Should Americans have a vision of Israel as a ‘democratic Jewish state’?

Debra DeLee of Peace Now has a great letter in today's Washington Post telling Obama to keep up the pressure on the settlements:

First, a settlement freeze is absolutely necessary, both to demonstrate
that Israel is approaching negotiations in good faith and to avoid
reaching a point of irreversibility beyond which the creation of a
Palestinian state would simply be impossible. Second, a freeze is
achievable, both politically and legally, and if any Israeli government
could enforce such a measure, it is a broad-based, right-wing coalition
such as Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's government. Third, the
Palestinians have been taking steps to fulfill their commitments under
the "road map" for a peace agreement.

But the letter ends with this line:

The Obama administration is not "posturing" but rather — at long last
– doing the right thing for the future of Israel as a democratic
Jewish state and for Israel's future relations with its neighbors.

I wonder: is this how progressives want to imagine Israel's identity? Will young people sign on to this vision? If we said that the U.S. was a democratic Christian state, would some see those ideas as contradictory? (Myself I am not opposed to Israel being a Jewish state on the idea that many states discriminate on a religious/ethnic basis. But I don't think that's anything to write home about; and, not in my name.)

I thought Jews were against affirmative action so that they could keep their high enrollment rates in Ivy League schools – you know, through academic achievement.

  2. Michael says:

Wouldn't political Judaism mean pushing halacha into US laws? Though it would be rather contradictory to actual Judaic tradition in that Jews don't believe gentiles should follow Jewish law because they are not commanded to. The last time I checked, representation in our legislative bodies is determined by the votes, not someone's ethnic/religious percentage of the populace.

  3. Michael says:

I call a lot of my friends rednecks, and we all went to Jew school together. We mostly used that term after we worked together at a Jewish camp as the camp crew. We also called our gentile boss a redneck, because he was a redneck – a cracker who works outside a lot while tanning his exposed skin, aka the neck.

  4. Michael says:

My friends and I call each other "Jew" and "kike" probably like black people use the N-word. My friends also call me the N-word and "African American" because my mom was born in Africa. We also call each other rednecks because we did redneck jobs – jobs outside that turned our necks red. And on the rare occasion I do talk about non-Jews among my circles, it's not about their gentile "power", it's about meeting new people.

  5. Michael says:

Oh poor Todd, lost his scholarship because a Jew got better grades in school.

  6. Michael says:

If all the Christians behaved like the Jews, perhaps we would have cured cancer already, but no, they had to go online all day writing about how the Jews are so powerful, instead of making medical breakthroughs through study and hard work.

  7. Todd says:

Did he call you a kike or a yid? Would it have been okay if he had?

  8. Michael says:

If the entire galaxy wanted us dead like the mighty Romans tried to do, you would think we would have been dead, but no, the Roman Empire is gone, and we are still here. Just like everybody else who tried to eliminate us. Mark Twain was a smart guy. You should listen to him.

  9. Strahl says:

    Oh no you dih-ent!

  10. Strahl says:

Yea but tons of groups are still around today after all this time. And every Empire falls. Now Jews have a min-empire in the ME. And the laws of historical gravity predict it shall fall. Considering our progressive our world has gotten, in the grand scheme of things (even though Israel is essentially a racist/fascist State founded by kicking out the indigenous population and concocting some bullshit comic-book story about 'returning' after 3000 years of waah waah waah), what's happening now is much better than hundreds of years ago when tribal Jews would have just committed open genocide of the Palestinians had they the opportunity. And considering all the problems Israel is having, this conflict is going to shift into a civil rights struggle and ultimately 1-State. The pressure is going to build more and more – the momentum after Gaza doesn't just fade AND Zionists clearly do not want the Palestinians in any part of their 'pure volkish Eretz Israel'. Thanks for that by the way. We should thank you poor-poor-struggling-Joan-Peters-Jews for handing the Palestinians their country back after 3000 years of lulz.

  11. Michael says:

Really? Have you seen the recent Nobel Prize winners list? We are still kicking in science etc. This is why I'm hot this is why I'm hot, I"m hot cuz i'm fly, You ain't cuz your not

  12. Strahl says:

Your logic helps the Palestinians, because it's the Palestinians who are subjected to far more terrorism by Israel than vice versa. And after Israel comes in and blows up a school or hospital or murders a 12 year old at a non-violent protest – the Palestinians still have to deal daily with those inbred settlers and their inbred buddies in the IDF (which is essentially all of them). The violence against Israel is vastly less than that perpetrated against the Palestinians by the IDF, and after these acts of violence are done, the Palestinians still have the Occupation/the discrimination/etc. There is no comparison. The Palestinians and NOT the Israelis, are the ones who are suffering the most – by far. Proving my point about the need for Zionists to concoct this image of Jewish imagehood. It's very cynical how right now Zionists are building this image of Shalit like some kind of hero? Kind of like Neda. The reason it's easy to do this is because he's just one dude. It's easy to romanticize that image since it's more personal. But there are thousands of Palestinians held unjustly in Israeli prisons. 100s of minors. Blah blah blah = no comparison. Like I said before, if Americans educated themselves on this conflict they would spit on Zionists. It's very natural in our society today to hate colonialism. We do not accept this behavior. And the cynicism of Zionism is another reason to be disgusted with people like you too. We know better.

  13. AnaSanchez says:

You left out China, and the Sudan, and Saudi Arabia too. Oh please, let's change the subject!

  14. Shinfo says:

"Didn't you see that Al Jazeera video about an Arab woman buying an apartment in one of these colonies/settlements?" You mean the among hundreds who managed to get approval? I also saw a story about a guy who won the lottery.

  15. Shinfo says:

"Yea, why aren't there any resolutions about Hashemite occupation of 3/4 of Palestine?" Maybe because you need to have an occupation to before you get a resolution denouncing it. In the diaspora, there's a principal known as cause and effect.

  16. Shinfo says:

If you're talking about the original Israelites, that's because the Romans left most of then in Palestine, where most of them subsequently converted to Islam and Christianity and became the Palestinians. As of you, you're probably an Ashkenazim who's ancestors converted to Judaism.

  17. PlanetMichelle says:

I think you missed the point. It's not about winning. Israel is as solid on it's own as a desert mirage.

  18. PlanetMichelle says:

Yes, it's interesting that "winning" for Israel's enemies is just a matter of not disappearing. As in still being there when it's over. Because Israel has no substance and is the only statelet subject to vanishing. Can it be any more *clear*? heh.

  19. PlanetMichelle says:

A gift given by whom, tommy? God? The Western powers? Zionist Nazi fascists? Don't tell me God because that's what every thief says so that he can sleep at night. Anyway, Israel needs to change it's name to Palestine. Change the ID cards and that's that. The Palestinians can say "thanks for remodeling my house" and move in. It's too late for Israelis to be "humble" and still call themselves Israelis.

  20. PlanetMichelle says:

    like they did in Europe.

  21. Madoff says:

And the US government, except for about five members of Congress.

  22. paulmalfara says:

Michael, I think I saw you in Max Blumenthal's video in Jerusalem. Posing American Jews trying to talk and act black and bad. Sorry, neither description fits you. PM

  23. Citizen says:

Gotcha, syvanen–only Jews should notice Jews, all criticism of US foreign policy and US foreign aid related to Israel = antisemitism, and syvanen always keeps an open mind.

  24. Citizen says:

Todd's correct. Gosh, carnas, facts are stubborn huh? The plaque with the number has been replaced with the new number. Pick up a book once in awhile. History is constantly revised as more facts come to light.

  25. Citizen says:

No. England had the power and authority to give that part of its Mandate and it was named Jordan eventually.

  26. Citizen says:

In theory only, as you know.

  27. patriot says:

sounds like a pretty good portrait of the largest percentage of our GIs, the first half of your definition

  28. volunteer says:

poor white southern men catagory has always contributed the most US soldiers

  29. beanie head says:

now that's a new twist on "some of my best friends are——-"

  30. wall street says:

    or pulling madoffs

  31. Jake in Jerusalem says:

Can you find a reference for that? Or are you just a Koran-bashing antisemitic bigot….?

  32. lovelyisraelis says:

Michael makes my case. "We are still kicking in science etc. " Why don't you tell us about YOUR important contributions to science? You try to ride the coat tails of your superiors with an absurd claim that you have something in common with them. It's quite laughable.

  33. Jake in Jerusalem says:

Idiot and liar. This ARAB FAMILY BOUGHT an apartment in a Jewish neighborhood. It had nothing to do with imaginary "approval". Do you know WHY she moved to a Jewish neighborhood? She was sick of Arab neighbors!!! I know that neighborhood. Even though it is mostly Jewish, the Muslim Mue'zzin wakes up everyone at 4 AM with loudspeakers screeching, in the Islamic tradition. It's hard to get away from Muslims… Europe is discovering this. With President Hussein-Obama in the White House, Americans may discover this before long, too….

  34. Jake in Jerusalem says:

Eternal victimhood is the hallmark of "Palestinean refugees". Some of them live in mansions and drive exotic cars – I see them – but still claim to be refugees, 3 generations later. Your accusations are confused.

  35. Jake in Jerusalem says:

Amman, Aqaba, etc… The Jordanian army, whose officers are exclusively Bedouin, never "Palestinean" occupies the majority of historic Palestine. Yasser Arafat himself declared this. This same army, led by King Hussein (no relation to President Hussein-Obama?) killed nearly 10,000 Palestineans in the single month of Black September in 1970, ending Arafat's first Intifada to liberate Palestine. Arafat then decided (correctly) that it would be easier to get smaller parcels of land from the Jews and gave up (temporarily) on liberating the Jordanian-Occupied East Bank of Palestine. Incidentally, this is why Jordan does NOT want a Palestinean state on it's border, certainly not an armed entity. In the meantime, they are letting the Israelis do the negotiating that they so desperately need for their own survival. As always on MondoLies, bigots ignore the facts. MondBigots.

  36. Jake in Jerusalem says:

What was the name 100 years ago of the territory now called Jordan? Jordanian Occupation of Palestine. Very simple. Still too complicated fro you?

  37. Jake in Jerusalem says:

    1) Tell that to Arafat, who always held that Jordan is an integral part of Palestine. 2) Tell that to Hamas who deny that Israel has a right to exist anywhere. You seem to be VERY ignorant of the history of that period. The Brits (andthe French) CREATED many of the conflicts in the Middle East today. Perhaps they had no choice.. we're talking about ARABS here… it almost MEANS conflicts….

  38. Jake in Jerusalem says:

MondoLies is the HOME OF THE BIG SLUR, specifically againtst Jews. Todd, you are at home.

  39. Jake in Jerusalem says:

Strahl: I didn't even know about this conflict until 2 years ago. It shows in your many ignorant postings. You STILL know nothing about it. Demonstrably so. Strahl: The Jewish community is a minority, yet they have tons of money/power. You ARE a racist, bigoted antisemite. You've demonstrated this many times here. And what about INDIAN minorites who have "tons of money/power"? That is OK, I suppose? But for Jews it isnt'??? Truly a bigot, and a foolish one. Are your parents Hindu or Muslim? Can you tell us abou tMuslim masacres of J ews and Hindus in India – for zillions of years? Or should I? Or was alltof that the fault of , AIPAC, too????

  40. tommy says:

The UN. What the UN did was wrong, but they did it nevertheless. Israel's status as a legitimate sovereign state should empower its opponents of expansion. Israel has a right to exist, but not outside the mandate.

  41. goy (the Other) says:

We see you are not well read, Jake.

  42. Joe in Kansas City says:

How can you know your neighborhood when you are so obviously asleep? Must be exhausting to keep wacking off to those shiksas online–I recommend you merely peruse your old collection of Stalag video tapes.

  43. truth&beauty says:

Why would anyone want to touch a Jew?

  44. Bagel says:

Maybe; we do know that no foreskin is involved–you know, that part of the human body with such a high degree of pleasure cells that get's sold for facial beauty creams, after the hospitals take their fee for doing the barbaric cut?

  45. duddy krawitz says:

They are trying to copy the jews, those Pals.

  46. Michelle says:

And maddofs, and hedge fund instruments

  47. historybuff says:

So, where did all those jews come from again, you know, the ones who took over land Pals had farmed for centuries? My, that's a bigoted question?

  48. Joe in Kansas City says:

You are right. The Brits and the French allowed the jews to take land of the natives that did not belong to the Brits, French, or Jews. This is simply a higher macro version of the court jew and his partnership with the goy elite, at the expense of the masses. Ask Marx.

  49. J-Pimp says:

And the home of the big slur against goys is the whore USA congress.

  50. justasking says:

Is it ok to point out that the Mormons have a significant influence in Utah? If so, why is it antisemitic to point out that Jews have a significant influence in USA foreign policy in the Middle East?

  51. Madoff says:

Have you seen the number of jews on Wall ST who milked the goys and just got bailed out by the goys? They are still kicking ass there too.

  52. planetmichelle says:

What the U.N. did was illegitimate. The Arabs were cheated out of their contract with the western powers in the first place. So then the Jews come in and the U.N draws up a partition that alloted the Jews more than half the land including the valuable coastal strip when they only owned 6% of land, and the Arabs were 90% of the population, what were the Arabs suppose to say, oh darn it? And walk away with the shirts on their backs? Just give away their childrens inheritance and their childrens children and so on? Arabs aren't like that. They will never give up, they will never leave. They will not accept the "offer" of only a portion of what belongs to them and their children. I wouldn't either.

  53. planetmichelle says:

Share | You mean this? Thanks for that link. i wonder if i should vote republican next election. The other Jew moved to the democrats…hehe wonder why. I will just keep shifting from wherever they move to. Last remaining U.S. Jewish Republican Senator loses seat

  54. Thom says:

citizen definitely is. He's a Holocaust denier.

  55. Thom says:

Ed, a higher percentage of Jews voted for President Obama than any other demographic group besides blacks. The reason that so many Jews are in congress is because education, community, and public good are important to us as a culture. Heck, our rite of passage is to get up and read from a book. In Europe, we spent most the last 2000 years restricted to professions where the primary requirements were thinking and negotiating. What do you expect?

  56. Thom says:

In practice as well. Some voters choose to vote for people because of religion, others don't. That is why almost every president in American history has been Protestant.

  57. Thom says:

Yes, one of the few things I dislike about Israel is that in some areas, ultra-Orthodox Jews force other people to obey Jewish law. I agree with Toby (of the West Wing). There is nothing wrong with a religion requiring you to have a beard, it's when not doing so becomes a crime against the State rather than your parents that there is a problem. That is one of the things I like about most Muslims in America (few Muslims here think that non-Muslims should obey Islam) and dislike about some Muslims (the ones that want non-Muslims to obey Islam) elsewhere.

  58. Jake in Jerusalem says:

Actually, I know the Torah and Talmud fairly well. This is why I challenged the previous LYING poster to bring a reference. Why do you call yourself a "goy"? You give them a bad name. Many "goyim" are actually rather intelligent. Unlike you….

  59. Thom says:

I'm against affirmative action on principle (now, it used to be necessary when deliberate racism was keeping out qualified minorities). But the high enrollment rates of Jews in the Ivy League aren't affected much by affirmative action. Most Jews are considered "white" these days. Many Jews are for affirmative action just because we tend to be liberal. A society that respects the rights of all citizens is a good thing.

  60. Jake in Jerusalem says:

    1) I am that neighborhood often. 2) Dhimmi Infidel residents are woken by SCREECHING ISLAMIC SHEIKS AT 4 AM every night of the year, blaring from a neighboring hood. 3) The level of your posting fits MondoLies to a tee. Base, worthless, ignorant, bigoted, antisemitic. You merely prove all my points.

  61. Thom says:

That they have influence? Sure. The fact that your ilk usually follows it up with insinuations that it is a conspiracy, or that we are disloyal to America is where the anti-Semitism comes in.

  62. Jake in Jerusalem says:

History Buff? You reveal your ignorance of history here. Fully half of all Jews in Israel are refugees (or descended from) of Jews who were kicked out of ARAB COUNTRIES in which they had lived, in some cases since Roman Times. e.g. Iraq, which had the oldest school in the world, a Jewish Yeshiva. As for Pals farming land for centuries, you are dreaming!!! Under the Ottoman Turkish Empire, the Land of Israel was a waste land, where Jews lived in poverty and Arabs didn't bother with AT ALL. They never built anything there, no cities, no religious sites, no infrastructure, nothing. ARABS ACTUALLY MOVED INTO ISRAEL when Jews started building a real economy after WW I and the end of the Turkish Empire. Arabs were looking for jobs with the Jews, seeing as Arabs are (still) incapable of building a real economy. And you call yourself a history buff???? History BUFFOON, more like it…

  63. Jake in Jerusalem says:

Joe, you are reprehensible and moronic. I feel quite comfortable ignoring you. So does everyone else.

  64. Thom says:

Good God, given some of the tripe I have seen here, what did she say (in general terms, not gory details) that got deleted?

  65. Thom says:

Wasp stands for White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. According to Strahl, he is none of those things.

  66. Jake in Jerusalem says:

Read STrahl' s words. Read STrahl's other postings. Strahl is avile antisemite (apparently a young and very ignorant one,t oo.) Jews are a minority YET theyy have too much money?????? Jealousy? Conspiracy? Bigotry? How about this one? Blacks are a minority in the USA/ WHy is a BLACK sitting it he WHite HOuse? Or does that ounds OK to you, too???

  67. edwin2 says:

Well – a link would be good for an assertion like this. On the other hand – Holocaust denial is all the rage. 6 Million any one? What! The other 5 million don't count?

  68. edwin2 says:

Is there a Jew alive who can actually document that one of their relatives lost land 2 thousand years ago?

  69. Shingo says:

    1. For those of us who have a job, 4 am has always been morning, not night. 2. All your points ARE base, worthless, ignorant, bigoted, and seeing as you hate Arabs, antisemitic.

  70. Shingo says:

Jordan did occupy parts of Palestine, not anymore.

  71. Jake in Jerusalem says:

I merely point out how Arabs and Muslims actually behave. Seeing as I live right next to them and see them every single day, I should know… That this isn't complimentary is their own fault. You can't blame ALL of Islam's embarassments on the Jews…..
