"As for global warming, Liu, et al, just published an important paper in the Chinese Science Bulletin that examined a 2,485-year Tibetan tree ring. The scientists were able to ascertain the long arc of climate change." MRW

I hope I've got this straight, i.e. that you both consider a 2500 year time span adequate for assessing the "long arc of climate change."

Well, I sure don't. There have been many ice ages in earth's history. How can we possibly know where we are in this much longer arc of climate change? We can't, imo.
I''ve been fascinated by the new understanding of how the American Scablands were created. Here's Wiki on this topic:

"At the end of the last Ice Age (the Wisconsonian Ice Age), a branch of the Cordilleran ice sheet moved out of Canada into the Idaho panhandle region. There it formed a 2,000 feet (610 m)-high ice dam that blocked the mouth of the Clark Fork River, creating glacial Lake Missoula, which impounded greater than 2000 cubic kilometers (500 cubic miles) of water. The lake extended up the valleys eastward for over 200 miles (320 km). The periodic rupturing of the ice dam resulted in the Missoula Floods – cataclysmic floods that swept across Idaho and Eastern Washington, and then down the Columbia River Gorge approximately 40 times during a 2,000 year period. The flood front swept in a wave across Idaho and Washington at speeds approaching 100 kilometers per hour (65 miles per hour), and Glacial Lake Missoula drained in periods as short as 2 days.[2]

The Columbia River channel downstream was blocked by the Okanogan lobe of the Cordilleran, impounding water in Glacial Lake Columbia. As a result the floods could not continue down the Columbia River, being forced instead to flood over the highlands of Eastern Washington, vastly transforming the landscape by forming the Grand Coulee, Moses Coulee, the Channeled Scablands, Dry Falls, Palouse Falls and many similar features. The cumulative effect of the floods was to excavate 210 cubic kilometres (50 cu mi) of loess, sediment and basalt from the channeled scablands of eastern Washington and to transport it downstream.[2] Over a period of 2,000 to 2,500 years, the repition of ice dam failure and flood was repeated 40-60 times, leaving a lasting mark on the landscape."

    • MRW,

I watched and listened to the 2 Eben Moglen videos. A very compelling lecturer, indeed. His message is this:

We all need personal portable web servers in which our own files, messages, etc. (he uses the term "logs") are kept---logs that are not stored anywhere else on the web. He calls this personal web server a "freedom box" as in free from governmental and corporate spying.

Well, let's have one, I say! What are the odds, do you think, of such a device coming on the market? How far has EM come in the development of the freedom box? The videos are a year or so old.

    • MRW, RoHa, re Carbon in the atmosphere

The excerpt below comes at the end of "Keystone XL: Game over?" published on the website:

"Commentators who argue that the Keystone XL pipeline is no big deal tend to focus on the rate at which the pipeline delivers oil to users (and thence as CO2 to the atmosphere). To an extent, they have a point. The pipeline would carry 500,000 barrels per day, and assuming that we’re talking about lighter crude by the time it gets in the pipeline that adds up to a piddling 2 gigatonnes carbon in a hundred years (exercise: Work this out for yourself given the numbers I stated earlier in this post).

However, building Keystone XL lets the camel’s nose in the tent. It is more than a little disingenuous to say the carbon in the Athabasca Oil Sands mostly has to be left in the ground, but before we’ll do this, we’ll just use a bit of it. It’s like an alcoholic who says he’ll leave the vodka in the kitchen cupboard, but first just take “one little sip.”

So the pipeline itself is really just a skirmish in the battle to protect climate, and if the pipeline gets built despite Bill McKibben’s dedicated army of protesters, that does not mean in and of itself that it’s “game over” for holding warming to 2C. Further, if we do hit a trillion tonnes, it may be “game-over” for holding warming to 2C (apart from praying for low climate sensitivity) [my bold], but it’s not “game-over” for avoiding the second trillion tonnes, which would bring the likely warming up to 4C.

The fight over Keystone XL may be only a skirmish, but for those (like the fellow in this arresting photo ) who seek to limit global warming, it is an important one. It may be too late to halt existing oil sands projects, but the exploitation of this carbon pool has just barely begun. If the Keystone XL pipeline is built, it surely smooths the way for further expansions of the market for oil sands crude. Turning down XL, in contrast, draws a line in the oil sands, and affirms the principle that this carbon shall not pass into the atmosphere."

"(apart from praying for low climate sensitivity)" We must all start praying?? Is that it? Is that all we've got?

I sure as hell hope not!! What about implementing some Risk Management strategies, like the one outlined here.

    • Since the earth is entering a cooling phase of its climate cycles,...

Are you referring to the El Nino and La Nina cycles, RoHa?

If so, I believe these two alternating cycles are not the chief factors impacting global warming.

Global Carbon Emissions Reach Record 10 Billion Tons, Threatening 2 Degree Target

ScienceDaily (Dec. 4, 2011) — Global carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels have increased by 49 per cent in the last two decades, according to the latest figures by an international team, including researchers at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, University of East Anglia.

Published Dec. 4 in the journal Nature Climate Change, the new analysis by the Global Carbon Project shows fossil fuel emissions increased by 5.9 per cent in 2010 and by 49 per cent since 1990 -- the reference year for the Kyoto protocol.

On average, fossil fuel emissions have risen by 3.1 per cent each year between 2000 and 2010 -- three times the rate of increase during the 1990s. They are projected to continue to increase by 3.1 per cent in 2011.

Total emissions -- which combine fossil fuel combustion, cement production, deforestation and other land use emissions -- reached 10 billion tonnes of carbon* in 2010 for the first time.

Half of the emissions remained in the atmosphere, where CO2 concentration reached 389.6 parts per million. The remaining emissions were taken up by the ocean and land reservoirs, in approximately equal proportions.

    • My concerns about the long term viability of the internet revolve around server farms and climate change. These farms take vast quantities of water for cooling the servers and more and more servers are built each year. How is this sustainable?

Also, what happens to this fragile network when we start getting more and bigger storms each year, which is bound to happen as the earth warms?

I'm guessing that for Klein the answer to all 3 questions is 'none'.

But how much do any of us really know about Christian Zionists and their role as powerful lobbies in Canadian and U.S. politics?

Christian Zionists only watch and listen to church news we've been told here. We can't reach out and talk to these folks; as a result we must concentrate our energies on their very un-Christian leaders, e.g. Haggee and company. Know thy enemies and follow their money, I say.

In order to get some idea of the actual number of Christian rapturists, it would be useful to find out how many Scofield Reference Bibles are sold each year.

Here's an excerpt from Is the Pretribulation Rapture Biblical? by Brian M. Schwertley:

"The person most responsible for the rather widespread acceptance of Pretribulationalism and Dispensationalism among Evangelicals is Cyrus Ingerson Scofield (1843-1921).

      C. I. Scofield published his Scofield Reference Bible in 1909. This Bible, which espoused the doctrines of [John Nelson]Darby in its notes, became very popular in Fundamentalist circles. In the minds of many a Bible teacher, fundamentalist pastor and multitudes of professing Christians, Scofield’s notes were practically equated with the word of God itself. If a person did not adhere to the Dispensational, Pretribulational scheme he or she would almost automatically be labeled a modernist.

Today there is a whole plethora of books advocating the pretribulation rapture theory and the Dispensational understanding of the end times. Given the fact that among professing Christians the pre-trib rapture is still wildly popular, a comparison of this theory with scriptural teaching is warranted. We will see that the typical arguments offered in favor of this theory are in conflict with the Bible."

    • Margaret Cassar, What an achievment! Thank you!

It's curious that Christian Zionists have been your worst tormentors. Here you are in a previous post describing their actions:

"Most worrying has been the revelation that Christian Zionists play a powerful role on the ground in countries like Australia in stifling debate on the Israel-Palestine conflict."

"Our Christian Zionist counter-protesters have used an arsenal of techniques to scare us away from the Mall. They turn up in groups and loudly proclaim a most un-Christian hatred and condemnation of the protesters and many other sections of the Australian community."

"This particular group usually arrives with Israeli flags, soap boxes, a full size cross on wheels and loud speakers to stridently broadcast their repugnant views to hapless shoppers in the Mall. Some verbally abuse the protesters and all promote a similar message, “You are doing the devil’s work and you need to repent or you will end up in hell.” Protesters have been called murderers and we have witnessed certain protesters being targeted in an attempt to provoke violent reactions."

In Canada, it is Jewish Defence League thugs who perform this role. I'm glad you've succeeded to a large extent in silencing this very un-Christian mob.

  • What my God chip says about Jerusalem
    • Here is news of two successful lawsuits against rabid, land-thieving Zionists in Israel:

Israel court rules against evicting two East Jerusalem Palestinian families.

Judges reject claims that the homes had been sold to new owners who wanted the Palestinian families out.

      By Nir Hasson link to

"The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court has rejected two separate lawsuits seeking the eviction of two Palestinian families from homes in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan.

In both cases, the plaintiff said the homes had been sold to new owners who wanted the Palestinian families out. Two judges rejected those claims Thursday.

The Faraj family in the home owned by the Yad Yaffe organization. The court ruled the family are protected tenants.

The lawsuits were filed by two groups closely linked to Elad, an organization supporting Jewish settlement in the area, and to Elad chairman David Be'eri, who is also the Israel representative of one of the groups seeking the eviction.

"Elad and its chief are doing their best, and using all methods possible to Judaize Silwan," said Muhammad Dahleh, who represented the Palestinian families in both cases. "They use various judicial entities such as a company registered in a God-forsaken Caribbean island. Only the steadfastness of the local inhabitants and their supporters, and a public and judicial struggle, can stop the explosive situation from deteriorating only a few yards from Al-Aqsa."

One of the suits was filed by Lowell Investments, which is registered in Australia's Cocos (Keeling ) Islands and already owns several buildings in Silwan.

The company said a member of the Karin family had sold it the house, and presented the court with an audio recording of an elderly member of the family who said the house was owned by the man who sold it.

But Judge Yechskiel Barkali ruled that at best, the seller owned a 16th of the house and said the tape did not prove that he was the sole owner.

The court annulled the sale agreement and awarded the family with court expenses and attorney fees of NIS 23,200.

      Second win for Palestinians

The other suit was filed by Yad Yaffe, a nonprofit organization registered as focusing on "research of the Bible, the Mishna and the Talmud." The association sought to evict the Faraj family from an area next to the City of David, saying it had bought the house and the Palestinian family had moved in illegally.

Judge Rachel Shalev-Gertel ruled that the family was protected by the Tennant Protection Law and criticized Be'eri's testimony, saying it was "tendentious, and ignored facts that he was naturally aware of."

The plaintiffs were represented by Zeev Scharf, a lawyer who has previously represented Elad.

The group said those who have the right to the property would study the rulings and act accordingly.

"Because of the obvious sensitivity," the group said, "Elad does not speak publicly about real estate deals it is involved in."

In another recent ruling, the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court ordered Emek Shaveh, a group of archaeologists that regularly criticizes Elad, to pay Elad NIS 1,000 in a libel suit. Elad had sought NIS 1 million."

For commenters and readers who want to pitch in and do some fund raising, the most important points it seems to me are these:

      Mondoweiss Objectives: 2011 Winter Fundraiser

      1. To stop the atrocities perpetrated daily against Palestinians by violent and brainwashed IDF youths, and by murderous, land-thieving, illegal settlers who live on the hilltops.

      2. To help Palestinians win their 100-year old struggle to free themselves from the Zionist invaders who occupy their lands.

      3. To make citizens aware of the growing political power of the Israel Lobby, as in its growing ability to influence votes in the U.S. Congress. e.g. the 23 standing ovations for Netanyahu. Provide url to Friedman quote re "buying votes." )

      4. Money Target, winter 2011: "Our target is $40,000. And half of that is matching funds from generous large donors. So we need $20,000 from readers during this holiday season. Our reader fundraising drives account for nearly half our yearly budget, the rest comes from individual donors. We do not receive finding from foundations or organizations. All contributions are tax-deductible, thanks to our sponsor, the Center for Economic Research and Social Change." Phil Weiss

The Mondoweiss website is growing by leaps and bounds and the level of discussion in the comments sections is often astonishing. Check it out!

During the last fundraiser, I contacted the offices of two of the wealthiest men in America, through windows on one of their web sites.

I needed an attention-grabber, and I would be talking to staff. So I typed in two sentences:

      (1) Is X concerned about the growing power of the Israel lobby in American politics?

      (2) If so, would he consider a donation to Mondoweiss?  (I used the url, not the word.)

I thought this a bit skimpy, and I didn't want to leave the impression that this was an official mondo message, so I added one of my seemingly inexhaustible supply of English idioms:

I am a commenter on Mondoweiss, and I am writing to you off my own bat.
After a thank you, I typed my name.
I don't know if either man gave a donation, but I do think my attention-grabber was pretty good.

"London Immigration lawyer Ed Corrigan said his libel case against Will Hector for calling him "one of the worst anti-Semites in Canada and an idiotic spammer," in an email to the Law Union of Ontario (LUO) List forum, will be a precedent setting legal decision on the question: "is criticism of Israel or Zionism anti-Semitic?"

Mr. Corrigan is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Specialist in Citizenship and Immigration and Immigration and Refugee Protection. He has had extensive experience representing Palestinian refugees, winning around 88 per cent of those refugee claims.

The Law Union of Ontario is an organization of lawyers and law students which is active on legal issues and human rights issues in the province of Ontario and across Canada. Mr. Corrigan participated in Israel-Palestinian debates through the LUO List forum.

Mr. Hector, who has practised law as a private lawyer, was a member of the LUO when he sent the email, as part of an ongoing debate about Israeli-Palestinian issues."

In terms of length of existence in different areas of planet earth, the 3000 or so years of biblical history we hear so much about on MW is a blink of the eye compared to that of indigenous peoples.

Remember, there are very likely natives from both countries reading mondo, and to hear you use that word would cause them great distress.

    • Forgive me, that date at the top should of course be 1917.

    • Tony Greenstein, welcome aboard. There was one member of the 1817 war cabinet who refused to sign the Balfour Declaration, the Jew Edwin Montagu. Here are his reasons:

Memorandum of Edwin Montagu on the Anti-Semitism of the Present (British) Government – Submitted to the British Cabinet, 23 August 1917

"I have chosen the above title for this memorandum, not in any hostile sense, not by any means as quarrelling with an anti-Semitic view which may be held by my colleagues, not with a desire to deny that anti-Semitism can be held by rational men, not even with a view to suggesting that the Government is deliberately anti-Semitic; but I wish to place on record my view that the policy of His Majesty’s Government is anti-Semitic in result will prove a rallying ground for Anti-Semites in every country in the world.

This view is prompted by the receipt yesterday of a correspondence between Lord Rothschild and Mr. Balfour.

Lord Rothschild’s letter is dated the 18th July and Mr. Balfour’s answer is to be dated August 1917. I fear that my protest comes too late, and it may well be that the Government were practically committed when Lord Rothschild wrote and before I became a member of the Government, for there has obviously been some correspondence or conversation before this letter. But I do feel that as the one Jewish Minister in the Government I may be allowed by my colleagues an opportunity of expressing views which may be peculiar to myself, but which I hold very strongly and which I must ask permission to express when opportunity affords.

I believe most firmly that this war has been a death-blow to Internationalism, and that it has proved an opportunity for a renewal of the slackening sense of Nationality, for it is has not only been tacitly agreed by most statesmen in most countries that the redistribution of territory resulting from the war should be more or less on national grounds, but we have learned to realise that our country stands for principles, for aims, for civilisation which no other country stands for in the same degree, and that in the future, whatever may have been the case in the past, we must live and fight in peace and in war for those aims and aspirations, and so equip and regulate our lives and industries as to be ready whenever and if ever we are challenged. To take one instance, the science of Political Economy, which in its purity knows no Nationalism, will hereafter be tempered and viewed in the light of this national need of defence and security. The war has indeed justified patriotism as the prime motive of political thought.

It is in this atmosphere that the Government proposes to endorse the formation of a new nation with a new home in Palestine. This nation will presumably be formed of Jewish Russians, Jewish Englishmen, Jewish Roumanians, Jewish Bulgarians, and Jewish citizens of all nations – survivors or relations of those who have fought or laid down their lives for the different countries which I have mentioned, at a time when the three years that they have lived through have united their outlook and thought more closely than ever with the countries of which they are citizens.

Zionism has always seemed to me to be a mischievous political creed, untenable by any patriotic citizen of the United Kingdom. If a Jewish Englishman sets his eyes on the Mount of Olives and longs for the day when he will shake British soil from his shoes and go back to agricultural pursuits in Palestine, he has always seemed to me to have acknowledged aims inconsistent with British citizenship and to have admitted that he is unfit for a share in public life in Great Britain, or to be treated as an Englishman. I have always understood that those who indulged in this creed were largely animated by the restrictions upon and refusal of liberty to Jews in Russia. But at the very time when these Jews have been acknowledged as Jewish Russians and given all liberties, it seems to b! e inconceivable that Zionism should be officially recognised by the British Government, and that Mr. Balfour should be authorized to say that Palestine was to be reconstituted as the “national home of the Jewish people”. I do not know what this involves, but I assume that it means that Mahommedans and Christians are to make way for the Jews and that the Jews should be put in all positions of preference and should be peculiarly associated with Palestine in the same way that England is with the English or France with the French, that Turks and other Mahommedans in Palestine will be regarded as foreigners, just in the same way as Jews will hereafter be treated as foreigners in every country but Palestine. Perhaps also citizenship must be granted only as a result of a religious test.

I lay down with emphasis four principles:

      1. I assert that there is not a Jewish nation. The members of my family, for instance, who have been in this country for generations, have no sort or kind of community of view or of desire with any Jewish family in any other country beyond the fact that they profess to a greater or less degree the same religion. It is no more true to say that a Jewish Englishman and a Jewish Moor are of the same nation than it is to say that a Christian Englishman and a Christian Frenchman are of the same nation: of the same race, perhaps, traced back through the centuries – through centuries of the history of a peculiarly adaptable race. The Prime Minister and M. Briand are, I suppose, related through the ages, one as a Welshman and the other as a Breton, but they certainly do not belong to the same nation.

      2. When the Jews are told that Palestine is their national home, every country will immediately desire to get rid of its Jewish citizens, and you will find a population in Palestine driving out its present inhabitants, taking all the best in the country, drawn from all quarters of the globe, speaking every language on the face of the earth, and incapable of communicating with one another except by means of an interpreter. I have always understood that this was the consequence of the building of the Tower of Babel, if ever it was built, and I certainly do not dissent from the view, commonly held, as I have always understood, by the Jews before Zionism was invented, that to bring the Jews back to form a nation in the country from which they were dispersed would require Divine leadership. I have never heard it suggested, even by their most fervent admirers, that either Mr. Balfour or Lord Rothschild would prove to be the Messiah.

I claim that the lives that British Jews have led, that the aims that they have had before them, that the part that they have played in our public life and our public institutions, have entitled them to be regarded, not as British Jews, but as Jewish Britons. I would willingly disfranchise every Zionist. I would be almost tempted to proscribe the Zionist organisation as illegal and against the national interest. But I would ask of a British Government sufficient tolerance to refuse a conclusion which makes aliens and foreigners by implication, if not at once by law, of all their Jewish fellow-citizens.

      3. I deny that Palestine is to-day associated with the Jews or properly to be regarded as a fit place for them to live in. The Ten Commandments were delivered to the Jews on Sinai. It is quite true that Palestine plays a large part in Jewish history, but so it does in modern Mahommendan history, and, after the time of the Jews, surely it plays a larger part than any other country in Christian history. The Temple may have been in Palestine, but so was the Sermon on the Mount and the Crucifixion. I would not deny to Jews in Palestine equal rights to colonisation with those who profess other religions, but a religious test of citizenship seems to me to be the only admitted by those who take a bigoted and narrow view of one particular epoch of the history of Palestine, and claim for the Jews a position to which they! are not entitled.

If my memory serves me right, there are three times as many Jews in the world as could possible get into Palestine if you drove out all the population that remains there now. So that only one-third will get back at the most, and what will happen to the remainder?

      4. I can easily understand the editors of the Morning Post and of the New Witness being Zionists, and I am not in the least surprised that the non-Jews of England may welcome this policy. I have always recognised the unpopularity, much greater than some people think, of my community. We have obtained a far greater share of this country’s goods and opportunities than we are numerically entitled to. We reach on the whole maturity earlier, and therefore with people of our own age we compete unfairly. Many of us have been exclusive in our friendships and intolerant in our attitude, and I can easily understand that many a non-Jew in England wants to get rid of us. But just as there is no community of thought and mode of life among Christian Englishmen, so there is not among Jewish Englishmen. More and more we are edu! cated in public schools and at the Universities, and take our part in the politics, in the Army, in the Civil Service, of our country. And I am glad to think that the prejudices against inter-marriage are breaking down. But when the Jew has a national home, surely it follows that the impetus to deprive us of the rights of British citizenship must be enormously increased. Palestine will become the world’s Ghetto. Why should the Russian give the Jew equal rights? His national home is Palestine. Why does Lord Rothschild attach so much importance to the difference between British and foreign Jews? All Jews will be foreign Jews, inhabitants of the great country of Palestine.

I do not know how the fortunate third will be chosen, but the Jew will have the choice, whatever country he belongs to, whatever country he loves, whatever country he regards himself as an integral part of, between going to live with people who are foreigners to him, but to whom his Christian fellow-countrymen have told him he shall belong, and of remaining as an unwelcome guest in the country that he thought he belonged to.

I am not surprised that the Government should take this step after the formation of a Jewish Regiment, and I am waiting to learn that my brother, who has been wounded in the Naval Division, or my nephew, who is in the Grenadier Guards, will be forced by public opinion or by Army regulations to become an officer in a regiment which will mainly be composed of people who will not understand the only language which he speaks – English. I can well understand that when it was decided, and quite rightly, to force foreign Jews in this country to serve in the Army, it was difficult to put them in British regiments because of the language difficulty, but that was because they were foreigners, and not because they were Jews, and a Foreign Legion would seem to me to have been the right thing to establish. A Jewish Legion makes the position of Jews in other regiments more difficult and forces a nationality upon people who have nothing in common.

I feel that the Government are asked to be the instrument for carrying out the wishes of a Zionist organisation largely run, as my information goes, at any rate in the past, by men of enemy descent or birth, and by this means have dealt a severe blow to the liberties, position and opportunities of service of their Jewish fellow-countrymen.

I would say to Lord Rothschild that the Government will be prepared to do everything in their power to obtain for Jews in Palestine complete liberty of settlement and life on an equality with the inhabitants of that country who profess other religious beliefs. I would ask that the Government should go no further.

    • ““secular and atheist Jews” To me, that means Israeli Zionists"

Hostage, this line was meant as a snark to eee, and has come back to bite me. I'm sure there are seculars and atheists in Israel who are not Zionists.

The news that Rabbi Froman has inoperable cancer and will soon be lost to the peace movement in Israel is saddening. Here is more from your link:

"What is most interesting about Froman, and part of the reason he can befriend Hamas leaders like Sheikh Yassine, is that Froman’s allegiance is not to a state or nation. He sees himself as a Jew more than an Israeli. His allegiance is to his tradition and to the land in which his forefathers and mothers lived. He has no interest in political power or even nationality. For that reason, he was entirely prepared to continue living in Tekoah under Palestinian sovereignty, yet another example of his deeply principled, even iconoclastic vision of Jewish-Muslim co-existence.

He is a man of God, a man of the Book. Not a man of the gun. Not a man of political power, but of spiritual power. All of this runs completely counter to the prevailing Israeli ethos, so he is viewed as a maverick or irrelevant by the majority of Israelis. The Shabak views him as a dangerous man and even disrupted his plan to hold a news conference with a Hamas affiliated journalist with whom he planned to present a joint peace plan.

Apparently, Shabak is terribly threatened by Israeli settlers who talk peace. It prefers settlers who refuse any compromise or concessions. Froman also met with Turkey’s president after the Gaza flotilla massacre in an attempt to further reconciliation."

    • I am surprised you equate the two as if there were no Zionists in Israel that are religious. john h,

When I wrote "“secular and atheist Jews” To me, that means Israeli Zionists, full stop," I did not intend to include religious Jews. But now I'm not so sure.

It seems to me the word 'religious' has been debased in Israel.

Do you consider the murderous, land-thieving settlers religious?
Or the Hasids who turn out in droves to spit on and throw filthy diapers at people who upset them?

Of course there are righteous Jews in Israel. But they're sure not in positions of authority these days.

Thanks for looking up the stats.

    • Yes, Bumblebye, cultural Jew.

I'm down with that term, as annie might say.

    • "There are so many secular and atheist Jews in Israel (about 40-50% of the Jewish population)...."

john h, here's another one of 3e's statistics that needs checking out. Can you provide a source for this statement 3e?

"secular and atheist Jews" To me, that means Israeli Zionists, full stop.

    • Call me old-fashioned, MH, but I think 'Christian atheist' is a 'contradiction in terms', so too 'Jewish atheist' and 'Muslim atheist'.

You raise two crucial questions, the same questions you have raised before:

What moral or aesthetic qualities of Jewish or Christian or Muslim culture make it desirable to create states and countries marked by a special affinity with one of these? What justifies imposing the costs of this creation on those of other traditions?

Here's a link to the seven laws of noah. I confess I've never had much time for the Noah legend.

    • Not everyone needs to be a Jew.

Certainly not you, 3e. How can an atheist be a Jew? Judaism is a religion, not an ethnicity, race, or nationality. Why can't you get that through your thick skull?

The education statistics Kaufman cites are appalling.

"Israel’s problems, of course, don’t stop at grade schools. The higher education system is in total chaos. I’ve also had the opportunity to hear Manuel Trajtenberg, the chair of the Planning and Budgeting Committee of the Council for Higher Education in Israel...

Trajtenberg, ... is fighting a losing battle as well. Besides aging faculties, low results and more – Trajtenberg is fighting the biggest brain drain a Western country has ever seen.

      The numbers are staggering (2007):

      - 25% of active Israeli researchers reside in the U.S.(!!!). This is astonishing compared to other countries: Nearby Canada has “drained” only 12.5% of its faculty, Holland 4.3%, Italy 4.2%

      - 33% of Israeli computer science researchers reside in the U.S.

      - 28.7% of Israeli economists reside in the U.S.

What does all this mean? That Israel has decided what its national priorities are: Less basic and quality education. The ones that are educated are leaving because they can’t make it here, and they’re not coming back. Israel has given up.

Taking these conditions into consideration, the anti-democratic legislation, the nationalism and the religious coercion taking over Israel is not only well under way – it has a bright future."

The Prussian king, Friedrich Wilhelm II was a grandson of England's Queen Victoria. In a well-regarded biography of QV (the name and author of which I can't remember and can't find at Amazon) suggested that had QV been kinder to Wilhelm II the Great War might never have happened.

Wilhelm II had withered arm and was apparently "plagued with insecurities." QV never invited him to go sailing at Cowes and there were other slights as well which I've forgotten.

Excerpt from the "Oxford Companion to Military History: Wilhelm II"

"Wilhelm II (1859-1941), Kaiser of Germany, Wilhelm helped lay the foundations for WW I, and in consequence gambled away his throne, bringing to an end the German empire—the Second Reich—established by his grandfather and namesake in 1871. His father, Frederick, had married Queen Victoria's namesake daughter, which was probably the origin of his love-hate relationship with Britain (and his uncle Edward VII and cousin George V). Plagued with insecurities and physically fragile (he had a withered arm), he perceived his father's liberalism as a weakness and resolved to rule with a firm hand. Had Frederick not died of throat cancer just months into his reign, he and Victoria might well have established a constitutional monarchy, which Wilhelm would have found difficult to undermine."

    • hey, what's not to love about geoengineering, mrw?

The Royal Society has been working on Geoengineering & Geoengineering Governance Rules & Regulations for many years. The Royal Society Geoengineering Working Group is almost entirely made up of those that want to conduct research and implement many different types of Geoengineering Experiments.

Geoengineering (or the new term, Climate Remediation officially coined on October 4, 2011, by the Bipartisan Policy Center which is a private congressional lobbying group), also has under its umbrella genetically modified trees, plants, seeds, crops, etc. The intention is to drive a carbon tax which will fund many private corporations who will engage in a myriad of geoengineering schemes and make huge sums of money under government and other contracts or to fund under a U.S. government budget in 2012.

Since research, scientific knowledge experiments, and military actions are not covered under most international treaties and opens the door for these experiments to be used around the world. Solar Radiation Management is one such experiment that will only "mask" temperature or global warming...this is not a fix. Once started it cannot be stopped as the warming it "masks" will then show up immediately and fast. The water vapor, sulfur or aluminum oxides gases, used to make small particles in the atmosphere will need to be used the particles will fall back to Earth on a constant basis...polluting air, water, soils, causing acid rain and other problems.
