Today Palestinians across the Middle East, including inside Israel, commemorated al Nakba. Arabic for “the catastrophe”, al Nakba refers to the ongoing displacement and dispossession of the Palestinian people that began in 1948 with the founding of the state of Israel. Nakba Day is a time to remember Palestinian history and mark the ongoing struggle of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and lands. Because this is such an important time of national unity and resistance, it should come as no surprise that Israel wants to make it illegal.
From Reuters:
Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s party wants to ban Israeli Arabs from marking the anniversary of what they term “the Catastrophe” or Nakba, when in 1948 some 700,000 Arabs lost their homes in the war that led to the establishment of the state of Israel.
The ultranationalist Yisrael Beitenu party said it would propose legislation next week for a ban on the practice and a jail term of up to three years for violators.
This is reminiscent of the pre-Oslo Israeli policy of banning Palestinian flags. That was an effort to quash Palestinian national resolve. It failed, and this will too. Lieberman, and the Israeli leadership, need to understand that criminalizing al Nakba will not make it go away. They have no choice but to confront Israeli history; there won’t be peace until they do.

There won't be peace until people like you confront reality.
Yeahhh son
A really stupid move. Imagine if a post-Nuremberg state banned any holiday commemorating historical jewish catastrophe. It's truly a mental defect to not see the parallel.
This is why I appreciate the rise of Avigdor Lieberman and Yisrael Beitenu. They're honest about what they really want (which is the same thing the other major Israeli parties want, really, but most of them won't admit it), and they won't play the traditional Israeli game of saying ambiguously positive things about peace but never following through on them. The more power they have, the sooner the essential conflict in Israel/Palestine will be brought to a head — which has to happen for any real progress to be made. It's not a nice way to make progress, but it seems to be the only way that will actually work. Kadima, Labor, or Likud would keep the wheel spinning a lot longer, perpetuating the injustice indefinitely while making meaningless pleasant noises about a peaceful solution as needed. From this point of view, it's a real shame that Yisrael Beitenu didn't win the election by a landslide, but realistically their third-place finish was about the best they could have done.
THE ISRAELI PEACE PLAN: No Palestinians and No Iran
I understand that the palestinains have a law in that any arab caught selling land to a Jew is to be put to death.
Five years ago when my mother was fundraising for Rebuilding Homes, she was invited to a local Jewish Renewal congregation here in Oakland, CA, for Nakba/Israel Independence Day. She reported that the rabbi sat all the children around and told them "what is independence and a holiday for some, was a disaster for others." Then a description of the disaster (Nakba) ensued. Would the state of Israel therefore outlaw Jewish commemorations of the nakba conducted in synagogues?
"I understand that the palestinains have a law in that any arab caught selling land to a Jew is to be put to death." After Gaza 2008-09, who would blame them?
There's a good reason for that law. Land always passes from Palestinians to Jews, but never the other way, from Jews to Palestinians. Not ever. So with all of the land confiscations that the government of Israel is responsible for, Palestinians don't want their own people helping the Israelis to completely deprive them of all of their land.

There is zero chance of such a law passing. Typically, Weiss discusses it like it's a actually going to happen.
Since there was never a palestinian people nor a state of palestine the whole thing is ridiculous. They have no real identity so they invented the 'Naqba' which is somewhat close to sedition, not in its celebration, but in its declaration against the state they now live in and enjoy all the benefits and should be outlawed! Is there a health service, pensiion, child allowance. etc. in Gaza or Ramallah?
There is a good reason for the imposement of capital punishment, to deprive a person of their very breath, for selling land to a Jew. IThat reason is called anti-semitism.
They aren't human beings like us. They have no identity.
And antisemitism's staunchest supporter is Israel. (What a tiresome argument.)
You would prefer, perhaps, to limit the discussion to Eurosabra's vision of the future? It's the internet. You have to share.
Nakba Education vs Holocaust Disinformatsia for Americans
Only tiresome to those who disere to see it flourish. That would be you?
Zionist Jews butcher Arabs and cry antisemitism. Exhibit A: Jacobwolf aka Chris Barrel.
A land without people for a people without land? A "people" is plural for any group of human beings. The identity criteria varies according to the speaker's agenda. Evidence is selected or ignored accordingly. What is selected is blessed as "real." What is not is deemed a mere invention, a fabrication. Time itself may be a selected factor, that is, a certain point of time is selected as being determinative, for example, was there always Germans, or Americans, etc? Did the Germans invent their own conscious collective identify or did it evolve though interaction, for example, with the Romans? It was not long ago that there was no German in the modern sense, but rather just a collection of mini monarchies. Ditto, England "invented" Americans by its actions at least as much as the growing sense amongst the King's subjects in the colonies that they were different in significant ways from those on the British homeland. Even sexual identity has a time element because under the biblical narrative, Adam existed for a time without Eve. The real purpose of the political term "peoplehood" is to gain the human world's recognition by creating a story, a narrative. Here's a few snippets from Atzmon–notice how applicable it is to both The Holocaust (Shoah) and the Nakba: "Identity is a very tricky concept. It can very mean many opposing things and at the same time it can mean nothing. One may start to wonder about one’s identity only when one feels he is under the threat of losing it. Within the concept of Jewish identity, Jewish suffering and victimhood are set as unique Jewish symptoms. For a Jew to celebrate his identity means to celebrate Jewish pain, to visit and to revisit the agony. To be a Jew is to religiously believe in the Holocaust. To be a Jew is to be chased. To be a Jew is to be able to find an anti-Semite under every stone and behind every corner. To be a Jew is to chase senile Nazis into their graves. Forgiveness doesn’t seem to attract the leading proponent of Jewish identity politics. Within such a notion of Jewish identity and bearing in mind the Zionist expansionist project, it is hardly surprising that Jewish collective ideology had become a bipolar schizophrenic volley between Victimhood and Aggression. The Israeli Historian Shlomo Sand elaborated on the phantasmic qualities within the Jewish historical discourse in his recent book ‘When And How The Jewish People Was Invented’. Sand manages to demonstrate beyond any reasonable doubt that the Jewish people never existed as a 'nation-race', they never shared a common origin. Instead they are a colourful mix of groups that at various stages in history adopted the Jewish religion. Similarly, at a certain stage in history they had invented their national identity. As we sadly realise, the phantasmic qualities at the core of Jewish identity politics do not stop Jews from celebrating their aspiration at the expense of the Palestinian people. The Jewish narrative is the art of making a story. It has no commitment to facts or truth. The Jewish identity is a form of tactical detachment. It is a methodical strategy that creates an imaginary symbolic order with a clear pragmatic agenda. he Jewish historical plot is not about telling the truth. Instead, it is all about the making up a ‘truth’ that would fit the current tribal needs. There is an old joke about Marxist ideologists. It tells that once the facts do not fit into the Marxist determinist textbook, all you have to do is to change the facts. Jewish identity discourse is employing exactly the same strategy. Facts and lies are produced as we move along. In short, all you have to ‘tell her’ is that sometimes we need to be innocent victims, other times we plunder, kill, throw WMDs. It all depends what serves our tribal interests best at a given time. From a Jewish identity political perspective, the Jewish nation is a tribe of very many innocent Anna Franks. In the light of the Israeli propaganda that presents the Jewish state as a vulnerable innocent blameless entity, the devastating reality of Israeli brutality leads towards the inevitable cognitive dissonance. The more the Israelis love themselves and their delusional phantasmic innocence, the more they are frightened that people out there may be as sadistic as they themselves proved to be. This behavioral mode is called projection. " http://uprootedpalestinians.blogspot.com/2009/05/...

for some reason the full url won't post. I will try again with just the balance of the url so you will have to string it together: /gilad-atzmon-from-victimhood-to.html
I agree with jacobwolf. We need to toss out the word "anti-semitism" whenever facts get in the way otherwise how would we survive, keep our continuity? The word is as precious to us as our welfare dole from the Americans and Germans in each generation.
I would prefer an unbiased discussion. What about the Hebron Massacre, Hadassah Massacre, Kfar Etzion, Sbarro's Massacre, the Passover Massacre. The list of Arabs slaughtering Jews is very long, but totally ignored by the "progressives". Jewish blood is cheap to them. Phil and his crew also ignore 800,000 Jews expelled with only the clothes on their backs, from Arab countries. When are they going to be reimbursed? Why are the "Palestinians" the only group in the world that the descendants of refugees are considered refugees?
You can be blind or chose to be deaf, but 700,000 people existed and lived in the land that you chose to ignore. If they didn't exist, then all US govt, including Bush, many Israeli govts, including the last one under Livni, have been pushing the idea of a PALESTINIAN state. Were they seditious. I find your comment about availability of health services, pensions, child allowances to be ridiculous, it implies that you can BUY any people if you offer these services. I guess you're rich since you think money can buy even national identity. open your eyes, and your ears.
Hitler was honest too, just wasn't right.
Because you invaded their lands. They didn't invade 'your' lands. You have no lands.
The proposal of this law furthers the idea of the necessity of Israel as a Jewish state, which is clearly going to be a plank in the two-state solution. The new Ambassador's writings further this concept. It's part of the hard-line strategy that will be brought to bear in the peace process.
Morris's racist passages are no different than standard NAZI tracts of that period. Does he really need to have someone point that out to him? Why isn't he attacked more as a run-of-the-mill racist? And Yale U Press publishes him… Obviously we have double standards operating here.
To the victors go the spoils and the re-writing of history books. Suppressing thought about the Naqba will come in very handy when Palestine has finally been completely cleansed.
never a Palestinian The memoir 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom' refers to the Palestinians. The leaders of the Saudi Arab rebellion sought the Palestinians' advice. Denying Palestinian national identity is the same psychic act as denying the Holocaust, and must be condemned as racist.
Christian arabs butcher Islamic Arabs and the Muslem whine that the Jews did it.
