  • Israeli hysteria over UN vote is solidifying country's new status, as a rogue state
    • Very good piece, Phil. Whatever we think about Obama's record on this for his entire administration, this move really serves to tip things re how Israel is perceived, with implcations domestically for Israel as well as for the US, although where it leads is anyone’s guess.

But on the issue of Israel domestically -- we need to be aware of what that anti-Netanyahu ad actually says -- the translation on the side leaves out the most interesting part. Here’s what it says:

For the sake of a few isolated caravans, Netanyahu has brought our entire country into a condition of isolation. Bibi has to go! — The Zionist camp."

It’s that first line that is interesting, right? “Caravans” is the Israeli term for the trailers that are brought in to establish an illegal “outpost” that then grows into a full-fledged city-colony. They all started that way. One wonders what this “Zionist camp” really means to do by kicking Bibi out. If it is characterizing the project of colonization, annexation, and Apartheid warehousing as “a few isolated outposts” then I don’t think we’re looking at any kind of change. It’s about finding a way to make the project acceptable, all they’re doing is calling for a smarter diplomatic policy now that they see they are in danger of losing the US along with the rest of the world.

    • Exceptional reporting Philip. "The worldwide Jewish community has failed Israel." Wow.

I'm sending this on to EVERYBODY. Including the rabbi of the big Reform Temple here in Portland, with whom I'm talking but am at loggerheads. Including the whole activist community here who testified at City Council hearing yesterday on putting Caterpillar on the no-buy list for the city. The usual suspects from the "organized" Jewish community showed up and disgraced themselves as usual by trying to intimidate and shame the councilors from doing their job of following the city's SRI rules which eliminate Caterpillar on 5 out of 6 criteria, human rights being only one of them. Screaming anti-semitism, invoking the Nazis, demonizing BDS. It was hideous, as usual. The Jewish community is failing Israel. And its own members. And its standing in the world. I found myself thinking, anti-Semitism? This creates it. Bravo Jonathan, bravo New Rochelle Temple, bravo Mondoweiss. Hope? I dunno, but I'll permit myself a look at the future.

"The worldwide Jewish community has failed Israel." Wow.

    • Excellent piece Rebecca! Wonderful that you are calling attention to what is going on at the congregational level. What happens on the ground, in the community and inside the congregations, although not receiving as much public notice as what is going on at the denominational levels, may be even more important, that's where the change originates and that what drives everything. This kind of conflict in the faith community is actually a marker of health. The church is used to controversy and it makes it stronger. These struggles are helping to keep the church dynamic and strong but change and growth come from the grassroots. Someday this will be going on in our synagogues as well, but it's right that the St. Mikes and churches across the country are not waiting. Congratulations and keep up the struggle!

  • You know Israel's in trouble when 'NYT' runs op-ed saying it's replacing Iran as isolated theocracy
