Large Scale Israeli Offensive On Gaza Likely
Israeli daily, Haaretz, reported that the office of Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is preparing the international public opinion for a large-scale military offensive against the Gaza Strip, adding that it seems that Netanyahu has already decided to conduct a large ground offensive against the coastal region.
Over the past 72 hours, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have escalated their aerial and ground attacks against the Gaza Strip. Five Palestinian civilians, including 3 children, have been killed, and 52 others, including 6 women and 12 children, have been wounded. Four of these deaths and 38 of the injuries resulted from an Israeli attack on a football playground in al-Shoja’iya neighborhood east of Gaza City. Additionally, 2 members of the Palestinian resistance were killed, and some civilian facilities were destroyed or damaged. According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 15:30 on Saturday, 10 November 2012, Israeli military vehicles stationed at the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel fired an artillery shell at a number of Palestinian children who were playing football at al-Mentar Hill east of al-Shoja’iya neighborhood, which is east of Gaza City and nearly 1,500 meters away from the border. As a result, 2 children were instantly killed: Mohammed Ussama Hassan Harara (16); and Ahmed Mustafa Khaled Harara (17). Following this attack, a number of Palestinian civilians, who were in the consolation house of the Harara family, rushed to the area, where the IOF immediately fired another 3 shells. As a result, 2 Palestinian civilians were instantly killed.

IOF launches arrest campaign in Shufat
Israeli occupation forces (IOF) launched a campaign of arrests in Shufat refugee camp and nearby suburbs in occupied Jerusalem on Sunday, local sources said.
On Wednesday 7th of November at 3 a.m. Israeli occupation forces raided the village of Beit Ommar. Approximately fifty soldiers arrived in five jeeps and one van to transport prisoners. Two youth of Beit Ommar were arrested; Mutazem Ibrahim Ikhlayl (20) and Mohammed Nasser Ikhlayl (19). Both of them have been arrested before. The prisoners were taken to the military base in Gush Etzion. In addition to these arrests, the soldiers went to the house of Emad Ahmed Khalil Abu Hashem (23). He lives together with his wife and two children. Emad was given an order to meet in Gush Eztion Monday 12th of November only ten days after he was released from an Israeli prison.

Children’s time in detention is extended despite their ill health
The Israeli Magistrates court have extended the detention of 17-year old Malek Mhesen until Monday so that they can continue investigations. The judge ruled that Ammar Adel Mhesen could be transferred to house arrest if bail money is paid. The prosecution have appealed against the ruling. Malek was presented to the judge in a closed, classified hearing. Neither his parents nor his lawyer was allowed into the court room. He was seen with bruises and other injuries to his face. Malek was arrested yesterday at Shoufat camp by the Israeli forces. He was arrested and beaten. He was received injuries to his head, mouth, nose and eyes. He was immediately transferred to hospital. Ammar was arrested whilst in Hadasa Ein Karem hospital. He was attacked and received injuries to his head, eye, ear and chest before fainting.

In Malaysia, a small group of community activists are busy at work developing projects that benefit most vulnerable members of Palestinian society in Gaza. Working under the umbrella of Viva Palestina Malaysia (VPM), the group shows solidarity through empowerment projects: interest free loans for micro projects, providing employment for women, supplying thousands of solar lamps aimed at ending the persistent darkness for many families, and more. The overall value of the combined efforts of VPM is important, because it is long-lasting. But equally important, the channeled funds are not part of a political scheme nor are aimed to exact concession. This can hardly be said of much of the relationship between Palestinian leadership and society, and outside funds, which began pouring in, with a clear political manual that has been dutifully followed by those who provide the funds and those who receive them.

With the US embroiled in Afghanistan’s endless theater, the debate around insurgencies has once more taken hold. In 2007, Jeffery Record’s Beating Goliath detailed the story of how some insurgencies end up defeating their much more powerful adversaries. Three years later, the RAND Corporation published Ben Connable and Martin Libicki’s How Insurgencies End, which showed that such struggles last for ten years, giving the stubborn Goliath the best odds if they are able to quell public opinion in their own country and break the support networks for their David. The US War College’s Thomas Mockaitis’ 2011 study Resolving Insurgencies found that most rebellions degenerate into criminal organizations or small terrorist networks, both unable to sustain the political goals that initiated them. All this is salutary reading for tone-deaf policy makers, who would like to see the Afghan story follow this script: let it become a drug infeudated oligarchy and lose popular support. It is simply not what has happened.
