Palestinian Christians support World Council of Churches’ Rev. Frank Chikane

Palestinian Christian organizations write a letter of support of South African Reverend Frank Chikane who has come under attack from Zionist organizations for his support of Palestinian human rights.

Editor’s Note: The following statement was issued on March 4, 2021 by Kairos Palestine, Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center, Christ at the Checkpoint, East Jerusalem YMCA, YWCA of Palestine, The Joint Advocacy Initiative, and the Director and the Producer of The People’s Patriarch. Mondoweiss occasionally publishes press releases and statements from organizations in an effort to draw attention to overlooked issues.

Blessed are the peacemakers. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me: Mathew 5: 9-11

We give thanks for and come alongside our Christian brother, Frank Chikane, who suffered many years for his courageous anti-apartheid work in South Africa. Now, our friend is unjustly criticized for his solidarity with Palestinians suffering under the apartheid state of Israel.

Rev. Chikane has been the target of a vicious smear campaign that leveled the charge of anti-semitism, a false attack familiar to Palestinians and those around the world who speak out against the racist laws and practices of Israel and value the dignity and human rights of Palestinians.

Rev. Chicane had shared his praise for the film, The People’s Patriarch. The film celebrates the life of retired Patriarch Emeritus Michel Sabbah, a defender of human rights and a steadfast advocate of nonviolent resistance to Israel’s illegal occupation. Rev. Chicane referenced the text of a Hebrew prophet who spoke on God’s behalf to insist that God would hold a people accountable for their actions. Rev. Chicane’s statement was taken out of context and misrepresented as a violent threat against Jews.

The original charge—amplified by pro-Israel media—was made by the spokesperson for a Christian Zionist organization, the purposes of which organization are to offer unquestioned support for the Israeli project of to vilify the character and motives of any who seek a just end to Israel’s occupation. Many of us have been the subject of this person’s false accusations and distortions of our positions.

In an interview on the South African network, Salaamedia, Rev. Chicane responded to the charges—an opportunity he was not given by his accuser. We were not surprised to hear his insistence that ours is not a tribal God, but one who loves all people, that “through Jesus the wall of separation has come down.” In criticizing Christian Zionism, Rev. Chicane joined us by insisting that it justifies one side against another, “turning God into a tribal God.”

We admire Rev. Chikane who will not be moved by unjust criticism. And we join him when, in the interview, he said, “This is where I stand. No amount of theology, no amount of justification of biblical texts will make me believe that our God will support the disregard of the existence of people on earth who are made in God’s image.”

As expressed in A Moment of Truth, the Kairos Palestine document inspired by the witness of our South African siblings,

We believe in God, good and just. We believe that God’s goodness will finally triumph over the evil of hate and of death that still persist in our land. We will see here “a new land” and “a new human being”, capable of rising up in the spirit to love each one of his or her brothers and sisters.

South Africa’s top judge in breach of judicial code, and ordered to apologise within 10 days – Africa4Palestine
#Africa4Palestine:
PRESS STATEMENT: South Africa’s top judge found in breach of judicial code, and ordered to apologize within 10 days
04 March 2021
“The human rights & Palestine solidarity organisation, #Africa4Palestine welcomes today’s decision by South Africa’s Judicial Services Commission (JSC) that has found South Africa’s Chief Justice, Judge Mogoeng Mogoeng, in contravention of the Code of Judicial Conduct, for his pro-Israel comments made last year in June.
“According to the JSC’s precedent-setting decision, Chief Justice Mogoeng is to, within ten (10) days, read out an apology & retraction ‘at a meeting of serving Justices of the Constitutional Court & release a copy thereof under his signature to the OCJ & to the media in the normal manner in which the Constitutional Court & the OCJ issue media releases.’
“In the comprehensive 67-page decision, paragraph 243.2 outlines the wording of the apology & retraction that the Chief Justice is to issue:

“I, Mogoeng Mogoeng, Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, hereby apologise unconditionally for becoming involved in political controversy through my utterances in the online seminar (webinar) hosted by The Jerusalem Post on 23 June 2020, in which I participated.

“I further hereby unreservedly retract & withdraw the following statement which I uttered subsequent thereto or other words to the same effect: “I stand by my refusal to retract or apologize for any part of what I said during the webinar. Even if 50 million people were to march every day for 10 years for me to do so, I would not apologize. If I perish, I perish.”

“I reaffirm my recognition for the statutory authority of the Judicial Conduct Committee of the Judicial Service Commission established in terms of Part 11 of the JSC Act 9 of 1994 to decide on any complaint of alleged judicial misconduct against me & all judges in the Republic of South Africa.” Click here for the full JSC decision.  (cont’d)

“Today’s decision comes after a complaint was lodged by #Africa4Palestine on the 4th of July 2020 with the JSC. Deputy Judge President, Judge Phineas Mojapelo, was tasked with lead the process.

“Today is a good day for the Palestinian cause but also for South Africa and our judiciary. Today’s JSC decision affirms that no one is above the law and we hope that it sets the standard for future judicial conduct.

“#Africa4Palestine thanks our stellar legal team led by Advocate Ben Winks, Advocate Sheldon Magardie, Attorney Yasin Bham as well as a Senior Counsel Member from the Johannesburg Bar. We also thank the Womens Cultural Group that submitted a crucial affidavit in support of the complaint against Mogoeng.
ISSUED BY TISETSO MAGAMA ON BEHALF OF #AFRICA4PALESTINE

Mr. Chikane was alluding to passages in Ezekiel, such as 3:18, where the distinctive phrase ‘his blood will I require at your hand’ is used. Chikane is talking about European Christians who care nothing for Palestine in the face of Israeli oppression. Ezekiel means that God may take the life of an evildoer but will ‘require the blood’ = inflict some unspecified punishment on ‘good’ people who did not reprove the evildoer while there was time. Ezekiel’s thought, if applied strictly, would mean that God will punish Israelis, perhaps mortally, and then also punish the say-nothing Christians because they failed the Israelis in their hour of moral need. This would absolutely not be a call for violence against Israel, only for good advice.
Chikane actually modifies the message by making it Palestinian, not Israeli, blood which will be required at Christian hands. This slightly spoils Ezekiel’s line of thought but makes it even less of a threat to Israel or to Israeli blood, no longer even indirectly mentioned.
The World Council of Churches finds this sort of thing far too much to explain and rather distances itself from Chikane’s remarks. Chikane is very much a moderate and a two-stater. His Church, the Apostolic Faith Mission (of American Pentecostal origin) does not support BDS, which I believe the Anglican Church in SA does. There may be social pressures on him slightly like those on Richard Goldstone.
