When you type ‘apartheid’ on Google search, it supplies ‘Israel’

Google does not quite reflect the world; it is less of a “pure” search engine and more of a search engine according to popularity. As more people are looking for something, or linking to a particular site, the rating goes up.

So this photo, taken from “clean” Google account – that is one that it cannot identify as mine and is therefore not skewed by my previous search results – cannot be a reflection of reality; one cannot say whether Israel is indeed an Apartheid state (even though it is). But one can certainly conclude that the idea that Israel is an Apartheid state is a consensus, or at any rate close enough consensus for Google to recognise it as such.

All members of the Hasbara brigade, to your battle stations, now!

גוגל לא משקפת את העולם; היא פחות מנוע חיפוש “נקי” ויותר מנוע חיפוש על פי פופולריות. ככל שיותר אנשים מחפשים משהו, או מקשרים לאתר מסוים, כך הדירוג שלהם עולה.

אז התמונה הזו, שנלקחה מחשבון גוגל “נקי” – כלומר, לא כזה שמזוהה כשלי ועל כן מוטה על ידי תוצאות החיפוש הקודמות שלי – לא יכולה להיות שיקוף של המציאות; היא לא יכולה לומר אם ישראל היא אכן מדינת אפרטהייד (אף שהיא כזו). אבל היא בהחלט אומרת שהרעיון שישראל הוא מדינת אפרטהייד הוא קונסנסוס, או על כל פנים מספיק קרוב לקונסנסוס כדי שגוגל תכיר בו ככזה.
