Jewish Division: RJC Blasts Obama Over Dividing Jerusalem

The Republican Jewish Coalition has an ad saying that Obama has waffled on a divided Jerusalem. First he's for an undivided Jerusalem, then he's for a divided one. Jerusalem must remain undivided! says the RJC. I hope the RJC manages to get this issue out there. "…this flip-flop raise[s] concern in the Jewish community about Obama's position on Jerusalem," says Matt Brooks in the RJC press release.

How many American Jews are for an undivided Jerusalem? How many Americans are for an undivided Jerusalem? Let's hope that, per my last post, Obama wins with a divided Jewish vote. Then the neocons will be washed out to sea with McCain, and all the Jews who don't give a sh*t about divided Jerusalem can finally claim a president, and claim that issue, and attack the neocons, and help Israel and the Palestinians get out of the mess.. The end of the "Jewish vote."

I'm an American Jew and I am for a divided Jerusalem. Many of the other American Jews that I know are fine with Jerusalem being divided. Religious sites should be respected. This was not done by the Palestinians or Jordanians prior to 1967, but then the Zionists did not respect the Palestinians. Any one or two state solution will have to require both groups recognizing the humanity of the other. That is the basic starting point. There is much work to do. Some of the people on your blog should set a better example Phillip.

American Jew seems unaware of the tragic history of Jerusalem when it was divided. From the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 until the Six Day War in 1967, Israel's Arab neighbors governed the Old City of Jerusalem.

The hallmark of their rule was that they destroyed the Jewish Quarter (synagogues, yeshivas, and homes) and banned all Jews from entering the Old City.

Since 1967 and the establishment of Jewish control over the Old City the Jewish State has opened Jerusalem to all people and all religions. Arabs and Jews live side by side and Jews, Muslims, and Christians (who were discriminated against under Arab rule) all practice their religion in a free and secure environment.

Israel has a proven track record of being a just administrator over Jerusalem and it should continue in that role.
