The International Criminal Court’s decision on Friday confirming its jurisdiction over war crimes committed in the occupied Palestinian territory has made waves in Israel, Palestine, and abroad in recent days. In a video response released over the weekend, Benjamin Netanyahu called the Israeli crimes in questions “fake war crimes,” and accused the court of specifically targeting Israel.

Jeremy Corbyn’s appearance at the Tunis cemetery, remembering 72 killed by Israel in 1985 terrorist attack, was quite consistent with his decades-long condemnation of all bigotry and violence, and was one of his many unforgivable humanizations of Palestinians. He refused to adopt the mandatory fictions that Israel only kills civilians accidentally and only kills at all in self-defense

International Criminal Court Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda surely felt compelled to announce an investigation of Israel’s conduct in the occupation so as not to appear to be completely failing her job, but her referral of a “question” concerning the “territory” under jurisdiciton to a “Pre-trial Chamber” of the court risks dragging this process out by months, maybe even years.

While the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that the killing of an entire family in Gaza was a “mistake,” the New York Times allows the Israeli military to explain that “civilian casualties are unavoidable in Gaza’s teeming neighborhoods.” And, hammering home the propaganda point, the paper says Israel “takes numerous precautions to prevent unnecessary civilian casualties.”
