which is why the entire power structure supported Hillary. Trump has no significant support among the power elite, and it will be interesting if he survives.

    • SIBIRIAK- "Hyperbolic rhetoric, demonization memes and outright falsehoods regurgitated."

Indeed. And what is the headline in the Seattle Times I wake up to see? "OBAMA: PUTIN BEHIND HACKING". The President of the United States has gone on record as saying that Putin has interfered in the election! And what are the ramifications of that? It has gone much to far for any graceful exit. The knives are out and blood will flow. In an interview with John Pilger published November 5, Julian Assange categorically states that "Trump will not be permitted to win." (Julian Assange)

    • TOKYOBK- "I hope I am wrong."

No you don't. You are but you don't.

TOKYOBK- "He is clearly at least friends with... Putin."

Since he has never met Putin, how is this possible? Love letters, perhaps? Expansionist Putin? Expansionist NATO, yes. Expansionist Putin, no. And I don't want to hear any propagandistic BS about how Russia "invaded" the Crimea. The Crimea voted overwhelmingly to return to Russia in response to the US coup in Kiev which installed a bunch of neo-Nazis. For an alleged "scholar" you have a curious aversion to facts.

    • LPROYECT- "David Friedman who would view Philip Weiss as a traitor."

And a lot of other American Jews as well. Good heavens, is there a method to Trump's madness? Combine this with his bromance with Netanyahu whom American Jewish liberals love to hate. Trump hasn't even taken office yet and already he has driven a wedge between Israel and Its American Jewish supporters. Interesting times, indeed!

    • LPROYECT- "...this would make him a natural ally of those who are trying to legitimize the Trump electoral victory against claims that Russian hacking made it possible."

In order to plumb the depths of your imperial Marxist logic, let us pretend that the Russians did hack Podesta's emails rather than a leak. How does that help Trump? I notice that you focus on "hacking" but avoid mentioning emails. Standard propagandistic diversion. I assume you are referring to the Wikileaks email dump, are you not? Opposed to Wikileaks and Julian Assange, are you? Or are you referring to the FBI investigation of Hillary's mishandling her emails? I can see how this would hurt Clinton, but what does that have to do with a Russian hack? Getting back to the Wikileaks dump, the Democrats immediately tried to shift attention away from the emails themselves and onto a fanciful Russian hack. So what exactly helped Trump? Was it the alleged hack itself? Was it the Wikileaks release of the emails itself? Or was it the content of the emails? Do you have any reliable evidence that the Wikileaks release of all of these emails had more than a minimal effect on the election results? If so, what was in the content of those emails that caused this? Should Wikileaks have sat on this leak (per Julian Assange) until after the election? Forever? Apparently you have high confidence in both the competence and integrity of the CIA? Lproyect, unrepentant imperialist and CIA apologist! We truly live in interesting times!

    • SIBIRIAK- "So, Alperovitch and his CrowdStrike firm work for the Atlantic Council which is ideologically committed to a neoliberal, “demoracy promotion”, anti-Putin stance–and he is the source of the critical technical “evidence” ( weak as it is) implicating Putin in the DNC hacking."

It says volumes about perception management that this can be narrowly focused on Putin and an alleged hack, and how this constitutes unacceptable "interference" in our "democracy", a veritable casus belli. Forget the alleged hack, HOW did this alter the results? Oh, the Wikileaks email dumps? Why would positive email communications negatively influence voters? In effect, what the Democrats are admitting is that it was the widespread knowledge of the CONTENTS of Hillary's emails which caused the problem. This is roughly equivalent to claiming that an anonymous video of police shooting an unarmed Black man is a perversion of our justice system. How can the police be exonerated if the video shows them doing it?

This whole business has taken on surreal aspects. I am linking to a new video of a Texas elector saying he can't in good conscience vote for Trump. In the video he refers to Trump's "defense of Putin" versus the "facts" provided by the intelligence community. Incredible! Below that, I have linked to a press conference where Canadian journalist Eva Bartlett responds to a similar argument by a journalist in the audience. Both of these are interesting for what they reveal in this age of propaganda. Link to Texas elector video:
      Eva Bartlett ink:

    • TOIVOS- "Most of the people I know who identify as liberal democrats support completely Hillary’s claims that Putin was responsible for her loss." is calling for the Electoral College electors to vote for Hillary instead of Trump. If the CIA/Soros/Democrat nexus is successful in their soft coup attempt (what else to call it?), President Hillary would be expected to retaliate for this Putin lead assault on our democracy. By specifically blaming Russia and Putin for Hillary's loss, this element of the Deep State is laying the groundwork for war. Does not the membership understand that they are calling for confrontation and likely war? Perhaps it would be appropriate to once again quote Herman Goering on how the people can be made to support endless war.

"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." (Herman Goering)

    • SIBIRIAK- "Technique: Quote the unsubstantiated opinions of an extremely biased ideologue without giving the slightest hint that he/she is an extremely biased ideologue."

That is absolutely correct, and highly indicative of a propagandistic media. Furthermore, what conclusion can we draw from sending this guy to Moscow as US Ambassador? He is in to regime change, not diplomacy. And now he is being quoted as some sort of expert rather than as a proven attack dog. And what does that say about how the media is lined up in the efforts of the CIA/Soros/Democrat domestic color revolution? And don't think that it can't happen here. A couple of quotes to make the point.

"On June 2, 2010, Hillary Clinton's calendar as secretary of state shows that she held a half-hour meeting with billionaire investor George Soros and officials from his Open Society Institute, which makes grants to various causes around the world. (The group is now known as the Open Society Foundations.)

In the room for the meeting was Obama White House special assistant Michael McFaul, who would go on to become the U.S. ambassador to Russia. Also included, according to the calendar entry, were two officials from the Open Society Institute: Michael Hall, who is now the group's regional director for the Caucasus and Central Asia, and Jeff Goldstein, who is now the group's senior policy advisor for Eurasia, according to the organization's website." (Eamon Javers)

"This year in January, Obama’s Unites States was so kind to send a new ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul. He’s no stranger to Russia. Being a generous man, he helped bring chaos and misery to Russia in the 90’s. You would think his Russian would be better than it is today but he doesn’t really care. As he said,
“Most Russia-watchers are diplomats, or specialists on security and arms control. Or Russian culture. I am neither. I can’t recite Pushkin by heart. I am a specialist in democracy, anti-dictatorial movements, and revolutions”
In other words he is a no account trouble maker. He paid people to protest during the Russian presidential election and like a disease they passed it on."
      (Xavier Lerma)

    • SIBIRIAK- (quoting Keith Olbermann) “We are at war with Russia ,” Olbermann said. “Or perhaps more correctly, we have a lost a war with Russia without a battle. We are no longer a sovereign nation, we are no longer a democracy, we are no longer a free people — we are the victims of a bloodless coup.”

The bloodless coup will be if the CIA/ Democrat/ Soros nexus of evil is able to suborn enough electors to install warmonger Hillary Clinton as President. What color is this "revolution?" Silver lining? We now see Democrats for what they really are- lying warmongers! It's all about power. We truly live in interesting times!

    • PHIL- "He said that Rex Tillerson of Exxon Mobil is also being slurred as a friend of Putin’s."

Two comments. First, when did liberals suddenly approve of red baiting? When did the Democrats become the anti-Russian, consummate war party? How many Democratic supporters fancy themselves "liberal," yet go along with this right-wing militaristic warmongering? It would appear that "liberal" is just a label and group solidarity is the primary motivator. How did it come to this?

Second, I am so sick of the constant liberal whining about what a disaster Trump's cabinet choices are. In our neoliberal empire, bad is relative. Let us do an honest comparison of the proposed Trump cabinet (no doubt bad) with Obama's cabinet choices. How does Rex Tillerson compare with warmonger Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State, for example? How does he compare with President wannabe Hillary's likely choice of Victoria Nuland for Secretary of State? I seriously doubt that Tillerson, bad as he may be, is anywhere near as bad as Hillary Clinton or Victory Nuland. In other words, the choice could be a lot worse. At least with Trump we may all live long enough to experience the disaster soon to come. Cold comfort, perhaps, but comfort nonetheless.

  • Theresa May adopts a definition of anti-Semitism that demonizes Israel's critics
    • HARRYLAW- "“Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews."

Harry, that is the definition of the old anti-Semitism. The definition of the "new" anti-Semitism is anything and everything which is less than 100% support for Israel and Zionist power-seeking. The anti-Semitic label is applied based upon the new definition, however, the characteristics of the old definition are inferred based upon the label.

  • Barghouti warns Trump that moving embassy to Jerusalem would be shocking violation of int'l law
    • MUSTAFA BARGHOUTI- "If the US takes such a decision, it will not only be violating international law, but violating a unanimously respected international principle that no country can annex another’s territory by force."

I guess I must be odd. Although I don't approve of moving the embassy to Jerusalem, I am much more concerned with human rights abuses, "mowing the lawn," etc. I place more value on the physical condition of the Palestinians than on illegal symbolic issues. It is all too easy to stand on principles when you are sitting in an arm chair.

PHIL- "Al-Monitor’s Ben Caspit points out that the understanding between Trump and Netanyahu is viewed with horror by most of American Jewry and is doing what settlements, house demolitions, and massacres could not do, it is alienating the body of American Jewish leadership from Israel."

Killing them with kindness! You have got to love it. A blundering Trump wrecking havoc on Israel and empire. How come the Dems haven't highlighted the "bromance" between Trump and Netanyahu? Have we entered a golden age for gallows humor or what?

  • 'We betrayed the legacy of the Holocaust': Professor Yair Auron pushes Israel to confront complicity with Bosnian genocide
    • K RENNER- "Figures that you’d actively try and deny that the Serbs were genocidal or what they did amounted to attempted genocide, lol."

Figures that you would regurgitate the imperial propaganda used to justify a brutal imperial intervention. You have done this before. I know, I know, if you can't trust the imperial MSM to provide the unbiased truth, who can you trust?

    • MERSIHA GADZO- "The breakup of Yugoslavia that started in 1991 with Slovenia and Croatia first seceding, escalated into a war in Bosnia & Herzegovina that culminated in a genocide and the worst atrocities Europe had witnessed since the Holocaust.

From 1992-1995 Serb forces waged a war in Bosnia & Herzegovina to ethnically cleanse Muslims in the region for a “Greater Serbia.” 250,000 Bosnians were killed and an estimated 20,000-60,000 Bosnian women were raped. Others were wounded and tortured in concentration camps."

The plans to breakup Yugoslavia occurred before 1991, the German BND (CIA equivalent) initially headed by former Nazi General Reinhard Gehlen initiating contact with former WWII allies the Croats. The US became formally involved in 1990, when the U.S. Congress passed the Foreign Operations Law of 1991 which, among other things, specified a cut-off of all aid, credits and loans to Yugoslavia within six months. The World Bank and IMF were directed to follow suite. The only money to be permitted was to go to the right-wing separatist forces. It was, in effect, a declaration of economic war against Yugoslavia. The CIA predicted a bloody civil war as a consequence. Of course, that was the intent.

I am not going to go into a lot of detail on this which we have covered before. Suffice to say that the depiction of events by Mersiha Gadzo is a regurgitation of imperial propaganda used to justify the imperial intervention used to dismember Yugoslavia and justify and expand NATO. Empires don't do humanitarian anything. Had the US and NATO not become involved, virtually none of this would have happened. Those interested in more detail can read the entire link and/or go to my commenter's profile and search "Yugoslavia" and/or other keywords. There are some good books on this by Johnstone, Parenti, Chomsky and others. We live in an age of constant deception where the information battlespace is a critically important part of modern hybrid warfare, and the demonization process is standard procedure.

  • Jared Kushner's family foundations gave $325,000 to Israeli army support group
    • PHIL- "However, the support for an occupying army that has committed many human rights atrocities does not speak to the impartiality of Jared Kushner as a mediator."

Yes, but Phil, it is hard to find impartial mediators like Dennis Ross and Martin Indyk.

  • Israel advocates worry Trump's pick for State has anti-Israel bias
    • SIBIRIAK- "He would face aggressive questioning from Republican foreign policy hawks, led by John McCain."

Donald Trump is one of the few people around who might bring up Admiral McCain's role in the attack on the Liberty. There is no love lost between these two and McCain better watch his step. Trump has less to lose than McCain and there could be some real blood spilt. Jeez, I can hardly wait!

    • SIBIRIAK- "Tillerson will be forced to go on record embracing the bipartisan anti-Russian /anti-Putin dogma point by point during his confirmation hearings. If he shows the slightest hesitation, he will be voted down."

Normally, I would agree with you. Now, I am not so sure. Trump is a wrecking ball. What if Netanyahu embraced Tillerson as the price of the US embassy in Jerusalem? There is a huge schism within the elites regarding the future of empire. Trump may be a jerk, but he is a devious jerk. Who else has the cajones (cajanes if you are a Hillary supporter) to take on the CIA? We truly live in interesting times.

    • AMIGO- "Kushner and Bolton —God help the Palestinian people."

Yeah, the Palestinians have had it pretty good up until now. Without Uncle Sam, Hillary, George Soros and the CIA to protect and coddle them, what will they do?

    • Good Lord, has it come to this? A Secretary of State who doesn't want war with the Russians? Hopefully, the McCarthyite Democrats will put a stop to this! The Republicans become faux populists even as the Democrats become red-baiting warmongers. Only in America, folks! Doesn't Trump understand that peace is unAmerican? But seriously, folks, this power struggle amongst the elites for control of the empire during the next critical four years is no joke. And the CIA/Democrat/Soros nexus is extremely powerful and commited to war. Hold onto your socks, gang, the you-know-what is starting to hit the fan

  • Jewish brawl on CNN signals breakup of the pro-Israel monolith in the Trump era
    • HOPHMI-"Still don’t know why Keith is still allowing to post on a site where antisemitism is alleging not permitted."

You are being disingenuous. Mondoweiss bans the old style anti-Semitism defined as hatred of Jews because they are Jews, something which obviously does not apply to me. You, however, are concerned with the new anti-Semitism defined as not 100% supportive of Israel and Zionist power-seeking. Since Mondoweiss is anti-Zionist, they obviously don't intend to ban themselves as you allege. Having you ever considered abandoning your irrational fundamentalist attitudes? And, while I hesitate to bring it up, your focus on me in particular suggests some sort of unsavory fixation. I'm sure Freud had a name for it. Perhaps Mooser recalls what it is, having observed your shortcomings for many years.

    • YONAH FREDMAN- "It was meant as a message to a particular group of jewhaters."

Does one have to be a Jew hater to oppose the policies of the Federal Reserve? The power and actions of Goldman Sachs (the archetypal Wall Street financial predator)? The currency speculations of George Soros, the actions of his Open Society Foundation? Soros is strongly associated with the Democratic Party and their anti-Trump protests. Is Trump anti-Semitic to show Democrats and not Republicans? Can you come up with three alternate Wall Street insiders who are well known and associated with the Democrats? Three iconic figures associated with Wall Street and the Democrats appear for a total of 5 to 6 seconds total in a 2 minute ad and you claim anti-Semitism? You are a typical Jewish Zionist with your never-ending search for anti-Semitism.

    • PHIL- “It’s become common on the left now to refer to Steve Bannon as an anti-Semite, with reference to the famous Trump ad that pictured George Soros, Janet Yellen and Lloyd Blankfein, among others, as part of Clinton’s global elite that is hurting ordinary Americans.”

It is highly indicative of Zionist paranoia that an anti-Hillary attack ad of 2 minutes which featured three power brokers who happened to be Jewish for 2 seconds each could be even remotely anti-Semitic. Hell, most folks who saw the ad probably didn’t even recognize who these three were much less their ethnicity. Does being Jewish entitle someone to invisibility? It is anti-Semitic to show the Chairman of the Federal Reserve? To show a currency speculator, regime change activist and Democratic power broker? To show the chairman of the notorious Goldman Sachs (aka vampire squid)? The person with the most face time was Hillary, with Bill second. Does this make it an anti-Gentile ad? And just how “Jewish” are Janet Yellen, Lloyd Blankfein and George Soros? Are they deeply religious? Or is the criteria for their “Jewishness” the same as used by the Nazis and Zionists? In a sane society, the notion that this particular ad was anti-Semitic would be greeted with much deserved ridicule.

As an aside, I couldn’t finish watching the video with Shmuley Boteach. This guy is so right wing and out of touch with reality that Steven Bannon’s reputation will only suffer by association with this Zionist zealot.

    • Even before reading the article I felt the need to comment on the picture. How would you like to open the door Halloween night and see these two guys standing there? I mean Jeez.

  • 'Love thy neighbor as thyself' -- Really?
    • SIBIRIAK- "[Cue Keith to quote Israel Shahak on classical Judaism ; - ) ]"

Not today. I am much more concerned with this ongoing demonization of Russia and what that implies for the future. First of all, it appears part of the Democrat fat-cat effort to delegitimize the election of Trump utilizing color revolution tactics. The Democratic competitive advantage over the Republicans when competing for oligarch money is that the Democrats can deliver the elite agenda more effectively than the Republicans. Hog tying Trump has certain advantages for the Dems. Additionally, the Democrat/CIA/Soros nexus appears to be resolved to confront Russia with or without Hillary. These guys want to eliminate the competition prior to the impending financial collapse/restructuring. And they want to be in control of events during the transition period. So, instead of Israel Shahak, I quote and link John Stauber on the astroturf "progressive" Democrats.

"The money for the progressive pundits and media comes from donations, but the really critical fuel is supplied by the Blue Oligarchs, their foundations, and the super rich and wealthy who want to promote the Democrat Party. Call them the Soros and Steyer Crowd. They see the need to whip the progressive forces into the sort of populist tide that Bernie surfed, before he washed out, took a dive actually." (John Stauber)

"The self-labeled Progressive Movement that has arisen over the past decade is primarily one big propaganda campaign serving the political interests of the the Democratic Party’s richest one-percent who created it. The funders and owners of the Progressive Movement get richer and richer off Wall Street and the corporate system. But they happen to be Democrats, cultural and social liberals who can’t stomach Republican policies, and so after bruising electoral defeats a decade ago they decided to buy a movement, one just like the Republicans, a copy." (John Stauber)

  • Why a Texas rabbi keeps losing a debate over Israel with a white nationalist leader
    • JONATHAN OFIR- "Zionism assumed from the outset that Jewish assimilation is not viable and should not really be attempted...."

Methinks that you are being a tad disingenuous here. The early Zionists were at least as concerned with the existential threat assimilation posed to Jewish peoplehood. That remains true today as modern Zionists are deeply concerned that Jewish assimilation is too viable and an existential threat to Zionist based Jewish kinship solidarity.

  • 'NYT' bias amazes: long article about online incitement in Israel/Palestine only blames Palestinians
    • JON S- "I assume that in your country, too, the police and the army are different forces."

At one time they were totally separate. Now, however, with the ongoing militarization of the police our police departments resemble an occupying army designed to control the civilian population.

  • Defending Ellison, Jewish writers publish 'apartheid' description of Israel in 'Slate' and 'Washington Post'
    • ECHINOCOCCUS- "...US warmongering and aggression rears its rather ugly head, as there are no anti-war Democrats, and none among the Republicans either."

Yes, and isn't that a sad commentary on the times when one is hard put to come up with the name of even one high ranking government official at the federal level who consistently advocates for peace. And now, instead of pulling out all of the stops to eliminate nuclear weapons, the US is going to spend $1 trillion over thirty years to modernize the arsenal. We are ruled by militaristic psychopaths. Will the species survive?

  • I hereby chuck my right to Jewish national self-determination
    • I might further add that when it comes to state violence, violence against Jews is virtually non-existent, whereas, violence against non-Jewish minorities is rampant, particularly in the US.

    • SIBIRIAK- "...Theresa May saying the measure will help efforts to combat hate crime against Jews."

Ah yes, "hate crime." A special category created to exaggerate crimes with Jewish victims. If we forget this nonsense and just compare crimes against Jews versus crimes versus non-Jews, what does this show? Well, we don't know, do we? I strongly suspect that crimes of violence against Jews are probably lower than crimes of violence against non-Jews. But, of course, people like Theresa May feel no need to substantiate the need for all of these laws criminalizing behavior subjectively judged to be "anti-Semitic." Hate crimes statistics are propaganda, nothing more. And these laws against "anti-Semitism" reflect Jewish power, not Jewish victimhood.

  • Washington Post promotes shady website attempting to smear independent journalism as Russian propaganda
    • SIBIRIAK- "2) Russia had a motive to do the hacking."

Notice how the CIA and MSM assume that a motive for hacking is the same as a motive for providing the emails to WIKILEAKS. These are two different issues. Multiple people may have hacked these unsecured emails to gather intelligence. What would be Russia's motive for releasing these emails to WIKILEAKS? Has WIKILEAKS ever published hacked information or has it always been LEAKED information from whistle blowers? Is there solid evidence that the WIKILEAKS email dumps significantly effected the results of the election? I seriously doubt that Russia would incur the wrath of empire without more substantial odds of success. I doubt that the WIKILEAKS email dumps had significant impact but have been unable to find specific data dealing with this. Notice, also, how the CIA/MSM have conflated emails with Russia. The more serious email issue was the FBI investigation into Clinton's improper and potentially illegal use of a private server. Right now it would appear that the CIA is interfering with the US election.

As an aside, I recommend "The CIA As Organized Crime: How Illegal Operations Corrupt America And The World," by Douglas Valentine, which I am now reading.

    • MOOSER- "At this point, their biggest problem is what to do with the data that they have."

I'm not sure they have a problem with that. The bigger problem for us is to even guess at what they are doing with the data they have. Between modern high capacity computers and mega storage devices and high powered search engines we are in such a totally new environment from even 30 years ago that I am finding it difficult to even contemplate all of ramifications of what is going on. I have dark forebodings, but....

    • ANNIE- "domestically? that would surprise me."

Why? I didn't say that they had death squads operating, I relied on Douglas Valentine's intimate knowledge of the Phoenix program and how it was organized.

"The key word is coordination. When the National Security Establishment wanted to centralize the War on Terror here in the United States, through the DHS, they copied how Phoenix had coordinated multiple agencies in order to streamline and bureaucratize the war against the Viet Cong Infrastructure (VCI)." (p23, "The CIA as Organized Crime," Douglas Valentine)

The key concept to take away is that the Department of Homeland Security is primarily intended as a means of domestic population control and is organized along the lines of the Phoenix program. How this compares to Jeff Halper's description of Israel's matrix of control is another matter. I suspect that they share many features as their intent is the same.

    • ANNIE- "...blacklist has ties to CIA and ukranian fascism."

I have long suspected that the CIA has connections with the major digital corporations- Microsoft, Facebook, Google, Amazon, etc. Covert government assistance can provide one heck of a competitive advantage. In "The CIA As Organized Crime," which I have just begun to read and highly recommend, Douglas Valentine maintains that the Department of Homeland Security is organizationally patterned after the Phoenix program utilized in Viet Nam. The National Security State which has evolved considers the 99% to be the enemy population to be controlled, hence, the militarization of the police as an occupying army. We live in interesting times.

    • LYSIAS- "...create a commission to reduce digital safe havens for terrorists and criminals using encryption."

A "terrorist" being anyone who doesn't support the empire 100%, and encryption the enemy of spying on the citizenry. Things have gotten real bad real fast. Full spectrum dominance is coming home to roost.

  • ADL's Greenblatt is the one who needs to express 'contrition' for accusation of Keith Ellison
    • MAGHLAWATAN- "True, Keith, but most ideologies are Financial or political and not bound up with the core identity of people as Zionism is."

And what is religion if not an ideology with a godhead? Religion's staying power is due to the fact that it deals with the metaphysical world, hence, non-falsifiable. All ideologies touch upon the core identity of the believers, some more than others. And according to Israel Shahak, Zionism is a return to a secularized Classical Judaism. I am not denying the fundamentalist nature of Zionism, merely that it is not unique in that respect.

    • DONALD- "But I took his underlying point to be that the ideology does funny things to people’s thinking."

That, after all, is the primary purpose of ideology, is it not? To give the group members a structured and coherent group basis for interpreting reality which tends to harmonize reality perception among the membership? Which, in turn, guides group activity in implementing group goal seeking activity? All ideologies misrepresent empirical reality to some degree, some more than others.

  • Saban calls Ellison 'clearly an anti-Semite' (and not on Wikileaks)
    • HOPHMI- "Thank you for making it clear once again that in your world, a Jew isn’t permitted to speak his mind."

You have it backwards, Hophmi. I love it when fat-cats engage in straight talk and say things usually only uttered in back rooms behind closed doors. He who pays the piper calls the tune, or at least has veto power. Curiously, some folks don't seem to understand that as long as Lord Saban and his ilk more or less own the Democratic Party, there is no likelihood of the Democratic Party becoming truly progressive. Bernie's "revolution" is a fraud. I repeat a previous quote and link in case you missed it.

"In other words, in this article Hayden was describing, in an unusually concrete way, how the state of Israel, through its state officials and their compliant American partners, was effectively managing—exercising veto power over Democratic Party candidates, at the very least—American elections down to the level of State Assembly. In any constituency “attuned to the question of Israel, even in local and state elections,” Hayden knew he “had to be certified ‘kosher,’ not once but over and over again.” (Jim Kavanagh) - See more at:

    • HAIM SABAN- "Keith Ellison would be a disaster for the relationship between the Jewish community and the Democratic Party."

Thank you Haim for making it abundantly clear who the Democratic Party represents.

  • ADL is leading 'witch hunt' against Keith Ellison over Israel comments, J Street exec says
    • MAGHLAWATAN- "Keith you seem to imply that parasitical Zionist money is the only possible funding model for the Dems."

No I didn't. I indicated that Jewish Zionist money was critical for Democratic Party victory at the polls. The Greens didn't rely on Zionist money and look how well they did. If you know anything about the Democratic Leadership Council and the New Democrats like Bill Clinton, then you are aware of how the right turn of the Democrats was designed to attract corporate and other fat-cat funding. Jewish Zionist campaign funding is absolutely critical for Democratic political campaigns. Just try taking the Democrats back to their roots and see what happens.

    • MAGHLAWATAN- "Israel is not the Democratic Party’s problem."

Of course it is. Organized Jewish campaign contributions account for over 50% of the Democratic Party funding. If fat-cat Jewish Zionists withdrew their financial support, the Democratic Party would soon become a powerless Third Party. Support for Israel has become so ingrained in the Democratic Party as to be virtually automatic. I repeat a previous quote and link about how Tom Hayden had to curry Jewish approval to even run as a Democrat for the California State Government.

"In other words, in this article Hayden was describing, in an unusually concrete way, how the state of Israel, through its state officials and their compliant American partners, was effectively managing—exercising veto power over Democratic Party candidates, at the very least—American elections down to the level of State Assembly. In any constituency “attuned to the question of Israel, even in local and state elections,” Hayden knew he “had to be certified ‘kosher,’ not once but over and over again.” (Jim Kavanagh)

  • New anti-Semitism legislation may stifle campus activism for Palestinian rights
    • ADDICTIONMYTH- "In fact, this is how the holocaust started...."

This is an important point which needs to be emphasized. It is not merely a case of laws against speech being ineffective, but that they are usually counterproductive. What better way to make these folks feel like victims than to attack them? What better way to cause them to increase their commitment than to create a sense of defensive solidarity? This is why I have such a problem with these anti-Trump rallies. To make the point, I provide the last half of the Flemming Rose quote which followed your quote. Then a quote by John Stauber on how this tactic proved counterproductive so far. Recommend the entire Stauber article.

"Leading Nazis such as Joseph Goebbels, Theodor Fritsch, and Julius Streicher were all prosecuted for anti-Semitic speech. Streicher served two prison sentences. Rather than deterring the Nazis and countering anti-Semitism, the many court cases served as effective public-relations machinery, affording Streicher the kind of attention he would never have found in a climate of a free and open debate. In the years from 1923 to 1933, Der Stürmer [Streicher’s newspaper] was either confiscated or editors taken to court on no fewer than thirty-six occasions. The more charges Streicher faced, the greater became the admiration of his supporters. The courts became an important platform for Streicher’s campaign against the Jews. In the words of a present-day civil-rights campaigner, pre-Hitler Germany had laws very much like the anti-hate laws of today, and they were enforced with some vigor. As history so painfully testifies, this type of legislation proved ineffectual on the one occasion when there was a real argument for it." (Flemming Rose)

"The massive, continuing protests against President Trump, #NotMyPresident, are not a movement and will only benefit Trump. They are an emotional tactic devoid of strategy, and one that has made Trump stronger and stronger since it was first unleashed during the Republican primaries at the beginning of 2016." (John Stauber)

    • PHIL- "It has become an urgent American discussion because the Trump victory has pushed liberals and leftwingers into the same political space, of Trump resistance."

Trump didn't create the conditions which underlied his victory. These conditions are the consequence primarily of neoliberal globalization, something which so-called liberal Democratic administrations have championed since Bill Clinton was elected. Protesting Trump the man while ignoring these policies is a typical liberal diversion from reality. You need to focus on policy, not personality. Besides, the Deep State still rules, albeit with some relatively minor realignment of priorities. I suspect that the Trump administration will de-emphasize war and try to get that latest disastrous tax cut for the rich and corporations passed into law. The final grand theft prior to a restructuring of the global financial system.

I might add, that once you begin thinking of Trump and his supporters as the enemy while ignoring the corporations and financial system, you are contributing to the division of society along a sort of manufactured sectarian basis. You are playing into the Deep State's hands as you assist them in their efforts to divide and rule.

    • ANDREW R- "Tell me if anything in this article is evidence of a foreign-backed jihadist invasion of Syria."

Are you serious? It is well understood that within the empire the imperial media faithfully follows the imperial narrative, hence, the target of destabilization/regime change will be demonized. It would be inconceivable for any significant part of the mainstream media to report that the US/NATO/Saudi Arabia/Turkey/et al where engaged in yet another intervention to reshape the Middle East per the stated goals of the neocon warmongers who drove that policy.

In evaluating the news, one must look for patterns which are consistent with known reality. For example, is the US the head of a transnational empire? What exactly do empires do? Why does the US have up to 1000 military bases around the globe? Does the US have a history of intervention? Was the neocon plan to destabilize Syria and six other countries just locker room talk, etc? The historical reality of imperial machinations in the Middle East combined with stated objectives combined with observed patterns of current behavior can only be explained by Syria being an imperial intervention akin to Libya before it. Hence, I believe the reports of deadly violence from the anti-Assad forces right from the get-go. Anyone who seriously claims that the NATO trained and supplied terrorists in American made tanks are a consequence of Assad cracking down on peaceful protesters is either out of touch with reality or intentionally spewing propaganda.

For those willing to accept responsibility for the empire's deplorable behavior toward the people of the Third World, I link to a short video of John Pilger discussing the West's long history of divide and rule in the Middle East.

    • ANDREW R- "Does that sound right?"

No, your misrepresentation of reality does not sound right. What you are calling an "infiltration" would be more accurately described as an invasion by a proxy army of terrorist mercenaries. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the concept of hybrid war? Suffice to say that an extremely well armed fighting force of Islamists supported by the full might of empire and its allies could overwhelm a weak Third World country like Syria. Without Russian intervention, Syria would have been overrun. Once Syria was destroyed like Iraq and Libya, support could be withdrawn from these mercenaries who would likely fade away without fuel and ammunition for their US tanks and artillery. Ever since Reagan's use of the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, the empire has utilized Islamist mercenaries to wreck havoc on states resisting imperial domination, including using Islamists in the former Yugoslavia.

    • ANDREW R- "Those who haven’t been in a coma the last 5 years will notice the US only started conducting airstrikes in Syria in Sept. of 2014 and only against ISIS and JAN, not Assad’s forces."

Those of us who are not propagandists for empire are fully aware of the full extent of imperial interventions and destabilizations in the Middle East for many years. The latest phase began under the George W. Bush administration and continues today. The current phase consists of Islamist mercenaries armed, trained, and logistically supported by the various NATO countries and other Middle East Gulf monarchies. This is a modern army equipped with US battle tanks and artillery which receives massive support from the US, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, etc. I provide two quotes and links.

"…in the Pentagon in November 2001, one of the senior military staff officers had time for a chat. Yes, we were still on track for going against Iraq, he said. But there was more. This was being discussed as part of a five-year campaign plan, he said, and there were a total of seven countries, beginning with Iraq, then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Iran, Somalia and Sudan...." (Wesley Clark, Winning Modern Wars, p. 130).

"The plain truth is that Syria is the victim of a long-planned Joint Criminal Enterprise to destroy the last independent secular Arab nationalist state in the Middle East, following the destruction of Iraq in 2003. While attributed to government repression of “peaceful protests” in 2011, the armed uprising had been planned for years and was supported by outside powers: Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United States and France, among others. The French motives remain mysterious, unless linked to those of Israel, which sees the destruction of Syria as a means to weaken its archrival in the region, Iran. Saudi Arabia has similar intentions to weaken Iran, but with religious motives. Turkey, the former imperial power in the region, has territorial and political ambitions of its own. Carving up Syria can satisfy all of them" (Diana Johnstone)

    • LPROYECT- "Like most people who comment here, your primary activity seems to be writing pro-Assad or pro-Putin comments."

Have you considered applying for a job at the State Department office of propaganda? Since when does opposing empire and imperial destabilization make me pro-Assad or pro-Putin? Compared to the imperial Islamists, however, Assad looks pretty good, particularly seeing as how the entire Middle East is such a mess precisely because of Western imperialism. None of this would be happening without this brutal intervention which you shamelessly support. Uncle Sam is the primary culprit not Assad. And you are a propagandist for empire, making common cause with the likes of Bolton, Nuland and Negroponte.

LPROYECT- "Keith, it really wants me to puke my guts out when I see people making a stink about “violent and imperial regime change in Syria” as Russian jets have bombed every last hospital in East Aleppo to rubble."

You have very selective guts. Apparently, your guts are unaffected by these Islamist terrorists operating American heavy armor and artillery. And how many hospitals would have been destroyed had there been no intervention? The bottom line, Louis, is that you are an unrepentant imperialist in Marxist drag. Although you didn't answer my question directly, it appears that you would look with favor upon John Bolton as Secretary of State. As for this ongoing nonsense about bombing "last hospitals," I provide a link to a review of the ongoing stories claiming that the last hospital in East Allepo was destroyed. Again. And again. And again....

How Many “Last Hospitals” Russia-led Airstrikes Destroyed in Aleppo?

    • ANNIE- "...alerted me to her alignment/support to modi and the BJP, which is disturbing."

Yes, it would be disturbing enough based upon Gujarat alone, however, the recent demonetization of India will be disastrous for the Indian 99%. The elimination of 500 and 1000 rupee bills may sound like getting rid of big denominations until you realize that at 68 rupee per dollar, we are talking $7 and $14 equivalents. I quote and link an article below which puts this in perspective.

"On November 8 the shock to the financial system was administered by Mr. Modi by demonetising 500 and 1000 rupee notes. India is an overwhelmingly paper currency country: some 90% of the transactions are done with cash. India’s cash-to-GDP ratio is 12% More than half of Indians still don’t have a bank account and some 300 million have no government identification. The two scrapped denominations – 500 and 1,000 rupees – account for more than 86% of the value of cash in circulation.

By this diktat the government effectively neutralized around 86 percent of the currency in India. The staggering implication for the informal sector in the Indian economy which employs close to 94% of the labour force was disastrous. The daily wage earners, farmers, small traders and small businessmen were left helpless clutching the dud 500 and 1000 rupee notes in their hands." (Sridhar Chakravarthi Raman)

    • LPROYECT- ""

Ah Louis, linking David Duke? Would it be safe to assume that he, like you, is an unrepentant Marxist? Unlike you, I am unfamiliar with the website, however, based upon your linked article by Patrick Slattery, it would seem that at least in this one area they are talking sense. Below I quote the first paragraph, then comment below that.

"On Monday Donald Trump met with Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. She has been mentioned as a possible Secretary of State, or even Secretary of Defense (she is an Iraq War combat veteran and Major in the Hawaii National Guard). It’s not just that she would be preferable in these jobs to John Bolton, Rudi Giuliani, or Mitt Romney, but is probably the very best candidate from the ranks of the Washington establishment." (Dr. Patrick Slattery)

Putting aside the question of how Gabbard compares to others in the "ranks of the Washington establishment," I agree that she would be preferable to Messrs. Bolton, Guiliani or Romney. Do you disagree? Would you like to see John Bolton as Secretary of State? Like you, he favors violent and illegal imperial regime change in Syria. Birds of a feather flock together, kiddo.

    • LPROYECT- ""

At last, at last, you have written something I find interesting. In Gabbard's defense, since Israel supports the Islamist proxy war against Syria, she obviously is not being influenced by her support for Israel. You, on the other hand, are a case study in ossified Marxists who have evolved into a symbiotic relationship to empire whenever a Democrat is the one making war. Getting back to Gabbard, one always needs to exercise caution when dealing with a retired career imperial stormtrooper. And Modi? I read enough Arundhati Roy to know that he is a brutal Hindu Fascist. For those who defend Modi, I link to a 5 minute video about him by Arundhati Roy which makes the point.

  • Keith Ellison seeks to placate Israel lobby, by saying he is against BDS
    • CAPTADKER- "your racist colloquialism- “to call a spade a spade”, insults every BLM proponent of the palestinian cause"

There is no racial inference in the phrase "to call a spade a spade." From Wikipedia:

"To "call a spade a spade" is a figurative expression which refers to calling something "as it is",[1] that is, by its right or proper name, without "beating about the bush"—being outspoken about it, truthfully, frankly, and directly, even to the point of being blunt or rude, and even if the subject is considered coarse, impolite, or unpleasant. The idiom originates in the classical Greek of Plutarch's Apophthegmata Laconica, and was introduced into the English language in 1542 in Nicolas Udall's translation of the Apophthegmes, where Erasmus had seemingly replaced Plutarch's images of "trough" and "fig" with the more familiar "spade." The idiom has appeared in many literary and popular works, including those of Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens, W. Somerset Maugham, and Jonathan Swift."

Nice to know that I am in good company! Sibiriak is probably correct that an article on this would be off topic on Mondoweiss. I may attempt to sneak in a comment from time to time as I learn more, but until a few of the professional analysts I trust delve into this, I, like you, have only vague but dire forebodings.

My limited understanding of how it works is that Indians will have a limited time to use these notes to deposit in a bank. After that, the 500 and 1000 rupee notes become worthless paper. Can negative interest rates on deposits be far away? The implications for financial control of the citizenry are mind boggling.
