I became involved in the issue of Israel's occupation of Palestinian in 2004 when I was invited to visit the West Bank with Women of a Certain Age. The experience turned me into an activist for Palestinian rights. In May 2009 I visited Gaza with a delegation of 13 people, Philip Weiss being one of them. That brought me to mondoweiss. The trip raised my outrage and passion to tell anyone who will listen (and some who'd rather not) about what I saw...which was devastation and an attempt to destroy the people of Gaza through the siege, constant harassment by the IDF and the Dec.-Jan. invasion and bombardment.

It is an improvement. All Palestinians should be able to come and go freely...that will be a day to celebrate.
Does anyone know if the new opening regulations includes internationals? Do they continue to have hoops to jump through between the embassy (US) and Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Relations (I think that's the correct Egyptian agency) I'd like to return to Gaza if possible.
That's a brilliant idea Bumblebye! It would be an amazing sight.
Today I received the letter printed below from a friend who is sailing on the Audacity of Hope. The letter sounds as though it were written by AIPAC in support of Israel, not representatives of Congress working on behalf of their constituents
The Audacity of Hope will carry people who are witnessing their belief in freedom for Gaza and the West Bank. The ships cargo? Letters, thousands of letters for the forgotten people of Gaza written by Americans who want them to know that,"Yes, many Americans support their right to Freedom"
The letter from congress to the Prime Minister of Turkey states Gaza has plenty of everything, thanks to their generous jailers. Gaza if not only growing but exporting food...amazing, considering in 2009 Israel took 25-35% of Gaza's farm land. Note the letter says nothing about Israel's confrontational actions and their murder of participants in last years flotilla. The letter is an AIPAC letter that needs to be confronted.
Those sailing on the Audacity of Hope ask you write a letter to your member of congress supporting the Flotilla, questioning the false statements in the congressional letter and providing the positive facts about Free Gaza and the Audacity of Hope.
Washington, DC – On Wednesday, Reps. Steve Israel (D – NY) and Tom Cole (R – OK) led a bipartisan letter to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urging the Prime Minister to stop another flotilla from departing Turkey for the Gaza Strip. Thirty-six Members of Congress signed the bipartisan letter, which asked the Turkish government to help find constructive alternatives for those wishing to provide aid to Gaza.
“Another so-called aid flotilla to Gaza is nothing but an attempt to provoke Israel. The Turkish government can help prevent violence by saying ‘no.’ We are urging Prime Minister Erdogan to actively work to put a stop to this and join with Israel in providing real humanitarian assistance to Gaza,” said Rep. Israel.
"Turkey plays an important role in the Middle East, and its democratic leaders have a unique opportunity to prevent the turmoil that could result from allowing another Gaza flotilla to confront the Israeli security blockade,” said Rep. Cole. "During this volatile time in the region, I urge Prime Minister Erdogan to work with Israel to avoid conflict and ensure legitimate aid is delivered without creating needless instability."
The full text of the letter is below.
May 11, 2011
His Excellency
Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey
Ankara, Turkey
Mr. Prime Minister-
We write today to express our serious concern over reports that the so-called Free Gaza Movement and the IHH are planning to send another flotilla to Gaza in the coming weeks to provoke a confrontation with Israel. As members of the United States House of Representatives we ask you to help discourage these efforts and work with the Israeli government in a productive way as it continues to allow legitimate aid, but not weapons, to enter Gaza.
The government of Israel has demonstrated a commitment to ensuring the basic needs of those living in the Gaza Strip are being met. Over the last year the capacity of existing land crossings has been increased; for example, capacity of the Kerem Shalom crossing has increased by 210 percent. More than 3600 supply trucks entered Gaza in the month of March alone, delivering tens of thousands of tons of goods, including food, clothing, medicine, and fuel. Over the past year, agricultural exports from the Gaza Strip have gradually increased and economic growth in Gaza reached 15 percent in 2010. These are all clear signs that Israeli policies are making a positive impact on the lives of the Palestinian people.
As you know, the government of Israel has a right and a responsibility to protect the Israeli people, and we all realize that the threat facing innocent Israelis by weapons smuggled into Gaza is real. In March, Israeli naval forces intercepted the Victoria, seizing more than 50 tons of weapons, including mortar shells and bullets, destined for Gaza militants. During a 3-day period in early April, approximately 130 rockets and mortars were fired at the civilian population of southern Israel by Hamas and other terrorist groups. In one case, an advanced precision-guided rocket that had been smuggled into Gaza was fired at and hit an Israeli school bus.
Israel, like any country in the world, must take whatever steps necessary to protect its citizens and that starts with preventing additional weapons from entering Gaza. If flotilla organizers carry out their confrontational plans, the Israelis will have little choice but to board the vessels and search for weapons. We fear violence could erupt just as it did last year.
We are seeking your active participation in finding a resolution that prevents violence. On April 21, Ambassador Susan Rice, the United States’ representative to the United Nations, stated, “[t]he recent seizures of advanced weaponry underscore that Israel has clear security interests regarding cargo bound for Gaza”, and she urged member states to “use every legal means at their disposal to discourage additional flotillas to Gaza”. We echo those remarks and hope that your government can help work out a mechanism with Israel to allow legitimate humanitarian assistance to go to Gaza without provoking a needless confrontation. We are confident that Israel, as it has in the past, will continue to allow such aid to flow subject to appropriate security screening. By finding a constructive solution as an alternative to another flotilla, you have a unique opportunity to potentially save lives and be a force for stability at a particularly volatile time.
Sincerely,
36 members of Congress
Reading this post was disheartening. to say the least.
The Board members, especially because CUNY is a public institution, should give their students, faculty and the public better than they received The members presented themselves as spineless wonders; devoid of commitment, opinion and the ability to speak. Isn't that why they're there. So much for Board involvement and questioning minds. They are a disheartening group!
As for Jeffrey S. Wiesenfeld, he distorts information, is dishonest and a bully; which every Board member is well aware of. Would he be listened to without challeng if his plea didn't rely on "lack of support for Israel", "criticism of Israel" anti-Semitic thoughts, defining the accused as anti semitic? Probably not! I bet he's a one issue, one interest person; his life revolving around coming up with people and actions he labels "anti semitic" seeing and hearing what he wants to see and hear.
Tony Kushner deserves better! The faculty and students should bestow their own special honor and tribute to Kushner. It would certainly be more meaningful than an award from the inept Board. The Board must write him a letter of apology which will be read at their next meeting broadcast over the CUNY network
How can this be allowed to continue day after day???
It only continues with my country's support, that's how. It makes me ashamed. Thankfully it also makes me angry enough to speak out and speak loudly.
It's now possible to document Israel's actions with video and photos...hopefully the true stories will make their way to the outside world...and wake it up to Israel's crimes. Thank god for the ISM, their dedication and the new website and facebook page..
The terrorist Israeli soldiers are kids given enormous power...knowing there will be no consequences for their actions, unless they should steal and use someone's credit card.
The soldiers are cowards and bullies of the worst kind...attaching peaceful people in their homes and as they non-violently demonstrate. Is a life that's free.... too much to ask? Not one Palestinian weapon or act of aggression was seen on that video. Their weapons are their voices, their feet and their commitment .... walking toward those armed soldiers/terrorists....chanting for their right to freedom...they're determined and they will not give up.
Kieth, thanks for the excellent post.
Shingo, A late response to you: I may have misunderstood you...Were you inferring Israel was using White phosphorus for smoke-screen purposes??? Yes the smoke screen use is not against the laws of war. Israel was using it in populated areas, which is against the laws of war...and human decencies! They used it to injure and do away with people ....not as smoke screens nor to defoliate shrubs, weeds and underbrush!! Is that a war crime? Perhaps you need to see the burns.
The USA used white phosphorus during the Iraq war....something we should be ashamed of...we, as Israel, were using it in populated areas.
Speaking of chemicals; remember "defoliation" during the Vietnam War?
Kellen0685, you are an optimist or have on rose colored glasses. Israel insisted they didn't use white phosphorus during Operation Cast Lead. Pictures of the bombing clearly show white phosphorus falling from the sky. Haven't seen pictures of recent bombings but expect they look the same.
While in Gaza shortly after Operation Cast Lead we saw its results .......
numerous children with severe burns. My Congressman, who was in the Iraq war, looked at a picture of a little girl with horrible burns, immediately shook his head saying "white phosphorous" The child had been in her home, a ivilian areas!
The exhibit "A Child's View from Gaza", drawn by Gazan Children, has drawings clearly depicting white phosphorous falling from the sky. The children were in civilian areas.
Israel denied/lied using this illegal substance during Operation Cast Lead...They are not known for their truthfukness. I wouldn't trust current statements as being truthful even from Harrets
Earlier Nevada Ned wrote:
"Discussions about the Israel/Palestinian conflict have been largely limited to Jews and Arabs. It is essential that the discussion be enlarged to include the 97% of the US population who are neither Jews or Arabs.
If that happens, it will have a transformational effect on the debate"
How right you are NN. Americans who are neither Jews or Arabs could care less about I/P (born again christians are an exception). It's an unfortunate truth...pressured to appear informed they side with Israel..... thanks to AIPAC's influence on the press and Congress. Attempting to enlighten or debate people who are asleep is a lost cause. It calls for too much thinking!
There needs to be campaign telling Americans about the billions of dollars, US dollars... tax money.... that's given to Israel. It's a FACT and can be proven. Americans are very concerned about taxes...no one likes to have their money stolen. Wake them up!!
American tax payers won't be pleased. Encourage them to be vocal....tell everyone they know...For those especially outraged, explain how simple it is to pester their elected officials...demand attention from the press.
Once that ball begins to roll they'll be ready for listening, discussing, using their brain. They'll want to become involved in the I/P discussion and another ball will begin to roll.
It is unfortunate the UN"s report has been come "the Goldstone Report". It IS NOT the Goldstone Report, which been lost in the shuffle. I'm sure many, if not most, people who know there was a "Goldstone" think it's his report and report don't realize it was written by four people. There there were three other commissioners ...who even knows their names?
We are dealing with The UN Fact-Finding Commission on the Gaza Conflict. I believe everyone involved would be better off....save Israel (where to put Judge Goldstone I have no clue) if it were the known by another shortened title. What about "UN Gaza Conflict Commission", "The UN Commission on the Gaza Conflict" Goldstone would be the Chairman, no more, no less.
The fact that Israel is not mentioned in the Commission title makes it appear it's "Gaza's conflict" and who's the conflict with? When most people are filled with un-truths about Gaza, They're apt to jump to the conclusion.....once again those terrorist Palestinians are causing trouble and violence.
How about "UN Fact-Finding Commission on Operation Cast Lead"? Maybe " Israel's peration "Cast Lead thoe Crisis." It could be known as the "Cast Lead Report" A totally different picture comes to mind. Even "Gaza and Israel's During Operation; Cast Lead." is a much better title....it brings Israel into the conflict.
"Goldstone Report" focuses on the man....not what is being investigated. HE becomes the focus. I'm certain it would have made it much more difficult to have the current conflict escalate to today's current level....even with Israel putting forth it's money and campaign to ruin the report.
Would the media, maybe, have sought out the opinion of the other three members of the commission earlier? Wouldn't it be easier to ask questions that include the entire report, not just a very small part?
I may be way off base...or a little off base......but I believe "Goldstone Report" gives the man too much recognition, power and credit. It's made it possible for the focus of the report to become distorted.
Unfortunately, the "Goldstone Report" maybe drummed out of the UN which would indeed be sad and wrong
Jehan....words can not express the impact of your letters....may those addressed: read, understand and act on them for the good of Palestine.
You are a truly gifted young woman...continue to write, take photographs, have courage and work for unity and freedom of your country.
Thank you for sharing so much of yourself. Palestine is in my daily thoughts; beginning today, those thoughts and prayers include Jehan Al-Farra....the two cannot be separated.
Would it be possible for Egypt and Gaza to build additional crossings?
Why does everything and every possibility have to be good for Israel?????
Perhaps disarming Israel would create peace in the Middle East. It would certainly bring more peace than disarming Palestinians.
When is a militant not a militant? Perhaps when he's an Israeli settler?....If everyone in Israel is required to serve as a militant; doesn't that make it a country filled with militants?..
Why are some people obsessively focused on Palestinians? There are few militants. Those who are have weapons that rate less than one on a scale of one to ten; they have no army, no air force, no navy, no nuclear weapons.
Who is the real threat?
Potsherd2 where did you hear the information about the students? That is fantastic. So many students lost scholarships because they were denied exit visas and if they were told they could leave they had so many hoops to jump through and impossible demands to meet they never made it out.
How I hope Egypt emerges as a strong country....able to resist Israel and US demands. They are in a position to change their relationship with Gaza; if they do that and Gaza has some support what will emerge? Can the changes in the middle east cause Israel to rethink their their attitude towards the countries around them and the Palestinians? How can they continue along there merry way while all around them are looking at new paths? These are amazing times.
Obama needs to return to Egypt and find himself!
Taxi, not to worry, my skin is thicker than most. I know Fuster's delight is steering comments to Fustervilleo, the wrong direction...he's a tad self centered. And has a very one way mind....wait until he smashes into one of Festervills concrete security fences.
Today his ability to derail(through his garbage) comments about Sareena's beautifully tender story made me furious. Hi's the bottom of the barrel and i wanted to make him vanish and take his barrel with him.
I din't understand your last sentence in your first comment, searched for a translation" ...So what do I do, complain to you about what you're doing. Sorry !
Do wish Philip, Adam and group would figure out a simple way to say "comment removed"....hey, that was simple!
Beautiful! Shameeha, thank you so very much. Your story will return to me each time I smell the thyme in my garden. Again, Thank you.
Now for Taxi, why, after such a beautiful story, did you have to encourage fuster's participation....his links were probably the last thing readers needed or wanted to have pushed into their thoughts. Please, you pulled me down from a soft cloud of beautiful moments and memories. Your comment was not appropriate!
There is work to be done..
#1...the media must begin covering the Israel Palestine issue fairly!!!-without that, to me, there will be little if any change in the public eye.
Absurd! If it weren't so tragic it might be funny. And we'll look stupid once again.
The UN should have regulation stating a country's veto power is lost after being used x number of times to protect Israel and/or make yourself look stupid.
Amazing!!! well deserved outcome for the people of Egypt who have shown us much in 18 short, very long, days. Who could have imagined the events witnessed and their success today in ousting Mubarak?
The revolutionaries set in motion a spark, igniting the country's desire for freedom. Given the fear Egyptians experienced and were threatened with during for the past thirty years it's an unbelievable accomplishment.
Egypt must receive our support while they build a new Egypt. For those of us in the US, it demands open expression to Obama and our other leaders ....they must support Egypt's freedom..... leaving Israel's cries for "loyalty" and "security" out of the picture.
...my god! what an exciting time.! Admiration and thanks are due to the wonderful young Egyptians who began this revolt....they are brave, committed, inspiring....so much so that thousands and thousands of middle aged and older Egyptians, frozen for years by fear of Mubarak, finally openly join them. Their common bond, love of their country and the desire for freedom.
The Egyptians have taught all of us a lesson. Determination, commitment and total belief in what you are doing can accomplish what was deemed impossible! They began with love for their country and were able to bring down a mountain.
Congratulations Egypt! May you enjoy freedom and democracy.
"There are reports of discontent in areas where tourism is an economic mainstay, but that’s unavoidable.'
Last week I spoke with a young Egyptian friend. He and friends opened a small inexpensive hotel in Downtown Cairo. It was doing surprisingly well and he'd quit his job to work there full time. Bookings were solid weeks in advance.....now, all those reservations have been canceled. He said sadly the hotel would probably fold.
I was aware it was almost impossible for him to join the demonstrations, I still asked if he's been demonstrating. He reply "no"...."BUT I agree with them 100%. They're doing what's right. Maybe Egypt will be saved, I hope so. I will loose five years of my life if my hotel closes. I don't want that to happen; maybe it must happen. If we have freedom, if we have democracy.....what's good for all Egypt is most important." He is probably an exception to others in the tourist trade....
Egyptians exhibit much love for their county. They're willingly making huge sacrifices in hopes Egypt will gain freedom; become a democracy.
Doesn't sound like a bad virus to me.
I wish I was surprised by this...I'm not!
When people begin personal attacks and other forms of intimidation they are often worried they'll loose control of a situation or group. They are hopeful their intimidation will frighten and stop people; people who have a very good chance of changing things...changing the balance of power among Jews.
It's difficult to wake people up...bring/cause awareness. The awareness about the crimes being carried out in Israel and the actions of Zionists...their attitude towards people other than Zionists...their visible hatred of Palestinians shouldn't be explained away or ignored.
Change must come; for it to happen successfully, Jewish voices in favor of it must be .heard loud and clear.
It is encouraging to see that "made in the USA" on weapons is finally being exposed and exciting to hear it being met with outrage and the anger........ even by Americans.
Those ugly american made weapons have been used by Israel for years and years. In 2004 Israeli soldiers shot tear gas into the midst of our peaceful demonstration. That was a shock, we'd been totally peaceful.......more shocking was finding "made in USA" stamped with pride on the teat gas canisters fired at us.
Thanks to the Egyptians for bringing it to the attention of the TV cameras covering their brave revolution....now the fact has waltzed its way into American homes. Lets hope the people were watching and got the picture.
It's not a pretty one!
Thanks you mondoweiss for the wonderful coverage of Egypt's revolution; it's been outstanding!
Thanks Felice!! Have been wondering how things in Cairo were as seen by Felice...great account! I'm a bit jealous; would like to be there too. Keep us posted!
And...can we forget about Witty??? He's not worth space he dominates.
Felice's post, Egypt...amazing Egypt and all that's happening are much more interesting and important!
What an upsetting video....but with no surprises. The closest thing to a surprise was that soldiers were talking about what they and others in the IDF did during Operation Cast Lead.
The soldiers followed orders given by their superiors. One felt this relieved him of accountability....of war crimes. Another soldier questioned his actions...he'd spent 30 seconds of watching and identifying with a man only to shoot him seconds later...the senseless shooting of chickens He questioned his accountability, looked for some type vindication.
Israeli officials released a statement, quoted in this post. Justification for Israel's actions? 12,000 missiles raining down on Israel from Gaza..(many were rockets not missiles)...An Israeli officer's term used to describe the "war'...disproportionate!!! What an understatement! How in the world can those rockets and missiles from Gaza compare? Insight from such a blood bath of destruction? The rockets can't be guided towards a target, they've left minimal damage, they have killed or injured few (though one death is one too many) how can they lead to something as horrific as Operation Cast Lead?
Perhaps more soldiers like the third one will come forward, speak out, change minds. He identified with the family whose house they occupied, felt guilty about the damage, the destruction of personal belongings. He left them a letter of apology...he appeared to agonize about what the Israeli army was doing.
The world must question Israel's motives; their illegal actions and voice their opposition. The time for speaking out; holding Israel accountable is long over due!!
The lack of US (our government) support of US citizens (that's us)....who question or contradict Israel is unfortunately no surprise. It is a sad state of affairs when another country...their citizens and especially soldiers receive automatic belief, support and assistance from the US rather than helping her own citizens.....as should happen
You become a second or third class citizens in the eyes of our government when you question Israel...if fact unless you support Israel, her policies and practices forget about receiving anything in the way of help from the US Embassy..... you will receive grief or be ignored.
The stories told by Americans who've crossed or challenged Israel...all concur; the US Embassy and Government leaves her citizens high and dry.
Americans participating in the Freedom Flotillas were kidnapped/arrested by Israel and never saw anyone from their Embassy....and they watched as other countries sent officials to visit their citizens and see they are being treated fairly.
US citizens may as well not have an embassy in Israel......Is it possible to change this situation?
Thank you Lillian, you've giving us a message we all need to hear and you have written it beautifully.
Children are our future...they must be respected, nurtured and protected.
They are traumatized by the present....will they survive to see a future?
Jen, what a moving and beautiful video. Thank you. Sincere thanks to the Awajah family for sharing their story...their lives....their sorrow with us. The loss of their son is tragic.....
I to was in Gaza four months after Operation Cast Lead. Yes, the courage and resilience of the people shines through....they are amazing peaceful people. Palestinians are being killed and tormented by Israel, a country with people who should know better.
Not only is it hysterical, it's crazy. Funny, funny, funny!
Phil you need to get a grip on reality....all marriages have problems and are difficult...mainly because they involve two individuals... There are differences...Jewish and non-Jewish hasn't cornered the market. Now, in my own unholy, problematic marriage it's American and non-American ....First problem, I speak "American" and he speaks English.
Lighten up......aren't all notes left on cars anti-Semitic?
Felice, Thank you for your report.... your details, accuracy and honesty come through loud and clear as always. What happened and is happening makes me so angry I could throw stones!
Until the US media is forced to report accurately....people will continue to believe the young boys throwing stones are the aggressors; the Israeli soldiers need to defend themselves.
The distance between soldiers and demonstrators, especially those throwing stones, make it obvious .....stones can't travel far enough to reach the soldiers....and they're no match for the weapons being used by Israel....whose weapons are powerful and can travel long distances..
Does anyone have statistics about demonstrations? the number of Soldiers as well as the Palestinian and International demonstrators. How many soldiers has been hit, injured or killed by thrown stones? And how many Palestinians and International supporters have been hit, injured or killed by IOF...their tear gas, sound bombs, guns? I'm certain the figures are totally imbalanced. The media should take a look.....
Felice, stay safe my friend!
Tragic! How can this madness continue?? How can we stop it.
The writing here is so clear and true....a tragedy!
"Please help Gazans and Palestinians everywhere! " They must receive our help and support.
Fantastic! Philip and Adam, for all you bring to us....Thank You!! Your writing and dedication....plus comments and posts by others..... make Mondoweiss about the best source going for I/P news and opinion.
My day is not complete without a "Mondoweiss fix"....in fact it's become an addiction. A very positive habit.
Again, thanks!
Sumud, The exhibit was seen in Vermont in September as part of an arts week end. Comments? Shock, sadness, anger because children are subject to the abuse....in awe of the artistic abilities of the children...expressing such difficult sights and emotions. The above comments weren't from Vermont but from people in PA.
MRW will follow up about using pictures on buses....thanks!
Please email me at: achildsview1@gmail.com I'd like to discuss the pictures with you. Thanks, Susan
Annie....you are so right!
I couldn't resist the opportunity to double my donation for a very worth cause. Mondoweiss has certainly given me much more information and good reading and support during the past year than $100 worth.
I was asked "can you really afford that?" The answer is...if you look at my bank account and expenses....including holiday gifts....the answer is "NO" However if I cut down $1, $5 or $10 on each gift I buy...do the same with my groceries, etc. each week this month I'll be closing in on the $100 and by continuing the cutting back during January, I should cover the $100. What better way to arrive at a $200 donation for something I believe in?
Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't do this all year long. Maybe, if I keep it up, I can even go to Gaza in 2011.
Hi Jared, Delighted you are in Gaza and were allowed in so easily.
I hope you'll share information...I am interested in giving it another try and want all the information I can collect. Also I am certain there are others out their thinking about making the trip...your experience will help!
Questions:
Did you go in with a press pass?
Are you a writer with actual writing credits? If you aren't, how do you think it would be for someone "faking" it?
Do you think going in with someone from the Christian Science Monitor helped at the border?
Did you have to visit the US Embassy American Citizen Services to sign away your rights to counsel? Was the fee $50?
When you worked with Adel at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry did she represent a division for the press or for Palestine?
Did you give your papers to the EFM or did the US Embassy send them?
Did you have to have a letter of invitation?
If you could answer these here...that would be wonderful...please add any other information that might be helpful to others making the trip.
I hope your stay is successful....I'm green with envy!
My wife falls for some people; and she can be charming. Later, when it became an issue, she said that she loved the kid because he loved the place he lived in, he was energetic and enterprising, and he was knowledgeable.
Remember your wife "fell for you" and I'd be willing to bet you thought you were a "lucky duck" even though you probably didn't use those words.
Is your wife charming as in manipulative with actions that appear charming? Or is charm a positive and lovely trait she posses naturally?
"Later when it became an issue" An 11 year old boy and a lucky duck...an issue? If you want real issues I will gladly send you some. It's amazing this child and his "lucky duck" comment are an issue and that they can not only change the power balance in your marriage...it may be changed forever.
Obvious "lucky duck" is driving you up the walls...sounds as though it's created a sore spot that easy to irritate....try using "lucky duck" to your
advantage; wife mentions something really interesting...surprising, useful to you..."Hey, I'm a lucky duck" fixes dinner; you enjoy it.."I'm a lucky duck that dinner was terrific" Maybe she does something special..."thanks, I guess I am a lucky duck" ACCEPT IT...you are a lucky duck...take control of the fact and use "lucky duck" positively....
And stop complaining...just do the chores. Remember how your wife likes it when someone's (your 11 year old rival) is energetic, knowledgeable.....I'd add positive, happy, fun....enjoy being a lucky duck!
DARN....I haven't been there in 6 years. I'd like to offer these suggestions.
Some are recent PR opportunities
APPRECIATION of HISTORICAL RESIDENCES: settlers happily sitting in the doorway of their "new residence" an old house taken by force from Palestinians ....caution, settlers guns must be hidden; no Palestinians in photo, especially if they are crying; no guards, police, military visible
GREEN ISRAEL and FAMILY TOGETHERNESS: multi generational shot...proud grand parents and parents supporting their children as they enthusiastically plant trees for a new forest.... caution: make certain no remnants of destroyed homes or Palestinians are in view Enhancement ...photoshop some larger trees in background...indicating an on going family project
TRANSPORTATION: Happy Israelis zipping along on their convenient new highway to their settlement. caution: this may be a tough shot: no Palestinian roads (they look like dirt paths) in view, Palestinians, their homes, or orchards ... they may be included if they are in good shape...no evidence of fire, up-rooting or destruction on surrounding land...almost forgot, hide the guns
RECREATION; Relaxing settlers sitting abound the swimming pool, children cooperating with each other as they frolic and play in the pool; include green lawns and in the background sprinklers watering lawns...this will dispel any worries of water shortages in the settlements...caution, do not include any evidence stolen Palestine water is used.
COMMERCE: Happy workers in a settlement factory making cosmetics.... display products, model applying them. caution: no evidence of connection with Red Sea...some viewers may have heard unfair criticism, best not to remind them
My apologies...the comment was not meant to be such a personal attach....I hit send and then re-read it.
Guns are bad and children with guns are even worse! Truly, I am shocked by your reaction....I do agree you need to come to grips with your Jewishness, how you fit into the tribe...or do you have to give up so much of yourself to be in the tribe you are no longer Philip...or maybe it's the other way around. Please, get in touch!
Those soldiers, boys and girls with guns...they are dangerous, out of control, have power they abuse...I believe they were given that power TO ABUSE.
Go back and look at the video of the seershoots or what ever the hell it's called'...the one with the remote control gunning towers...the female soldier explaining how it works, smiling, using the joy stick, laughing Is she playing a game with live humans??? The damn thing was made by the army..to assure Israelis they will be safe....safe from farmers; farmers on their own land...taken as a buffer zone. Tell me, if you didn't like your neighbors, they were throwing sticks in your yard...you believe you need a buffer zone for safety...you'd have to build it on your own land...wouldn't you.
Please, no one especially you RW, start in about those rockets...sending people to bomb shelters. Fortunately, they have bomb shelters to run to, their neighbors are not so fortunate..If you do bring up the rockets, check the facts and figures on the damage, injury and death they've caused...
start your comment with those facts! compare the figures. I believe all killing is wrong Palestinian and Israeli...and the US.
Those boys and girls should not have guns...be taught from an early age to hate, hate Palestinians...remember the children writing death notes on the missiles guided to a target to kill Palestinians.
Philip, look at your videos of demonstrations...house demolitions...you name it and then tell me what you see those boys with the guns doing...what?
Look at those pictures the children of Gaza drew showing their experiences during Operation Cast Lead....can you see the soldiers with the guns?
Read my post that went up today.....I know diplomacy is involved.....but read about the killing, burning....couls young boys with guns been party to that.?
When I went to Gaza people asked about my being afraid...no I wasn't....where was I afraid, Israel, Jerusalem...the old city, the west bank, check points, in homes, almost every where all the time. Why? Those boys and girls with the guns!
I had intended to post this experience...I must add it as a comment to the suffering Agnon wrote of...
A few nights ago here in Cairo I began a conversation with a young man, a new resident. When I asked where he was from his reply...I was born in Sweden, I am Palestinian from Gaza. Immediately I began my sad tale of trying to enter Gaza.
He listened with patiences. He then told me he was here, with his parents, trying to have his wife released from Gaza, she has a Swedish Visa, so she may return to Sweden with them. "We love each other, we just want to be together." This was their third try...the first they were here three months, the second one month. It's been more than a year they've tried. "My parents are here, they would love to meet you"
The next evening he takes me to their room....coffee, tea, Palestinian cookies appear from no where. They have lived in Sweden for more than 40 years...they left Gaza because of fear...it was dangerous, no place to be...We discussed the I/P problem, what's happening, not happening..."It will only be ended by the US...the US has to do it, no one else, no one else can." I talk about my trip to the West Bank, my surprise that there were many Jewish groups in the US and Israel opposed to what the Israeli government, is doing. The father says, "It's not the Jews, it's the Zionistas,,,the settlers now. In the US, do the Jews know? Know what's being done?" I learn conditions in Sweden are becoming threatening for Palestinians, Muslims ....it was not that way before.
I bring up my passion...the children in Gaza...the art exhibit my friend Joyce and I are developing..."A Child's View from Gaza" drawings created my the children; art therapy; experiences during "Operation Cast Lead"
The father's appearance...especially his facial expression...he looks fearful, sad, in excruciating pain....his voice trembled...
and he began his story..."the children"...he repeated a number of times..I was a child, just a child six years, six years and they came....long pause...they came and they, they burned everything.....flames all around even the ground....we ran and ran...my parents were somewhere, I was left running by myself....my parents were gone. My feet were burned, look, look here, here and here, I was only six years old...a child...no one take care of me, no clothes, no bath, on the street only a child. He said he was alone for six weeks I wonder if it was that long, don't question. How did you find your parents? My father found a man with a very strong voice...he called for me, house to house, on the street. They found me.
When I am older they come again, take the men, boys, boys over...(I can't remember the age) I was big for my age...I wore short pants so they would not take me with the older boys...my father hid...others his...many were shot....It was, not a good time. We cannot go to Gaza, it is our home, my father's home, my grandfather's home our home for hundreds of years...and we cannot go home.
I think....Susan, these people...what they've gone through, what they continue to go through...suffering, suffering, suffering.....please, let their daughter in law...their son's wife come to them...They are so hopeful...so full of love for this girl.....please god, if you are there let this girl come to them. And Susan, your hopes of going to Gaza....your hopes....Having heard their story I realize how insignificant I am.
And Agnon.? Argnon was a writer!...not an old man spilling his story as he sat on his bed in a hotel... suffering by people, individuals, even those from a tribe... does not give a government the right to be evil...it doesn't explain their "suffering" Individuals suffered...not the Israeli government. And most of the suffering narrative is a story handed down from another generation.
The stories I heard were told by those suffering...trying to live....their suffering caused by a government that represents people who should know better.
Thanks Kathleen for your observations and thoughts and special thanks for including Mandela's letter. How true it is!
It is difficult to know what to say in response to this post...
Why? lack of care for humanity....we...many individuals and venturing a guess, all world leaders know why. Yet they do nothing or at best very little. How? ditto the answer for why. When? When ever Israelis feel like it...military, police, border patrol, "guards", settlers, ...individuals.
How? Guns, rockets, missiles, bombs, white phosphorus, cars, bulldozers, delays at check points, failure to provide medical treatment, malnutrition, neglect on the part of their jailers and most of us .....
Thank god for Phillip and Adam others like them.
As for myself, Siyan's statement, "If you want to solve this problem you have to take it on as a job, not a hobby" is racing through my mind, my body. As I sit in my cheap little hotel in Cairo...unable to get to where I was going, the time has come for me to take on this problem with full time involvement... It will take me out of retirement, a full time job, even though I won't receive a salary. (I hope it counts) This problem is too important to be thought of as a hobby by anyone, especially a Palestinian.
Annie, thanks. good point. Do you think using the term "Arabs" distances Israelis from the fact they are, for the most part, on land that was or is Palestinian land? If they call them "Palestinians"...there must have been and is a Palestine, which is ignored.
"Over and over, I heard that Israelis are just tired of it all" "The Arabs should take more responsibility in the peace process"
Who are "the Arabs"? I think that's the only time in the post you referred to Arabs.
If the Israelis are "tired of it all" What about the Palestinians? They've had their land stolen, their people imprisoned with out charges, their movement drastically curtailed, their business closed, their farms, orchards and greenhouses destroyed, their homes destroyed or taken over by Israelis...soldiers protect these Israelis as they carry on their illegal activities ....the list goes on and on.
And the Israelis? Why aren't the settlers seen as Israelis? ... Is it possible that Israel's "separation" from settlers by the media and others, causes the public (US public) to forget settlers are Israelis. I believe this gives Israel an "out" when they want one, "this was done by the settlers" To me, one of the most disturbing aspects of the conflict is the constant invasion, actually permanent presence, of Israeli military and police in Palestinian land...defending their people. If settlers weren't Israelis would this happen?
I believe they are '"legal" terrorists.
As I see it Palestinians are rarely separated from Hamas. Unfortunately and unfairlyPalestinians are too often thought of as terrorists, violent; when only a small number are party to violent actions. Many of my friends and family worried about my trip to Gaza because "Palestinians are violent"..as in Hamas, not militant members of Hamas or Palestinians who may be violent. One of my greatest concern is Israel's terrorists in the form of their military.
I truly wonder if peace talks are peace talks when Israel has almost all the bargaining chips. Negotiations involve give and take...what does Palestine have to bargain with? How can they take "more responsibility in the peace process" under those circumstances? Even without the US as the trump in this card game; the scales weigh in Israel's favor.
Rachel..I have found your posts interesting, looked forward to reading them....at times you seem to have held back on your thoughts and positions...specifically, if they changed how and why? If they remained the same...how and why. I'd like to more!
Gentrification? You have to be kidding...low cost land...since when did Israel pay for the land? They just take it house and all or better yet bulldoze it, don't even worry if people are living there or at home.
Thank you, thank you, thank you....Phil your report is so well written, true and it so very sad.....Life get's more impossible for Palestinians each day yet they carry on with dignity and do not disappear as Israel would have them do.
It is good to hear your anger and passion return full force...your reports are always strong...you are sounding as you did in Gaza. Outrage! The difference in emotion is Israel and Israelis weren't visible in Gaza...just the aftermath of their destruction and cruelty. Where you are now the contrast between the takers and the taken is clear.
And Israel would have us believe it speaks for all Jews. It must become easier for Jews and non-Jews to criticize Israel without fear of the consequences doled out by Zionists and non-Zionists. No other group or country carves out and enjoys the protection Israel has over criticism, legitimate criticism.
What they have done and continue to do to the Palestinians is beyond horrific! I doubt the Holocaust would have been so easily "hidden" had TV been a means of communication. How can what is happening to the Palestinians be hidden? They are subject to destruction, death, ethnic cleansing, theft, burning, home demolition and it is not seen...it's ignored.
Your RAGE is needed, Mr Weiss!
Potsherd: what is self defense?
Should Israel's twisted, immoral definition of "self defense" be adopted as THE definition of self defense or should we, the rest of the world, finally wake up from our slumber and get back to determining definitions from reliable dictionaries, sources not Israel's. Israel must be challenged; held accountable to international standards and their practice of playing by their own set of rules and definitions no longer tolerated.
During the past six months, in fact the past 18 months, has been, if not shooting themselves in the foot shooting close enough for the dust to settle on their toes. And the world has not needed a magnifying glass to see this.
Unfortunately Palestinians are believed to be terrorists. Israel has defined them as terrorists. Also, for many people their point of reference for Palestinians is the killing of the Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics...a terrorist act...performed by Palestinian terrorists..played over and over again, step by step on television....reinforcing the thought that Palestinians are terrorists...all of them. Israel has certainly capitalized on that, turning the thought into belief.
The shooting of the settlers can do nothing but hurt the Palestinian cause. It was a misguided act by thugs...not freedom fighters. If the shooters think their act makes them appear as heroes they should think again. At a time when it appears Israel's factions may be causing the country to head for self destruction. It is also a time when the world and American Jews are beginning to seriously question Israel. Palestinians should seize the moment, put differences aside and develop united strategies to begin gaining world support. They need positive PR.
Shooting civilians does nothing to further a positive opinion of Palestinians.
No reasons were given. I was told by others I needed to be on the Egyptians approved list; that I should go to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry; explain my request, present my papers, offer an additional reference and I should be put on the list.
Well, I went to the Ministry, went to gate one, was told to go to gate three where I was told to go to gate one. Bingo I was admitted to a security office where they spoke no English (I do need to speak Arabic) Finally the man I was dealing with made some phone calls and found a woman who knew what I wanted and what she was talking about.
There's a new boss and new rules. She cannot deal directly with people wanting to go to Gaza....now, all the information must be submitted by an Embassy, I need to go to the US Embassy and have them submit my documentation. I need an appointment...first available one, Sept 14. Guess who's going to her Embassy first thing tomorrow? Will keep you posted. (I am exhausted...stopped fasting, brain was turning to mush and right now I need energy and a clear head)
Sumud, first'''thanks for the good wishes, I need them.
As near as I can determine what I lack is having my name appear on a list of those approved by Egypt for entry. I'm certain Israeli involvement factors into this but no one says. In fact no one says much of anything!
I have my notarized affidavit from the US Embassy stating I am aware I will have no rights to counsel if I enter Gaza. I also have a letter of invitation from UNRWA to work on the MECA water purification project. Dr Mona El Farra directs the project (I will be staying with her) and I wish they'd put her name on the letter.
Mona tried all the contacts she has in Gaza and thought I had been put on the list but no such luck.
Tunnel entrance is out of the question. I just couldn't do it and you are right returning would be a nightmare.
The up side of all of this is I'm having a wonderful cultural experience I would never have had had I gotten in to Gaza the first or second time. Truly my time in Egypt has been amazing and I'm fortunate; it's almost as though I've received a bonus. I refuse to see it as a consultation prize.
That said, I am a very patient and determined lady; I am going to make it to Gaza!
Susan
Chu....There is no way Philip should have waited to hear what the guy had to say....chances are he wouldn't have talked, he'd scream. Anyone who carries on the way he is described as doing can't be trusted. Stopping in the middle of the interstate is insane...there 's a good chance the guy is a psycho...or just the type person who'd have a Luger in his lunch box. He certainly put his passengers at risk as well as Philip and his wife.
Philip should have called the police and reported the driver (actually the bus #) to the bus company.
Could it be the driver of the bus was Benjamin Netanyahu ? Sounds as though his actions and temperament mirror Israel's top guy.
Expecting you and everyone else to get out of his way....
Believing and acting as though he owns the road....
Risking the lives of everyone on the road....
Bullying...
Expecting you to do what he wants, which you did, then wanting more......
Being predictably un-predictable: slowing down then slamming to a halt in the middle of the highway...
Totally lacking good judgement or respect for others....
Breaking all the rules.....
And I'm sure if he were asked he'd say he was the victim...
Should his driving and road rage be brought up he'd cry he was being treated with anti-bus-driver-isim.
So Philip...you're right...you were wrong! Consider this guy dangerous!!
Lillian, Thank you for sharing your harrowing story so beautifully. I too am a grandmother who hopes for peace...shouts for peace, justice and equality.
While in the West Bank in 2004 I witnessed young Israeli soldiers taunt, humiliate and abuse Palestinians. Their feelings of superiority and entitlement were as obvious as the guns they carried. They reeked of power...power given and instilled in them at such a young age. They could be the "brown shirts" you speak about.
While in Gaza last May these young Israeli soldiers were not to be seen. (I was relieved they would not be there) ....What was seen was destruction left by those very same soldiers when they unmercifully carried out "Operation Cast Lead." It was a traumatic sight. Becoming better informed of the inhuman conditions forced on the people of Gaza was equally traumatic...loss, loss and more loss...in every aspect of their lives: health, home, employment, freedom. Perhaps the most shocking loss is the forced confinement in Gaza....Palestinians in Gaza are stuck in a prison; their jailers hoping one day they will conduct a "head check" and find the prison empty of life. Their prisoners, weary of the oppression and snuffed out dreams, have disappeared.
Israel does not have a moral army...let alone the most moral army in the world. How can any army, or a navy or air force be considered moral? A look at the West Bank and Gaza proves them to be immoral. I submit that their government is immoral as well.
Lillian, I wish you and your fellow travelers safety and success as you sail to Gaza. I know why you go. I leave for Gaza August 24. It was not a difficult decision to make!
Way to go Laura...that was difficult for you and senseless on the part of Israeli security. I believe it's more of a game and power play than anything . I may be totally off base, though. How the Palestinians maintain their calm manner, self respect and dignity is beyond me. I certainly admire them.
My own experience with security was at Ben Gurion Coming in a member of our group was detained and naturally, we waited for her instead of going on as we'd been instructed. Just as we were finally going to leave a very tall man approached...are you Susan? Is there a problem? are you Susan? I really don't understand...Come with me! I was damned it I was going to say my name; he knew it anyway. They checked my bag but not thoroughly and then said wait here. One of the tactics is the waiting and moving you around ...it causes your mind to play tricks as you think and wonder.. After about an hour and a half I was free! My friend was detained about 7 or 8 hours.
Leaving Ben Gurion involved endless lines and kids in uniform, masquerading as security professionals, asking questions about where did you go, what did you do, over and over and over again. That went on until the very last line; I could see the check in counter, suite cases travelling along the conveyor belt ready to fly away. The questions begin again: where did you go?, what did you do?, etc. then, do you have children? well yes (what the hell, why is she asking that?) How many? two (darn I should have said ten) What are their names?.. What does this have to do with anything? What are their names? I know I don't have to tell you that! She leaves, talks to her supervisor, then returns. What are your children's names? Sam and Mary (obviously not true) You need to go stand in that line....which is very long and leads to the very large x-ray machine scanning bags. After they pass through the machine they come out where tables and more kids are waiting to search your bags.
I knew my bag was going to cause a problem. I had visited a UN office and was given a beautiful commemorative book marking 25 years of an archeology project between the UN and Palestine. It was in English and Arabic. I debated sending it home DHL, yet the more I thought about doing that the madder I got at Israel and myself....if I mailed the book home, they'd succeeded in intimidating me; they'd won. The beautiful book was packed in my suit case...it was not contraband and I would not treat it as such.
They went crazy over the book: first the kid, then a man wearing a white shirt and then a man with a necktie. I was pleasant and dumb causing them to ask a question numerous times before I understood. They were angry I didn't know Hebrew and said I should learn it....oh I'm really terrible at learning languages...I was afraid they were going to confiscate my book and was trying to decide what I'd do if they did.
Finally after about 30 minutes I was motioned toward the check in desk. All went smoothly...I was being handed my passport and ticket when a long arm reached over my shoulder and took them. The man wore a suit, this was serious business. Weren't you detained upon arrival? No! Oh wait you must be referring to the woman you detained...she was giving us directions and asked one of the security men to tell us we'd have to find our own way.
I decided they wouldn't want to pay to send me home when I had a perfectly good ticket...they'd just play that sit, wait, quiet your brain, move to another seat.....until the plane made its last boarding call.
I will not be visiting Israel again or using it as a transportation hub. I am obviously in their computer probably as a loony tune rather than a terrorist.
I should learn it's best to just keep my mouth shut....but they make me so horribly angry I just can't do it.
I wonder what Israel's unemployment rate would be if they did away with all those kids in security, teen age soldiers, police and border patrol?
What a delight!! It made my day; which had been bad, bad, bad. Someone hacked into my email account...everyone thinks I'm in Wales and need $1,500
Could use the money but I am not in Wales.
The video is brilliant. I wish it had been longer, Thanks for the treat!
Are parents who encourage, push, expect their children to enter the military "protective parents"..... the military does most of the killing of the innocent.
And when their military child dies in the line of "duty"...these same parents glorify the death and their child...who is now a hero to be celebrated. How can these parents be considered protective? Or to care for their child...they encouraged him/her to take the path that lead to their death...and the death of others.
Now what about a country that "protects" all their children It's done strangely by requiring they serve in the military? It's sad Israel doesn't protect or care for its children.
Mr Witty...are you so wrapped up in your own little sheltered world that you don't know the purpose of the Audacity of Hope? Are you unable to read? Or do you pick and choose what you read in posts here??
The above article states the purpose of the US boat and the flotilla as well as the method of protest they will use. So what don't you get??
Israel is exerting collective punishment over the people in Gaza.
The have created an open air prison...it worse than a prison which i discussed with Philip before we left Gaza....check out the archives.
Israel consistently ignores international law; thumbing their nose at it.
Witty, are you a US citizen? In case you are and you've missed the news...Israel's done a pretty good job of thumbing their nose at your president over the past few months. Does that bother you? If not, perhaps you're living in the wrong country.
So, please read the post in its entirety...if I thought you could do it with an open mind I would ask for that, but I believe that's beyond your capability. Read the post and answer your own questions. Pretend it's a test...an open book test.
It could provide a moment of enlightenment...just open your eyes.
Annie, Since I'm headed to Gaza in 23 days...could you let me know how I can get on the Hamas "wined and dined list"?
Organized religions are one of my least favorite things.
#1, They believe there beliefs are The Belief.
#2 They are better than everyone else because they've found "The Way". #3 Many, but not all, are out to convert you and the rest of the world.
#4 Their God forgives if you ask ...therefore you can be a total jerk and all's forgiven and forgotten ...over and over again; just say you're sorry.
#5 God choses some groups of people over others ....even though he's fair. #6 Most have a holy book recording "the word" written hundreds of years ago, translated many times...by who? men out to prove a point.
#7 most of their rituals true and holy are based on pagan practices...having nothing to do with God.
#8 ...I can't go on...I'm getting really angry. If I use bad language., become deliberately offensive, etc....I have no one to forgive me. (but myself)
The arrogance of believing you are chosen people, due entitlement and above question is criticism drives me wild. What % of wars and injustice are based on religious differences or have God's blessing?
Back to the wine and dine with Hamas, isn't alcohol forbidden by Islam?
Speaking of changing history...Don't forget that Arlen Darlin Spector our wonderful PA Senator offered an official explanation of Kennedy's assassination with his "single bullet theory" Perhaps he could examine the evidence surrounding the six missing passengers of the Turkish ship and come up with a theory about that. Maybe they were raptured!
It's very strange there is no mention of them by Israel, Turkey, the US, the Freedom Flotilla...no one. Why isn't anyone investigating who they were, where they were from and what the hell happened to them. They must be a large piece of an interesting puzzle.
Has a country or group enforced silence surrounding the subject? I haven't heard one question asked about them, which is very strange. I would think at least one passenger could shed some light on the subject? Mondoweiss is about the only place I've seen it discussed.
Back to the Mavi Maranara, Israeli soldiers, passengers, truth and unanswered questions.....what ever happened to the six missing passengers? Did they drown, become Israeli hostages, miss boarding at the beginning? Why no answers...apologies if explanations were provided and I missed them. My take is someone must be hiding something, probably Israel. If they never made it aboard the ships I don't think the freedom flotilla wpold have remained silent.
Does anyone have information?
Have not really swwn this discussed and given the title of the post I'd like to add my too sense and receive feedback.
As a former Christian (I am coming out of the closet big-time... some suspect but few have been told point blank) you might want to know that not one of my christian friends,, family or acquaintances would identify themselves as "Christian Zionists". I bet they wouldn't know who you are referring to.
Now, born again Christian, "That's me!" fundamentalist Christian "That's me" "bible believing/centered christian" That's me!" Christian Zionist....I never heard of them! I must admit my sister described herself as an "Orthodox Episcopalian" to which I replied "You're serious? I never heard of them?" (my families religion) Once I refereed to "Jesus freaks" and a very good friend cut in..."That's me!"
They firmly believe "Jews are God's chosen people!!" The Jews are entitled to/must have their chosen place, Israel" ....in preperation for Armageddon.. when these Christians will be raptured. They must support Israel, and to a lesser extent Jews. The bible tels them to! It's a big deal...life's purpose, and as I understand...Jews and Israel make it possible.
These "believers" are a serious group to contend with...listen to their radio programs...they haul in thousands, if not millions of dollars...much of it goes to Christian/Israeli causes.
I have no idea how one contends with them....they are as radical as Jewish Zionists,,,,without the military power to back them up. Ask them, they don't need it...god's on their side!
Don't forget to factor them in when thinking of the US. They are there big time!!
Demonstration: what I saw on the video:
All men except for one woman. Where are the women? If the demonstration is a statement of "unity" shouldn't it include women? shouldn't it reflect age groups in Israel?
I saw a large, very large group of young men (late teems through twenties) "demonstrating"? Well, they could have won the world cup or a similar sporting event...those demonstrations too often turn into riots, especially when the alcohol kicks in, and there are almost always young men.
A word about spontaneity: The internet is certainly an immediate means of communication...it can pass "news" to hundreds or thousands of people in seconds ...saying meet at a certain destination at a certain time...and bring your flag while you at it. To me a spontaneous group just happens a small original group that keeps multiplying. If these young men planned to meet at the corner at an appointed time...it doesn't fit my definition....and if it wasn't planned... where did all those flags come from? Do they carry them in their pockets?
Obviously, I am trying to discredit the statement that it was a spontaneous crowd of thousands signifying the unity of the Israeli people.
People believe what they see and the accompanying narrative or more correctly what they think they saw and heard or what they've been told they saw and heard.....think of all the Israeli "news" put out during the past week that was fabricated.
In no way am I saying that Max's segment/videos/interviews are false. He is a journalist not a TV personality pretending to have a story.
There is certainly a great deal of unity among the people of Israel that their country was right, the IDF was protecting Israel and thereby justified and the freedom flotilla was made up of terrorists.
Saying the video shows or is proof the Israeli people are united is a stretch. I saw a group of excitable young men having a good time; seeing how much rowdy behavior will be accepted; loving being part of the group. There's a name for it but I can't remember it.
Generally when a country or state wins or looses a "battle" the initial reaction of "the people" is showing support for country. My Country, right or wrong.
Let me remind you: Mondowise readers probably don't fall into the "the people" category.
The Washington Post: ...."Everyone or most" may apply to Mondoweiss readers and knowledge of the Washington Post and their propaganda. It certainly doesn't mean "everyone" or "most" in the US....forget it...they don't even know the Washington Post exists.
We aren't using very good sense when saying "everyone" believes, knows, approves, dis-approves. This is a set up for trouble and a false sense of security.
I'm always amazed when someone I thought was knowledgeable about a subject ends up not having a clue. about it....it's even worse for me when I realize they don't care.
This time last year I was in Gaza and in 2004 I was in the West Bank. Where did I feel unsafe? The WEST BANK!! Soldiers, guns, border patrol in jeeps, army jeeps, more soldiers, policemen, policewomen, checkpoints, more soldiers. tear gas, sound bombs, rubber bullets that don't bounce, live bullets being shot over our heads...guns, guns, guns.....shots in the night, jeeps racing through the streets. I was always on edge. Hamas terrorists? NO, Israeli terrorists...disguised and protected as protectors of the Middle East's only democracy. Oh, correction they are refereed to as the IDF.
Gaza, Hamas and government health representatives appeared shortly after we crossed the border into Gaza. We were to have stayed in homes in Rafah, however the decision was made that we should go on to Gaza City and stay in a hotel. Reason? They were concerned about terrorists. Off we went with Hamas escorts in a pick up truck...2 men in the cab, four in the back....all with guns. They were beeping the horn, waving to people, having a grand time...I guess I'd call it fun. After a few miles new escorts would lead the way.
There was a guard stationed at the end of the hotel driveway. One evening another woman and I were going out for a walk in the neighborhood and were turned back. Probably more for cultural reasons than danger.
We heard stories of how Hamas helped residents in Gaza with food, money and other assistance when needed. Where is the aid pledged after the war?
About the children's centers...there are many in Gaza; we visited some. They are run by NGOs or individuals filling a need. I believe most are active year round because the schools are run on half sessions. They have arts, crafts, dance, computers in some, And guecc what every single one thought? ENGLISH!
Fear of Hamas: The staff from a center came in one morning and found all there furniture, supplies, etc. missing....which they attributed to a faction of Hamas. They began a letter writing and telephone campaign to have there supplies returned. They wrote and called Hamas every day....with more and more "protesters" each day. The story went that, after a week, Hamas called and begged "please, no more letters or calls! we will return your furniture and supplies." Which they did....Plus the group hounding them was made up of women.
There are extremist among Hamas....way to the right; just as you find in almost every group or religion. Settlers are a great example of people gone wrong. In the US the Christian right has hundreds of schools which have sprung up since integration. They are not just teaching religion and school subjects; the schools for older kids encourage political action for their Christian beliefs. There is a college for Christian political leaders, I believe in Virginia, who believe they will take over the government.
How many wars have begun because of religious differences....differences to the right.
Back to Gaza. Rarely did I see anyone on the street carrying a gun. In Israel and the West Bank, they were every where. 99% of the time they were carried by the IDF and often they were shooting them....even at a group of 13 women.
The hint of "connection" between UNRWA and Hamas makes me angry! Hamas is the only major organizational sources in Gaza. Is UNRWA supposed to pretend Hamas doesn't exist? Hamas is the government, like it or not. UNRWA is doing more than anyone to hold Gaza together. And they work with Hamas when needed (members of Hamas aren't red with hornes and tails...some may use pitchforks while working in their fields)
IDF soldiers "left" landmines in many of the homes on their trip back to Israel. Teams from the UN and Hamas searched homes removing and detonating the active mines. Is the UN to be faulted for cooperating with Hamas?
Who has convinced so many that everyone and every aspect of Hamas is evil? For openers, try TV news, newspapers... the "peaceful Israeli government? The right wing militants in Hamas can be refereed to as terrorist. I happen to believe any individual or group causing others fear and terror is a terrorist. That includes terrorists made legal and called armies)
"I find the biggest difference being that the unseen majority of Americans (mostly white) not in the civil rights image were very much in their hearts supporting equal rights and against the intolerance and hate"
Randii...wish I could agree. I wonder now if the majority agree. I fear it would be a slim majority. I am always shocked when someone I thought I respected thinks they're "safe," lets their hair down and starts in on civil rights and equal rights...which their group should have but others groups shouldn't. They don't exhibit hatred....just laugh, smirk (like the Israeli boys) and enjoy their cleverness at being so superior.... "these clever people" include elected officials, community leaders, teachers, plumbers, you name it. It's disgusting but true in way too many cases....they many not be the majority but there are millions of them.
Philip, thank you for the brilliant post.
Don, thank you as well....the videos were moving...hopeful... then left me in tears wondering what the hell I can do. I'm trying but know it's not nearly enough.
While speaking to a group in a small town, large by Iowa standards, the peace group (Christians) who came to hear me brought with them "problems" with their Jewish community..."they" wouldn't cooperate or talk. Who would want to talk and cooperate with someone who's face is as angry as those in Little Rock or as taunting and mocking as the Israeli boys? I wrote about what I'd suggested to the Iowa group in a post last week.
The Palestinians and Israelis engaged in peaceful conversation deserve support....that same process should and could be effective here in the US.
Israel/Palestine is huge! Too often time is spent intellectualizing "the problem" when simple, down to the earth and doable alternatives can actually help move closer to a goal. Not solve it...but make some movement. Conversations similar to Interfaith Encounter helped move the Civil Rights Movement.
Hey, what happened to "Phil have a great time in the woods?" "...you're a posting animal" "enjoy your time" there was mention of opossum and comments took off... Your "comment animals" can take a post of going off in to the woods and they are off and running ...not to woods but Israel, California, Germany...
Please: relax, enjoy, rejuvenate.....then it's hit the refresh button
Who knows where your "comment animals' will take us next. That's the fun!
A bit off subject but this is an interesting direction for legal action from Palestine Think Tank.
"The Al Haq case consists of a claim for judicial review before the high court of England & Wales challenging the government of the UK over its failure to fulfil its obligations under international law with respect to Israel's activities in the Occupied Palestinian territories."
link to palestinethinktank.com
Suppose the UK is found by its courts to have failed obligations under international law;what then? Where would that leave Israel? It would be a whole different ball game if the UK (and others) were held responsible for upholding international law.
Citizen, I think you've hit on something to be explored, expanded...."Pro Israeli" agencies....American agencies whose allegiance should be to the US....all sound "UN-American". If they are called on that....questioned before..they start screaming anit-semitism. the public...average citizen of these United States...is reluctant to be labled anti-semitic " I don't want to be labled that or anything! However, the average citizen goes bonkers with anti american comments...allegiance of American citizens to another country is an even larger sin. These two things need to be brought up and hammered home to them...This may not be a nice tactic but look at the pro Isreal tactics.
If you add in the information of US tax dollars flowing across the Atlantic faster than a speeding bullet; the public will also not be pleased. They can become very angry and I truly believe if they knew what Israel's doing and getting....especially $wise ....Israel cozy relationship with the US would change.
It seems Israel has been making a number of mistakes. If we're lucky they will continue. I do believe people are questioning what Israel does, how they do it and the US involvement. If the American public knew how much Israel receives in aid, our tax dollars, they 'd do more than "tea party" There's not a ground swell yet...but blind acceptance the US/Israel relationship and our policies are being questioned more frequently every day.
J Street and the six 6 Congressman are deserving of congratulations and thanks for breaking with tradition and heading to Israel without AIPAC. Ayalon's vindictive and stupid actions are reflective of the country he serves. Has it been in the media? I haven't seen it.
Below is link to an editorial I believe is worth reading....implementing many of the proposals would bring positive change, even with comments on mondoweissm,

Looking at this situation from a down to earth perspective; is Bronner now "embedded" in the IDF?
I always felt that the Bush administration's move of embedding reporters in specific units skewed the reporting from Iraq.
How can a reporter be objective having lived with the someone; become familiar with their beliefs, attitudes, habits, the whole person, even their family...not just the soldier ? It must become a relationship like that of two very close friends; brother and brother; father and son....wait, that sounds familiar.
Conflict of interest? Bias? loss of objectivity? Bronner is able to rise above them? Does he also walk on water?
Richard Parker....thanks! It's excellent film and excellent reporting.
People are shocked when they find out our house is a "no TV zone" They wonder how in the world I manage life with out TV...if our TV offered reports similar to this...I'd consider purchasing one.
Those living in New York, active in the I/P issue or politics know the NYT's reporting favors Israel but the rest of the US is clueless. They look upon information from the Times as being TRUTHFUL; without bias or they scratch it off as being a liberal or leftist newspaper.
Taghreed El-Khodary would be an excellent addition in Jerusalem. We met her in Gaza, all indications pointed to her being an excellent reporter. As I remember, she didn't come right out and say her byline is often missing and her articles are heavily edited by Bonner.......however her careful answering of questions led us to believe that's quite possibly the case.
Rubin: "Palin’s intellectual unfitness in the eyes of Jews was exaggerated during the course of the campaign…"
I don't believe ANYONE can exaggerate Palin's intellectual unfitness!
As a woman, though not Jewish, I find Rubin's comments about Jews, Palin and Down-syndrome offensive and insulting! Her statement about Palin's son Trig not "winning her votes of Jewish women"..I seriously doubt that Trigs Down Syndrome was THE cause of her winning any votes. If it factored in to any woman's voting it was as an "add-on" And I further doubt that any woman did not vote for her because her child has Down-syndrome
The issue was and is ABORTION; the fundamental Christian right.and factions within the Jewish religion who also do not believe in abortion. And that's abortion for any reason! As I said, Rubin's focus on Down syndrome and Trig was insulting!
Cliff I agree! How does Rubin see the unholy alliance between the Jews for Jesus, Christion right, Zionism and the state of Israel
.
Think you got about everything Cliff!
Where did Witty go?
No one said Jews or Israelis as a rule harass minorities....
In the US and south...as a rule all whites didn't harass blacks...and freedom riders. Most did not! Many of those keeping quiet were afraid of the officials, the laws and speaking out.. ...I would hope it's true in Israel "as a rule" as I said before...who is going to step in Israel? Right the wrongs?
There was a difference in the US situation, The laws and law enforcement were enacted and enforced by states...... until the federal government finally moved in.... Israel has laws of discrimination, separate courts (talk about black and white water fountains). They have no Federal system to step in....they are the "federal system"
It's time for a wake up call...perhaps the world has to step in.
Mr Witty, way too often you sound like "the pot calling the kettle black!"
Can I take you on a tour of Israel, the West Bank and Gaza??? Show you some videos?
Witty, Witty, Witty
About not seeing Israelis taunting at "minorities"..... running Palestinians out of their houses, moving into their homes once you've forced them out; attaching them when they try to farm their land; spitting on Palestinian women, harassing internationals are just a few things "seen" What do you think these examples are? Israeli's embracing the minorities ?
Israeli's are committing racial murders...there are Israeli terrorists .... in masses and organized (they've been given organizational names... the IDF and Border Patrol....in fact they even wear uniforms! and damned if they don't have the law on their side ....always the military court of law...almost always the Israeli courts and laws.
Sounds a good bit like the south I heard about and knew as a child.
Witty where do you live???
Phil, Don't you have expertise in interviewing? Seems to me you've identified the major points for an interesting article. Maybe you're the "someone" you called for!
"Anyone that identifies with a community identifies those that are “others”. Its not that significant. "
Significant it is! You need to open your eyes to the present and study history.
There may always be "others" What is significant is Zionists and many Jews are a community that is hell bent on destroying the "others" and making their lives intolerable.
"....Jews that do work for good in the world everywhere they are able, are harrassed for associating as Jews in Israel."
Perhaps it's time for the Jews you've described, yourself included, to take an honest look at your larger Jewish community and what is being done to Palestinians. The Palestinians are a part of the world you seem to have overlooked doing good for.
Thanks Polly,
"The neo-cons and all of their minions should be the ones getting hounded day and night on this site. " Yes they should be hounded.
But Israel's illegal and immoral treatment of the Palestinians needs to be listed, written and talked about....
The American public has NO idea what's happening. It's been my experience that when they do find out...visuals are very helpful...they are appalled and can't understand why the MSM doesn't make this know. If they don't become enlightened, most begin to question Israel and the US involvement.
The public has to become aware and involved before most of our elected officials will act. AIPAC has them afraid to speak up. Sad but true.
Joe,
thank you for sharing your visit to Gaza.I look forward to hearing about your time in Palestine and Israel.
As someone who visited Palestine in May, my trip was much like yours in many ways. We were fortunate to have time with people....I sorry you missed that opportunity. Palestinians are the most hospitable people I've ever met. They are good people! They consistently asked "Why to people hate us" and "please, tell the people of the world we are not bad people. WE want to live in peace.
You mentioned what you could do about the situation...well you've written this article, which is great and needed. Just remember when communicating with groups such as this you are, for the most part, preaching to the converted.
Talk, talk, talk as the aid to my Congressman told me. Don't fall into the easy trap of speaking to the converted...pick groups and people who are interested but don't necessarily have their minds made up....they are the most important. Show your pictures; let them speak for themselves. Most people are horrified to see what Israel has done to Gaza. Tell the facts of the siege...people needing medical care are denmied visas, college students loose graduate school scholarships because they are denied visas, the people of Gaza are trapped...they cannot leave, nor can they return, talk about the restrictions on imports...shortages, lack of water. the tunnels supplying Gaza's needs for ever day survival...and very few rockets. The average person has no idea these circumstances exist. You've been there, you saw for yourself...you're not speaking from hearsay....They will listen! Don't waste your time with Zionists, they will not hear you; don't want to hear you.
For me, it's difficult NOT to talk about Gaza, which doesn't bother me. I do try to watch myself in social situations that I don't "enlighten" the same person twice.
You have been fortunate to have an experience unlike any other; a traumatic yet beautiful, exciting experience that MUST be shared if Gaza is to be free. Sharing your experience is as important, maybe more important, than the trip itself. Good luck to you!
Once again Israel is showing itself for what it is ....monstrous!!
Alerting and pressuring the press is one way to go.
Mine is to send this to my Congressman...the one who said he didn't know the WHO estimates that only 15% of Palestinians documented as needing medical treatment outside Gaza are allowed visas...and treatment!
So, send it to your Congressman and Senators. There is no way they or Israel can defend Israel's action of denying medical treatment!!! This happens ever day with individuals needing medical treatment.
If it's possible to obtain an example of outrageous denial of treatment each week, that "weekly update" could be forwarded to members of Congress and the press.
It is a perfect example of Israel's inexcusable treatment of Palestinians in Gaza..
ISM has videos of the fishermen being attacked by the Israeli Navy. Don't have ISM link but they can be accessed through Phil's blogroll: May 2009 Gaza delegation site.
There are also videos of farmers under attack.
Thanks to ISM for taking on such an important role!
I am happy to see this post (sad it has to exist) What happens on a daily basis in Gaza is deplorable! It's important the video accounts exist, providing documentation. Viewing them needs to be encouraged.
no problem Aref...Don't believe in saviors but did have hopes Obama was different...he is certainly "different" from what I'd hoped for.
I was furious with my grandson because he didn't vote...I have always voted...now I'm wondering if it's worth it. I guess if Palin runs for President I can always write in myself.
Wish I didn't know about the man calling in support of Obama! How sad....and infuriating that his hopes have been ignored...Palestinians are amazingly hopeful people but are being pushed to the edge.
Aref...have been smelling and drinking the coffee...I'm not asleep or in la,la land but I do get stuck in the twilight zone from time to time.
Wish I didn't know about that! How sad....and infuriating
Aref...have been smelling and drinking the coffee...I'm not asleep or in la,la land but I do get stuck in the twilight zone from time to time.
Did I hear that right...all the people with the convoy will be allowed into Gaza? The sticking point in negotiations was mainly about American vehicles Egypt won't allow into Gaza? And the US must be asking for that denial, right?
It is ridiculous...Those vehicles can't be of real importance to the US...we must be bowing to Israel's request; only to once again look foolish before the rest of the world.
Has Obama or the white house made a comment or acknowledge what's been happening for the past 10 days.
US continues to look stupid...and without George W Bush at the helm.
Philip, you need not worry about stating things clearly; your writing was as clear, concise, personal and excellent as usual. I have spent the day reading press releases, interviews, blogs.....getting confused and anxious....kept returning to mondoweiss hoping to hear your accounting of what's transpired. Thank you! I'm there in spirit!
Witty...you are pathetic! Worse than an old, worn out and broken record; playing a song that was always off key and written for a very limited, shrinking audience!
Your understanding of the situation in Gaza is limited...by your own design. A siege, is a siege, is a siege....it's not isolation. Perhaps you're experiencing isolation, you certainly sound that way!
Mr Witty "I don’t see that continued shelling of Palestinian civilians is in anyone's best interest, or that Israel's daily military action is either." The continued teargassing, firing on, murdering and injuring Palestinians, internationals and Israelis during non-violent demonstrations.....is that in the best interest of the of Israeli constituents...How about house demolitions, removal of Palestinians from their homes, kidnapping Palestinians in the night, killing Palestinians, diverting their water supplies, ruining their farm land, enforcing a siege, blockade and collective punishment... the list goes on...
"The only strategy that I can see results in improvement in Gazans’ lives is moderation." You have to be kidding!
In comparison Israel's crimes meet with little response....the Palestinians have little to respond with. May I reminded you, they have no Army, no Air force, no Navy (they can't even fish without Israel shooting at them), no 3.5 billion in US aid.
Consider the humanitarian crisis Palestinians are suffering.....they have not created that...it's been crafted by Israel, the US and Egypt.
"Crime doesn’t result in good." May you, Mr Witty, your Israel, the US, Egypt realize that sooner rather than later.
"The pressures that Phil describes apply in every profession (not about Israel, but every one has pet mazes). They will not abate."
Oh come on...wake up to reality....The press "prides itself" on reporting without bias. You're "frustrated" about issues Mr Witty...take action, get involved...offer to pay for insulating a home in need...can't afford that...raise the money from your friends,,,no, friends...relentlessly visit authorities until they do it! Your energies are mis-directed; moaning relentlessly on mondoweiss every day. And we, myself included should ignore you!
Read Phil's post in the wee hours of the morning...thanks! I applaud you for taking on your own profession. Continue pointing out the "Times" bias!
Just read an "opinion" piece in the "Independent Press" After attending a talk by Anna Baltzer, the writer complains it was one sided, should have been more balanced. Naturally it was "also full of lies".
I give presentations about Gaza. After one, I was told my presentation was very good but would have been better if I had "included the other side...made it more balanced" I replied the talk was about Gaza... what I'd seen, heard and experienced...The "other side" is presented daily in the press, on TV, on the radio and in a favorable light. Gaza's "side" is omitted. "When I give my presentation I feel no responsibility to present "the other side" He responded with surprise, "Oh, I never thought about that."
The "aid" comes into Gaza via Kerem Shalom border crossing, which has limited capacity to transfer goods. Fuels and gas have been transferred through the Nahal Oz crossing and recently Israel has been directing the transfer through Kerem Shalom. Kerem Shalom is located in Gaza's south east corner.
Sorry about that..it should be Democratic Israel. I guess my fingers have difficulty writing that, similar to the difficultly my brain has accepting Israel's claims. And I don't think I hit submit,
Shouldn't Palestinians HAVE a guarantee of equality? Justice, rights, opportunities, freedoms for Palestinians should equal those enjoyed by Jews in Israel; Israel is a democracy.
FuzzyDetective, Welcome, you've come to the rught place for information and discussion (usually), Phil's posted about his Gaza trip. You can read about it...at the top right of the page, next to subscribe, there's a box saying: To search, type and hit enter.
You'll be up to speed in no time.
Witty: "I DESIRE a humane movement for “justice” for Palestinians that I can feel good about supporting". Who really cares about your desires and whether you feel good about an issue or support it? Your ego is showing!
Could you possibly explore the idea of Palestinians desire? Considering Israel, semoctatic Israel as they like to describe themselves, shou;dm't {a;estiniansIn relationship treceiving equal justice, rights, opportunities, freedoms...it's too long a list. Education is a wonderful thing!
No surprise when it comes to Motorola.....But this is a Verizon ad, isn't it? I don't have a TV so I'm a bit out of touch with ads.
If it is a Verizon ad I can and will discontinue verizon as my cell phone and internet provider; pay the penalty fee for breaking my contract. Verizon won't care...but I do! I have to live with myself.
Agree with you potsherd....Bombs have no purpose other than destruction...and killing...and selling phones. Now they're extra cool; wasn't it funny how thepeople were terrified, almost scared to death? We laughed so hard when the spooked horse ran for its life...all to bring us a new phone we don't need , can't afford but will purchase anyway. Hey, it's good being desensitized to war too.
Then there's the mandated silence about Israel's illegal and imoral actions...they're evil....yet they aren't to be criticised....they're our best friend....even when they thumb their nose at our president....do what ever they please....With friends like Israel, who needs enemies?
Israel consistently bites the hand that feeds them....and the hand consistently continues financing and supporting them!! How stupid is that?
May I ask about Jews protecting themselves? I believe it's Israel supposedly "protecting " itself which they are doing with US money, my tax dollars. They seem to trust and rely on US aid and the US rubber stamp of support.
Unfortunately, I believe they do trust the US...
Right you are Mr Weiss! Being There (in Iran, Palestine or Gaza)...Going There (to Iran, Palestine or Gaza) is an eyeopening experience. These visits are the keys to unlocking the doors to peace. Going to Israel? If you're on a Birthright trip, one sponsored by AIPAC or other such journeys...forget it! The keys to peace won't even exist!
Can't make the trip to Palestine or Israel? Try contact with those who have: listening to their presentations, especially those that are personal accounts, rather than those filled with statistics; viewing their photos; reading their articles, blogs, books; watching their films and videos. It's difficult, if not impossible, for your "view" of I/P not to move towards the Palestinians. Education does wonders...it beats propaganda, which stands on feet of clay.
Zionists might be immune to absorbing what they see and hear, rejecting the educational experience. But who knows, even Witty might benefit from getting off his high horse and making a trip to Gaza or the West Bank.
And Mr. Witty, should you go to the west bank...no using settler roads, whizzing through check points with yellow license plates, using lines designated for privileged Israelis, Americans and others...experience it as Palestinians must. Day after day after day! I believe even you would find the experience humiliating. That's what its designed to be!
Who knows, I might even go along with you to witness the transformation.
Hopefully there will be a new traveling exhibit of children's art from Gaza in the spring . There are others out there currently but I'm not sure where.
If you want to view the drawings of what they witnesses during Israel's bombardment and invasion, google: Palestine seeing for myself and go to "Qarran Center: children paint to heal wounds. It shows a small sampling of drawings from their art therapy program.
Witnessing war is traumatic....especially for children. They carry the trauma, in varying degrees, throughout their lives.
v... thank you! The video is compelling.....it's from 2007! It's now 2009 Gaza has experienced 22 days of bombardment and invasion; the closure of their borders through siege and boycott.
In May 2009 I witnessed conditions in Gaza. I can't begin to adequately describe the conditions. How anyone maintains the will to live in Gaza is amazing.....and that's exactly the condition Israel has intentionally created.
NOT SO FUNNY!
yonira,
#1 the tunnels in Gaza are used for "importing" food, medicine, clothing, household goods, business and school supplies, books, you name it!....tunnels are the only source for just about everything the people of Gaza NEED to survive....and yes, at times weapons and those infamous rockets come through ...that's a minor function of the tunnels.
Where were you when they did bring in animals for the zoo???
Children in Gaza play in rubble, suffer from depression and trauma, attend schools with out supplies, are malnourished, live in tents, the list of hardships is never ending.
Careful yonira, you seem to be making an ass of yourself over 2 donkeys masquerading as zebras; bringing a bit of fun to children who can use smiles and laughter.
There would be screaming and ranting if Muslims were singing any national anthem other than that of the US; let alone as part of a religious service. If praying for a foreign nation was part of their cannon.....god help them. It would be referred to as treason?
How can people in the US be so passive when it comes to Israel? I know fear of the "anti-Semitism" label.
The Rabbis are calling for letters condemning the report be written to elected officials .... perhaps, now is the time for all good people to write letters to their elected officials in support of the Goldstone report and the UN; reminding them they are elected to represent us, citizens of the US...NOT Israel.
Rocks are not in the same category as rubber bullets, live ammunition and tear gas.
Years ago I participated in non-violent demonstrations and direct actions in the West Bank. It was a shock when the first peaceful demonstration was met with IDF tear gas, rubber bullets, sound bombs and eventually, live bullets. I watched an Israeli news photographer being beaten to the ground by soldiers; his cameras confiscated. My first instinct was to help him. I didn't. Was his camera considered a weapon? We ran for cover, remaining "trapped" for about two hours as the Israeli soldiers continued their violent action.
As a naive American motherand grandmother, I believed Palestinian grandmothers and mothers should stop their children from throwing those rocks. After all, the rocks hit tanks, jeeps, maybe even soldiers in riot gear; causing soldiers to "defend" themselves with tear gas and bullets. At times rock-thrower's were injured, even killed by the bullets; but the soldiers were provoked into action, what else could they do?
Watching our non-violent action be met with violence, even live bullets shocked and then angered me. I watched as young Palestinian men, teenagers really, brought tiers quickly setting them on fire. The rock throwing began.
My motherly reaction? I wanted to hurl rocks as hard and far as I could in the direction of the IDF. Not in violence to injure but in defiance of Israel's military; to protest of the injustice and to show I would not be bullied or have my self respect taken away. Even it it meant being shot!
Loved Slater's letter to Dr. Carmi!
She may have attributed "treason" to others. However she can take credit for starting her letter stating there was a "grave matter;" referred to the article's "extremist line" and how "deeply disgusted" she was by it, as well as in "fear."
So much for academic freedom. Her concern is for money, especially American money, not academics.
Does everything is Israel depend on America money? Sounds like BDS is the way to go! But that's another story.
Witty, how in the world can you connect "Phil" to almost everything you disagree with? Carmi was, as President of the University, writing an official letter to her staff. Official letters from university presidents should meet specific standards ... The last time I looked, Phil wasn't a university president! You don't even compare apples to oranges. With you, it's more like apples to bagels.
