From CQ Politics:
House Select Intelligence Chairman Silvestre Reyes has told the panel’s staff to begin investigating an incident in which Rep. Jane Harman was recorded on a wiretap talking with a suspected Israeli agent . . .
“In the context of the Harman incident, the committee is looking into the issue, including NSA involvement, as well as any other matter directly related to the committee’s jurisdiction over the intelligence community,” committee spokeswoman Courtney Littig said.
Also, Jeff Stein continues to leak tidbits and corrections to the story he helped kick off. Late last night he posted to the Spy Talk blog that Pelosi had not been informed about the Harman wiretap as part of routine official protocol, but as a CIA end run around Alberto Gonzales:
Intelligence officials, angry that former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales had blocked an FBI investigation into Democratic Rep. Jane Harman’s interactions with a suspected Israeli agent, tipped off Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, that Harman had been picked up on a court-ordered National Security Agency wiretap targeting the agent.
In doing so, the officials flouted an order by Gonzales not to inform Pelosi, three former national security officials said.
The story continues:
A well-placed source said an official from the CIA had gone around Gonzales to inform Pelosi about Harman being picked up on the wiretap . . .
On April 19 Congressional Quarterly reported that the FBI was poised to question Harman about the telephone call and her interactions with the suspected Israeli agent when Gonzales intervened, telling then-CIA Director Porter Goss, FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III and National Intelligence chief John D. Negroponte not to brief Pelosi, according to three former national security officials.
Goss, Mueller and Negroponte have declined to comment on CQ’s story.
Gonzales told Goss that he “needed Jane’s help” in defending the administration’s warrantless wiretap program, which was about to be revealed by The New York Times, in December 2005.
Frustrated and angry at Gonzales for aborting the investigation, intelligence officials let Pelosi know about the wiretap and its contents, according to the three former national security officials.
“She knew. We made sure she knew,” said one of the former officials, chuckling.

Check this out! Larry Franklin is not in prison.
According to JTA:

Franklin was sentenced to just over 12.5 years, it is true – and that was by all accounts not a lenient sentence – but his time was deferred until after he testifies at the Rosen and Weissman trial. I heard from sources at the time that prosecutors would recommend a reduction to three years should he cooperate, and that Judge T.S. Ellis was likely to take the deal.

Ron Kampeas … in covering the classified information case against former AIPAC staffers Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman …
Note Mr. Kampeas' spin when he calls a five-count indictment under the Espionage act a 'classified information case', a half-truth that might leave uninformed readers the impression that all the hullabaloo was over a few innocently misplaced papers.
Adam, you report that the house intelligence comm may look at the Harman matter… but the question is, what exactly will they be looking for?
Will they be asking if a House member was improperly influenced by an agent of a foreign government? Or will they be asking about the appropriateness of the recording of a conversation by Saban (or whoever it was) talking to Harman? In other words, can this be a way of helping Jane and aipac? Can we expect anything better than that from this congress?
So, who is going to look at the contents of the wiretap??? — that a Ranking member within the Intelligence committee was described as having no problem trying to interfere in an ongoing "espionage case" — Did 'she' happen to notify anyone of her conversation?
This is CYA bullshit… they are all running scared because they know Harman is not the only one up to their necks with the Israel Lobby and helping them push their agenda. Harman has just shown everyone just how rank it all is.
There should at least be an 'ethical' investigation if nothing else… Hell, I didn't actually see mounds of cash in Jefferson's freezer — but at least I saw some of his colleagues acknowledge if he had done what was alleged that he had actually done something wrong!
If the Democrats think they can pull the wool over our eyes on this one they are sadly mistaken… people are not completely stupid… This is serious stuff.
I think the real story is the extent of the Neocon AIPAC takeover of the Bush Administration, the turning of its levers of power to advance the Neocon agenda. Of course AIPAC wanted Jane Harman as top Dem on House Intel, and they wanted her to be beholden to them for getting there. All the better to share information – with money, the dual currencies of power in Washington. I haven't thought of Goss as being a hero of the Realists, but maybe he was.
It's also a story of the toxicity, and the effectiveness, of the tactics used by the Likud Lobby – take what you want, do what you need to do, and deflect all criticism as Anti-Semitic canards, quickly branding any critic as a "BIGOT!" The MSM enables this by respecting certain taboos, or forbidden memes, which must not be mentioned – whether one is Jewish, whether one is a Zionist, whether one's Jewish, Zionist or Neocon character or beliefs might serve as motivation, or help explain, the pulling of the levers of power, in government, or in the press.
I think it will be interesting to find out who Harman called in the White House, who pulled Gonzales's strings to get him to halt the investigation of her, and turn her to the good fight in favor of warrantless wiretapping, part of the Neocon controlled police state. That will tell a tale, and could amount to obstruction of justice. Why do I think it will turn out to be the same person who called Judy Miller to alert her to search warrants about to be served on those Muslim charities? Might be interesting to match the Scooter Libby timeline to the Harman timeline, recognizing that they are both Justice Department timelines, in part.
I also bet Pelosi got enough information from Goss or someone to know Harman had turned up in the middle of a serious investigation of serious crimes, which she is prohibited from revealing because of ongoing investigations. This better explains her obvious lack of candor on what she knew and when, and why she didn't tell Harman.
Jim Harris is a very smart fellow.
“In the context of the Harman incident, the committee is looking into the issue, including NSA involvement, as well as any other matter directly related to the committee’s jurisdiction over the intelligence community,” committee spokeswoman Courtney Littig said.
I think this is a wishy-washy announcement of a whitewash with the "as well as any other matter directly related to the committee’s jurisdiction over the intelligence community" implying that they are concerned that they don't come under the wiretap. Rep. Sylvestre Reyes is an AIPAC operative, albeit not likely a true-believer.
AIPAC Bio: Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-TX 16th District)
Hill Holds Fire on Harman
Top Democrat urges "continuity" for CIA, DNI and interrogation policies
Reyes is sooo smart…
Just the mention of "Scooter Libby" gives me the shivers…
His connection to the Marc Rich case, Hillary avoiding the question asking if she thought this guy should go down. The unusual 'friendship?' and that Clinton's close friend Carville and Matlin have with this, supporting him and giving a fundraising event in their house…
Just Ughh…
I remember telling a friend last year that the Israeli corruption of congressional dems and any war of choice by Obama would be the undoing of the Democratic party and they would end up in the same tiolet as the Repubs. So Jane..Bring it on.
Meanwhile something for the sleuths among us:
Harper on the Harman/AIPAC affair.
Before commenting on the significance of the Harmon affair, I want to just spell out some relevant dates, to situate the actions of AIPAC, Harmon, etc. I think it is pretty clear that the NSA intercept occurred in late 2005. Here is a brief timeline.
May 26, 2005, Larry Franklin is indicted for passing classified material to Israeli agents.
August 4, 2005, Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman, both AIPAC employees, are indicted as part of the Franklin spy operation.
December 16, 2005, James Risen's story on the Bush Administration's warrantless-wiretaps appears in the New York Times.
January 20, 2006, Larry Franklin is sentenced to 12 years in prison, as part of a plea agreement, under which he promises to fully cooperate with Federal prosecutors on any investigation in which he may have material evidence.
According to Jeff Stein's CQ initial story of April 19, 2009, AG Gonzales intervened to quash the probe of Harmon, in return for her sounding off in defense of the Administration, when the Risen article came out. Clearly, Risen and his New York Times fact-checkers were calling into the Administration prior to publication, so the White House and AG Office knew it was coming.
So my guess is that the 2005 or 2006 conflicting reports on when the NSA wiretap of Rep. Harmon occurred is somewhat settled. It was most likely some time in late 2005, prior to the publication of the Risen story.
Now, for the meat of the matter. Israel was desperate to get its hands on Pentagon reports on U.S. posture towards Iran and Iran's nuclear weapons program, asymmetric operations in Iraq, etc. They wanted hard copy of a specific document, and the AIPAC boys went to Franklin to get it. Those facts are pretty clearly spelled out in the Franklin and Rosen/Weissman indictments. So this is not such a gray area case of simply getting verbal intelligence over lunch. This was cold, hard espionage.
And furthermore, a senior Mossad official, then "retired" from the official service, named Uzi Arad, was all over the Franklin case. After leaving Mossad, Arad became a top national security advisor to Bibi Netanyahu, and became head of one of the key think tanks in Israel at Herzliya. His outfit hosts an annual global security conference that is probably the biggest such event in Israel, almost parallel to the Wehrkunde annual event in Munich. Arad invited Larry Franklin to attend at least one of these Herzliya conferences, and Arad had at least two meetings with Franklin at the Pentagon cafeteria, in the period leading up to Franklin's indictment.
My assessment is that Arad was functioning as a spy handler for Israel, and was taking control of Franklin at the time the whole thing blew up. After being so badly burned by Pollard affair, Israel shifted some of its spy operations to "think tanks" which just happened to be run by "retired" Mossad case officers.
Late 2005 into 2006, the Pentagon neocon apparatus, Cheney's crew and Israeli rightwing were all agressively pushing war against both Syria and Iran, even though we were going through a very intense phase in Iraq. With Bush and Cheney in their camp, the Israelis were arrogant that they could do anything they wanted in Washington.
Franklin was, remember, a gopher for Feith, Wurmser, Luti, Rhode, Shulsky, Wolfowitz, Perle, Ledeen etal. Franklin had done two tours of duty as an assistant air attache (USAF) in Israel, and was booted out the second time for unauthorized contact with Israeli military and intelligence personnel. He was used by the hardcore neocons to run errands, like pass classified documents, through AIPAC, to Israel. I attended his sentencing, and he was a totally broken guy. His wife had serious medical problems, and she was threatened with jail, for her complicity in his passing classified materials to the Israelis.
So, who might have been the actual target of the NSA wiretap that snared Jane? Rosen and Weissman were already indicted, so it is doubtful they would have been directly involved in the call to Harmon. I am told by a senior U.S. intelligence source that the caller was an American, maybe a dual citizen. So that would tend to rule out Uzi Arad, although he is still a target of U.S. investigation, as evidenced by the fact that he had a hard time just this past week getting a visa to come to the U.S. as the national security aide to Bibi.
Was the caller Dennis Ross? As Col. Lang readers know, at the time, Ross was heading a front group for the Jewish Agency, an official arm of the Israeli government (one might even say that the Israeli government is an official arm of the Jewish Agency). He was working in think tanks financed by Haim Saben, and Saben's name has appeared as a peripheral figure in this sordid affair, through promises of big bucks to the Democrats for the 2006 midterm election. Martin Indyk is another name that fits the bill, and it may be that Indyk's failure to even get an honorable mention post with Obama is indication that he may have been the one.
What Jane Harmon agreed to do is a crime. The conversation, itself, is criminal, and this cannot be ignored. Judging from the reports from those who have read the transcript, by the end of the call, she had already realized she had gone over the edge, and tried to step back by saying "this conversation never existed," but she was already over the cliff, plunging down.
There are secondary issues of concern, including where to draw the line on NSA/FBI wiretapping of sitting Members of Congress, but that is something to be sorted out in proper time. Right now, the FBI is running a Jihad against targeted members of Congress–Abscam II–and that has to be dealt with, but that is a separate issue from this renewed scandal about Israeli spying and influence buying in Washington.
If there is a weakness in the Rosen/Weissman case, it is the failure of prosecutors to indict AIPAC as an organization, and to freeze their activities until the whole matter was adjudicated. Rosen and Weissman are even suing their former employer, AIPAC, for cutting them loose. AIPAC paid them to do exactly what they did, and it should be AIPAC's responsibility to prove otherwise.
We have reached a point where the divergence of national interests between the United States and Israel is widening, as never before. The Obama Administration policy is a just two-state solution. Israel's policy, especially under the current Netanyahu regime, is to exterminate the Palestinian National Movement, and create a bantustan, behind a wall for the Palestinians. It borders on being a concentration camp.
The stakes here are high, and I, for one, want to see a real reckoning. No coverup, no dropping of charges against Rosen and Weissman. Take the Uzi Arad matter to the public. And, in the course of determining who the NSA was targeting, when Jane took the wrong phone call, do not ignore the role, at that time, of the Pentagon and VP neocons, who were, sadly, let off the hook when Larry Franklin took the fall. This is a 30 year spy ring, going all the way back to Dr. Stephen Bryen's spying while Jimmy Carter was still President. It is time to pull the string that unravels the entire fabric, and maybe this Harmon scandal is the last best opportunity to do just that. Harper

Well the Times reported that Pelosi and all the other democrats as well as the republicans were given repeated briefings on US torture practices by the CIA, including waterboarding. There was not ONE dissenting voice among them. Not one. They are all complicit. So really, it's rather irrelevant anymore who gets caught in what dragnet.
This country is a travesty.
American, just post a summary and a link. (How many times do you have to be told?)
Doppler wrote: "Why do I think it will turn out to be the same person who called Judy Miller to alert her to search warrants about to be served on those Muslim charities?"
Maybe even the same person who called Adam Ciralsky at 60 Minutes to say the FBI was closing in on two AIPAC employees?

Why American, wasn't that you just yesterday letting out a huge snark against those of us interested in what you called the mere "nuts and bolts" of this thing? (On the way to making the hugely important point not to miss the forest for the trees I'll agree.)
So who'da thunk you're a nutter and bolter non pareil?
In any event thanks for the Harper thing.
"Might be interesting to match the Scooter Libby timeline to the Harman timeline, recognizing that they are both Justice Department timelines, in part."
And also, the AIPAC spy case time line.
All three incidents track USA and Israel IT & AIPAC\Mossad concerning US activity regarding Iran and/or Iraq, and Israel's monitoring of each. That is to say, they all regard who will control power over these areas.
No question there is a huge battle that has been going on for a long time, reflecting that Uncle Sam's and Uncle Schlomo's versions of their respective interests are not viewed on the inside as
necessarily compatible. All this kept from the American people, i.e., those who will pay the
silent piper in every way.
Amen, GI Joe.
Rather than pointing out the areas of least compatibility as between Israel & USA, all is muzzled
to send signals they are actually the same country. You know, the 51st state? Just a state that has no USA duties of first allegiance?

Not surprised. When will people wake up.
