      I think you have touched on a very important point. A group that divides the world into Jews and Non-Jews is inherently racist. A group with a religious belief that a Messiah will rule the world from Jerusalem as is believed by Orthodox Judaism, a group that separates itself creates laws that do not permit intermingling will lead to resentment and ultimately anti-semitism.
      It has to be recognized, if there is, as one person commented, an elevation of tribal continuity that supersedes all other considerations then one has ask, if we want to get rid of anti-semitism then it is time for these exclusionary ideas to be rejected.

      I read Dana's article, it was very understandable in a cultural/historical way, if you are Irish English, French, German, Russian, etc you can visit the place your Great Grand-parent lived. In fact you can probably trace their roots back hundreds of years. Mohammed Ali was able to visit the place his Irish Great Grandfather lived in Clare Ireland before moving to Kentucky. For most Israelis that is not possible, tracing back their roots would bring them back to Russia, somewhere in the Middle East, Morocco, Baghdad, Tehran.
      To expect someone to feel a connection about a place last occupied nearly 2000 years ago would be like expecting the British to get nostalgic about their Druid ancestors. There have always been Jews in Palestine/ Israel, but they were small in number relative to the immigration in the 20th Century.
      That is one of Zionism's fatal flaws it lacks cultural/historical continuity, it is a construct that ultimately will collapse because its foundations are shaky and shallow

      Look contrary to what the ADL says, the media is controlled mostly by Jewish concerns, if not directly, then they have positions of editorial power, similarly, there is enormous Jewish clout in the legal and finance professions. They get this clout because Jews mostly hire Jews, whether they are competent or not, and help them build a resume that gets them key jobs, in government agencies it means contracts for Jewish owned companies. They operate like a country within a country.
      Until we address this special interest treatment nothing is going to change. It accounts for how General Franks could appraise Douglas Feith " the stupidest f---ing man in Washington"

      Noonan is correct that the Church consistently condemned usury in the most official way. For example, Canon 13 of the Second Lateran Council (1139) says: "Furthermore we condemn that practice accounted despicable and blame worthy by divine and human laws, denounced by Scripture in the Old and New Testaments, namely, the ferocious greed of usurers; and we sever them from every comfort of the Church, forbidding any archbishop or bishop, or an abbot of any order whatever or anyone in clerical orders, to dare to receive usurers, unless they do so with extreme caution; but let them be held infamous throughout their whole lives and, unless they repent, be deprived of a Christian burial."

      Similarly, Canon 25 of the Third Lateran Council (1179) says, "Nearly everywhere the crime of usury has become so firmly rooted that many, omitting other business, practice usury as if it were permitted and in no way observe how it is forbidden in both the Old and New Testament. We therefore declare that notorious usurers should not be admitted to communion of the altar or receive Christian burial if they die in this sin."

      And Canon 29 of the Council of Vienne (1311) says, "If indeed someone has fallen into the error of presuming to affirm pertinaciously that the practice of usury is not sinful, we decree that he is to be punished as a heretic."
      These injunctions were approved by many popes, including Alexander III, Gregory IX, Urban III, Innocent III, and Clement V The teaching of the Church condemning usury is unambiguous, binding, and irrevocable.

      The Jewish skill in finance was honed over centuries because both Christians and Muslims forbade usury (defined as making ANY interest on money loaned). Yes there were Christians who ignored it, but as official policy usury was banned. It was only allowed because the Church had to function in the capitalist system and they would never be able to get a loan to do anything. A argument for the greater good.

      This is what sites like this and papers overseas have done with the help of the Internet. When one reads The Guardian, The Independent out of England or even the English version of Haaritz one get a more balanced view. The long years of Darkness At Noon which have shadowed well read Americans is coming to end. So are realities such as the Russians supply Europe with gas, they have no love for Israel especially after the Oligarchs who tried to hijack their country, many who hold Israeli passports or are holed up in London. Further this country needs to borrow money and get cooperation from European banks. Germany has a huge Turkish population, France a large Muslim population, England some very affluent and influential Pakistani, Arabs etc
      As Europe increasingly tilts towards Russia its interests will align more with their views. The US is in Nation building wars in Iraq and Afghanistan it needs cooperation of Muslim countries. Its not that other Arab countries have a great love for the Palestinians, it is that they see in the Palestinians a destiny Israel and the US has for them. What if China allows Iran becomes a trade partner in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (the Far East Equivalent of the EU), what if it makes a deal to modernize its oil infrastructure. What if Saudi Arabia, Iraq or Kuwait decide the dollar is too unstable and they trade directly with China. At some point Israel has to realize they are just another country, who has to play by the rules. Or they will be shut out of the game. Right now they are drunk with their power, and drunks eventually stumble

      No, the Inquisition was brought into Spain because of Jewish zealots. Isabella of Castile was for her age a very enlightned ruler, she was also very unprejudiced, her chief financial officer, doctor and other ministers were Jews. These leading Jews decided to convert to Christianity, which offended what I call Jewish Zealots, who went to the Inquistion to say that they only pretended to convert.. and worse set up some phony cases. It was important to Spain, because the provinces Aragon, Castile etc all spoke a DIFFERENT language (and still do to this day). Religion was the only glue to hold them together, these zealots caused such paranoia, there were riots in Spain. This is very much like the 50s here with the McCarthy Red scare. So the crown came decided to ask the Jews to convert or leave and made pork the National Dish. Henry Kamen is the best expert on this stuff, his books are in most libraries.
      So the Inquisition in Spain was initially about making sure conversos were not fifth columnists for the recently ejected Muslims. Muslims rarely convert to Christianity. They are thrown out of their families if they do, and can be executed. The Muslims took in the Jews, a lot went to Baghdad and others to Morocco and Constantinople. These Jews form the Sephardic communities that still live in countries like Morocco.

      This is a very engaging debate, I would like to point out something, MLK was a Southern Baptist who took a literalist approach to the Bible. As such he would have believed that God granted the Land of Israel to the Jews. Also if you go back to the discussion on Protestanism and the Jews, it has been a goal of Protestants esp Baptists and other fundamentalists to support the Jewish return to Israel.
      So as a humanist who fought for civil rights he would have opposed the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, as a Baptist he would be inclined to see it in Biblical terms

      I think a good deal of the nasty nationalistic God smoting stuff could be taken out of the Old Testament (Torah).
      Your comment about competing religions is true, what led to Christianity thriving was that they took care of hungry, old and sick. When disease broke out in the cities they cared for the sick. Later Roman Emperors tried to copy it but it couldn't. Religion has to be practical to survive

      the Jews will end up (again) paying the price for this. Right now Iraqi Christians, known as Chaldeans Catholics are being persecuted in Iraq because of a war instigated by Christian Zionists, Zionists and supported by various Protestant sects. The community in Baghdad is the oldest Christian community in the world, they say a version of the old Tridentine Mass (Latin Mass) almost word for word in Arameic. The language spoken by Jews in Israel in the first century. They literally are the closest link to the earliest Christian communities, living there for 2000years. Is it no wonder the Pope refused to meet with Condi Rice, gave George Bush a verbal shellacking that left him lost for words, and the reintroduction of the Tridentine Mass into the Catholic Liturgy, is not an attempt to upset Jews but a statement of solidarity with the Chaldeans. There is a lot of anger around the world at Protestant fundamentalists, in the Coptic communities in Egypt, in the Greek Orthodox and others. The blowhard blowdrys do not have Jewish interests at heart but they are hanging on to the last thread of credibility as a spiritual and religious tradition.

      No Man is island, the concept of Man outside of the context of others in society is a meaningless concept, we are social beings.
      The US in an attempt to reduce tribal and religious differences has created the stage for neo-feudalism. The Magna Carta was a document that put the King, the richest most powerful man in the country under the law, we are in the processes of disassembling it.
      Our elites are above the law.
      All this is a product of the Reformation thinkers, when you move from Luther to Calvin one goes to a situation in Geneva very similar to the one happening with Homeland Security where people who did not strictly follow or expressed contrary viewpoints were punished. In England the Civil War between Royalists and Roundheads, the latter very much fundamentalists, won and caused such disruption to communities with its strict rules on speech, dancing, dress that when Cromwell died, they invited a pro Catholic party loving monarch back, Charles the second.
      Rigidity, and a harsh view of man as sinful in the eyes of God, rewarded materially for following the Law, poverty and sickness a punishment for being dissolute and bad, not following God's law.... is that not the view of the Old Testament, the story of Job, this was the view of Calvin

      Tragically that is true, especially in the 18th and 19th Century when rationalism and reductionism was the rage, is it any surprise that Hegel in his writings on the State regarded the State as a semi-divine entity and people as nothing. That spurned two totalitarian philosophies that cost millions of lives in the 20th Century.

      It has also led to the dissolution of communities, old mainline Christianity was based on the parish, the community. Protestantism puts man before God alone, no priest no intermediate. It has resulted when translated into political terms a radical individualism that is self seeking. Look what Obama had to trade to get a few measly dollars to put food on the table of the unemployed.

      Last note on Edith Stein the very brilliant German Jewish philosopher and pupil to Edmund Husserl, credited by many as one of the first feminist writers. One day she and a friend visited a Carmelite monastery, Edith went along out of interest, she came from a devout Jewish family. While her friend was touring the monastery and visiting friends, Edith went to the library and picked up a book by a Spanish mystic Carmelite nun Teresa of Avila.
      On reading her work about the four stages of mental prayer she decided to become a Catholic nun, eventually died in a concentration camp never disavowing her Jewish roots but finding some sort of synchronicity through the mystical writings of Teresa and another mystic John of The Cross.

      The point is one of the most brilliant minds of the 20th Century would not have reached that position reading Protestant texts, the works of a 16th Century mystic unrelated to the Bible were the connecting tissue. The solution to the issues in the Middle East do not lie in the Bible but in the writings and thought of post biblical people of good will. That is why the issues of the Reformation until they are resolved will never allow for peace in the ME

      Just a little theology to help explain some things, if you are Catholic, Anglican etc Christianity is based on three things, the Bible, Tradition and the Magisterium of the Church (theologians, philosophers etc), thats why they have Councils such as Vatican 2.
      It is also why if you read an encylical the footnotes reference other council documents more often than not or the Gospels.
      For Protestant sects the only source of teaching is the Bible. It is the inerrant word of God. This is why the last Pope accepted Evolution as a theory and the Protestants hang on to creationism. There are many sects of Protestantism but Baptists and the like hold onto creationism and a fundamentalist reading of the Bible. In recent years their focus has moved to a more apocalytic view, they see the Jews converting because we are in the end of days. The Jews need to be in Israel so Jesus can come again as written about in Revelation, this was the premise for that best selling series of books Left Behind.
      There is one more aspect that has relavance to today. If you read the New Testament it is pretty clear that there is a rejection of violence. But even in the history of mainstream Christianity when theologians needed to deal with war, they went to the Old Testament, the figure they chose was David. War now for most longtime Christian sects is considered immoral, but for Christian Zionist steeped in the deeds of David, Judith and others war is righteous, so blowing away a few hundred thousand Iraqis is OK, as the Bible has umpteen examples of Hitittes, Midianites etc being smoted by God as evil doers, it has also leads to the current Islamophobia fueled by some hard line Zionist interests. In Oren's book there is the story about why LBJ gave the Israelis nuclear weapons, LBJ's grandmother always instructed him "to look out of the Jews".

      Luther believed that the reason that Jews had rejected Jesus was because of errors introduced early on, most noticeable Luther insisted on the belief found in Paul's epistle that salvation was possible by faith alone. The belief of Eastern, Catholic etc is that by doing good works one can earn grace..brownie points for salvation. This Luther rejected thats why you see stickers on cars saying Jesus Saves. One of the reasons Luther became vehmently anti-semitic and encouraged pogroms against the Jews later in his region of Germany was that when he said OK guys now we've got it right convert, the Jews rejected his thesis.
      It is also why the Catholic Church refuses to recinded his excommunication, because they believe he knew he had failed and rather than ask for repentance he did unrepentant. In the gospels the one sin that is marked out against all others is to speak against the Holy Spirit, "Woe to that man". So having in the Catholic view done that and not repented he was on the fast track to hell, though recent thought has allowed the infinity mercy of God could still save him, that is how we have ecumenism.
      Going back to my post, there are two aspects of the part about Darwin that need to be mentioned the first is that in the 19th Century Protestant Christians, largely due to a book called Natural Theology by William Paley believed that the Old Testament, the Torah had been "proved" he used a metaphor about a watchmaker. When it was disproved by Darwin, many moral honest people simply said well in that case I will become an atheist. Evangelic Christianity was a catalyst for atheism and secularism. It also created a space in mainstream culture where Jews could become secular, and thus philosophies like Marxism develop. A measure of how desperate a bases for "I will be with you always" was is that when Mormonism appeared in the late 19th Century they created a new book the Book of Mormon, this completely side stepped the issue. Clearly they saw the writing on the wall.
      There is a separate aspect that connects Protestantism and Jews.
      The Reformation only succeeded because the Northern German Princes at first backed it to put pressure on the Holy Roman Emperor. The Emperor had been traditionally German, but it was now held by Phillip of Spain, and the Germans were shut out. When the Catholic Church did nothing for years, the Princes confiscated Church land, which they in turn they used to raise money. The Reformation was a boon to these princes financial and ultinmately to the merchantile classes, it was in a sense a catalyst for Capitalism. This was especially true of monastery lands, not controlled by local bishops but directly from Rome through religious orders. These lands had traditionally been the bread baskets of towns, in England when Henery V111 declared himself Head of The Catholic Church in England, (not a Protestant note), he confiscated all the monatery lands. This led to the Northern Revolt which he viciously crushed, the Revolt was by poor people because monasteries were the social net of the 16th Centuries. Bottom line was that the Reformation helped to fund the future Capitalist trading eras of the 17th, 18th and 19th century. Up until the 16th Century usury was banned by papal decree, this did not apply to Jews. Hence the Merchant of Venice, Shylock and the pound of flesh. Being very good businessmen the Jews benefited from the Reformation because they could now exercise their financial skills. So there are many subtexts to the whole question of Jews and Protestants.

      Antidote very insightful comment, I read Oren's book what jumped out at me was the role played by Evangelic Protestants, from trying to convert Jews, to opening schools to rich industrialists funding a return to Israel. Essentially for me the whole Zionism/Israel issue is a Protestant Reformation issue. So yes it goes back a very long way to the 16th Century. Please bear with me while I explain. The very last words of the most important of the 4 Gospels, Matthew's is "Jesus said I will be with you until end the of time (or the age)". This has an important implication for the Reformation (1517), where was Jesus 's Spirit understood as the Holy Spirit for 1500 years. A Catholic could ask, where were the Protestants at the Council of Nicea, Ephesus, Chalcedon. Further if you were an Eastern Orthodox, an Anglican, Episcopalian, a Coptic, Syriac, Armenian, Nestorian, Russian, Ukranian, Catholic etc it is possible to trace back your Christian denomination to Pentacost to the founding of Christianity. Protestant sects cannot do this, there have no Archbishop of Canterbury, they have no relationship to the Catholic bishop St Augustine, nor to St Thomas who started the Armenian Church. Secondly, as you point out Darwin was a big problem for Protestants, not just because it showed that science told a different story to the Bible but because not only had Protestants had cut their ties with the teachings of Councils and philosophers of 1500 years. Think of Christianity as growing from an acorn to a tree, Protestantism in this light would be seen as a fallen branch looking for its acorn. So what was a Protestant to do? They connected to the one continuity they could, the Jews, understood as those who followed Judaism. The point I am making is that many Protestant sects would wither and die like that branch without Israel.
      Ultimately Israel is not a Jewish issue but a Protestant Christianity issue. Oren's book maybe a bit of propaganda in parts, but it does do one big service it documents very clearly how obsessed Protestants were to create Israel so their beliefs had some grounding.
      Sorry for boring those of the non Christian persuasion with this explanation.

      This is a very illuminating debate, reference is made to history, recent and going back into the sands of time. May I make a couple of points
      1) Israel Finkelstein, the well known archeologist states in his book "Unearthing The Bible", that he believes the Hebrews were originally Canaanites who went to Egypt looking for work, similar to migrant Mexicans today. Cannot Jews and Palestinian reach way back into history and state we were once one people.

      2) A number of years ago when the War in Balkans was at its fiercest, my brother made a remark I have never forgot, he said, one of the reasons to study "The Classics" (Ancient Greek and Roman Literature), is that one can see from start to finish how a political situation played out. he added that had politicians read Thucydides "Peloponnesian War" they would have been able to predict what would happen in Yugoslavia (in the 1990s).
      My thought is do any modern Israelis or Jews bother reading about the Crusades, one reason the First Crusade after its initial success collapsed was that the Crusaders never reproduced at the same rate as the natives, and when the population boom in Europe became a bust due to disease, there were not enough Crusaders to replace the ones who died. It should be noted the Crusaders made a point of trying to integrate with local populations, adopting their dress habits etc
      Maybe the line to take with those that refuse to abandon the Zionist idea for a more inclusive Jewish/Palestinian democratic model is to say, the Crusaders couldn't cut it why do you think you can, its been tried before and failed.

      The reason AIPAC is a powerful lobby is money 40-50% of money for Democrats come from Jewish organizations and a small 20% to Republicans.
      If AIPAC wasn't as powerful as suggested why was the Goldstone Report rejected by over 300 members of Congress. What possible capitalist interest was there in essentially a human rights issue. Israel has a mission in the ME, one not set by the US but by themselves. That is to be hegemonic power in the region. If the US was calling the shots there would be no settlement building in the West Bank. Recently, Alan Hart veteran ME Journalist with the BBC and long time friend and confidante to many Israeli leaders came to this conclusion as to why Israel gets its way.

      I found myself wondering why really it is that American presidents will not use the leverage they have to try to call the Zionist state to account for its crimes when doing so would clearly be in America’s own best interests.

      I’m beginning to think that the awesome influence of the Zionist lobby and its stooges in Congress is not the complete answer. And the question I am asking myself is this: Could it be that all American presidents know there is nothing nuclear-armed Israeli leaders would not do if they were seriously pressed to make peace on terms which they believed in their own deluded minds would put Israel’s security at risk? Always in my own mind is what Prime Minister Golda Meir said to me in a BBC Panorama interview and from which I quote in my book – in a doomsday situation Israel “would be prepared to take the region and the whole world down with it.”

      If it is the case that American presidents are frightened of provoking Israel, the conclusion would have to be that the Zionist state is a monster beyond control and that all efforts for peace are doomed to failure.

      You have touched the core of the problem here. Consider Phil's statement about how Marty Peretz gave him work when his writing wasn't good. Now step back and become the person who did not get those assignments, multiply that by tens of thousands of incidences. Personally, I could write half dozen such occurrences, and he left me feeling for those involved angry at the injustice.
      What disturbs non-Jews is that when given positions of power this continues. When applying for a grant, is the grant officer Jewish, will he/she give your grant request consideration or to a Jewish friend in need, and then give them the grant. When hiring someone Jewish for a job, are the lists of previous jobs that sound so impressive, the result of some favor, were they just figureheads who then hired people who really knew what to do.
      This is summed up in the remark General Franks made about Doug Feith.
      he described him as "the stupidest fu**ing man in Washington". I personally have no doubt Feith had no business being in the NSA, and I have a good idea how he got there.
      Then you wonder about backlash. Thats why peters comment is so insightful.
      It is really a self fulling prophecy.

For the current regime it is death by a thousand pinpricks. There should be a one state solution and the new state should be called either Canaan or Abraham. Both Jews and Palestinians are Canaanites (according to Israel Finkelstein and others). Maybe we can change the name of Iraq to Mesopotamia.

      One can criticize Israel for creating the problem, but shouldn't the Arab, Egyptian, Lebanese etc on purely humanitarian grounds seek to make the refugees lives easier. When refugees end up in Sweden, Britain or Germany they are given social services, found a place to live. The Saudi's could easily pay for something like this. Underlying this is an autocratic mentality, the belief that those in power are only responsible for their kin, tribe etc.
      Don't want to get into religion but the Christian responsibility to feed the hungry, clothe the naked etc... has created a Western mentality where even if you are an atheists there is a cultural belief that one should help the less fortunate.       Phil I appreciate your honesty, let me as a "bland" goyim, married in a Jewish family, worked for Jewish run businesses all my life. First Jews physically, by and large are unattractive, they lack the chiselled features of Nordic, the exotic sensuality of South Americans, or the grace of Asians, and the athleticism of Africans. In fact they are dour and ugly for the most part. Their humor is coarse, sarcastic and crude, it lacks wit and sophistication. Christian (Catholic and Eastern) religious services their churches speak to the imagination, and their services to a sacredness buried and hidden almost magical. The various Jewish services Bar Mitzvah, marriages etc, are dull affairs lacking imagination and ritual except for the crazy carrying around of the bride, that seem juvenile. Literature wise I haven't come across a Jewish writer in the same class as Waugh, Poe, Conrad. Jews are tribal and they overate themselves and their talents
      Overall Jews make good accountants, good doctors, scientists, music composers and conductors and thats about it, very dull, I'd say.

Were these secrets passed to India or any other country there would have been a sharply worded diplomatic missive. What has been the response to the Goldstone report has there been an call to have a trial held in the Hague, as was done in Bosnia, no. Why do we tolerate Settlement building when it runs against virtually every American Administration's policy why no punative response.
      As to the Financial crisis it was selling and packaging of these mortgage securities that has created the meltdown, the US being the major currency and largest economy has precipated all these collapses of other countries. After the crash of 1929 executives of the major banks were jailed, why has there been no such action taken, instead no-one knows where the TARP funds have gone. It is in drawing conclusions between who would criticised, such as Rubin, Greenspan and others involved in the repeal of Glass Steagal, that leads one from a perspective point of view to say, were these men not Jewish we would be having major hearings.
      Do you see how the first set of issues leads quite naturally to the second.
      My view is that were Israel to send those responsible for "Crimes Against Humanity" to the Hague their standing in the world would change for the better.

      Thank you both for addressing this issue, the problem is one cannot make any negative comments about Israel without being called Anti-Semitic. Whether you are President Carter, Desmond Tutu, Amnesty International or Norman Finkelstein.
      So immediately a criticism of Israel actions becomes a slander against Jews.
      Even the Financial crises brings this out, because there were many important players like Rubin, Grenspan, Weill who played a part in the collapse, the immediate reaction from the Financial Community was, its the not our fault, it was the fault of giving mortgages to lower income folks, just give us the money we can do no wrong and we have a right to ridiculous compensation and massive bonuses.
      Where else do you find this mentality, but when criticism is made of Israel.
      If the criticism was dealt with instead of slandering those brave enough to speak out, as would happen if it were any other country, there would not be this growing sense that rules just do not apply to Israel or to Jews in general.
      It leads to resentment.

      The general attitude that non-jews are beginning to take on Jews, is that Jews care only for other Jews, that they are exceptionalists with a superiority complex, a chip on their shoulder against non-jews combined with an uber victim complex;
      they are the people who have suffer most in history. Which is of course nonsense. What the gentile world wants is for them to get off the Jewish Supremacist pedestal and show some empathy with the rest of mankind. The second element that I am beginning to read quite a bit about in mainstream publications is that Israel is not a country but a criminal state.
