Turning point: Massad said to have gotten tenure at Columbia

Joseph Massad is the Palestinian scholar of Middle East Studies who was the focus of the campaign against criticism of Israel at Columbia that was led by the David Project a few years back. Word has it that his prolonged battle for tenure is over, and he has gotten tenure. A friend at Columbia tells me that Massad, who is in Cairo on leave, emailed friends to say that he had been approved; and that his appointment was pushed by provost Alan Brinkley, a mensch who also stood up for Rashid Khalidi last fall.

I read about this over at the Angry Arab. I don't know if it is a "turning point" but it has raised some eyebrows that this marks a breakpath in academia.

  2. Margaret says:

    Indeed! Yea, Columbia!

  3. And, naturally, Martin Kramer in his "Sandbox" has raised the alarm about this "crime."

Long time coming. It's not clear if it breaks a path, though. Massad has published scholarly studies on non-contentious topics. The path clears when Finkelstein is offered a post somewhere.
