After 6 years at a catholic boarding school i could say i know them all.i stopped going to unzreview because i was offended by giraldi.you and ron unz have him in common.there is something to be said about that.

  • Ibrahim 'the half bodied,' an icon of Gaza skirmishes, loses his other half for Jerusalem
    • Hi annie says....."murdered him"

      Well i see it differently.
regardless of who pulled the trigger he made a decision to martyr himself before the un vote.his story was immediately picked up by the usual media suspects and milked for all its worth.i call it

      Fake international news enabling....FINE

More importantly it demonstrates the despair that is evident in this protacted conflict and the lengths leaders are prepared to go to draw attention to there causes.what is disappointing is the inability of hamas and fatah to agree on a path towards peace.it is interesting that ibrahim lost his one leg in fighting between fatah and hamas.
To me this sums up the situation well

1.the strategy behind the palestinian leadership to keep up the pretense of reconciliation to scuttle any peace deal with israel is a grave mistake.it is national suicide handed to them on a plate

2.time is running out for the arab people.turkey is in the process of taking over water resources in syria and iraq and as global warming progresses the middle east will become less inhabitable.the same for egypt and its out of control population growth.

3.national aspirations will be affected by population growth and finite water resources.the fact is that right of return is simply out of the question for both sides.

4.the palestinian leadership must take the deal trump is offering.stop wasting resources on intifada's.if i had the power to vouch for the jewish people i would say take the deal offered regardless.there will come a time when your people will be fairly rewarded.
do it now before the slow creep of nationalism returns to europe.

5.i support all countries to move there embassies to jerusalem.even if the idea does not truly reflect realities on the ground the possibilities of jerusalem becoming a spiritual light to the politics of the nations is a powerful incentive.
after all in israel unlike many other countries politicians are jailed for there crimes.

  • Neoconservatives may finally get their war with Iran, from Donald Trump
    • Harry ......iron dome is not a stand alone weapon but part of an offensive system.notice how israels missile capabilities are never presented.instead a war of attrition would seem the better option.

    • Annie.unfortunately you are wrong. oil blackmail is coming to an end.

  • The world's anger toward Trump gives Palestinians a clear path for action
    • Maga
i just finished reading the bull shem tov and it says antisemitism was worse before the state of Israel was founded.
      What do i do now?
And why is the 22 the december 2017 important.happy birthday baby.thunder and lightning .and what does MAGA stand for .... make arabs great again.....all this and more in the bull shem tov

    • Maga says...
.the difference between south africa and israel is that the west found the democratic alternative acceptable in south africa.it suited western countries to have access to south africa's resources.

What democratic alternative will work in israel.?

H.E the author who lives in gaza said a democratic alternative must be applied.instead of waffling on about bds and south africa ......what democratic alternative is there

    • H.E

Anyway.read the book...salafi-jihadism.the history of an idea by shiraz maher.. published by pengiun
or maybe page 199.to start this discussion.

    •  H.E says

"to get rid of the racist two state solution, renounce the Oslo Accords, and come up with a democratic alternative"

  • A majority of one is pushing for embassy move -- Sheldon Adelson
    • I was wondering why everyone who comments here is against the move.at least admit that the jerusalem is important to relegion.because it is.it has the potential to be a truly spiritual place.important to many relegions.needs a renovation.decent sewerage treatment.river needs to be sorted.cleaned up.greater jerusalem municipality needs to get the roads paved.the low cost housing could do with a abu dis and dat.it has great tourist potential too and the light rail has helped.
I hope the russians and chinese along with the usa and uk and the eu countries will move there embassies to.
Israel needs a chance to turn weapons into plough shares.so all its citizens prosper.
Next year in Jerusalem.see you there

  • US embassy move to Jerusalem would spark 'fanaticism and violence' and end US status as negotiator -- Arab leaders
    • Emory

No one knows exactly what the deal is so let us not speculate.trump and his people are keeping everyone guessing as to the details which is no different from any important business deal.i am positive that both sides will have to compromise which is expected.

  • Israel will get 'more understanding' from Trump's negotiators because they're all observant Jews, Sharansky says
    • Hi kay 24 says....jerusalem capital of israel.

Yes it is good news indeed but the nut is in the details

This is but one step on the road to jerusalem becoming a unified city and a place of worship reserved for the 3 companions of the abrahamic relegion.

  • Forget pinkwashing, it's brownwashing time: self-Orientalizing on the US campus
    • Annie i have read the link and as i said before it is not perfect but if you compare south tel aviv to say areas in the usa or even france or belgium then one could come to a different conclusion.

    • What i find interesting is how much easier it is for israeli society to intergrate people of colour.it is not perfect but generally speaking it works.it helps that relegion plays a role.

  • The left must give thanks to... Donald Trump
    • I took a bet that trump will build a trump hotel in damascus.
Thats is called a learning curve.
A green zone in baghdad versus a trump tower in damascus.
I read somewhere that bin laden knew exactly how bush would react after 911 and that same senario was hoped for in syria.did not happen.i believe that obama did the right thing and stayed away from damascus.took the right advice.
So instead of a clintonian slush puppy clinic, damascus might get a downtown trump plaza.
And i will won a ten dollar bet

  • A music lesson from Palestine, for Nick Cave
    • It is indeed tragic that they teach radic to kids but why would they need to teach something that is supposedly a reality in there everyday lives.i am sure that kids know exactly what the situation is....so why the textbook radic.do they really need to be reminded.
domestic violence causes more damage to children than any enemy army so perhaps it is the teachers and care givers that need to face up to there responsibilities and normalize a childs environment
Having said that israel needs to address the manner in which children are drawn to political violence and the way these children are dealt with.
Make no mistake both sides are to blame when a young child is encouraged to commit acts of terror.

I attended a lecture some time ago on water resources in israel and the picture was bleak.there is no way that israel can support 15 million people and upwards.just not going to happen.
Even if israel wanted to expand into the west bank and increase the settler population it would face severe water shortages .major political decisions are based on facts on the ground

any political maneuvers by the russians in america are mostly aimed at jewish power, not american interests.
trump and putin in this time and space,in this moment, could bring about a just solution for the i/p conflict.

  • 'American Jews are losing it bigtime' -- Netanyahu gov't official slams '80 percent' assimilation rate
    • james

your statement tells me you fully fail to understand relegious jews of the chabad variety.they see there fellow jews who marry out as breaking a fundimental law of orthodox judaism as i define it and a lost cause.they can only redeem themselves with walmart coupons
the threat that Netanyahu refers to is the problem of losing american support due to american jews being indifferent to israels security threats.

    • eljay....perhaps i should make myself clearer.as defined

      assimilation

      əsɪmɪˈleɪʃ(ə)n/

      noun

      1.

the process of taking in and fully understanding information or ideas.

1.i believe it is a mistake to abandon judaism due to the i/p conflict.
2.taking on new ideas, converting to judaism or another relegion is a learning process and leads to personal growth

but those jews who abandon judaism because of what is going on in israel are making a grave mistake.those who encourage jews to abandon judaism due to the i/p conflict, especially jews, are making a grave mistake

    • ossinev says ...."this to miss hotovely"

no..... jews in israel pay in blood for there belief.who am i to judge them.those jews that assimilate i encourage to let judaism go.
      3 words ....let it go.
but don't try and justify leaving judaism due to the i/p conflict.because sooner or later a solution will be found and people will move on as history has shown and judaism will still be practiced.
many rabbi's complain that jews in the usa are assimilating and leaving judaism.they say it is a disaster.i disagree.thousands of jewish names and family lines will be erased.only the faithful will remain.the true believers.
lift the torah scroll up high and a flame will burn.and the letter shin will be seen in the flames.

    • you know phil we probably will never meet but i have been reading your articles on and off for 7 years and i have to ask.do you really believe in the stuff you write about.is assimilation worth more than 3 words.does it really matter.
fact is judaism is fast reaching a point where every person is free to choose.there is no social pressure.no stigma.no forced dogma.
      let it go

  • A Jewish atonement for Zionism
    • talkback says.....nobody

you be surprised in this day and age anything is possible....no matter how hard you try you cannot rationally explain the founding of israel after the bar kokhba nabka

      Date132–136 CE
(Fall of Betar falls traditionally on Tisha B'Av of 135)LocationJudea ProvinceResult

      Decisive Roman victory:

An all-out defeat of Judean rebels
Large-scale destruction of Judean population by Roman troops
Suppression of Jewish religious and political autonomy by Hadrian
      Jews banned from Jerusalem

no one in there right mind could have believed that israel would be founded in 1948 after 1000 years.and here we a certain yoav wanting atonement for zionism.

      unbelievable

    • one finger typing on a mobile phone screen calls for special farces operations.there is no time for things like punctuation.to make it easy for you all to understand i did include a link.this selective critique of zionism that does nt consider the big picture of European nationalism and imperial mints in the middle east forgets that the nazis and arabs joined forces to oppose britain and france at a particular point in zionisms history.
it is only after watching the film "von ryans express" did i fully grasp this pertinent petticoat point

balanced against this was the film "midnight express" which underlined western forces opposing turkish ottaman empire nationalism and the lifting of the yoke of the sykes apricot agreement.one only need to look at the proper gander of the day to see where the rotten egg lay.

      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Von_Ryan%27s_Express

      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnight_Express_(film)

      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_nationalism

"During the war, Britain had been a major sponsor of Arab nationalist thought and ideology, primarily as a weapon to use against the power of the Ottoman Empire. Although the Arab forces were promised a state that included much of the Arabian Peninsula and the Fertile Crescent the secret Sykes-Picot Agreement between Britain and France provided for the territorial division of much of that region between the two imperial powers. During the inter-war years and the British Mandate period, when Arab lands were under French and British control, Arab nationalism became an important anti-imperial opposition movement against European rule."

    •  “this propaganda piece” (propaganda for what?)"

well whats good for the goose is proper for the gander

zionism is a direct response to the rise of nationalism in europe and the middle east.it is no coincidence that israel is situated between the borders of islam and christianity.unfortunately some are blind to the role israel plays in keeping these 2 powerful forces from attacking each other.the past battles for jerusalem are a good example of what can happen.
rolling out the 3 blind mice who ran to come up with ......atoning for zionism is not proper gander.it is just plain ignorance

  • A plea to Israel: Don't start the third Lebanon War
    • what happened to the other mooser.the ellipses get him ?
you would nt know if your asshat had been popped or riveted

    • syria and Lebanon have no western forces and no populations to hold ransom.unlike israel.any attack on israel will have to take into consideration arab population centres and therein lies the deterrent.the 2006 war in lebanon exposed this weakness of hezbollah unable to defend its homefront.the same goes for syria.
the only way syria and hezbollah can overcome this is the seizing of the jewish population in the north as ransom for a negioated surrender.i have no doubt that hezbollah and syria have planned for this pincer maneuver.winter will be the optimum time as forces on the golan will find it harder to maneuver and the weather could restrict airstrikes.
therefore direct missile strikes on Lebanese and syrian cities will be neccesary as well as the immediate evacuation of the north.
this stalemate does not bode well for southern lebanon and any miscalculation by lebanese forces will result in permanent loss of land south of the litani.
one of the major driving forces will be water resources and 2017 has seen lower than normal levels.
a dam on the lower levels of mt hermon north of the village of Hader in the demilitarized zone is a possibility.

  • High holidays? Meh
    • there was a time in my life when high holidays had a cheech and chong feel to it.lately i binge watched "american gods" having previously read the book and many truths about relegion were expressed.
in australia there is a yes/no debate about same sex marriage and i heard people bolster there choices with references to the bible.others who choose yes talk about human rights
myself i came up with the "laws of nature" defence.the queens cannot hang out together on the board because nature says only the king and queen can make a pawn.
      but back to "american gods"
one relegion has been ditched for another since adam and eve.jews might be turning there back on judaism as phil says but it has nothing to do with israel.
i personallly believe that the internet has a lot to do with it.sources of knowledge have always been respected.and relegion had played a large role.
these days that same knowledge is freely available and commitment free.just need an internet connection to worship.and there is no shortage of gods to follow on twitter and instagram.
they say the american bible belt has replaced jesus with donald trump.every tweet a blessing.
a small problem is the "fake news" thing but hey .....every relegion has used a bit of the old "magical dust" to put a shine on the moon.
this year i too lacked my usual enthusiasm for rosh h. but went for a few hours anyway to hear the shofar.
i grew increasingly bored.the drone my man the drone.
standing next to me was a guy from the ussr.we started chatting.he started telling me about his parents and what it was like for jews in russia under stalin.he said that there shul was underground in someones cellar.i thought he was joking.imagine a shul in a cellar.jews were not allowed to worship openly he said.
eventually they got out and many russians went to israel where jews could end up going to shul in underground bunkers.ironic like a tonic.
this year i am seriously considering not fasting.i never used to.fuck it why should i do something that has no meaning for me.however i do worry that God will kick my ass.
did you know that a commandment states that you shall put a sign upon your door post.the sages said it has to be a mezzuzah with a scroll in it containing a few paragraphs.i believe that the commandment is open to interpretation and put a drawing of the universe and its connectedness on my doorpost.some people hang lucky charms.asian people put many sided mirror things.many people have nothing at there doorpost.just a door bell.
one day God will ring your door bell phil.he always does

i learnt two important lessons today.this weeks parsha mentioned the law of a soldier paying a half shekel as a ransom before he goes into battle.the other was that the ego is the source of fear and hate.

  • 'Auto-anti-Semitism!' Naftali Bennett declares war on Jewish self-hatred in Israel
    • you are mistaken

zionism is the only answer to irrational acts like anti semitism and jew hatred.hitler and his supporters considered themselves invincible.murdering unarmed jews was an easy matter but that all changed on the russian front.i might not support israeli policies towards arabs in the west bank but without zionism jews would be facing constsnt attacks.
the idea that left wing policies can somehow make the world a better place for all people falls short in times of economic collapse when the strong whether left or right dominates the weak..

  • The United State of Israel and Palestine
    • The idea of a one state is good but the present reality is this.why should arabs accept anything less than the complete withdrawal of most of the jews from Israel.bds is growing stronger and full sanctions are ahead.most of the world's oil comes from Arab countries so they have leverage over the west.the un is dominated by the arab block.anti semitism is on the rise worldwide.

  • Trump support for racists forces Israeli leaders to take sides, but which side will they choose?
    • 23,24,25.

    • I love a good conspiracy.bannon called the neo nazis a bunch of clowns.i think that they are more likely a bunch of canaries in a coal mine.forget about zionist exceptionalism.how about white exceptionalism.

Most of the protesters on both sides were white.this is a fight about which direction whites should take.fact is american demographics speak for themselves.over 50% of american cities have majority hispanic populations.

Most interesting of all though is the slogan "jews will not replace us"

So the alt left or the jews or the Democrats are now opposing the alt right the neo nazis or the Republicans or the christians.

Sounds like someone is trying to create artifical opposing sides for a greater purpose.the obvious target is the israel supporting christian right.they are being vilified.that is why Netanyahu is pondering the ponder.clever move by bannon .and a dangerous gamble.

  • Trump response to Charlottesville sugarcoats a rotten morality

The truth and reconciliation commision in south africa was a sucess on some levels because both sides agreed to take responsibility for there crimes.note that the level of violence both sides committed against each other never reached anywhere near the level as that of the i/p conflict.
Bear in mind that your claims of ethnic cleansing are a lie.the arab population in israel and the west bank and the the diaspora have never stopped expanding and is out growing the jewish population.

      Here is an appropriate definition.

Gregory Stanton, the founder of Genocide Watch, has criticised the rise of the term and its use for events that he feels should be called "genocide": as "ethnic cleansing" has no legal definition, its media use can detract attention from events that should be prosecuted as genocide.[36][37] Because of widespread acceptance after media influence, it has become a term used legally, but carries no legal repercussions as there is no legal definition.

In 1992, the German equivalent of ethnic cleansing" (German: Ethnische Säuberung) was named German Un-Word of the Year by the Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache due to its euphemistic, inappropriate nature.[38]

    • I agree one hundred percent with the ckompsky analysis.times have changed and israel has changed from those were the days my friend.
But so have the arabs and are they any better than the Israelis.this point seems to be lost on the author.
If you are going to judge then you must judge both sides equally
That is the problem.israel withdrew from gaza and what followed surely is not only the fault of the israeli side.
Zionism and political islam are one and the same beast.
Bds is war by other means and will be countered in the same manner.
Time is on israels side as technology begins to change the balance of power.that is what chompsky was referring to when he suggested nuclear power opposing bds.
How can you possibly believe that the arab side is more moral.the suicide bombing campaigns of the 2000's is no different to the bombing of gaza.
      Judge one judge all

  • After Israel tries to ban Al Jazeera, critics say the country is 'taking its cues from Arab dictators'
    • a deger says..........all jazz

a few buildings have caught on fire in Doha in qatar lately.and Arab gulf countries have broken off ties with qatar.
some say qatar is a state sponsor of "fighters" in Syria and Iraq.a spreader of incitement

qatar is also headquarters of al Jazeera

and mondoweiss is attacking Israel for banning al jazeera.

  • 'Pummeled' at town hall, Sen. Wyden says Israel Anti Boycott law is needed because 'movement has grown'
    • BDS puts both sides under the spotlight and given the Palestinian track record of murder and corruption I would say that anti BDS legislation draws much needed attention to Palestinian policies.a good example is paying the families of martyrs salaries.
this had now led to accusations of incitement by western countries who are calling for an end to this practice.
by shutting down qatari support and money from western donors BDS has become a double edged sword.

perhaps someone can explain this taylor act.quiet confusing for jubby

  • Zionism is apartheid, and worse
    • Yoni

There is definitely a lot of happiness going around and the consternation that the anti zionists display at the unhappiness index leads them to conclude that things need to be tweaked in order to return to that state of happiness after cast lead as in your case ,is admirable.

What i find really interesting is your own pursuit of happiness by seperating your inner psyche from the fray after the fact.
I went to israel in 1975 on birth right and remember thinking that the situation created there was one of overreach and that eventually a consolidation will be needed to achieve the so called happiness you speak of.

There is no denying the jewish connection to the land that is israel but in order for zionism to sustain judaism an equilibrium needs to be obtained.some sort of symbolic reality to help preserve and nuture the true essence of judaism which is to serve as an anchor to God and a way of life that uplifts the human condition.

On passover we have various foods that tell the tale of jewish nationalism and the land that is israel is spoken about.but what symbolic reality would satisfy our quest for equilibrium.
The land from sea to jordan.
The land based on the 67 line
      The land in west jerusalem
The land where the wailing wall stands
A small stone from the shores of the galilee
A grain of sand from the negev

What symbolic reality could the jews put on the passover plate to achieve that happiness.

  • 'I will not be bullied, intimidated threatened over my unshakeable support for Palestinian liberation' -- Linda Sarsour
    • A muslim poster girl for islam marching for womens rights in washington
A jewish lesbian marching for gay rights with a star of david on her gay rights flag in chicago

Here we have the famous new word "intersectionality" in all its glory

      Well sort off

Political islam has bought itself a place at the front of a womens march.at the expense of womens rights.intersectionality indeed.
These 2 examples illustrate quiet clearly there is no difference between zionism and political islam.and that there is no place for either in western society

  • Ensconced at New York Times, pro-Israel advocate Bari Weiss smears Sarsour as a 'hater'

This article written by bari weiss has an interesting warning at the end.......

"Jews on the left, particularly in recent years, have attempted to square this growing discomfort by becoming more anti-Israel. But if history has taught the Jews anything it’s that this kind of contortion never ends well."

The tale of the 2 weiss's perfectly sums up the challenges jews face in there relationship with judaism and israel.bear in mind that both come from different media places.bari from tablet magazine and phil from the kushner owned ny observer.draw your own conclusions.

  • As Israeli soldiers crushed Gaza, world Jewry united, and sent Ben & Jerry's ice cream to the front
  • 'Transferring' Palestinian citizens of Israel to a Palestinian state goes from outrage to Netanyahu policy
    • Land swap 1.
gaza for parts of westbank including population swaps.gas ,electricity, and water supply to westbank included in deal
      Land swap 2
Old city of jerusalem including temple mount and wall designated international relegious state accessible to all.like vatican
      Land swap 3.
Outside that area west jerusalem capital of israel, east jerusalem capital of palestinian state.
Non compliance will lead to total destruction of jerusalem by earthquake in the first quarter the 2018

  • Israel is losing the battle for public opinion thanks to honest journalists, and platforms like Mondoweiss
    • Ecchi says "all it takes is pen and paper"

The pen is mightier than the sword so right there you have a winner.lets face facts though.take the latest temple mount protests.
Some bright spark (probably) iranian has decided to stir up a few youths in israel for the sake of there strategic interests elsewhere such as the campaign in the qualmoun moutains.
Kill a few druze policemen, murder a jewish family, shoot a few palestinian youths and scores are settled for the attack in iran last month at the shrine and parliament.

Luckily some people are not fooled.political islam requires the sacrifice of common man to achieve its goals.
The problem is that the palestinian people have suffered the most and day will come that whatever victory the masters of war hope to achieve in jerusalem it will be a hollow one.history certainly proved that that is the case.
The next palestinian generation should forget about al aqsa this and aqsa that and take a lesson from what has happened in egypt since the arab spring.
It time for the Palestinian younger generation to throw the ramallah puppets out of office and take there destiny in there own hands and build a nation.
Not a state but a nation.

  • The challenges of being Palestinian in East Jerusalem
    • e block says..make jerusalem a jewish city

the turks ruled jerusalem for many years as part of the ottoman carpet era.since when has it ever been a Palestinian city.what point are you trying to make.jerusalem is part of israel.arabs live there but then so have the romans and greeks.
most people associate jerusalem with judaism.

when will president donald trump move the us embassy to jerusalem ?
when lightning strikes the earth to mark the cornerstone.
the deeds of december.the ides of march.
