We must target our politicians’ ‘cowardice’ in the face of war crimes –Trevor Hogan’s impassioned speech in Dublin

ActivismNews

An amazing speech on the Day of Rage Saturday August 9 in Dublin. Trevor Hogan is a former rugby forward in Ireland who participated in the Gaza flotilla and has assumed a prominent role in Palestinian solidarity in his country. Here he calls out the “cowardice” of the Irish government and the members of the Israel lobby in the face of Palestinian “annihilation,” and demands that the Israeli ambassador, the “chief liar, the chief warmonger in Ireland,” to be expelled from the country:

We cannot sit back and allow Israel to start its slaughter again…. We will not wait fort them to enforce on them a slow death with the illegal siege. We will not wait. We will not wait…

We will continue to stand against the occupation… we will stand against the annihilation of the Palestinian people. Because that’s what they’re trying to do, and we will not let them get away with it…

Gaza is devastated. There’s nowhere for people to go… So it can feel helpless. Even worse, it feels helpless when you look at the Irish government and the cowardice and inaction of our government, our representatives. In this, I’m looking squarely at a few select members of our government. TDs [members of parliament] and Ministers. Charlie Flanagan [minister for foreign affairs]. Leo Varadkar. Joanna Tuffy. I name them out because you are members of a group called the Oireachtas Friends of Israel.

First of all I’ve got a message to you. You need to change your name. You need to change it to the Oireachtas Friends of War Criminals. You need to change it to the Oireachtas Friends of Apartheid. Because that’s what you are. How can you hold your head up, in our [unintelligible], being associated with that?…

We need to call out and expose the lies of the Israeli embassy, the Israeli propaganda and the Zionist narrative that seems to be accepted at face value. We need to expose that, it’s a policy that kills first and lies about afterwards, they kill and then they lie.

And the chief liar, the chief warmonger in Ireland is the Israeli ambassador to my right, in there, that’s where he resides.

[crowd shouts: BOOOO Out! Out! Out! Out! Out!]

As you said we want him out, we want him out of our country. We do not want to tolerate war criminals; apologizers for war crimes; justifiers of practical genocide. He’s out of our country. But the problem is, since our government won’t do it, since they won’t enact it we’re gonna do it.

[crowd cheers]

We’re gonna put a siege, we’re gonna put a siege around this embassy, every week we’re gonna keep comin’ back until we get him out of this country! Out! Out!

[crowd cheers: Out! Out! Out! Out! Out! Out! Out!]

As long as there’s a siege in Gaza, there’s gonna be a siege on this embassy and we’re not gonna lift it until the people of Gaza are free.

Mr Flanaganyou said last week only under exceptional circumstances could an ambassador be expelled. Well is this not exceptional enough for ya?

Six decades of ethnic cleansing, constant war crimes of bombing of children and families and civilians is that not exceptional enough?!

Is Apartheid, is that not exceptional enough?!

Isn’t racism and vile lies spewed out of this embassy every week, is that not exceptional enough?!

Get him out, out of this country!

Hogan spent a week in Israel’s Givon prison after the Irish ship, the MV Saoirse, part of the 2011 Freedom Waves to Gaza campaign, was intercepted and nearly destroyed by Israeli naval forces in international waters on the way to Gaza.

Him and his shipmates on the Saoirse have setup a group called Gaza Action Ireland. Their next project will be bringing school kids from Gaza to play soccer in Ireland, called Gaza Kids.

Thousands of protestors participated in Dublin’s march and rally in solidarity with Palestine on Saturday, the 5th demonstration in Ireland since Israel’s most recent war on Gaza began last month.

Hogan names the names. Calls them out.

Someone needs to name the names of the US critters in the US(Israel/AIPAC) Congress. Yes … the servants who are on their knees with heads deep into AIPAC/Israel feed troughs…

The revered John Lewis of Atlanta, is one of them. I have called his office repeatedly, and still, he has failed to speak out on behalf of the voiceless in Gaza. Not a single Black leader in the Congress voted against recent pro Israel resolutions. This is shameful. John Lewis no longer deserves such veneration.

What a fiery speech, full of passion, and no fear of reprisals that may come.

Hope he keeps that momentum going, and that he will be safe.

Trevor Hogan, in the true tradition of. Paidrig Pearse , James Connolly and Wolf Tone.

Three earlier Irish heroes who stood up to aggression.

Kay 24 , no one would dare harm Mr Hogan. That would bring out tens of thousands onto the streets and give BDS in Ireland a major shot in the arm.

They will just have to put up with him.

Terrific, heartfelt speech the passion of which will be recognised by anyone who has seen what he has seen. About time the so-called ambassadors were shamed and called to account. Good luck to you Trevor – Irish people can recognise a colonial, repressive regime when they see it, and are unafraid to say so.

After the marches, it is an important time to do something practical – wonder how many brilliant doctors there are in the US – retired or otherwise who could be encouraged to go to Gaza and help- now that would be inspirational and encouraging…

Trevor’s quiet as a church mouse regarding Assad’s crime in Syria.

If it counts when 1800 arabs are killed by Jews, then whey doesn’t his passion get aroused Sunnis are killing non-Sunni in Syria. Isis no problem, 170,000 dead in Syria, move on… but Israelis attacking Gaza, and all the little anti-semites in little Ireland got their mad caps on.

Patrick Cockburn was quite emphatic on this morning’s Democracy Now! in saying that it was the West’s campaign of trying to end Assad’s rule in Syria that built up ISIS to its present threatening dimensions.

Hasbara 101. The look over there “defense”. There is no way in Hell that anyone can defend the actions of Israel so instead we get this: “Bad things are happening in other places so you must be a Jew hater to oppose Israel”. Absolutely pathetic.

      • biorabbi
        biorabbi on August 13, 2014, 4:45 pm

As a proud zionist, the defense is precisely so obscene. Just looking at hte sheer quantity of displaced, dead, raped, beheaded, ethnically cleansed… b/w Israel/Gaza and Assad versus Syria is so unbalanced. It proves my point. It is not about

        a. Israel as a nation state, or
        b. about Syria as a nation state, but
        c. about anti-semitism.

The multiple attacks throughout Europe against non-Israeli Jewish targets also proves my point.

        Bonus question to Mondoweiss:

Why do European protests against Israel wind up at Synagogues?
How does kill the Jews chants in Germany address Gaza?
What’s with the constant linkage between Israel/Bibi and the swastika?

But most of the posters and commenters here are savvy, so, look at the bright side: as long as Israel keeps existing, you can hide your views on Jews behind anti-zionism.

Ah yes, that will be 102, when in doubt fall back on the ‘clash of civilisations’ world war three hysteria blah blah. Make special reference to exaggerated and false European scare stories (impresses the gullible US isolationists). And then top it off with old anti-semitism under the bed routine. voila. Yes, so much to be proud of.

So much faux concern for dead Syrians yet so little in the way of empathy for the victims of Operation Corrective Fudge.

        1. I think the London protest wound up at Hyde Park.
        2. They don’t. Much in the same way that Israeli far-right chants of ‘kill the Arabs’ fail to address Gaza.
        3. Evidently, many believe history is repeating itself’.

biorabbi-To see you resort to that weakest of arguments, ‘whataboutery’, is disappointing. How is your argument any different from someone who just killed his family saying to detractors, “But what about that mass murdererer last year who killed 5 times more people than I did? You have no right to criticize me unless you criticized him!” In any case, as I see from other posters here, you are completely wrong as he has spoken out about Syrian and other violence. Ouch, that’s gotta hurt!

Last time I checked, the US and Western govts. weren’t supporting Assad or ISIS. Well, the latter is open to question. But we certainly aren’t officially supporting ISIS. So, that is why. Is that simple enough for you? We DO support Israel, with money and diplomatic protection.

(JTA) — Congregants at a synagogue in the Hamptons on New York’s Long Island pledged more than $1 million at a fundraiser for Israel.
The money raised at the Aug. 9 gathering following Shabbat at The Hampton Synagogue in Westhampton Beach will go to the UJA-Federation of New York’s Israel Emergency Fund, which assists organizations that provide medical treatment and economic support for Israelis in the wake of conflict.
“I am humbled and overwhelmed with gratitude and pride over the show of support by our congregation, that realizes the depths of the trauma — of the pain and suffering of Israelis — and reached deep to help however they could during this tragic and terrible crisis,” the synagogue’s rabbi, Marc Schneier, said in a news release.>>>>

“”.. depths of the trauma — of the pain and suffering of Israelis”’???? — well almost lost my lunch on this one.

I am sure if US Muslim mosques are raising money for Gaza victims they are being labled Hamas terrorist supporters and wont even be able to get their money out of the US to Gaza and will be investigated by half a dozen US agencies…and oh yeah, also called anti semitic and in a plot to wipe out the Jews and Israel.

Up is down, wrong is right, black is the new white….Orwell had a crystal ball.
