Clinton baits Sanders over ‘destruction of Israel’

on 65 Comments

Israel’s interests are becoming an explicit issue in the Democratic nomination to be president. The Clinton campaign says Bernie Sanders’s recent comments about Iran are risking Israel’s security. Sanders wants to normalize relations with a country that “seeks the destruction of Israel,” the campaign says. And his ideas for Iranian ground troops in Syria would put Israel’s enemy “right on Israel’s doorstep.”

The swipes are featured in a new video of Jake Sullivan, a senior foreign policy adviser to Clinton. He first blasts Sanders for suggesting that Iran take a more active role against ISIS in Syria. Sanders has said, “Iran has to join us… I think the folks that have got to be on the ground are the people who are fighting for the soul of Islam. That is not American troops, that is troops from the region. They can’t sit it out.”

Sullivan said:

It would be putting more Iranian firepower right on Israel’s doorstep.

A letter Clinton released from ten foreign policy veterans earlier this week also made the Israeli “doorstep” charge (Full text at TPM):

Supporting Iranian soldiers on Israel’s doorstep is a grave mistake.

Later in his video, Jake Sullivan calls out Sanders for saying that we “should move aggressively as we can to normalize relations with Iran.” Sullivan says:

Iran seeks the destruction of Israel. Iran is a leading sponsor of terror in the region. Iran is flouting international law with its ballistic tests and its threats against our international partners….

Normal relations with Iran? President Obama doesn’t support that idea… and it’s not at all clear why Senator Sanders is suggesting it.

When you look at all these ideas it’s pretty clear that he just hasn’t thought it through.

[The press] should keep asking these questions because the stakes are too high to just let this slide.

On an earlier conference call with reporters Sullivan said that Iranian normalization “would cause very real consternation among our allies and partners.” Meaning Israel and Saudi Arabia. The New York Times says Sullivan first made the Israel charge on that conference call:

Later, in a conference call with reporters, Mr. Sullivan was more direct: “Many of you know Iran has pledged the destruction of Israel.”

The destruction claim is a dubious one. While some Iranian leaders have predicted that Israel will cease to exist in the next generation, and some hotheads have called for its destruction (in a climate of mutual threats), the foreign minister has said that if Israel resolves the Palestinian issue, Iran could recognize the state.

Donors and the Israel lobby are a big part of Clinton’s tactics. The Times even wrote, “The Clinton strategy on this front raises the risk of deterring powerful supporters of Israel from embracing Mr. Sanders should he capture the nomination.”

Clinton herself voiced the criticism of Sanders’s foreign policy ideas as unthought-through in “blistering” attacks on Sanders yesterday in Iowa, according to CNN. And CNN notes that Sanders has responded by questioning Clinton’s judgment on foreign policy.

Sanders’ campaign has responded to the critiques by questioning Clinton’s judgment and noting her 2002 vote for the Iraq War, something that then-Sen. Barack Obama used against her during her failed 2008 campaign.

In related news, Clinton has hired a Jewish outreach director who has strong pro-Israel cred. And another story on the importance of the Israel lobby: Lobelog has a good story up that says Senator Marco Rubio has been parroting neoconservative Elliott Abrams’s talking points on the Iranian hostage deal earlier this week. The piece notes that neocons are blasting the American deal when they praised Israel’s deal for Gilad Shalit. Israel is always virtuous.

AS TO THE F.P. VIEWS OF HILLARY CLINTON’S MOST IMPORTANT “ADVISOR” (I.E., HAIM SABAN), SEE: “Haim Saban”, by Matthew Yglesias, The Atlantic, June 10, 2007

[EXCERPT] If you’re interested in the foreign policy views of major Hillary Clinton financial backer Haim Saban, there’s no need to follow the Atrios path of attempting guilt by association with Kenneth Pollack. He [Saban] discussed his views on the Middle East and Persian Gulf region in great detail in a reasonably recent interview with ‘Haaretz’:

“When I see Ahmadinejad, I see Hitler. They speak the same language. His motivation is also clear: the return of the Mahdi is a supreme goal. And for a religious person of deep self-persuasion, that supreme goal is worth the liquidation of five and a half million Jews. We cannot allow ourselves that. Nuclear weapons in the hands of a religious leadership that is convinced that the annihilation of Israel will bring about the emergence of a new Muslim caliphate? Israel cannot allow that. This is no game. It’s truly an existential danger.” . . .

P.S. ALSO SEE: “Where Does Hillary Stand on the Iran Agreement?”, by Eli Clifton,, April, 19,2015

[EXCERPT] . . . Saban, a pro-Israel powerhouse within the Democratic Party, lavishly funds Bill Clinton’s presidential foundation as well as the American Israel Education Foundation (AIEF). This fundraising arm of AIPAC arranges for congressional junkets to Israel, among other projects.

Between 2008 and 2013, Saban’s family foundation pumped over $8 million into the Clinton presidential foundation in Little Rock, Arkansas and contributed $5 million to the AIEF. AIPAC has expressed reservations about the framework agreement, warning that it “could result in a final agreement that will leave Iran as a threshold nuclear state.”

Saban has gone even further. Speaking alongside GOP megadonor Sheldon Adelson at an Israeli-American Council conference in November, Saban criticized the Obama administration’s negotiating tactics with Iran, complaining, “we’ve shown too many carrots and a very small stick.” He warned that if necessary to defend Israel against Iran, “I would bomb the living daylights out of the sons of bitches.”

Indeed, Saban, a dual Israeli-U.S. citizen, has also been supportive of the Israeli military. Between 2008 and 2013, Saban gave $7.43 million to Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, a group that provides support for serving members of the IDF and the families of fallen soldiers, according to tax documents. . .

Holy crud, what a piece of stinking propaganda.

Does she seriously believe that Shia Islam calls for the destruction of the world to bring forward the Mahdi?

I’m no fan of the Iranian regime (or most regimes, honestly) but she’s acting like Israel hasn’t been going around assassinating Iranian scientists and expanding aggressively for the last 60 years.

The response of the people in the studio though is very refreshing and promising.

      • Kathleen on January 23, 2016, 2:52 am

And the last person’s suggestion that the international community should demand more nuclear transparency from Israel. Phillips had her radical prejudices handed to her on a platter….The audience said it all…

JLD, thanks for the clip of ‘mad Mel’ wondered where she had been, now I know she must be locked up in an asylum somewhere for her own protection. But to be fair, she does not sound much different from all of your Presidential candidates in their debates.

I don’t know who this woman is, but she sure is a mouthpiece for the zionist propaganda. I don’t know how long ago this was taken, but today it seems she is totally WRONG. President Rouhani has done what he promised at that time. He has reached out to the world, and is now working with the international community.

Her father land, seems unable to work with the rest of the world – if they did they would have ended the occupation and stopped stealing lands belonging to the Palestinians.

Today Iran is looking better than Israel does, at least they have signed a nuclear agreement, and seems to cooperate with other nations on this.

I hope she thinks making an idiot of herself like this is worthwhile.

      • BeamMeUp on January 23, 2016, 2:44 pm

I really don’t ‘get’ our alliance to Zionist Israel. They get approximately 1/3 of the US foreign aid budget, they comprise 1/1000 of the world population and have one of the world/s highest per capita income. I have read articles claiming Israel has 80-150-300 nuclear warheads. Let’s just take the lowest claim of 80 (from a Guardian article 3 June 2014). No weapons inspectors have found nuclear weapons in Iran. Just like they didn’t in Iraq….but that didn’t stop us. And,as far as a full outright attack/invasion of another country, Iran hasn’t done that in over several centuries. All that said, what the devil is Israel doing destroying Palestinian homes and taking their land? That, I find, even more abhorrent, given their history in Nazi Germany. I am not claiming to have the answers, but when one looks at the situation and the horrific destruction going on in the Middle East, one has to question, what is really going on??? Fear mongering and war mongering is going on all over (seems especially true when you watch US mainstream media). Israel is completely capable of defending itself, why does our money have to go over there? Common people don’t want war. Greed, corruption and power fuel the decisions of the power elite, making their power completely immoral as far as I am concerned. And sadly, the US is just as guilty.

Melanie Phillips is a well-known neocon in the U.K. I consider her to be an acolyte of the British orientalist/Islamophobe Bernard Lewis.

WIKIPEDIA: Melanie Phillips is a British journalist, author and public commentator. She started on the left of the political spectrum, writing for The Guardian and New Statesman. During the 1990s she moved to the right, and currently writes for The Times, Jerusalem Post and Jewish Chronicle, covering political and social issues from a social conservative perspective. Phillips defines herself as a liberal who has “been mugged by reality.”[2] . . .

. . . The BBC has said that Phillips “is regarded as one of the [British] media’s leading right-wing voices” and a “controversial” columnist.[15] She began her career on the left[14] with The Guardian. Her drift to the political right has been mirrored by her journalistic career: she now writes for the Daily Mail, and Nick Cohen wrote in 2011 that she has become vilified by The Guardian,[16] while Phillips herself stated in 2006 that her views are often misrepresented by her former newspaper.[14]

        Global politics[edit]
She is a staunch critic of Iran and has written and spoken frequently about the threat she perceives it to be, particularly if it were to obtain nuclear weapons.[17][18] The Iranian regime, she writes, “has seen itself at war with the west ever since it came to power in 1979, and which has been involved in arguably every major terrorist atrocity against it”. In her view, Iran’s leaders are “religious fanatics” who are “impervious to reason” and who “would be happy” to bring about an apocalyptic end of days. Thus, “there is no alternative to force if it is to be stopped”.[18] She has drawn criticism for her hard-line approach from various commentators.[19][20]

She has said that she supports a two-state solution in theory but that it cannot work in practice, commenting: “I would have no problem with a Palestine that would live in peace alongside Israel … I respond to the evidence of what is actually happening. Israel is being demonised … If Israel were to leave the West Bank, it would turn Islamist overnight and become an Iranian proxy on Israel’s doorstep. That is why I cannot support a state of Palestine.”[21]

Phillips’s criticisms of liberal Jews who disagree with her positions on Israel have been condemned by writers such as Alan Dershowitz, Rabbi David Goldberg and Jonathan Freedland. Freedland criticised Phillips’s labelling Independent Jewish Voices, a group of liberal Jews, as “Jews For Genocide”. He wrote in The Jewish Chronicle: “Now, as it happens, I have multiple criticisms of IJV … but even their most trenchant opponents must surely blanch at the notion that these critics of Israel and of Anglo-Jewish officialdom are somehow in favour of genocide—literally, eager to see the murder and eradication of the Jewish people … it is an absurdity, one that drains the word ‘genocide’ of any meaning.”[22]

        United States[edit]
Since the election of Barack Obama, Phillips has accused him of “adopting the agenda of the Islamist” and of being “firmly in the Islamists camp”.[23] Shortly after Obama’s re-election for a second term, Phillips said that “Four years ago, America put into the White House a sulky narcissist with an unbroken history of involvement in thuggish, corrupt, far-left, black power, Jew-bashing, west-hating politics.” She warned that Obama would lead America into a “terrifying darkness”. The Independent termed it “rather odd” and an “angry rant”,[24] which “sparked debate on Twitter.”[25]

Phillips came to the defence of 2016 US presidential candidate Donald Trump in a Times column on 11 December 2015.[26] . . .

  3. on January 22, 2016, 1:43 pm

Lets assume the threat was genuine. Even then, what exactly is wrong with wanting the destroy Israel as a political actor through military means? (Serious question)

Israel is a terrorist organisation masquerading as a legitimate country, and any threats to destroy the terror group should be commended, not played down. BDS is also a means to the same end, but only because it is impossible to militarily take down this terror group while it is being backed by the USA. If that wasn’t the case, the saga would have long concluded in 60’s with minimal bloodshed.

    • diasp0ra on January 22, 2016, 1:59 pm

BDS does not seek the destruction of Israel.

BDS has three goals, all of which are for Israel to comply with international law.

If Israel reformed itself to a society that is not ruled by an ethnocentric ideology then the compliance with international law would not harm Israel in the slightest. It would, in fact, strengthen it.

jake sullivan is wrong — hands down. of course SA and iran should get on the same page. note how he references the burning of the SA embassy in iran and SA just cut off diplomatic ties w/iran and failed to mention WHY those events happened. failed to mention SA just chopped off the head of the shia cleric for non violent protest. failed to mention SA (our so called “ally”) has been funding the salafists in syria and iraq. instead of isolating iran, we should get on the same page wrt ending the extremist threat in the region, the same threat SA (and US “inadvertently”) is funding. iran is not the problem w/isis, iran is fighting isis.

“our biggest problem is our allies, our allies in the region”:

  5. on January 22, 2016, 2:29 pm

We need to agree on a definition of “destroy” in this particular context. I don’t see it as a levelling of everything within the claimed Israeli borders. Such destruction is a colossal waste of energy and only makes sense in the minds of the most deranged of us. Iran is not a merely rational actor, it is a extraordinarily sophisticated one that speaks with absolute refinement and wisdom, far beyond the ability of the crippled Zionist mind to understand.

If Israel became everything you demanded of it, i.e. obey the international law, allow equal rights, embrace justice and fairness etc, then it is for all intent and purpose, destroyed for me. Which is a good, welcomed destruction, like chemo to cancer cells in our body.

    • MHughes976 on January 23, 2016, 3:31 am

We certainly face propaganda, which has worked fairly well, whereby the call for the destruction of an oppressive system in the name of human rights is portrayed as a call for death and destruction regardless of human rights. It may not work for ever.

Yeah, but all the stupid bitching about Israel’s doorstep aside, how about Sanders’ I wont say stupid, but downright demented idea of expanding and worsening the Syrian war by importing both Iranian and Saudis directly into it?
It’s all Muslims to him, I suppose.
As long as he can expand US wars without risking being yelled at by GI families, I suppose sending towelheads to die killing other towelheads, as is happening in Yemen to his cheering, counts as “socialism”.

Manicheaism (摩 尼 教 ) anybody? Good v. Evil. The Great Good v. the Great Satan? All or nothing? War to end all civilizations?

BTW, you really gotta love these puerile politicians, these children, who, knowing they can get away with saying anything and will never be called to account, spout the most deliciously hateful garbage. These politicians, Israeli and American (esp. witting Zionist-stooge-variety), speak an odd language com posed of nothing but “fear”-talk and “threat”-talk.

Hope Bernie can straighten them out by continuing to build popularity in spite of their meretricious pandering.

  8. lysias on January 22, 2016, 4:41 pm

Clinton allies are also smearing Sanders as a Communist sympathizer, according to Glenn Greenwald. They’re desperate. I can see how that might appeal to people who are still stuck in Cold War thinking, but how many of those are still around?

    • Lillian Rosengarten on January 23, 2016, 10:52 am

Hillary’s self serving attacks on Bernie are based on distortions and lies . The biggest threat is Israel’s brutal endless occupation in it’s quest for a Jewish state only. This dream has long died. Hillary is pandering to millionaire zionists and this is how she hopes to get elected. She is a bitter disappointment and her attacks will only work against her. Who the hell are her advisors? They are clueless and completely disingenuous. The US support of Israel’s occupation will and MUST change.

  9. JWalters on January 22, 2016, 4:57 pm

Questioner: Secretary Clinton, you have taken substantial amounts of money from a billionaire who profits from Israel’s illegal occupation in Palestine, and who funds the continuing expansion of illegal Israeli settlements there. Do you support these settlement policies of Israel, and what do you think of the view that these settlements are inflammatory actions, provoking conflict in the region?

Hillary: Wellll, as you know,,, I’ve always been a supporter of children and families…. And these Israeli children and families, who are by the way lucky to be alive after the Holocaust, which we must never forget, they need a place to live. Now, it is unfortunate that Palestinian children and families are already living there. But they are all terrorists, or will become terrorists, who want to destroy Israel, who, as you know, is our best ally and the only democracy in the region. So I think it’s not realistic or practical to oppose the settlements. In fact, as president I would immediately invite Prime Minister Netanyahu to the White House to discuss the placement of the next round of settlements, and how they will protect America’s security.

Interesting to see how Bernie will shoot back, and I strongly believe he should.

I’m already waiting for the moment when the Clinton campaign calls Bernie Sanders openly an anti-semite who wants to destroy Israel, for what proof is in his desire to mormalize relations with Iran. If she does so, I’m convinced major jewish organisations will join the accusation and Clinton will say that this is further proof that Sanders surely was just another anti-semite.

Would be interesting to see how that would play out.

    • annie on January 22, 2016, 6:06 pm

if she does so, I’m convinced major jewish organisations will join the accusation

it’s rather ironic bandelero because sanders might have a decent shot at being the first american jewish president if he wins the primary. i guess it’s just not the type of jew major jewish organisations are interested in.

      • lysias on January 22, 2016, 6:16 pm

Barry Goldwater was half-Jewish, but he didn’t get much support on that account.

      • Bandolero on January 22, 2016, 8:45 pm

Yes, I understand that. And I believe, wouldn’t it be that Bernie Sanders was jewish, the attack line would all along been that he who argues for better relations with Iran, something what Israel dislikes, must be an anti-semite. And, against any non-jewish candidate that may have destroyed his candicacy.

However, Bernie Sanders is jewish. And my imagination is that Hillary takes a big risk with this attack-line on Bernie that he isn’t enough pro-Israel, or one may say, it implies, she attacks him with the line that he isn’t pro-jewish enough, but she is. I think that’s a major mistake from her side because she opened up a fight on a ground where Bernie has a significant advantage: he is jewish. It’s like if John McCain would accuse Obama he isn’t black enough, it’s ridiculous, and therefore he couldn’t win that one, never ever. So my expectation is that Bernie hits back, and hard, and nails Hillary on this. I’m sure if he plays this well she can’t win this argument. Even though it’s clear that the major jewish organisations like AIPAC will support Hillary against Bernie he can get her down on this.

That said, I believe, if Bernie manages to nail Hillary over Israel and Iran in substance and about who is more “pro-jewish” in emotion, he may win Iowa and NH, and if that happens, Hillary is as good as done. The time for this would be right now, and this may be the only realistic shot Bernie gets.

I wish very much for this to happen because Hillary for her serial crimes of mass murderous aggressive wars for Israel belongs into a jail and not into any office anymore.

      • annie on January 23, 2016, 12:15 am

do you think hillary would be “done” if sanders won in Iowa and NH? so fast? i think hillary is not smart by continuing to pander to her financial supporters (saban etc) instead of the american people. driving home the idea she is a total neocon and adopting netanyahu’s rhetoric on iran is not smart. sanders should stick to his guns over what he said — hold firm. if she doubles down on this her numbers will only continue to drop. i agree she re “major mistake from her side because she opened up a fight on a ground where Bernie has a significant advantage”. the more she says israel, the worse it will be for her.

most people are sick of israel. it’s toxic.

      • lysias on January 22, 2016, 8:50 pm

Especially since we know from Hillary’s emails exchanged with Sidney Blumenthal that she doesn’t believe a word of what she says about Israel.

      • Kathleen on January 23, 2016, 1:15 pm

Annie no way for Hillary to switch over to small donation folks now. Of course she can pretend that smaller donors are important. However she has all ready cast the die to the millionaire but mostly billionaire class. No way to turn tail now and look authentic,

Have been really examining why I can’t support Hillary. I want to witness a woman become President almost as much as anyone. However I loathe anyone who supports unnecessary invasions (Iraq) and unwarranted military interventions (Libya and Syria). Clinton we know supported Iraq and pushed for Libya and Syria. Despicable in my book and she should line up behind Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz and team for being complicit in war crimes. Obama and Clinton belong in line for being held responsible for complicity in the disasters in Libya and Syria. I despise war hawks. She is one.

On top of that her Wall Street dependency by choice is too much to swallow. She is a living example of how power corrupts in such murderous ways.

Sanders is by far the best bet for the majority of the American people and for a far less insane and murderous foreign policy. I get it that he and Hillary are not much different on Israel and Palestine. However I really think Sanders still has a conscience.

      • Kris on January 23, 2016, 1:21 pm

@Kathleen: “Have been really examining why I can’t support Hillary.”

From a terrific essay on why so many can’t support Hillary:

Maybe it would be easier to vote for Hillary Clinton if she wasn’t such an insistently unconvincing liar. Bill Clinton used lies the way Van Gogh used yellow, to intensify and transcend reality. Hillary’s lies are shameless and strident and form not so much an argument as a cascading aural sludge pile. Most Sanders’ supporters, armed with facts but not hip waders, are forced to back slowly away from her speeches lest the rising effluent suck them down to the cretinous levels of centrists, neoliberals, and Joan Walsh.

You don’t need a degree in oncology to know that Clintonism is an ever metastasizing cancer on the body of the Democratic party. If politics is the art of the possible, Clintonism is defining possibility downward. At its core is the belief that a nation can triangulate out of the responsibilities of a social conscience.

      • Bandolero on January 23, 2016, 3:45 pm

Yes, I do think that if – big if – Bernie wins both Iowa and NH then Hillary is toast. So fast.

Hillary’s campaign is dependent on the perception that she will win the presidency. That is for voters who think she’s is most promising option to get a democrat into the white house, as well as for donors and media betting on Hillary as the winning horse. If she loses both Iowa and NH, the notion that she’s a winner has no credibility anymore. Bernie looks like a winner, media and papers will be full of Bernie the winner and Hillary the loser titles, and some big donors will hold back their money to her, because won’t want to bet on a losing horse. After Super Tuesday, which she isn’t likely to win if she can’t neither win conservative Iowa or progressive NH, she may then well throw the towel.

The opposite is also true. If Hillary manages to win both Iowa and NH, Bernie is likely toast. She can message then to voters: get real, Bernie is a nice guy, but flock to me, and quick, because we’ll have to defeat the GOP, and I’m the one to do it, and will likely succeed with that message.

Just if each of Bernie and Hillary win one of Iowa & NH, I’ld expect a longer Democratic primary race.

      • Shmuel on January 23, 2016, 4:01 pm

Even though it’s clear that the major jewish organisations like AIPAC will support Hillary against Bernie he can get her down on this.

He can always be “Jew-boyed”, but that’s a double-edged sword, because it implies that as a Jew, Sanders’ (or Shapiro’s) first loyalty should be to Israel. It basically implies that a Jew can never be president.

Unfortunately, this is exactly why Sanders is likely to lose to Trump should he receive the nomination (which I doubt the powers that be in the Democratic Party establishment will allow to happen anyway).

Red baiting will be only one of the many disgusting fear-and-ignorance-based tactics the American people will fall for in a Trump vs. Sanders race. We are conditioned to respond like idiots because we are idiots.

NEVER Joemowrey. It’s time to stand up against charges of antiSemitism, anti-Israel and say NO! Israel is not a Democracy (only for Jews) . HAVE YOU SEEN THIS??? MOST HORRIFYING

Chief Israeli rabbi calls for executing Palestinians
      Posted: 21 Jan 2016 04:08 PM PST

We must not allow a Palestinian to survive after he was arrested. If you leave him alive, he will be released and kill other people,” Eliyahu said, “we must eradicate this evil from within our midst.”

Days of Palestine, Jerusalem –Chief Israeli Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu has called for executing Palestinians in order to afford safety for the Israeli occupation states.

“Israeli army has to stop arresting Palestinians,” he posted on his Facebook wall, “but, it must execute them and leave no one alive.”

According to public disclosures, by giving just 12 speeches to Wall Street banks, private equity firms, and other financial corporations, Clinton made $2,935,000 from 2013 to 2015:
Also, both Clintons have taken millions of dollars in speaking fees from the health care industry. According to public disclosures, Hillary Clinton alone, from 2013 to 2015, made $2,847,000 from 13 paid speeches to the industry. This does not include millions of contributions to the Clinton Foundation from contributors like Saudi Arabia, who critics say were used as bribes to influence US policy. Anyone! anyone! would be a better candidate for President than this corrupt war Goddess.

OT, very sympathetic article about Ayman Odeh in the new New Yorker. Very critical of Israel. And very significant, because it is written by New Yorker editor David Remnick.

I read everyday. I’ve always heard that particular government referred to by interviewees as “The Zionist”, as in “…the destruction of The Zionists…”, but never as “Israel”, as in “the destruction of Israel…” But Corporate/Bankster/M-I-C/Lobby-run media always are sure to substitute “Israel” for “The Zionist.” They know that all of Jewish people are not Zionists, but the substitution helps sway the Knuckle-Draggers who think they really ARE “conservatives.”

Not voting for Hillary. Voting for Jill Stein. Hillary has no more regard for Brothers & Sisters in US murdered by police than she does for Palestinian people murdered by the IDF.

It looks like Bernie has answered to Hillary:

    A Hawk or a Dove?

“Secretary Clinton claims credit for what she calls the ‘diplomacy that keeps us out of war.’ But slick television ads can’t hide her hawkish record.

“As a senator, she voted in 2002 for the war in Iraq, one of the worst foreign policy blunders in modern American history. As a House member, Sanders voted against the war and led opposition to the Bush-Cheney military fiasco. …

“With Sen. Sanders, putting a priority on diplomacy is part of his record, not just his rhetoric.”

In that video clip of Jake Sullivan repeating the lies that Iran seeks to destroy Israel some how he fails to mention that Hillary Clinton and team supplied arsonist (rebel groups) with their deadly matches that have fueled death and destruction in Syria. Clinton helped light Syria on fire. As well as Iraq and Libya. Somehow slipped Jake’s mind

  18. Kay24 on January 23, 2016, 5:21 am

It would seem that Hillary has not learned from past mistakes. She lost to Obama after a series of unfair attacks, and a bunch of lies, yet her desperation is making her resort to the same mistakes.
Hillary has lost credibility among many Democrats, and she has not a good record when it comes to playing it clean, or straight.

It is ironic that a Democrat is brown nosing Israel so much, proclaiming her loyalty, promising to invite yet another notorious liar, Nutty Yahoo, to the White House when she becomes President.

What these politicians won’t do for campaign funds.

Surely we have more decent allies to invite, and not parasites and trouble makers. After his disgraceful sabotaging of Obama’s nuclear deal initiatives with Iran, manipulation of Congress, interference in our foreign policies, she still wants to invite THAT?

It’s not that I enjoy being disruptive –I don’t. One more thing I thought should not be let pass without an observation:

It is ironic that a Democrat is brown nosing Israel so much

Where is the irony? The Democrats have always been the pro-Zionist party par excellence. Not that the Republicans are any better in practice.

      • Kay24 on January 23, 2016, 11:50 am

True that. However I think it is mostly the Repubs that show their undying love for the rogue nation (Huckerbee and others during the first Repub debate), and far less the Dems. Now that Hillary has a solid zionist backer, she has joined the chorus.

      • echinococcus on January 23, 2016, 2:46 pm

It’s only natural that the so-called “liberal” wing of the Democrats will tend to support more the ex-Labor (now Zionist Bloc, well named) and the corresponding DC outfit J-Street. I do not consider them any less Zionist than Likud or even more outspoken factions, only much more dangerous: their human-face comedy would provide a perfect pretext to many corrupt country leaders waiting to normalize Zionism again (while the Zionists continue the genocide undeterred.)
That is precisely why in my view a “Labor” victory (or a Sanders government here) would be the worst possible development for Palestinians. Likud and the Neocons, on the other hand, are working overtime in favor of the Palestinian resistance.

      • MHughes976 on January 23, 2016, 2:51 pm

She did lose to Obama after unfair attacks but in the mist important of those, the one concerning Jeremiah Wright – which was really about the ME – she failed only because Obama responded so brilliantly by convincing everyone that it was dreadfully unfair to think that he shared or had ever shared or had ever given Wright reason to think he might share Wright’s view of life. The promises he made at that point coukd never be retracted. Whether he sold his soul thinking he could buy it back when in office or whether he had no soul to sell may be debated. Part of the upshot was the boost to Ms.C by becoming Secretary of State. She and the Zionists among her backers have reason to think they know their business well.

  19. Ossinev on January 23, 2016, 7:04 am

Ref the comments on Melanie Phillips above. For those of you who are not familiar with the loathsome Ms Phillips she is a regular columnist with the Times here in the UK and can be relied upon by the Zionist/Israel lobby to spin every available article to sell the Zionist/Israel “cause”. Witness her latest piece on the death of the Jewish publisher George Weidenfield in yesterday`s Times.:
“What drove his seemingly inexhaustible political and intellectual initiatives was to make the world a better place. Some of this struck a chord with me – his commitent to Israel, his concern about Islamic extremism, his belief that anti – zionism was a fresh mutation of Jew-hatred which endangered not just Israel but the entire western world”.

The spin is blatant of course with the implication that commitment to Israel is necessary if you are concerned about Islamic extremism. The last comment though is an absolute corker and illustrates just how “paranoid” this creature and her fellow Zionists and !sraeli firsters have become. Apparently according to Ms Phillips logic if you are against land theft, apartheid legal systems ,extrajudicial murders, wholesale slaughter of defenceless civilians including hundreds of children you are endangering not just her beloved Israel but the entire world.

Having said that I think that it is great that she and her like are given maximum airtime. And if you want to get an even fuller flavour of this moron`s thinking have a look at:

Her website is an absolute Hasbara hoot which inevitably raises the old question of why these cretins who have so much contempt for the UK and Europe and their citizens are still here and not living out their Zionist dream in a stolen apartment over in dear old Hevron whiling away the days throwing dog excrement on passing Palestinian mothers and children in the streets below.

    • Maximus Decimus Meridius on January 24, 2016, 7:31 am

And just like her fellow British ‘passionate Zionists’, Maureen Lipman or Jonathan Freedland (of whom Mad Mel is simply a less sophisticated version), Philips’ love for Israel’ does not of course extend to actually living in the kip. All of these people have done very well out of life in a liberal, multi-ethnic democracy, but they would deny this to Palestinians in their spare country.

  20. Citizen on January 23, 2016, 10:22 am

Fox news is attacking Obama for indirectly supporting Hamas and Hezbollah by trying to normalize relations with Iran, the state sponsor of Terrorism. I wonder what the average American thinks about Hamas and Hezbollah–I imagine they know zero about Hamas & Hezbollah and believe they are little terrorist groups. Do they think Hamas & Hezbollah are a threat to US security?

    • Kay24 on January 23, 2016, 11:56 am

They only know the names, and believe the exaggerations and lies by Israel. Israel MUST refer to both groups as “terrorists” to justify bombing of civilians in Lebanon and Palestinian territories.
All it takes is the rogue nation to say they are “defending” themselves from terrorist attacks, and you will find American Presidents and leaders supporting it by saying they have the right to “defend” themselves. The Palestinians are NOT entitled to “defend” themselves, they have to be the targets of Israel’s precision bombs and be the guinea pigs for the latest Israeli weapons being tested. A sorry state of affairs.

    • Ellen on January 24, 2016, 4:05 pm

Fox News and CNN have convinced Americans that a threat to the Zionist project, or what is called Israel, is a threat to not only the US but to their homes, their daughters…..their life!

Reality is, the created state of Israel has really nothing to do with anything in the US. Not even the cherry tomatoes, nor generic drugs, nor computer chips. All that is irrelevant…..meaningless.

      • Kay24 on January 24, 2016, 10:51 pm

It is a brilliant master plan. The media is controlled by their minions, buy members of the congress, control think tanks, and make sure any criticism of your crimes, are met with howls of anti-semitism, and personal attacks of those criticizing. Justifying all massacres with the now predictable claims of “defending” themselves, and throw a huge tantrum and demand for more aid from your sugar daddy. Yeah, brilliantly (and deviously) thought through, and masterfully enforced.

No, Israel has no rights to any part of the US, but it would be interesting to know why they act like they control and manipulate our entire system when it comes to our policies.

    • Kathleen on January 24, 2016, 1:01 pm

STAGE 1: Polite condescension toward what is perceived to be harmless (we think it’s really wonderful that your views are being aired).

STAGE 2: Light, casual mockery as the self-belief among supporters grows (no, dears, a left-wing extremist will not win, but it’s nice to see you excited).

STAGE 3: Self-pity and angry etiquette lectures directed at supporters upon realization that they are not performing their duty of meek surrender, flavored with heavy doses of concern trolling (nobody but nobody is as rude and gauche online to journalists as these crusaders, and it’s unfortunately hurting their candidate’s cause!).

STAGE 4: Smear the candidate and his supporters with innuendos of sexism and racism by falsely claiming only white men support them (you like this candidate because he’s white and male like you, not because of ideology or policy or contempt for the party establishment’s corporatist, pro-war approach).

STAGE 5: Brazen invocation of right-wing attacks to marginalize and demonize, as polls prove the candidate is a credible threat (he’s weak on terrorism, will surrender to ISIS, has crazy associations, and is a clone of Mao and Stalin).

STAGE 6: Issuance of grave and hysterical warnings about the pending apocalypse if the establishment candidate is rejected, as the possibility of losing becomes imminent (you are destined for decades, perhaps even generations, of powerlessness if you disobey our decrees about who to select).

STAGE 7: Full-scale and unrestrained meltdown, panic, lashing-out, threats, recriminations, self-important foot-stomping, overt union with the Right, complete fury (I can no longer in good conscience support this party of misfits, terrorist-lovers, communists, and heathens).

Iran has given numerous signals for many years now, that it will accept Israel within its pre-1967 borders, if this is acceptable to the Palestinians.

Many rich and powerful Jews in the US try to keep this fact concealed from the American public,

The more I hear from Clinton, the more I fear that she could, potentially, be more dangerous than even the dull-witted George Bush! Her close ‘relationship’ to right-wing Jewish establishment figures, like Haim Saban, her hawkish resume’ and, now, her seeming need to be tougher than the guys to win and govern make her likely to engage us in even more military action as President – possibly, even, in a war with Iran.

    She must be stopped!

  23. traintosiberia on January 24, 2016, 8:58 pm

American have a moral and legal responsibility to answer the shrill war mantra of the opportunists like Sullivan or Clinton. It doesn’t wash that this is all political posturings and not meant to be seriously debated . Neither the pious platitudes that US and Israel are one undivided entity joined in fight against Islam would make it Kosher .
American need to understand that power and prerogative come with responsibility . By repeatedly failing todo what the electorates are supposed to do they become the willing executioner of the State of Israel.

  24. Kay24 on January 24, 2016, 10:55 pm

You know that Netanyahu has no intention of giving the Palestinians their freedom and lands back when he answers to Zakaria’s question of what he wants his legacy to be, that he wants to be known as the “protector” of Israel. No talk of peace for any people, no showing openness to peace talks, cooperation with other nations in trying to achieve peace. He is a despicable war monger, who kills civilians without hesitation, steal without shame, and has no intention of making peace. It seem the world pretends to be fooled.
