Max Blumenthal writes: On the eve of President Barack Obama’s address to the Muslim world from Cairo, Egypt, I stepped out onto the streets of Jerusalem with my friend Joseph Dana to interview young Israelis and American Jews about their reaction to the speech. We encountered rowdy groups of beer sodden twenty-somethings, many from the United States, and all eager to vent their visceral, even violent hatred of Barack Obama and his policies towards Israel. Usually I offer a brief commentary on my video reports, but this one requires no comment at all. Quite simply, it contains some of the most shocking footage I have ever filmed. Max and I went on to the streets of Jerusalem at ten o’clock on a Wednesday to ascertain the feelings of the young population about Obama’s upcoming speech in Cairo. As is often the case, the streets of central Jerusalem were not filled with native Israelis but American Jews. Doubtlessly anyone who has visited Jerusalem has encountered the droves of American Jewish kids that are sent to Israel to study for a period of time from Teaneck or Westchester. We asked people a simple question, “What do you think of Obama and Israel?” Most of the people that we talked to were dual American Israeli citizens. The answers in this video reflect the education and worrisome perspectives that many American Jews harbor towards Israeli politics. The sense of entitlement that the American Jewish community has when it comes to Israeli policy is on full raw display in the words of these young adults.
Based on our interviews these people were from high socio economic backgrounds and had developed thoughts about current Israeli politics. The question is why more journalists are not covering this story. All you have to do is walk the streets of Jerusalem and you will find dozens of people that harbor the same beliefs. As a resident of Jerusalem, I can say that the people represented in this video are not members of a fringe group or simply drunk college kids. These people reflect the sentiments shared by many people in this country and this city. These people and their families are the core of the opposition to meaningful peace between Israel and her neighbors. This is what Obama is up against.

I may be a sucker, but I doubt a person who put her career on the line for the sake of others is an "actress"–there are few actresses in Hollywood or out here walking amongst us in the real world who would put their careers on the line for anything. The matter is not as simple as it seems, and there are many examples I can think of of high-minded people with despicable beliefs or practices: Jefferson for one had some high ideals which he worked to put into practice, he also owned slaves. It is not so easy to put people into categories of "good" and "evil" unless you have a black and white view of the world (not saying that you do). Perhaps the simultaneous embrace by some Jews of liberalism and racist Zionism is an example of Hannah Arendt's "banality of evil" where seemingly decent people can believe or do horrible things.

I used to find Max Blumenthal's schtick entertaining but now its just getting old, and frankly offensive. If I wanted to – I could go any black neighborhood and bate drunken teenagers and film hours and hours of selective footage spouting homophobic and idiotic statements. Would the outrage then be directed at me or them? Someone could go to Muslim communities and bate their teenagers on issues such as what they believe about Jews, Gays, Women – and come up with hours and hours of offensive footage – in fact Max Blumenthal recently did a film in the West Bank and interviewed self-identified Hamas members – but didnt bate them in any way shape or form and simply asked them about their opinions in a very respectful manner. It would have been ridiculously easy to bate them and then come up with selective footage portraying these people as crazy. In fact, Juan Cole said the same exact thing about MEMRI and had a very public spat about it. Thats candid camera, not journalism.

I am no great fan of Obama but his first step in calling for an end to the settlements is a good start. However, it's ultimately up to the American people to make sure we put real financial pressure on Israel to truly work for peace and accept the humanity of the Palestinians.

Depends on how you define "good for America". I would suggest that the expense of supporting our vast military and the cost of our military adventures in other countries far outweighs the benefits of these things. We pay more for our military than all other developed countries, and we have a much shittier education system, and a totally inadequate health care system as compared to the other developed countries (if it can even be called a system). I don't think these two things are a coincidence. A lot of the money that we've been spending on the military also could have been used to get us started on our green economy, which would have been far more lucrative in the long run, and a lot less destructive than pumping it into the military, and it would have freed up much more money for use in ways that would benefit the US taxpayer. Anyone who is actively promoting the welfare the US taxpayers pay to Israel, or actively promoting the use of the US military to fight Israel's fights is acting one hundred percent against the interests of the US taxpayers.

Most non-Jews that I met wound up working on kibbutzim for reasons other than meeting Israelis or going through the Israeli experience. For most, it's just an excuse to drink, go to the beech, meet other volunteers and use as a springboard for trips to Egypt. I would think that most have little contact with Israelis, other than occasional sex. Also, for what it's worth, non-Israeli Jewish volunteers on the kibbutzim I visited often lived in special housing with the kibbutzniks, in order to convince them to stay. The line between Jews and non-Jews was made clear.

I would say most European countries, and definitely Canada. None of them is perfect, but they're all head and shoulders above the US in that regard.
The jury is not at all still out about the ability for new technologies to supplant fossil fuels. In the countries where the national resources have been utilized for getting their green economy started, they are making very good progress toward making it a reality. The US is way behind the curve in this area, and rather than being the leaders to whom everyone else must catch up (and rather than reaping the economic benefits of being such), it is other countries that are leading the way, and it is those countries that already are, and will continue to reap those benefits, both economically as well as being less dependent on waging resource wars to supply their energy needs.

yes and no. You are right that european countries, particularly germany, have led the way in alternative energies…especially solar. This is impressive considering a fact i read recently…every state in the US including Alaska gets more sunshine than Germany! So yes..we are woefully behind. But NO…the evidence does not indicate that all of these technologies used to their maximum extent will get an exploding population anywhere NEAR sustainable levels in the absence of fossil fuels. This is a gigantic crisis that for now, is growing worse by the day and has no available answer. I'm not saying there aren't smarter and stupider approaches to our dilemma, but there is no answer even on the horizon for how we are to survive in anything resembling our current societal form, once fossil fuels are spent. If we could get fusion to work…. but that is an awfully big if.
