Netanyahu says Israeli snipers are doing ‘holy work’

on 43 Comments

Days after an Israeli human rights group urged soldiers to refuse orders to shoot at Palestinian protesters in the Gaza Strip along the fence that divides the occupied territory from Israel, a group of left-wing Israeli activists approached soldiers stationed along the border and called them “terrorist.”

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday responded by defending the military for their “holy work,” and accused the activists of “outrageous absurdity.”

Netanyahu told his cabinet, “I see the outrageous absurdity that people are going up to IDF soldiers, who are defending them from annihilation, and are calling them terrorists.”

“They attack the IDF soldiers who act to thwart this destruction. There can be no greater absurdity. I think that every day, but especially today, we are all aware of the great contribution that the soldiers of the IDF make to the security and future of Israel,” he continued.

Netanyahu added that Israeli soldiers “need to do their holy work,” and referred to the Palestinian protesters as “terrorist.”

Hours later Netanyahu’s spokes person Ofir Gendelman commented on social media that Israeli soldiers are carrying out a “holy mission of defending Israel.”

The prime minister is not the first to accuse demonstrators in Gaza of having ties to terrorism.

The Israeli military has alleged the demonstrations are “riots” and charged that Palestinians carry firearms. However, protest organizers have said the crowds are non-violent. While Palestinians have burned tires during the confrontations and thrown stones towards the fence, media outlets reporting on the ground have also observed that there are no guns among the tens of thousand of protesters.

During the last day of marches on Friday, Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian journalist, Yaser Murtaja, who had recently received a grant of more than $10,000 from the State Department. In the aftermath of his killing Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman stated Murtaja had ties to Hamas. Israeli media criticized the Liberman’s labeling as baseless.

Organizers of the Great March of Return have called for weekly Friday protests over a six-week period, culminating mid-May. During the last two weeks of protests near the fence Israeli forces killed 30 Palestinians and injured more than 2,860, according to Gaza’s ministry of health.

**Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement as an apparent response to a campaign organized by the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem. The statement Netanyahu made was directed towards activists who harassed Israeli soldiers along the border with Gaza. Updated, April 13, 2018, 2p.m.

Given the on-going Zionist crusade to “reclaim” the “Land of Israel”, I suppose it makes sense that the IDF is doing “holy work” for their religion-supremacist “Jewish State”.

        @Jack Green

Israel’s 1980 annexation of East Jerusalem was rejected by the UN Security Council in Resolution 476 (June 30, 1980): “all legislative and administrative measures and actions taken by Israel, the Occupying Power, which purport to alter the character and status of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal validity and constitute a flagrant violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.”

On 17 December 1981, the UNSC unanimously passed Resolution 497, which declared Israel’s 14 December 1981 annexation of Syria’s Golan Heights “null and void.”

    • JWalters on April 12, 2018, 10:47 pm

Since the Israelis can’t burn them on an alter, shooting them in the back will have to suffice.

“I frequently ask myself how a historian in 50 or 100 years will interpret our period. When, he will ask, did people in Israel start to realize that the state that was established in the War of Independence, on the ruins of European Jewry and at the cost of the blood of combatants some of whom were Holocaust survivors, had devolved into a true monstrosity for its non-Jewish inhabitants. When did some Israelis understand that their cruelty and ability to bully others, Palestinians or Africans, began eroding the moral legitimacy of their existence as a sovereign entity?”

Our regular Zionists have exhausted themselves, the ‘reserves’ have been called up, some after an absence of a year.

Yeah, you gots hand it to ’em. Quiescent for months, more, but a chance to defend Israel’s shooting of unarmed protesters brings them right to the fore. They know that one or two extra comments will turn the tide, and let the world see the “holiness” of this work.

“patently” = glaringly, murderously, psychopathically (zero empathy over decades), approved at the highest levels (over decades), mindlessly, unprosecuted ever, routinely, remorselessly… Idk, I probably missed a few dozen.

B’Tselem is a remarkably courageous and consistent org. No “but.” I think this is their way of saying “heinous” without using the word “heinous” (or similar). Not sure what the restriction is on word selection given the level of unrepentant depravity exhibited by Israel on Good Friday – and REPEATED a week later. Again, not a criticism nor a suggested incongruity.

    Thanks B’Tselem.

      • John O on April 13, 2018, 3:40 am

Maybe you should ask some of these guys:

We, a group of former combatants who were members of sniper teams, seek to express our feelings of distress regarding the recent incidents in the Gaza Strip. As we hear about military orders permitting snipers to fire live ammunition at unarmed demonstrators, we are filled with shame and sorrow: shame at the orders devoid of moral and ethical judgment, and sorrow for the young soldiers, whom, as we know very well from our own experience, will always carry with them the scenes that they witnessed through the sights of their rifles.

Instructing snipers to shoot to kill unarmed demonstrators who pose no danger to human life is another product of the occupation and military rule over millions of Palestinian people, as well as of our country’s callous leadership, and derailed moral path.

Harming innocent people in Gaza is part of what is needed to maintain the regime of occupation, and we must not allow it to continue. Only ceasing to militarily control the Palestinian people will bring this to an end.

You’re absolutely right: The indigenous Palestinians of geographic Palestine haven’t done nearly enough to keep Zionist foreigners from invading, ethnically cleansing, militarily occupying and colonizing geographic Palestine and setting up in as much as possible of it a religion-supremacist state primarily for themselves and for other foreigners who choose to share the same religion-based identity.

President Donald J. Trump Proclaims April 12 through April 19, 2018, as the Days of Remembrance of Victims of the Holocaust

    Law & Justice

    Issued on: April 11, 2018

On Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, and during this week of remembrance, we reflect on one of the darkest periods in the history of the world and honor the victims of Nazi persecution. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, when the imprisoned Polish Jews mounted a courageous and extraordinary act of armed resistance against their Nazi guards.

The Holocaust, known in Hebrew as “Shoah,” was the culmination of the Nazi regime’s “Final Solution to the Jewish Question,” an attempt to eradicate the Jewish population in Europe. Although spearheaded by one individual, this undertaking could not have happened without the participation of many others who recruited, persuaded, and coerced in their efforts to incite the worst of human nature and carry out the ugliest of depravity. The abject brutality of the Nazi regime, coupled with the failure of Western leaders to confront the Nazis early on, created an environment that encouraged and enflamed anti-Semitic sentiment and drove people to engage in depraved, dehumanizing conduct.

By the end, the Nazis and their conspirators had murdered 6 million men, women, and children, simply because they were Jews. They also persecuted and murdered millions of other Europeans, including Roma and Sinti Gypsies, persons with mental and physical disabilities, Slavs and other minorities, Christians, Jehovah’s Witnesses, gays, and political dissidents.

Let us continue to come together to remember all the innocent lives lost in the Holocaust, pay tribute to those intrepid individuals who resisted the Nazis in the Warsaw Ghetto, and recall those selfless heroes who risked their lives in order to help or save those of their persecuted neighbors. Their bravery inspires us to embrace all that is good about hope and resilience; their altruism reminds us of the importance of maintaining peace and unity, and of our civic duty never to remain silent or indifferent in the face of evil. We have a responsibility to convey the lessons of the Holocaust to future generations, and together as Americans, we have a moral obligation to combat antisemitism, confront hate, and prevent genocide. We must ensure that the history of the Holocaust remains forever relevant and that no people suffer these tragedies ever again.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby ask the people of the United States to observe the Days of Remembrance of Victims of the Holocaust, April 12 through April 19, 2018, and the solemn anniversary of the liberation of Nazi death camps, with appropriate study, prayers and commemoration, and to honor the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution by internalizing the lessons of this atrocity so that it is never repeated.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eleventh day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand eighteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-second.

Okkkkaaaayyyyyy – maybe this came up in boobie’s and tRUMP’s convo – a day of remembrance isn’t enough! Let’s make it a week! Although have a feeling that boobie might not particularly like the sentence that includes the slaughter of non-jews. Can’t have every damn thing boobie! Console yourself with the soft-spoken words floating like pink champagne bubbles from your dear wife, or someone else’s wife, who cares! Snuggle into someone’s bosom and motor boat yer blues away.

Funny that April is the month of another holocaust from more recent history (so much for never again), but I have serious doubts that tRUMP would ever acknowledge the genocide of the Tutsi in Rwanda, April 1994. His job, per boobie’s directive I imagine, is to keep the nazi holocaust on the front burner, and the genocide the ‘state of israel’ has been perpetrating for over 70 years never get press.

Michael Moore has been tweeting about Palestine too. People should stop tweeting and start screaming. END THE OCCUPATION – FREE PALESTINE

    • Keith on April 13, 2018, 10:33 am

MARNIE- “Okkkkaaaayyyyyy – maybe this came up in boobie’s and tRUMP’s convo – a day of remembrance isn’t enough! Let’s make it a week!”

Trump is a jerk, however, the 8 day period was established by Congress a while back.

“The Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust (DRVH) is an annual 8-day period designated by the United States Congress for civic commemorations and special educational programs that help citizens remember and draw lessons from the Holocaust. The annual DRVH period normally begins on the Sunday before the Jewish observance of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, and continues through the following Sunday, usually in April or May. A National Civic Commemoration is held in Washington, D.C., with state, city, and local ceremonies and programs held in most of the fifty states, and on U.S. military ships and stations around the world. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum designates a theme for each year’s programs, and provides materials to help support remembrance efforts.

A House Joint resolution 1014 designated April 28 and 29 of 1979 as “Days of Remembrance of Victims of the Holocaust.” Senator John Danforth of Missouri, had originated the resolution, chose April 28 and 29, because it was on these dates, in 1945, that American troops — including at least one ethnically segregated artillery battalion of the U.S. Army, many of whose own relatives were themselves interned during the war on American soil — liberated the Dachau concentration camp and a number of its satellite camps, as well as rescuing hundreds of Jewish-ethnicity camp inmates driven southwards from Dachau by the Nazis on a death march only days later.

In 2005, the United Nations established a different date for International Holocaust Remembrance Day,[1] Jan. 27 — the day in 1945 when the Soviet Red Army liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp — but the Yom HaShoah date of Nisan 27 on the Hebrew calendar continues as the date for the determination of the 8-day DRVH commemoration. This date also links the DRVH to the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943.[2]” (Wikipedia)

      • Marnie on April 14, 2018, 2:33 am

Keith, I didn’t know this. tRUMP makes proclamations as if they were his own idea. Like with this gem – “NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J.
