Rubber and murder, slavery in its worst form.
Under terms of the General Act of the Berlin Conference, Leopold pledged to suppress the East African slave trade; promote humanitarian policies; guarantee free trade within the colony; impose no import duties for twenty years; and encourage philanthropic and scientific enterprises. Contrary to his pledge, beginning in the mid-1880s Leopold issued a series of decrees that eventually violated these conditions.

L.A. Times apologizes for calling Ben Hur a Palestinian (September 28, 2011)
The Los Angeles Times corrected an item about an anniversary release of a “Ben Hur” DVD that called the title character a Palestinian.
The correction came following complaints from readers and the staff of CAMERA: Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America of a Calendar item published Monday.
“A Sept. 26 Calendar section article about a new DVD and Blu-ray release of the 1959 film ‘Ben-Hur’ described the title character, played by Charlton Heston, as a Palestinian nobleman,” the correction said. “The character Ben-Hur was a Jew from Judea who lived long before the place now known as Palestine was given that name.”
The original item had said, “Based on the novel by Lew Wallace, the period drama revolves around Judah Ben-Hur (Heston), a Palestinian nobleman who is enslaved by the Romans, engages in one of the most thrilling chariot races ever captured on screen, and even encounters Jesus Christ.”

CNN's Dana Loesch Cheers Soldiers Who Urinated On Corpses, Says She Would "Drop Trou" And Do It Herself:
CNN "political analyst" Dana Loesch, on the other hand, apparently doesn't care if these actions were directly working against the mission of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan; instead, she cheered for it in order to fuel the unhinged Muslim hatred that has become a staple of modern day right-wing media. On her show, she gave the marines in question "one million cool points" and said that she would "drop trou" and "do it too." She ended by saying: "Do I have a problem with that as a citizen of the United States? No, I don't."

One in 10 Norwegian women over the age of 15 has been raped, according to the country’s largest shelter organization, the Secretariat of the Shelter Movement. But at least 80 percent of these cases are never brought to official attention and only 10 percent of those that are end in a conviction, the Justice Ministry says.
Nowhere is this taboo more stubborn than in the family home, long considered off-limits for law enforcement and the state.
“The statistics tell us that the safest place for women is outside, on the street — most rapes happen at home,” said Tove Smaadahl, general manager of the Shelter Movement. In a 2005 survey by the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research, 9 percent of female respondents in a relationship reported experiencing sexual assault.

wiki: Delphine Seyrig used her celebrity status to promote women's rights. The most important of the three films she directed was the 1977 Sois belle et tais-toi (Be Pretty and Shut up) that included actresses Shirley MacLaine, Maria Schneider, and Jane Fonda, speaking frankly about the level of sexism they had to deal with in film industry. In 1982 Seyrig was the key member of the group that established the Paris-based "Centre Audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir", which maintains a large archive of women's filmed and recorded work and produces work by and about women. In 1989, Seyrig was given a festival tribute at Créteil International Women's Film Festival, France.

Ron Paul was one of five Republicans to vote for a House defense bill amendment that would begin the process of repealing "don't ask, don't tell". His reason?
"I have received several calls and visits from constituents who, in spite of the heavy investment in their training, have been forced out of the military simply because they were discovered to be homosexual," Paul told The Washington Post Friday.
"To me, this seems like an awful waste. Personal behavior that is disruptive should be subject to military discipline regardless of whether the individual is heterosexual or homosexual. But to discharge an otherwise well-trained, professional, and highly skilled member of the military for these reasons is unfortunate and makes no financial sense," Paul said."

Should be "rode... to power". Cringe.
It's like eye-for-an-eye in reverse - Adelson & Geller cancel out Goodman & Schwerner. How ironic is it that people who road enlightened ideals and the civil rights movement to power have locked arms with racist, misogynistic, homophobic religious fanatics to re-seed the ground, relentlessly and strategically, with vicious, jingoistic gutter racism? Gee, it's not like America had any problems with that before or paid a very big price to heal from it. On the brighter side, Hophmi and eee can rejoice.
It would be anathema to my New England Unitarian ancestors to even consider itemizing their influence on abolition, literature, academia, etc., while others financed the slave trade, the Confederacy, Big Cotton, several market bubbles, and both the north and the south in the Civil War, but this post calls for it. Tribal hubris is toxic, degrades everyone.

The Source of America’s Wars

In order to understand what motivates Bill Kristol’s professed hyper-patriotism, with its consistently disastrous prescriptions, it’s worth recalling how his father, Irving Kristol, reacted to Vietnam War critic Senator George McGovern. The presidential contender’s proposed cut in U.S. military expenditure would, according to the “godfather” of neoconservatism, “drive a knife in the heart of Israel.”
“Jews don’t like big military budgets,” the elder Kristol explained in a Jewish publication in 1973. “But it is now an interest of the Jews to have a large and powerful military establishment in the United States … American Jews who care about the survival of the state of Israel have to say, no, we don’t want to cut the military budget, it is important to keep that military budget big, so that we can defend Israel.”

Bellow era anti-Semitism
In a 1967 letter to Evelyn Waugh’s biographer, Christopher Sykes, Graham Greene tells how he once reproached Waugh for his “anti-Semitic rudeness” to Alexander Korda at a dinner party. Waugh said “He had no right to bring his mistress to Carol Reed’s house”, to which Greene said, “But I had my mistress with me”. Waugh’s casuistic reply, “That is quite different. She is a married woman”.

The thought of five million orphans in a nation of 26 million people is simply too appalling to fully comprehend. An equivalent number in the United States would be 57 million orphans.
Video taping torture, the destruction of evidence, and the exact role of the White House in the entire affair are indicative and emblematic of the larger problems. These acts represent a gruesome metaphor. But it's just more of the same outrageous behavior we've seen for years.
The overriding crime is over a million deaths plus the suffering and abandonment of millions more, all due to a foreign policy based on lies and deception. This was done against the prevailing views of the military and the people of the United States.
Millions of Iraqi civilians are dead, suffering and abandoned.

Humanitarian crisis caused by the War and Occupation of Iraq
Red Cross report shows that the US-UK invasion of Iraq caused 1.2 million deaths, including, 2,000 doctors, created 4.7 million refugees and resulted in the assassination or imprisonment of 5,500 academics and intellectuals.
The medical profession in particular has been hollowed out. Iraq's health-care system used to be the envy of the Arab world. But after the U.S. invasion, doctors became targets for ransom kidnappings and assassination. Upwards of 120 physicians were killed. Some were gunned down in their own clinics. Things got worse than ever after 2005, when loyalists of the radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr gained control of the Health Ministry. Hospitals turned into Shiite militia bases where Sunnis could be killed on sight. The Sadrists are in retreat now, but the doctors are still missing. The current health minister, Salih Hasnawi, estimates that roughly half the country's doctors have fled, from a prewar total of as many as 30,000 or more.

Lebanese Parliament Passes Genocide Resolution
BEIRUT-The Lebanese Parliament unanimously approved a resolution Thursday, calling for the commemoration of the 82nd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Turkish government at the beginning of the century.
The resolution is the first step toward a complete recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the Lebanese government, and the subsequent condemnation of relentless Turkish denial tactics.
The resolution, presented by the parliament executive, calls on all Lebanese citizens to unite with the Armenian people on April 24” in commemorating the atrocities of 1915-1923.

The data released by Clinton shows the total payload dropped (on Cambodia) during these years to be nearly five times greater than the generally accepted figure. To put the revised total of 2,756,941 tons into perspective, the Allies dropped just over 2 million tons of bombs during all of World War II, including the bombs that struck Hiroshima and Nagasaki: 15,000 and 20,000 tons, respectively. Cambodia may well be the most heavily bombed country in history.

"Obviously, the Israelis know the gay issue is a 'conflict area' between the secular west and Arabs, so they 'Hasbara' up this staged crap to re-invigorate the conflict. Individual states have every ethical right to legislate their choice of religious law—provided it’s the whole religious law, rather than a piece intended to enflame a particular group. We don’t do that in the US. In the US we demonize specific groups for public gain while we rely on their members for personal gain.
The obscene calculation that gay rights offsets the Lobby's hopes for homophobes like Bachmann and keeps American Liberals in check (@maddow) exhibits a depth of contempt for gays that defies description. At least Bachmann doesn't play both sides of the fence.
