Dear Reb Brian,
I read everyday and have read on the conflict and peacemaking now for many years and have seldom seen a more compelling argument for justice. I try in my own way to do what I can, recently by bringing Gershon Baskin to Philadelphia and working with others to get him a positive interview in the Jewish Exponent. I hold a different kind of Zionism in my heart, (far closer to the cultural Zionism you mention). I think that it is in the realization of peace through relationship building that two peoples and their large Diaspora communities can find a way to embrace the essence of the Judaism I hold dear; A Judaism the sees every individual as a child of G-d.
Shalom-Salaam-Peace,
Larry Snider
It's easy to lump everyone together take their pulse and determine that none meet a standard of liberation that jives with your own. The specturm is large and the history of knocking everything right of far left and left of far right has insured that there is seldom enough common ground for people to stand on together to move peace even a few inches forward. Can we find a way to agree on some things and actually build on that?
I don't believe two states are dead. We can do all we need to create two states with reasonable borders, international backing and a rational, (OK semi-rational) path to negotiating all the outstanding final status issues. It may be easy to sound the death nell and it may be logical, but it isn't prudent. There are plenty of people in Israel who see the features of the Arab Democracy Movement as a challenge to Israel's regional hegemony that requires even more discipline and power. Within the uncharted nature of the uprising and its early election returns this position is not so extreme. But there are many who connect the movement for freedom that took place in the streets with the social demonstations in Israel and the United States and a larger arch of change and transformation that offers all people a better future. It even offers Palestinians and Israelis alike another chance to recalibrate their conflict in 2012 and move it forward..
