Israel’s ‘Operation Breaking Dawn’ killed 49 Palestinians. These are their stories.

49 Palestinians, including 17 children, were killed during the three-day Israeli assault on Gaza from August 5 – 7, 2022. Here is a profile of each life that was lost.

During the three-day Israeli assault on Gaza between August 5 – 7, 2022, now known as Operation Breaking Dawn, 49 Palestinians were killed, including 17 children. Since the end of fighting, the Mondoweiss team identified every airstrike conducted by the Israeli air forces and undertook the project of memorializing the Palestinians who were martyred in the Israeli attack, including interviewing many of their families.

While Israeli airstrikes were still ongoing in Gaza, moving from place to place became a deadly mission, and even venturing outside of your home could expose you to deliberate and indiscriminate Israeli bombing. The Israeli military regarded anything that moved on the ground to be a legitimate target, and many of the deaths reported during this invasion were of people sitting in front of their homes — most of them non-combatants, according to Mondoweiss’s documentation.

This latest round has led many in Gaza to conclude that “there is no such thing as security when you’re living under occupation in Gaza,” according to Saleh Tahrawi, the father of a 30-year-old martyr killed in the recent airstrikes. “Whether you’re sheltering in your home hoping to survive the war, or fighting Israel on the front lines, you’re going to be killed either way. Homes in Gaza are more dangerous than battlefields.” Tahrawi lost his daughter while she was sheltering in place in her home.

The following is a profile of each person killed during the offensive. Those killed have been listed to correspond with the day and time they were killed, and location of the airstrike that killed them.

On Friday afternoon, the Israeli air force launched its offensive on Gaza, conducting several simultaneous airstrikes across the strip. The Israeli military claimed these strikes were targeting leaders and military targets of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement (PIJ). Most of the known PIJ fighters and leaders that were killed in the first airstrikes on Friday afternoon were not engaged in combat when they were struck, unaware of the airstrikes about to target their homes or the residential areas where they were located. As a result, many of those killed on Friday were non-combatants, including several children.

Location of airstrike: Al-Shuja’iyya neighborhood, east of Gaza City, near the Shuhada Al-Shuja’iyya Mosque.

Nathmi had also replied: “you will go and leave me alone? If we’re going to die, I’m going with you.”

The Israeli airstrike killed them all.

Location of airstrike: Gaza City, Omar al-Mokhtar Street

Time (approximate): 3:30-4:00 p.m.

Death Toll: 4

41. Mahmoud Ahmad Dawoud, 21 years old

Mahmoud Ahmad Dawoud

Mahmoud was a traffic policeman, and was on duty when an Israeli airstrike targeted the street he was working on, killing him and three others.

His family was preparing a new apartment for him in their home, with the hopes that he would get married and start his own family soon.

“I taught my son the noble morals that were given to us by Allah, and he was beloved to everyone,” his father said.

“Every time I walked out of my home, people stopped me to tell me how kind and beloved man my son is, people who I didn’t even know.”

Mahmoud is one of 10 family members, and used to sell sweets on the street before becoming a government employee two years ago. His family said that Mahmoud always encouraged his colleagues to be empathetic with people’s conditions, and to avoid handing out hefty traffic fines. He even used to pay for people’s tickets on their behalf if they couldn’t afford it.

After he was killed, people came to tell his family that just moments before the airstrike, he was urging drivers and pedestrians to go home to stay out of harm’s way.

Shadi was a husband and father of two kids. He had recently purchased a horse and wagon which he used to go around Gaza City to sell different goods in the hopes to secure a good income for his family.

He was riding his horse and carriage on Omar al-Mokhtar street when the airstrike hit, killing him.

“He went out to get us food, but he came back to us in his coffin,” his wife, Asmaa, 25, told Mondoweiss.

44. Khalid Ayman Yassin, 27 years old

Khalid Ayman Yassin

Khalid was one of 11 family members, and worked with his five brothers as street sweepers, often collecting plastic to sell for some change to the recycling units in the plastic factories in Gaza, which they did to help get food for their family.

Khalid was humble, and because of his family’s poor economic situation, put off getting married in order not to put economic strain on the family. As a surprise, his father scraped together enough money to buy him a new bedroom set.

“When I told him that you should get married now, and I showed him the room, he said that this is too much for him. He was very humble and simple,” his father Ayman recalled. “Khalid kept opening and closing the closet in disbelief. Now I am sleeping in his room, waiting for him to return.” Tears were streaming down his face.

Ayman also lost another son, Ismael, 22, in Israel’s offensive on Gaza in 2009.

At the front of his home, Yasser had a garden where he used to sit with his family under the trees, and would tend to the garden and water the plants with care.

The home is located east of Al-Bureij Refugee Camp, close to the borders.

On Sunday, Yasser decided to go sit in his garden, and received one relative visiting from the house next door. After the guest left, Yasser started watering the trees with his sons. The airstrike targeted them all.

Yasser is a husband and a father of 8. Half of the children, two girls and two boys, survived because they were inside the house, but one of them was injured.

Muhammad: Muhammad had big dreams of becoming a traveling merchant — to go outside of Gaza and bring back new exciting things to trade. He always talked about growing up so he could work and achieve his dreams. In the summers he would make kites and sell them to the kids in the neighborhood.

“He had a kind, soft heart,” his older brother Bilal said.

Ahmad: Ahmad was the youngest boy among his siblings, and was described as being wise beyond his years.

“I always saw him as a little man, he was like a friend,” Bilal said, adding that Ahmad was always defending his older brother Muhammad when he was in trouble.

“Even though he was the youngest, he was tougher and braver than all the other brothers,” he said.

Dalia: Dalia had dreams of becoming a doctor, and the family used to call her “the doctor of the family” to encourage and support her to follow her dreams.

“She loved her family, and never complained,” Bilal said.

He described her as a smart girl who loved school. She was playing outside of the family’s home with her younger sister Rahma, 11, when an Israeli airstrike hit them. Fatima died instantly, and Rahma was critically injured.

“Rahma cries and screams every day asking about her sister. She says her sister isn’t dead, and she waits for her to come back home,” Ayed said.

Very nice tribute, MW.

Again..and again. What next?

So, so sad!

Thank you Tareq Hajjal!

glory to the martyrs of gaza

In 1171 the English King Henry 2nd invaded Ireland.English Rule and all it,s cruelty and murderous oppression followed shortly after and continued for over 700 years.During this long period of time many thousands of Irish heroes died at the hands of the greatest Criminal State the World has ever known.People were starved or thrown out of their homes and left to die on the roadsides.

However Irish people never cowered to the British invaders and kept reminding them they were not welcome by carrying out periodic uprisings and rebellions. The British used to call that Terrorism.Funny how land thieves and oppressors always blame their victims.

Finally in the late 1930,s the British invaders boarded their ships and headed back to whence they came —a defeated super state and that by a small nation not yet officially recognised by the UN.That would come in 1949.

So too will the lawless , borderless criminal Apartheid state of israel be defeated one day and they too will leave when they finally understand they have no future as unwanted invaders.

The Jon,s ,s of this world will grab their US passports and hightail it back to their rightful Historic Homelands and the Palestinians will finally have theirs again

The Zionist apologists will scoff at this suggestion but go ahead. It will be all the more satisfying to see them catching flights from so called BG airport while claiming they are the victims of Antisemitism.
