A rally was held this evening protesting the arrival of the US envoys in Israel. Members of National Union, Likud and Israel Beiteinu led the crowd, which included Kahanists wearing t-shirts saying "Kahane was right," referring to Meir Kahane’s ideology of violence against all who stand in the way of the constant expansion of Jewish territory.
The people that attended the rally think that occupying another people and chanting racist slurs at the first black president of the United States (who was elected by a majority of American Jews who support him) is their expression of freedom and democracy. As a humanist and a pragmatist, it can feel very uneasy and unsafe in this country.
While the people opposing settlement expansion get no coverage in the media, those supporting it get plenty. As we were filming the event numerous people asked us detailed questions about where we are from and what we planned on doing with the footage. It was striking that MK Michael Ari made a special point to thank Arutz Sheva, the Israel National News. The coverage they put out is fine, but our attempt to show the world their racism is definitely a no-no. Their relative self-awareness added a new layer to our understanding of settler insanity.
Most people we talked to did not hesitate to attack Obama and his administration, of which many are Jews themselves. The general atmosphere of the rally was that Obama is a Muslim and a racist who denies the Jewish people their right to control the Land of Israel. When asked about American aid to Israel, most replied that this was a separate issue.

We give them billions of dollars worth of military and economic aid as well as many freebies such as military technology and equipment, and this is is their way of saying thanks: denigrating the American people and hoping for their demise. Do the words “go fuck yourselves, ingrates,” mean anything to these people? They accuse our Israel-first president of being anti-Israel because he has engaged in some staged “confrontation” with Netanyahu to bullshit dumb-ass American liberals into believing that he isn’t Israel’s bitch. Unfortunately, some of the crazies in Israel are equally persuaded that anything less than 100 percent unquestioned support for Israel amounts to America taking some kind of stand against Israeli intransigence on settlements and everything else.

Sean, not that same isn’t a natural reaction, and in fact I have sensed a tremendous ingratitude on the part of the Israeli political elite too, but if you read the comments to relevant articles in Israeli papers I think you’ll conclude that such ingratitude isn’t really shared by the common folk over there. Surprised and indeed delighted me when I first started doing such reading.
Just like we’d cringe for others to assume to know our thinking and emotions from what they see of politicians and national loudmouths, the Israelis do too. People are people.

I think it pays to put this incident in a bit of historical context. This isn’t the first time that Israeli behaviour has bewildered Americans. I was rereading Desch a coupla nights ago and found this passage quoted from Gerald Ford’s memoirs:

A particularly egregious error: Arutz Sheva is not “the Israel National News”; it’s a privately owned right wing radio station. If you can’t get the basic facts right, everything you say is worthless.
It’s also worth pointing out that the demonstration was attended by 1,500 people. Not exactly a mass rally. If you want to take this as representative of Israeli public opinion, how about a good ole Sarah Palin rally to show everyone the true nature of the American public?

Once in a while I will hear someone, not public figure but an ordinary citizen, say something about the US will have a “race war” one of these days. The people I hear make this remark aren’t even what you would call racist. And they aren’t even refering to a black- white. It’s more that they are sensing a breakdown in all ‘balance” in the US government that affects society.
They are taking in all the ‘pandering’ by politicans to special “groups” and it swirls around in their heads… they see the political pandering to jewish blocks, hispanic blocks and etc. and how “policies” are made for various ‘special’ groups..and not only that, but they feel they are footing the bills for the special treatment of these special groups while being left out of any consideration themselves.
Most of them absorb this “feeling” or get this impression from listening to the politicans and haven’t really any idea of the many more orwellian things going on. If for instance they were given a list of all the ‘special’ congresional vehicles the politicans have created like the Republican Jewish Col. or the Congressional Friends of India or the Hispanic Congressional Col. and assorted other organizations that elected US officials belong to in congress that are for the purpose of representing some foreign country’s interest or some special ethnic group…well they would be dumbfounded…outraged.
Two things have been at work for a long time that caused this …first the politicans started “targeting” niche groups to get votes and money; jews,hispanics,evangelicals, etc .. giving them promises of special treatment in return for votes and money. Then these special niches became empowered by this pandering and formed blocks to “demand” legistation and favors by threatening politicans with withholding the “Jewish vote” or the “black vote” or the “hispanic vote”, etc. etc..
Taxpayers have been supporting a rouge outlaw country,Israel, because of the Jewish niche. We have seen ‘ illegal’ immigrants” elevated” , when their first act was to break the immigration laws of this country, to a group that is somehow more ‘deserving’ than the average US citizen, even though they are just ‘economic’ refugees, not war refugees whose lives are under threat.
Now we don’t have legistation for the ‘country’, the population’, we have laws and legistation and spending bills for these various groups who now don’t ‘ask’ for “equal’ right or treatment they ‘demand’ “exceptional” treeatment. They don’t feel gratitude to the US , they feel they are somehow “owed” this special consideration. How they came to that conclusion I can’t understand except that once again it’s the power the politicans gave them. All these groups have a mantra similar to the Jewish mantra…”Is It Good For” the jews, latinos, cubans, ad nausum”..”Not” is it good for the country as a whole.
Even though most of us consider the Glen Beck types and their “revolution” followers radical and not too bright ..they are “feeling and sensing” the inequality and imbalance I have described in this governing by greasing the special “sqeaky wheels” and ignoring the mostly quiet masses.
Add to this the still gowing wealth inequality and you have the makings of a eventual race,ethnic, wealth war. I don’t think a “civil war” is on the immediate horizen. It’s needs more outrages heaped on it which I have no doubt the politicans will supply. The quiet masses will have to lose even more and wait till they have the proverbial nothing left to lose before they become a mob. But one thing is for certain, the USA is no longer a “union” of the ‘one from many’ acting together for the common good. It’s now just a land masses of competing ‘tribes’
and eventully the tribes are going to go at each other…if nothing changes and I certainly don’t expect the politicans that fostered this to change it.
I just don’t see why anyone would defend these land grabbing Jews. The fact is, Jews have been problematic wherever they have been throughout history, Zionism being the just the latest incarnate.
