I have been trying to find an answer to this but haven't been successful at all: What will happen to right of return and status of refugees in the even that the bid does go forward?
"Anti-intervention shouldn’t equate to whitewashing Gaddafi’s crimes."
[...] Replace "Ghaddafi" with "Khamenei", "Asad", etc, etc.
EXACTLY! That's what we Iranians were SCREAMING after our notorious election and the violence that followed (NOT comparing it to the violence in Libya) ... while to our horror, many on the left cheered those thugs and murderers Ahmadinejad and Khamenei.
I'm a bit confused about the logistics of this. The General Assembly, unlike the Security Council, does not give any member the right to veto (as far as I know). And up until now, I assumed Abbas was taking this vote the General Assembly in September. But, on Al Jazeera, they say that any vote to the GA must go through the Security Council first, in which case the US is surely to veto it.
Does anyone know how this works? Don't the SC and the GA have different functions?
Thank you for this Sarah.
As a middle easterner, I've had very similar feelings for the last two days: link to sidewalklyrics.com
Was wondering if you saw David Remnick's coverage of Haaretz in this week's New Yorker? I'm curios what Phil and/or Adam thought about it.
You can add Iran to that list. TWO civilians were killed during the protests on Monday, and their bodies were stolen.
I don't understand Eltahawy, saw her here and on Bill Maher (aka O'Reilly) and she is outspoken, but not well enough. Here she briefly touches on it - that democracy is about electing who the nation wants, not who best serves the interests of the United States and Israel. But she's never taken this argument further.
For instance, when imbeciles like Dershowitz make the absurd "democracy" comments, why doesn't she once mention Israel? We all know that Israeli society is increasingly becoming radicalized ... thus crackpots like Lieberman and Netanyahu come to office ... But we [the United States] don't question their right to hold an election and elect who they want. Even if it doesn't serve our interests. Why doesn't the same apply for other countries in the region? If Dershowitz believes that Ahmadinejad or the Muslim Brotherhood or Hezbollah, etc can't be allowed to legitimately run for office and win, surely he should think the same about Lieberman and Co?
