Thanks, Adam, for this.
Thanks, Annie. It was a great day today. Threatening rain did not appear and we had conversations with many people happening by. Also BDS flashmobs were done in many surrounding stores selling Ahava (Nordstrom) and Sodastream (Bed Bath Beyond) and several others. Cindy and Craig Corrie were there much of the day and will take the Nakba tents to Olympia.

I think I would rather do this than fast, but that is just me. ;) Good on Asher.
Yikes! It looks like Chris Hayes chose his last show to explore the sticky-wicket of Palestine. link to nbcnews.com
But luckily, he is going to have an evening show at 8 o'clock every week night now. Cheers!
Got an alert from a friend yesterday:
"Ask yourself: What would the mothers and fathers of the over 200 Palestinian children held as politcal prisoners in Israeli jails be thinking the day the Zionists tortured a 30-year old Palestinian man to death in their prisons. It won't happen to us? Please do your share. Take a moment to write and call your elected officials. In the US, call president Obama at 1-202-456-1111 and write to him at link to facebook.com. Also call US Secretary of State John Kerry at 1-202-647-4000 or the Office of Near East Affairs at 1-202-647-7209. Demand that they intervene and set free Samer Issawi and all Palestinian political prisoners including the children, our children! Please do that and ask your friends to do the same."
When I called the Office of Near East Affairs (1-202-647-7209), I was informed that Amb. Jones was on her way to the Middle East right now and the office here was recording the concerns of people who called their office, in advance of Obama's visit to the area. The aide(?) insisted they were aware of the Issawi situation. Probably a pro forma response, but it might be worth making a call there.
BTW, when I tried to tweet this info, including the fact of the Ambassador's travel, twitter refused to accept my tweet. As soon as I removed the travel info, it went through. They are censoring, instantaneously.
Thanks for this. Having been present for Chen's "intervention" at the Seattle screening, I'm glad you are getting their strategy out in the open.
Btw, the link marked "video" of the Seattle event, doesn't seem to go to a video link.
Thanks again.
D-I-V-E-S-T!
That's the way it ought to be!
Go, USCD.
A windsurfer & an actress? Glitz quotient kind of low, isn't it?
An much-needed exposé. Will they even blush? Not now, but maybe soon.
I wonder if the pope resigned to give SNL an excuse not to show this next Saturday.
BTW, I just heard a rabbi on To the Point defending Ratzinger for giving some holocaust denier priests a second chance.
Just when you have a sense some progress is being made [5 Broken Cameras, UN nixing settlements]...
Hopefully Brooklyn College will hang on to its integrity and let the meeting happen.
"There are two overriding questions in this country, two issues that define left and right: occupation and war."
Wish occupation and war were even questions in our country. Seems to me they are foregone conclusions here too.
I can still see & hear her challenging the "Zionist hoodlums" during her acceptance speech. Tho I really had no idea what she was talking about, the conviction in her voice stunned me.
Viva Vanessa Redgrave and Palestine!
Israel and the U.S. gov't are on the SAME side so I will not be aghast; there is no deal. It is the way the empire works with its compradores and colleagues in crime. This is blatantly apparent, especially since Pres. Johnson let Israel attack the Liberty and covered it up. The cost was too high to let Americans know whose side the U.S. government was on.
We are all in the same boat as the Gazans, so to speak. They are on the cutting edge of U.S./Israel policy right now, but we are all in their sights.
If Iran wanted to attack some Jews, they could just pick on the ones living there already, but they haven't! link to nytimes.com
Israel has enough power in this country to get the California House of Reps to pass a bill criminalizing criticism of Israel. Maybe that is why Israelis and their supporters don't riot.

Found it on twitter. Not vouching for it.
Thank you. Well said.
Speaking of being a young professional in Tel Aviv, here are some of them on Al Jazeera in a coffee shop trying to talk about the wonderful Jewish Democratic state with Haneen Zoabi sitting next to them. Oh, yes and Schlomo Sand too. link to youtu.be
How could he do this to Aunt Betty?
Hi, Roya. Nope she didn't reply. ;(
I tweeted Nima Shirazi's article featuring Israelis describing their embrace of apartheid to Rudoren. ;)

Best I've read, Mr. Sayeed. And thanks to MRW for the link about empire lovers. Gore nailed it!

Above is part one, of five.
Oh, shoot, Annie. I wish you did live in Seattle. :)
That is not how Bush II was elected. More Democrats in Florida voted for Bush than voted for Nader. Quit blaming Gore's loss on Nader!!!!!
Also this: "On January 12, when Al Gore presided over the counting of the electoral college votes, it was only members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) who rose, one by one, to protest the filing of Florida's votes. They could not get a single Democratic senator (from a body that includes not a single black representative) to join their objection. The silence of the white
Democrats in Congress turned the CBC demonstration into an emphatic
recapitulation of the election drama. As the presiding officer, Al Gore overruled the protests."

"Ms. Makurya, a mother of three, said “everything is determined by the colour of my skin.” For many Israelis, the idea that Jews could be racist toward other Jews is anathema. The 1991 airlift, known as Operation Solomon, brought 14,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel within 36 hours and was greeted at the time with great celebration."

Hi Annie. It was me in the Pollard discussion yesterday. Thanks for putting Mr. Falk out front where he definitely belongs.
Hi, Annie. I think it was me. Glad the whole thing is on the front page now.

Hi, Les. Here is a link to Falk's talk in Seattle: link to youtu.be
The talk was filmed and will hopefully be available. Here is a Seattle Times article on the Falk event (which several folks had to badger them to do). link to seattletimes.nwsource.com
Richard Silverstein has been doing battle with the local NPR station regarding their privileged treatment of Michael Oren's Seattle visit. link to richardsilverstein.com
Richard Falk, UN Rapporteur on Palestine, spoke in Seattle last night. He reminded us of the anniversary of the USS Liberty attack [June 8, 1967] and the outrageous government and media repression of this deliberately fatal attack on U.S. service people by Israel.
Falk basically said the current state of corruption in U.S. policies stems from cover-ups like this. Pandering to Israel is one of the worms in the rotting American apple.
He said international law is degraded by the U.S.'s unequal treatment of global actors and makes global interactions about power and might. I guess this seems obvious, but Mr. Falk is very well placed to confirm this degradation with his long career trying to uphold fairness in international law.
Just saw this article about Ethiopian Jews demonstrating against their treatment in Israel: link to bit.ly
It means Norman doesn't want Palestinians to appeal to a broader audience (like all Americans) on the issues of the boycott. He wants Palestinians to only appeal to up the limits set by Amnesty and Human Rights Watch. In other words, they do not get to determine their own fate. Sorry to upset you so!
"...Ali pretends to speak to and for “Palestinians” as a collective..."
Wasn't Ali saying the BDS call put out by Palestinian civil society was doing the talking? Why can't it speak as a collective?
On the other hand, Norman wants Amnesty and Human Rights Watch to speak for 300 million Americans.
Unfortunately, it looks like Americans for Peace Now are not in the exit line: link to peacenow.org

Gee, the Palestinians wish you would have been around in the 1920s.
I am about to join Morris Berman link to morrisberman.blogspot.com and get the hell out of this place.
Where is it easy to become a citizen?
AIPAC money is "...too much for principle or beliefs." Having just attended a Democratic platform committee meeting in WA state that totally quashed a resolution to end aid to Israel in an perfunctorily unfair way, I believe you are accurate.
So Morris Berman is right. We should get out of this place. link to morrisberman.blogspot.com

Hey, Phan! When did you move to the Big Apple???
No matter, it hasn't affected your excellent skills in reportage. Thank you for this incisive and useful article. Looking forward to the follow-up.

hi, annie. figured. ;)
"...considering china is OUR main competitor in both the ME and africa"
who is this "our" you speak of? i am not competing w/china. personally, i hope israel's venal brutality at least and at last proves to be a major hobble on the capitol of capital in the world.

cheers!
my understanding is the $10,000 would go to each of the 16 co-op board members who were sued by the pro-israeli 5 members.
This video forwarded to our boycott list is some slick PR from SodaStream, showing their magnanimity in having Palestinians working right in their illegal settlement factory! Big of them, huh? link to compassionateseattle.org
This kind of propaganda will certainly sway some people. The list is called Compassionate Seattle. I'm not sure if these videos go to all the members (apparently over 3,000 around the world).
Some of the Palestinian workers forthrightly admit if they could find other work (with the PA), they would do it.
The CEO conveniently wants everyone to put their guns down now (bet he doesn't mean the IDF!)
Glad to see this. Got a "walk-by" comment at the vigil last week -- I should look up the definition of apartheid. Of course, I retorted that I had and maybe SHE was the one who needed a dictionary!
I didn't feel a huge sense of loss when I gave up my cable/tv and therefore Stewart. Your point about his going after predominantly Republican targets has irritated the hell out of me since day one, since I am an independent and think the Dems are the sneakier but more deadly face of the corpocracy.
Thanks, Annie. It felt really good altho local press ignored us., except for a comment about diversity of protest signs and some objections to "Middle East policy." We'll take it. :)
repost of this link but it was really exciting to have blatant banners about palestine at an "occupy" event and have overwhelmingly positive comments: link to siratyst.blogspot.com
So we pushed it a little at Occupy Seattle yesterday. Got overwhelmingly supportive comments ("it's about time" etc.).
link to siratyst.blogspot.com
Why can't Palestine just be freed without any outside troops? Either arm them or disarm Israel.
With NATO, it will be meet the new boss, same as the old boss. And we know whose side the bosses are on.
"What's up with these people?"
Anecdotally, Israelis coming by our vigils in Seattle seem to be more hostile than in the past. One guy last week took my proffered postcard, threw it on the ground and called me "a**hole," and went ranting on his way.
A family came across the crosswalk and the 18 year old woman at the front, gave me the one-fingered salute right into my face and called me an idiot. Her mother started ranting at me and the son (at least 40 years my junior) told me to find something better to do with my Saturdays.
They are arrogant and privileged to push anyone around (at least verbally) who disagrees with U.S. and Israeli policy.
Of course our banner may have had something to do with it. "What Has Israel Got to Hide? Occupation & Apartheid"
(being as how they were stopping people from flying in there.)
"We know the prime minister of Israel has a deep seated love of Israel."
What I think he loves is power; same as Obama.

Thank you for this. Below is a video I made of Tribal Elder Ramona Bennett about the U.S. government's plan to "rid themselves of the nuisance of Indians." This was at a clemency rally for Leonard Peltier, still serving time as a political prisoner, 35 years after the debacle at Pine Ridge. link to youtube.com
It evokes so much of the Palestinian experience as I have heard it.
Hi, Kathleen.
On youtube, I used the search "American Jew arrested Jerusalem" and it came right up.

Rather a sweeping statement, no? I admire people who stand up for themselves. And I'm definitely a lefty.
Bet there are lots of lefties in Lebanon who are glad Hizbullah was around to help defend against Israel.

I think when the protestor made the statement about rebuking hatred, that would have rung a bell with some of these folks.
Also some people were only there b/c they are in a family that insists on it, and might have been educated.
I think the intervention was super. And the fact that community organizers are talking up this cause, especially in Hispanic communities is stupendous. The links are being made on college campuses about being displaced populations and living your life walled in (or out).
Whudda thunk u.s. tv would be better than the BBC on Palestine?

"The Palestine Solidarity Campaign has issued this important statement regarding the BBC."

"the furor over Jimmy Carter’s “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid'”
Not only was there a furor, Zionists (apparently) have put together a class action suit, charging the book is a work of fiction, but was sold as non-fiction.

Watching the loop of pictures of U.S. occupation soldiers on Democracy Now accompanying the discussion of Bin Laden's death and its consequences, I was struck by the similarities with the pictures of Israeli soldiers in Joseph Dana's video documentaries about Palestinian children ("Stolen Children, Stolen Lives") I had just watched. (Pardon if this link has been posted before): link to 972mag.com
If you think of the ordinary people of Iraq/Afghanistan/Pakistan as the same kind of innocents as those children, you can be as depressed as I am about what our world has come to.

eee, i am just suggesting the terms of negotiation. no more eating your pizza and having it too. pick one. if i was israel, i'd choose equal rights for all. israel can come out looking good for a change. freedom of movement for everyone, sharing resources, etc. i'm not a believer, but it sounds something like heaven to me.
"It seems that young idealistic Jews who have been raised loving Israel are in a state of agony right now."
Wounds need astringent to clean them. Israel either has to 1) get off Palestine's land or have 2) equal rights for all.
Israel, pick one: 1) get off Palestinian land or 2) equal rights for all
"It’s amazing how many solidarity activists have no idea that Land Day was initiated by a (largely Palestinian) political party still calling for a two state solution. Perhaps they are ‘soft Zionists’? That would make Land Day a Zionist event, no?" -- Clechner
Hey, Zionist! Pick one: 1) Get off of Palestine's land or 2) equal rights for all who live there.
Thank you. If the U.S. is a city on a hill, it is for the same reason that Israel tries to get all the hills in Palestine.
Love to all Palestinians in Gaza! Viva Palestine.
