    • One glaring fact about the Balfour Declaration is that many people who discuss it , leave out an important sentence which says "it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine". Cohen also leaves it out. This does more than anything else to make the Balfour Declaration into a holy Jewish text.

      I totally agree with Citizen's comments on this subject. I have read GA's book "The Wandering Who" and his articles; GA's analysis of Zionism etc is profound in my opinion. I find GA's conclusions very convincing and helpful to me in understanding the outrageous behavior of the Jewish lobby in the USA. I have never seen any criticism of GA's book that had any logical or factual basis. John Mearsheimer even praised this book although he was predictably called an antisemite by many Jewish pundits for his opinions. Thankfully this antisemitism canard has only devalued the concept and led to even more rational criticism of Zionism. The people on this site who call GA a "rabid dog" etc are merely apologists for the already tarnished irrationality that leads to selfish and criminal Zionist goals.

      Many Zionists help to further the myth that it will not help to criticize Israel. This is the last resort of these irrational thinkers in the goal of protecting Israel from criticism and perpetuating the colonization of all Palestine. Abrams is exactly the same. My theory is simple. If we cast enough blame then people will accept our condemnation and turn their backs on Israel forcing them to accept a just solution to the Palestinian issue.

      Phil, you finally said it. You have been making your way to this statement for several years. Congratulations.

      You also said "Americans have the ability to remove (is) our support for a militant Jewish ideology that few Arabs and Muslims have ever accepted. " This is indeed the elephant in the room, the emperor with no clothes. It does not account for the entire problem but it is highly significant.

      At least in these pages we are analyzing "the militant Jewish ideology" with unprecedented honesty and clarity, but this openness is still not found in the MSM. Similarly, the MSM does not allow us to ask the questions "Why did they attack us on 9/11?" or "Why did they attack Charlie Hebdo?" or "Why did ISIS attack Paris?" The MSM usually glosses over these answers with simple platitudes about our freedom and Western morals not being acceptable to Muslims. It is taboo to mention Israel in this context, except as another victim of Islam.

      The reason why the MSM avoids asking the questions above and fails to explore the causes and effects of Militant Jewish Ideology is because ultimately many Jews and others in the MSM realize that the answers will not reflect well upon the reputation of Israel, the integrity of her supporters, and the honesty of the MSM. But it is becoming abundantly clear that our national failure to analyze the elephant in the room (Israel) is causing us severe problems that are compounding daily.

      The problem of course is in essence that we are not defining the problems with us or with Islam that cause the pathology behind the war against us. In other words, who are we fighting, why are we fighting them, why do they hate us and how can we plan to heal this wound? We simply cannot get into detail about these issues without inciting the wrath of most Israelis and their supporters. Too many in the MSM are reluctant to expose themselves to this hostility, either because of personal bias or because of fear of the consequences. This lack of integrity is astounding and its existence is also suppressed.

Therefore, the Palestinians ideally would like the Israelis to go away and take their national and religious rights with them. It is that simple. But the Israelis are unlikely to go away and the current status quo must be dealt with. However, the Palestinians might accept the status quo of the late 1980s that Phil describes, if the settlement issues and land swaps are worked out fairly. The good thing is that we are getting around to saying this in public. Due to disinformation jockeys like Goldberg and the disproportionately Jewish media, the real issues are never hashed out. But this is changing right now in front of our eyes.

      The US government and our population believes that truth must be covered up at all costs, yet we parade around the world acting as if Washington is the white knight for 
“bringing freedom and democracy to the world.” Similarly, Israel covers up its vicious behavior towards the Palestinians and tries to convince the world that it is all the fault of the Palestinians who are refusing the colonizer's generous offers of thoughtful coexistence. When world leaders like Putin stand up in the UN and openly point out to the US that the "Emperor has no clothes", then the penny will soon drop in Israel as well. This is what Phil is saying. I agree with him. Goldberg is afraid of the truth.

      In Haaretz today Peter Beinart says that by accusing Obama of anti-semitism and dog whistling etc "They are seeking to magnify AIPAC’s power by making criticism of it taboo. It’s important that they fail. Because while American Jewish political power is both legitimate and necessary, unaccountable Jewish power is not. It’s not good for American national security. It’s not good for American democracy. And it’s not good for us."

      Let's hope that more and more prominent supporters of Israel will call out those who make criticism of Israel a taboo subject.

      Jhitchcock wrote above that Palestinian BDS leaders, including Abunimah, Barghouti, and many others very forcefully and publicly disavow the antisemitism of anti-Zionists.

      In a recent Mondoweiss post I wrote that some who call out antisemitism in fellow travelers could be rewarded. This is not necessarily untrue or disingenuous.

      "1) An attempt to control the narrative and/or suppress the influence of others (who have ideas that compete with or conflict with the accuser’s narrative) by falsely labeling the competitor as an anti-Semite and thus silencing him. Note that this strategy can even extend to the point where the desire is to stop the victim spreading his message because this will feed anti-Semitism (see below). In this case the critic is protecting the group from criticism and its negative consequences. The critic could even feel that the claims of the victim might trigger anti-Semitism.
      2) Some may feel guilty about their perceived anti-Jewish or anti-Israel behavior and look for legitimate ways to atone within their group. The easiest way is to jump on to some visible bandwagon that labels a prominent person (a threat to the Zionist narrative) as an anti-Semite. For example, write an article saying/implying that Jimmy Carter or some prominent person or author is an anti-Semite. This can be a form of atonement or reaffirmation of group affiliation on the critic’s part for daring to speak against the group. Therefore, the critic could get some immediate positive feedback or reinforcement from the group that has already been primed that this prominent victim is an anti-Semite. Calling out anti-Semites could have a significant protective effects for those who criticize the group. It is a way of showing support for the group."

      Similarly, a Palestinian or any non-Jew could also use this same strategy in order to further his cause, gain support and build up protection from assault. It is obvious that criticizing antisemites could be a powerful way to claim respectability and demonstrate uncontroversial qualities. I am not saying that anyone is insincere but I want to present the complexities of human behavior. To attain credibility is this area is fraught with risk; group membership, affirmation and acceptance is critical for support and survival. In caution, I must point out that when someone of the status of John Mearsheimer praises a book as fascinating and provocative, it is disturbing when many others criticize the book and Mearsheimer too, as antisemitic. The problem is the vague interpretation of antisemitic motives and the mutating meaning of words like antisemitism. In this area of activism it is not hard to get enthusiastic people to sign petitions and letters without much thought. I am reminded of the AIPAC employee who implied that 70 senators would promptly sign his napkin. The words Cuckzionist and Cuckantizionist come to mind given the recent national prominence of the word Cuckservative.

      Annie - this is a very cogent analysis - thank you - The event that really got the attention of the partisans was the "First American National Summit Reassessing US-Israel relations" at the National Press Club on March 7, 2014. Phil and Alison were speakers as well as Stephen Walt and many strident critics of Israel. It is all up on C-SPAN and it was a stunning conference, shunned by the MSM - or as I call it The Mainstream Disproportionately Jewish Media (MSDJM). I was actually amazed that it could happen in DC. In particular, Alison was one of the most articulate and effective speakers at this conference. I had never hear her speak before and I was riveted to the chair. Thousands of people who did not know her before, became admirers or critics.

      You quote Alissa Wise of JVP on her analysis of antisemitism.
      In this article she says "anti-Semitism manifests institutionally, like the quotas at US universities that were in place until the 1970s."
      But this is an incomplete picture - in fact, the Jewish portion of Harvard’s entering class dropped from nearly 30 percent in 1925 to 15 percent the following year (still very high compared to the demographic) and remained roughly static until the period of the WW2 when it started to rise again. In 1946, Jewish enrollment at Harvard was already at 6 times parity and has steadily increased to nearly 12 times parity in 2014 for both Yale and Harvard. Today Jews are at least 25% of the student body at Harvard, Yale and Columbia according to Hillel.
      These old time quotas applied to the Jews before WW2, are now being used against Asians who apply to Ivy League Schools. The percentage of college-age Asian-Americans attending Harvard peaked around 1993, and has since dropped by over 50 percent, a decline somewhat larger than the fall in Jewish enrollment which followed the imposition of secret quotas in 1925. Even while Asian-American academic achievement trends were rising dramatically, the relative enrollment of Asians at Harvard was plummeting, dropping by over half during the last twenty years, with a range of similar declines also occurring at Yale, Cornell, and most other Ivy League universities. Columbia, in the heart of heavily Asian New York City, showed the steepest decline of all. In fact, altogether 4 percent of college-age American Jews are currently enrolled in the Ivy League, compared to just 1 percent of Asians and about 0.1 percent of whites of Christian background.
      This implies that Jewish enrollment at Ivy League schools is roughly 600 percent greater relative to Asians than should be expected under a strictly meritocratic admissions system. At Harvard in 2014 that is an amazing 12 times parity for Jewish students.
      CALTECH the school which admits students based on the strictest, most objective academic standards has by a very wide margin the lowest Jewish enrollment 5.5% for any elite university. I got a lot of my information in this detailed statistical analysis by Ron Unz and in books that he quotes.

      Yes - the Rachel Corrie foundation is speaking out against Alison Weir in support of USCEIO. It may be some partisan in the foundation or some propaganda that has influenced the foundation deceptively. This is typical of the current campaign of innuendo and guilt by association. So ironic that the parents had also appeared on the program themselves. I have noticed in my reading that there has been an incitement of many organizations to speak up against Alison Weir in support of USCEIO. Again, the problem is merely the definition of antisemitism which is not rigorously upheld even by our own site. A definition that is allowed passively to meander into the realms of magical thinking, innuendo and irrational thought processes.
      Antisemitism is prejudice against, hatred of, or discrimination against Jews as an ethnic, religious, or racial group. Antisemitism is widely considered to be a form of racism.

      jhitchcock - thank you so much for your challenging contribution to this amazing and timely roundtable that has elicited so much activity in the posts - it must be record-breaking. A lot of fascinating topics have been released from suppression and it is my hope that we will become more discerning in our evaluation and definition of anti-Semitism along with other racist tropes. There is so much need for analysis rather than thoughtless name-calling which only elicit an emotional response and rejection.
      With regard to your first point, I agree; but I personally fear that the universal antiracist principles of the movement can be invoked by an abnormal outlier for the sole purpose of excommunicating an ally, in this case Alison Weir. I do not feel that her modest activities could damage the credibility of the movement and associated organizations for their target audiences. In fact, I suspect that the JVP and the ETO have been hoisted on their own petard and Weir is getting a lot of well-deserved publicity for her activities. I don't question Weir's approach at all, I question the people at JVO and ETO who started this witch-hunt. It is their pathology that I find more damaging and which I have tried to explore in my last post.
      You say "And Weir has been by far the loudest and most prominent voice on the attack in this situation." Your statement here is unfair in my opinion. She is only responding to the unwarranted attack by others. I would say that the original indictments by ETO and JVP are the loudest and most prominent voices in this incident. The letter Alison received announced "Jewish Voice for Peace has chosen not to work with you because our central tenet is opposition to racism in all its forms, and you have chosen repeatedly to associate yourself with people who advocate for racism." JVP communicated this "decision" to their chapter leaders.
      In her article after yours, Susan Landau writes "Allison Weir, who took her defense to the public domain, presumably feeling under attack with no other recourse." In my opinion, it is a reasonable analysis that Alison had no other alternative but to take her case to the public or else take her beating in submission, and accept her classification as a racist.
      I do appreciate your reassessment of Counterpunch. Thank you. With regard to your redefinition of Counterpunch as publishing some questionable articles, you could say the same about the NY Times. I question every article I read but please remember that nowadays the word questionable means controversial. I am a Prof at a Medical School - dozens of my colleagues read Counterpunch and prefer it to the NYT, although we read the NYT. The word questionable is merely part of the lazy innuendo along with words like controversial, dubious, problematical and unfortunately, "anti-Semitic".
      Finally, the bottom line is that you think that Alison is showing some subtle signs of anti-Semitism but I think that you are showing some subtle signs of prejudice against her. I think that you have been influenced by all the innuendo that preceded you. The more important point is that we have bigger fish to fry in order to influence the Palestinian's plight. Ron

      You have said it all very eloquently. Thank you. I have exactly the same feelings. The word anti-Semite has a lot of excess baggage and people need to think twice before using it. It is a very serious accusation that is used so lightly and carelessly. Perhaps there is a legal remedy for this slur in the future as in the case of Salaita.

    • Thank you sincerely for covering this unfortunate development. It is important that we try to analyze this conflict. In my opinion, it is a widespread problem due to the careless use of the word anti-Semitism which has powerful emotional significance and often has highly significant negative consequences for the victim.
      The first article of the three is reminiscent to the innuendo and "guilt by association" that has already done the damage to Alison Weir. As evidence that Counterpunch (which published Alison Weir's articles) is "a questionable publication in its own right" the first article of the three quotes a blog. In my opinion, to call Counterpunch or even Mondoweiss a questionable publication is as unsustainable and inappropriate as calling Alison Weir an anti-Semite. As mentioned in the posts for this article, Gilad Atzmon is another prominent critic who is often called a racist. I read Atzmon's recent book after seeing Mearsheimer's review describing the book as "fascinating and provocative". I totally agree with him. A very stimulating book in my opinion. Im not sure I agree with everything in it but I do not rush to call him an anti-Semite or a racist like so many who do not even appear to have read the book. After studying the book it is clear to me that Atzmon like Weir is not a racist.
      The next two articles are very informative and helpful in understanding the significance of the word anti-Semite in our struggle for Palestinian justice. The second article points out that it is better to solve these issues by discussion and understanding rather than by public flagellation. The third article succinctly confirms my own analysis that Alison Weir is not an anti-Semite.
      Antisemitism is prejudice against, hatred of, or discrimination against Jews as an ethnic, religious, or racial group. The real problem that we are dealing with here, is that the definition of anti-Semitism has at times morphed into something much more trivial, qualitative and irreproducible. We need to come to grips with the fact that very few Americans are classical anti-Semites who hate Jews as a group. It is actually possible to disagree with the Israel government, Zionism or AIPAC's behavior without hating Jews. I personally do not hate Jews at all but I have some very negative feelings about aspects of Israel, AIPAC and some consequences of Zionism. Israel is not Judaism - Zionism is not Judaism - and AIPAC is not Judaism. But the Israel-partisans subtly change the definition of anti-Semitism so that anti-Zionism or criticism of Israel becomes anti-Semitism, even by law if certain Zionist organizations have their way. It is almost at the level of "we say you are an anti-Semite, now you must prove that you are not". The complex jargon of variations including canards, tropes, dog-whistles and Jew Baiting is enough to make my head spin even as an observer rather than a victim. The accusations and insinuations of anti-Semitism can even be used to suppress criticism of Israel and change the subject.
      In my opinion these attacks on Alison Weir are largely innuendo and guilt by association. It is not appropriate to reject our allies on such flimsy grounds. The bar for being labeled as an anti-Semite is set so low (as we are finding out in the case of Alison Weir and Steven Salaita) that there are (were) few risks involved in invoking the slur. It could hurt at least as much as being called a child-molester but no legal proof have usually been required although this may change given the success of Salaita in advancing his case. I see two possible reasons for this inappropriate behavior by the accusers.
      1) An attempt to control the narrative and/or suppress the influence of others (who have ideas that compete with or conflict with the accuser's narrative) by falsely labeling the competitor as an anti-Semite and thus silencing them. Note that this strategy can even extend to the point where the desire is to stop the victim spreading his message because this will feed anti-Semitism (see below). In this case the critic is protecting the group from criticism and its negative consequences. The critic could even feel that the claims of the victim might trigger anti-Semitism.
      2) Some may feel guilty about their perceived anti-Jewish or anti-Israel behavior and look for legitimate ways to atone within their group. The easiest way is to jump on to some visible bandwagon that labels a prominent person (a threat to the Zionist narrative) as an anti-Semite. For example, write an article saying/implying that Jimmy Carter or some prominent person or author is an anti-Semite. This can be a form of atonement or reaffirmation of group affiliation on the critic's part for daring to speak against the group. Therefore, the critic could get some immediate positive feedback or reinforcement from the group that has already been primed that this prominent victim is an anti-Semite. Calling out anti-Semites could have a significant protective effects for those who criticize the group. It is a way of showing support for the group.

      But unfortunately a large number of US Jews and others support Israel and AIPAC unconditionally and fund our politicians if they agree to do the same. Israel is the only country in the world that is against the deal with Iran only because Israel wants to be top nuclear dog in the Middle East. Right now AIPAC are spending 40 million dollars in the USA in order to change public opinion to join them in defying Obama and opposing the Iran deal. This is an epic moment in our history. If Israel fails in this shameless exercise, its deceptive and mendacious role in US foreign policy will be checked. What is good for Israel and what is good for the US are two different things.

      Is this the evidence for the "traditional anti-Semitism" that you say accounts for Buchanan's dislike of Israel? Many claim that a significant proportion of modern anti-Semitism is caused by Netanyahu's behavior and Israel's violent pathology. This has little to do with white supremacism, Pat Buchanan or David Duke.

    • I am delighted that you mentioned Pat Buchanan. For 20 years Pat has been saying milder versions of these facts about Israel but was finally excommunicated by the MSM a few years ago. The Kennedy family feud with organized crime in the liquor business and other areas also plays a role combined with JFK's obvious lack of zealotry for Israel and his disposition towards peace as opposed to war. The basic revelation in this book is that JFK and his father Joe had a lot of diverse enemies including ZIonists, Mafia, military, political, CIA and industrial. Secondly, Meyer Lansky was more of a overall mafia kingpin than is widely appreciated, with huge international skills and abilities. And thirdly, Lansky was prominently and financially connected to Israel and Zionist networks at the highest level. Piper's book does not make strident claims, it just explains a lot of connections in great detail and in a new light, that astonished even me. He explores the Mossad, Zionist, Israel connection in a very well informed, sophisticated but uninhibited way.

    • Let's say it like it is. Max is unique and amazing. Superlatives do not exist to praise him as he deserves. The problem is that the MSM is heavily Jewish or controlled by Jews and they do not want to say anything critical about Israel. Even Michael Oren agrees with me about the control of the media. The critics of Walt and Mearsheimer tried every trick in the book to destroy them and without evidence labeled them as crazies, questionables, and anti-Semites. But Walt and Mearsheimer had presented only the facts and irrefutable logic because they are brilliant experts in foreign policy and international affairs with immense credibility. Nonetheless, Walt and Mearsheimer were injured by the lies and distortions of this insubstantial but widespread attach. The treatment of Walt and Mearsheimer by the Jews will remain as a dramatic episode in history like the Dreyfus affair. Many years later the two are still famous Professors and although they may be distrusted by the original attackers, they are fully restored in the minds of rational and honest people. It is totally legitimate and is not antisemitism to loathe the behavior of the Israeli government. The other reason for this conflation of antizionism and antisemitism is to make both punishable by law or suppress any criticism of Israel by intimidating the critic with the slur of antisemitism.

      I appreciate Mondoweiss because it gives me the opportunity to learn and to document my own frustrations about Israel/Palestine and help to present the truth in a dysfunctional USA where ZIonists in the media work diligently and irrationally to obfuscate the facts, block discussion and protect a greater Israel from criticism. Even a year ago I tried to post critical remarks about Israel and its ZIonist partisans that never saw the light of day. Amazingly, only a year later my critical remarks are shared freely and are already conventional compared with what I can read in some of the MSM. The positive change in the past year has been extraordinary. Only this week Max Blumenthal was invited to publish him opinions by the NY Times. The rapid improvement in disseminating the truth about Israel has improved in part because of the prominent and respected forum that Mondoweiss has offered to those who want a change for the better in Israel reporting. The media prominence of Mondoweiss and its solid reputation has given our forum a huge significance that has accelerated change beyond our wildest dreams. This achievement reflects the diligence and good judgment of our founders. I take my hat off to you and a contribution will follow.

The power of the internet has changed all this in a very short time.

It seems to me that this is the fact that is unjust. These 25% of Jews unfairly exclude the better qualified Asians from acceptance at the Ivy League schools.

      But in Scene 1 Shylock says "I am a Jew." Neverthess, many people only learn that Shylock was a sneaky merchant in Shakespeare and the word Shylock is often used to mean such. Many people like myself will not use the word Shylock because he was a Jew and it implies that all Jews are sneaky or dishonest and this is not true and is an insult.

      But I have several very well educated Jewish friends who are exactly the same as this. They too say that they hate the awful occupation and the terrible settlers but appear to support the whole colonial adventure on many other levels. Are they just saying this to impress me ? Is it due to a solid determination not to criticize other Jews ?

      As you reported, Art Spiegelman — celebrated comic book artist, illustrator and author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Maus — said on Facebook that “Israel is like some badly battered child with PTSD who has grown up to batter others.”

      This comes closest to explaining the extreme pathology of Israel. And the current Israeli government has achieved success by reinforcing and strengthening this pathology.

Any criticism of Israel or Jewry was not open to discussion and the punishment was banishment.
