Thank you for your comment. I agree with what you have said, that Howard was addressing the Israel Action Committee of his synagogue, and that these people most likely care only about Jews. He was probably working on the priniciple that such people only care about Jews, and that's why he made it as Judeocentric as possible.
Let that statement you made sink in. Swirl it around in your brain. Something doesn't sit just right. If what you say is true, he should be talking to these people about a lot more than the current rap sheet of crimes perpetrated by the Israelis; he should be calling them out on a much deeper mental illness. He should be calling them out on their entire worldview. And when you call someone out on their mental illness, you don't adopt their own delusions when talking with them. You don't speak in terms of their fantasies (Jews are the victims of history, yes, yes, but now the Palestinians are the new Jews), you calmly point out truths.
Okay Annie, let's take a look and delve into this.
Certainly Howard started that sentence as you quoted. Now let's go on. Let's finish the sentence:
"When will we stand up, as human beings, as a committee and as a Temple,..."
The flavor has changed. We continue:
"If we say we hold Jewish values, we will stand up..."
"Are the Palestinians, in the face of the Israeli Goliath, the new Jews?"
No, they are the same old Palestinians, oppressed the same way they've been oppressed by the Jews for years.
"Their struggle brings to my mind images of the Jews on the Exodus on a hunger strike..."
This guy can't relate to the fact that the Palestinians have their own existential reality, their own narrative, their own suffering. Why does everything have to be related to the suffering of the Jews? The eternal suffering? The pinnacle of suffering? The suffering three times as great at least (and that's open for vilification or accusations of thought crimes for victim reductionism) as that of any other ethnic group...
"We as Jews who remember the Holocaust and the victimization of the Jewish people stand in solidarity with the new Jews. "
Have you received the permission of any Palestinian people, Howard, to label them "the new Jews"? How dare you?
"As Jews, we need to stand up as Jews and reclaim our heritage."
So, in summary, a throwoff initial comment regarding being members of the human race, and then it's the usual. But it's more. It's a constant harping on the victimhood of the Jews, a constant drumbeat of Judaising the suffering of the Palestinians. It's disgusting and twisted and mentally unsound. It's not surprising.
As Keith mentioned below, this recent brutal massacre in Gaza is NOTHING new. This has been going on for years, and Howard and his synagogue in Westchester, New York have been supporting it through their silence for years. Supporting it by flying the flag of Israel. Supporting it by donating money to politicians who support Israel.
There's one thing that I agree with completely with Howard, and I'll quote him:
"If we don’t stand up and say no, we are complicit in murder, plain and simple."
Guilty as charged, Howard!!!! When does the trial start?
If I had US$5 for every time Phil Weiss said "It has finally happened" or "It's finally happening" or "It's really going to happen this time", I would be a couple of hundred dollars richer than I am now. I agree with RoHa's sobering statement regarding the US Congress: let me know when we have statements denouncing Israel and demanding an end to all US aid from the 70 Senators who would sign the napkin within 24 hours. Call me a cynic, call me a realist, call me a party pooper. Just another episode of advanced lawn management to add to a long list of seasonal mowing of the lawn. Yes, they mow the lawn in Israel, even as the East Coast of the US gets snow in early April.
My hopes for change in the I/P conflict lie in outside forces, but certainly not in some kind of change in the attitudes of US Jews, or US Christians, or US policy for that matter. Give up on that stale dream, realists. My hope for change in the I/P conflict lie in real forces: Hezzbollah, Syria, Iran, Russia. The Resistance. The Israelis continue their turkey shoot in Gaza, and the media makes some noise, Phil and company have a fit, AIPAC squeezes its fist a bit tighter on its puppets in the US Congress, but in Lebanon and Syria hard men continue preparing for the future, a future that they know is real, and is coming. They have been preparing non-stop since 2006, and they have made significant progress. They are preparing now with a larger group of hard men, better organized, men with better military material, more experience, better training. They have taken advantage of massive US errors, often at the behest of Israel, played out to the tired old muzak of "Assad must go". They have sharpened their skills in battles against the US/Saudi/Israel supported Sunnite radical head choppers, street by street, house by house, patient, formidable, fearless, confident. Every day more progress. Every day the Syrian air defenses are modernized and integrated more closely with the Russian air defenses. Every day Hezzbollah amasses a growing arsenal of accurate guided missiles capable of striking any place in Israel, from Dimona to chemical tanks in Haifa. Every day plans are made, and these plans will change the situation.
US voices changing their tired tune of blank check support for Israel? Come on, even the Christian voices are totally self-censoring out of fear of the anti-semite card, those that is who haven't drunk the evangelical fundamentalist end of times kool aid and will support Israel until their imagined war between Gog and Magog. US Jewish voices changing their support in any REAL way? A pipe dream.
Long live the Resistance.
Fortunately, permission from the NYT to bomb civilians in Lebanon is not worth the energy it takes to utter or scribble. Permission to bomb civilians in Lebanon is incrementally being withheld by Nasrallah and the brave fighters of the resistance. Yes, Israel has long depended on its air superiority to bomb civilians in south Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut, but it is now becoming clear that the cost is increasing exponentially. We should rightfully call this "price tag". The 2006 on-air bombing (Nasrallah's speech telling people to look to the sea off Beirut) of the Israeli ship and the huge losses of tanks in their military defeat in Lebanon, through to today's increased number and range of missiles in Hezbollah's arsenal, to the massive experience gained by Hezbollah fighters in real battles against brave crazy Takfiri in Syria all lead to an Israel that understands that the reality of the situation has changed. And they don't like it. Not one bit. They don't have the stomach for ANY ground actions in Lebanon or Syria. There are hard men waiting for them, waiting to kill and be killed, believing that God is with them. Any future bombings of civilians in Lebanon will come with a heavy price tag. There is currently a regrouping going on as various flavors of terrorsts in Syria are flushed out and destroyed. SAA will come out stronger; Hezzbollah will come out stronger; Iran's influence will be increased. The misguided moves of the US, driven by pro-Israel neocons and cheered on by Israeli leaders who preferred ISIS to Assad have backfired bigly, hugely, substantially. Really, who gives a fig about the permission of the NYT? It's meaningless, a Hollywood fantasy in an otherwise real world.
Maybe Trump is playing these clowns. I mean the never-Trump, pro-Israel crowd, the William Kristols, the Max Boots, the Podhoretzes, etc. They attack and demean Trump at every turn, and then, BAM, old Don pulls out a pro-Israel policy or an attack on a Syrian airport, and suddenly, "He's downright presidential." Keep this up, and the sheep may actually wake up to the unbelievable hypocrisy of these people, people who have been wrong again and again and again on every foreign policy disaster for the last two decades, and yet still they somehow retain high-paying, influential media jobs, appear as talking heads on mainstream TV programs, and influence people nation- and world-wide.
Could Trump be shining a light on nightcrawlers who prefer the dark?
In the unreal or surreal world of Ms. Reality, who borrowed her name from Orwellian thought, there are no humans with a higher understanding of the I/P conflict in Palestine than US Senators. Geez, Ossinev. How could you miss the idea that Roger Waters claimed that a US Senator, funded, coddled and AIPAC-trained to stand up and accept her Congressional duties to protect and secure the State of Israel as an ultimate priority, far outweighing the needs and liberties of those pesky, bothersome maggots known as "constituents" or deplorable "voters", might not have a balanced outlook on the situation in Palestine and the best road toward peace, or at least "pieces". The DONORS, the DONORS. Picture Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now, but delete the word "horror" and replace it with "DONORS". BDS is the Resistance, along with Syria, Iran, Russia, China, Hezzbollah, and ME. Get used to us; we don't scare easily, we don't like windbag sissies with big friends and two-thousand year old narcissistic chips on their shoulders, and WE'RE HERE TO STAY. We'll be seeing you.
It's clear that there are a number of contributing factors that led to HRC's loss in the election, and I would agree with these professors and Phil Weiss that anti-war feeling, if not higher casualty rates in Pa., Wisc. and Mi., is among them. I do not include Russian meddling or hacking among the factors. I think that a much more compelling argument for a major contributing factor can be found in the rant by Uncle Chang, prompted by the freak Shia LaBeouf's "art installation" camera in NYC, right around the corner from Phil! Now I know that such a cogent argument (from a Chinese American) that is diametrically opposed to Phil's worldview would escape his attention, but it should be examined and considered. Here is the opening.
"This is a message to you, the neoliberals, the SJWs, the blue pills, the antifa, whatever you want to call yourselves. This is why you lost, part 2. You lost because you told the poor, white working families in rural Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan that despite losing their jobs, despite their factories closing down and their communities emptying out, that they were the privileged ones, because of their skin color. That they benefit from white privilege. You guys are the privileged ones. You guys are so f****** out of touch. You’re sitting in your big, comfy chairs in your large office spaces in the ivory towers of university sociology departments, and you actually think that we working class people give two sh*** and a f*** about your identity politics. You think we care about intersectional trans-feminism when – look, I come from a working class family, alright, and the struggle doesn’t discriminate. The struggle is the same. Our parents work their hands off to provide a better future for us so that we don’t have to struggle. And when their jobs left, that dream left with them. And you think we care about identity politics, when the first thing that pops into our minds when we wake up is whether or not we’re going to make the rent this month, whether or not we have money for food in our budget, or whether or not our bronze tier Obamacare plan covers little Brittney’s weird cough. Brittney is sick, so sick. We don’t know what’s wrong with her; it might be because we don’t have enough money, we can only afford to feed her cold chicken tenders. And yet you guys are the real racist ones, but you’ve redefined the word racism to mean power, privilege, and prejudice. You’ve twisted the definition so that we can’t use the word against you, but you can use it against us and against anybody who disagrees with you, because under this new definition, all white people are racists, all people who defend white people are either racists themselves or self-hating Uncle Toms or Uncle Changs. You call people who disagree with you racist, sexist, Nazis. You don’t listen to us when we try to tell you why we believe what we believe. You’ve demonized us and dehumanized us, so in your mind it’s okay to punch us, because what’s more American than punching a Nazi! "
