About James Marc Leas

James Marc Leas is a past co-chair of the National Lawyers Guild Free Palestine Subcommittee. He collected evidence in the Gaza Strip from November 27 to December 3, 2012 as part of a 20 member delegation from the US and Europe and co-authored several articles describing findings. He also participated in the National Lawyers Guild delegation to Gaza after Operation Cast Lead in February 2009 and contributed to its report, Onslaught: Israel’s Attack on Gaza and the Rule of Law.

Legitimacy crisis: Netanyahu acknowledges Israeli assault lacked legitimacy

Jumping on Hamas’s rejection of the bogus cease-fire offer on Tuesday, July 15, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “Hamas’s rejection of the cease-fire gives Israel full legitimacy to expand the operation to protect our people.” Thus, Netanyahu implicitly admitted that the Israeli government otherwise lacked “full legitimacy.” And Netanyahu acknowledged just how much his government craves legitimacy.

Out to Kill: Israel’s assault on Gaza is not to stop rocket fire 

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he will use ‘any means necessary’ to stop Islamic militant group Hamas from bombing civilians. Well, has it worked? Is rocket fire stopping? Actually, just the opposite. What put a stop to the rocket attacks back in 2009 and in 2012 was when the Israeli government agreed to a cease fire. A cease fire has been the one method that has reliably worked to stop rocket fire. It is also the one method Netanyahu has not tried in 2014–yet.

Years of impunity for Israeli leaders may draw to a close in Turkish flotilla trial

As Turkey is now conducting trials of four high level Israeli officials for the attack on the Mavi Marmara on May 31, 2010, the question of who started the violence and who was acting to defend themselves when Israeli forces stormed the flotilla is not in doubt. The trial in Turkey could be the beginning of the end of impunity for those responsible.

Hold Israel accountable for aggression and war crimes in Gaza

This article will show that neither “Operation Cast Lead” or “Operation Pillar of Defense” actually defended Israel or Israeli civilians. It will also show that Israeli political and military leaders have a non-violent strategy to stop rocket fire that actually works.
