I was at the July 24 “Support Gaza” Rally that started at Foley Square. The NYPD were there, were friendly, and kept order. Frankly, I felt like they were protecting ME from potential Zionist extremists. Without getting into “Stop & Frisk,” and other matters, the NYPD’s only interest in any public rallies, whatever the cause, is to ensure a peaceful environment for the attendees to ‘do their thing.’
Of course, as a previous commenter noted, Finkelstein & the others wanted to get arrested. That’s a deliberate civil disobedience tactic, but is unrelated to how the NYPD handles rallies.
I understand & agree with the general point of your article. Also, I cannot speak to what is happening in other cities. But right now, in New York, the NYPD are the best friends that pro-Palestinian marchers could have.
