“Nobody ever invited me to tell the story in any other way but that we must live by the sword,” Yuli Novak says of her upbringing in the Israeli elite. In a new memoir excerpted by Haaretz in Hebrew this weekend Novak says that the moment she ceased to be obedient, “the system turned against me.” She came to the understanding that a South Africa style political struggle is necessary to bring peace and equality to Israel and Palestine.

Recent videos show routine racism and violence directed against Palestinians with Israeli government support. Jewish settlers threaten to unleash dogs on Palestinians. Others spew hatred as soldiers protect them: “This is my land, King David walked around here two thousand years ago, herding his sheep. When you were where — in Saudi Arabia? Where Muhammad roamed…. Muhammad killed people. Raped. You’re a rapist people.”

Haaretz covers Israeli army plans to convert “an ancient olive grove in the Galilee” into a shooting range with sympathy for the Israeli residents but no awareness that the once-thriving Palestinian village of A’mka there was uprooted by Zionists to make way for the Jewish-only settlement of A’moka. The Palestinians became refugees.
