Earlier today we posted Netanyahu's equal-opportunity-sounding talking point, that Arabs can buy property in West Jerusalem, so why can't Jews buy in East Jerusalem? Well Lara Friedman at Peace Now blows the argument out of the water:
The problem with this argument is that it isn’t true. Israeli
lawyer and Jerusalem expert Daniel Seidemann sets the record straight
with the following points:
- Virtually all of West Jerusalem is off-limits to Palestinian
residents of Jerusalem in terms of their ability to purchase property.
This is because most of West Jerusalem, like most of Israel, is “State
Land” (in all, 93% of land in Israel is “state land”). Under Israeli
law, to qualify to purchase property on “state land” the purchaser must
either be a citizen of Israel (Palestinian Jerusalemites are legal
residents of the city, not citizens of Israel) or legally entitled to
citizenship under the law of return (i.e. Jewish). This means an
Israeli or a Jew from anywhere in the world can purchase such property
in West Jerusalem, but not a Palestinian resident of the city.
(Technically, by the way, these are actually not purchases but
long-term leases.)
- With respect to the small amount of private land in West
Jerusalem, legally there are no limitations on Palestinian residents of
East Jerusalem purchasing in such areas. Similarly, there are no legal
limitations on Palestinian residents of Jerusalem renting in West
Jerusalem. However, Danny (who is extremely familiar with East
Jerusalem and its residents) does not know of a single case of a
Palestinian resident of Jerusalem residing in West Jerusalem, either
through purchase or rental of property. (This is distinct from Arab
citizens of Israel, a small number of whom do live in West Jerusalem).
The reasons for this are social, cultural, and economic, and as far as
State Lands go, legal.
There's a lot more there, at Friedman's post. But golly, this all makes me hanker for one democratic state!

Peace now must register as a foreign funded entity. Anyway thanks to their maps they shows the blooming Jewish settlement that won't stop and only increases. Judea and Samaria "West Bank" Is the fastest growing population in Israel
Really, wait! The comment says 1) Israel does not sell state land, to neither Jews, Arabs, Chinese, or anyone else 2) Israel leases state land to all its citizens (Jewish, Arab, Druze, Han…), and to its prospective citizens What it doesn't say is that East Jerusalem residents were offered Israeli citizenship if they renounced the Jordanian one. Basically the same as with the Golan residents. The only difference being that half of the Golan population accepted the offer, but almost no East Jerusalemites. For comparison: Can a Jew (even a Iranian Jew, not an Israeli) buy a property in Ramallah?
AIPAC is not registered as a foreign funded entity, so why should Peace Now? The illegal settlements that Israel are paying for will become homes to Palestinian refugees eventually, so build away.
"For comparison: Can a Jew (even a Iranian Jew, not an Israeli) buy a property in Ramallah?" Would hey want to?
Selling land to a Jew is punishable by death. This according to the laws of the Palestinean Authority. Several Arab real-estate agents accused of selling to Jews have already been executed by the Palestineans. Jews buying land are also gonna get it. Natch. This is a problem for MondoBigots. They don't know if they should support the bigoted Palestinean Authority or the Jihadic Hamas. Great Libertarians both…
Nice lying there Phil. Very skilled. Half-truths of course being the most despicable lies. Natanyahu said that Israel-Arabs could buy land in West Jerusalem. Which is true. The Israeli-Arabs are citizens of Israel and have the same rights as Jewish Israelis (also citizens). The Palestinians are not citizens of Israel. Some countries have restrictions on the ability of non-citizens to buy or rent land in their country. Are there any countries where non-citizens have all the same rights as citizens? So basically what he said was equivalent to "German Americans can buy land in America" in WWII and what you said was, no, the fact that German citizens of Germany can't buy land in America blows the argument that German Americans can buy land out of the water.
You’re a truly pathetic liar, Thom. Anyone – ANYONE – can find out that that is total horsecrap.
But apparently you’re going to tell it like it it is?
What a joker….
OK, what the hell is going on? I replied to this twice already. Phil, are you censoring posts?
Find out that what is horsecrap? If you mean the thing about German citizens in WWII, it was a hypothetical example. I don’t know whether German citizens could buy land.
If you meant anything else, then you are mistaken.
When I was doing business in Jerusalem circa 2001, I remember that some Israeli and Palestinian Arab gals studying at Hebrew University rented an apartment in West Jerusalem. Their neighbors drove them away.
It is always stated by US congressional people and our MSM opinion makers and news anchors that Israel "shares the same values as we do." Is 93% of USA land state owned and regulated? As to private land, in the USA restrictive racial covenants running with the land ("gentleman's agreements") are illegal, unenforceable. Nobody in the USA ever claims that any Arab country shares the same values as we do. Any aid we give them and any contracts related to them are all strictly arms length in nature, with plenty of strings attached. Our interest in them is mainly easy access to cheap oil, a strategic asset of the highest order recognized around the world. Compare our "special relationship" with Israel, a sweetheart deal unique in the world–for Israel; and the USA's misfortune.
Phil, If you want to hanker for one democratic state then WORK to create the conditions by which it would be possible. It is DIFFERENT than the Ali Abunimeh approach through anti-Zionist Palestinian nationalism, somehow morphing into a civil (rather than nationalist) state. It IS comprised of integration of peoples and institutions, NOT of separations by means of BDS, especially academic.
"What it doesn't say is that East Jerusalem residents were offered Israeli citizenship if they renounced the Jordanian one. Basically the same as with the Golan residents. The only difference being that half of the Golan population accepted the offer, but almost no East Jerusalemites. " Exactly right. The progressives totally ignore that fact.
I remember some Jews living in Iran. The Islamic Republic executed them.
I remember some Jews continuing to live in Iran.
It is never going to happen. Most Israelis would fight to the death than be ruled over by Arabs. Just ask some Coptic Christians about their lives are under Arab rule and you will understand why the one state nonsense will never happen.
We ignore it do we? Israel offers citizens of East Jerusalem citizenship in return for them annexing it, and then they pay lip service to the two-state solution, which is quite clear about the status of East Jerusalem. Why not give everyone in the greater Israel/Palestine area citizenship and have a one-state solution.
So, if you want to work towards a one-state solution, you have to ignore Israeli crimes for fear of offending them?
Olmert was giving away almost half of Jerusalem. What would have happened if Abbas didn't do what the Palestinians always do, turn down the offer?
what are you talking about? they steal land in the west bank all the time, whenever they feel like it. they don't bother "paying" for anything!
And Abbas claims he did no such thing. Which of the two liars do we believe?
The test of virtue is power. Israel is a student case book example; and something Truman realized when he said watch out when the underdog becomes the uber hund, apropos of Zionist pressure on him. All documented in the Truman Archives Library. Israelis cannot comprehend why Palestinians oft fight to the death rather than be ruled by Jews. But they expect the Goy World to always understand the the Jews, and play along with them. Unlike Jews, the Western Goys come around to Universal Humanism–always. Otherwise there'd be no Israel state today. And now, if the Zionist regime and its AIPAC allies don't change their tune, there will be no Israel state tomorrow.
Yes, 25,000 of them and they refused cash bribes by Israel to move there. Israel must be the pitts if Jew prefer Iran.
"Most Israelis would fight to the death than be ruled over by Arabs. " Yet, when Palestinians fight to the death to not be ruled and opressed by Israelis, they are terrorists.
you bet! In fact, I hope all of Israel remains intact for the return of the Palestinians. In other words, I hope the place doesn't get bombed or anything. Polish it all up real nice for the next episode.
Yeah yeah that's what you guys say about the European holocaust when we all know the Zionists had their bloody hands in it. Everything you say is a lie. Murderous thieves.
Another variation on the same old double standard. When Jewish Israelis fight its something noble and brave, when Palestinians do the same thing, its "hateful" and "terrorism".
Don't you just love the way the Zionist nutters keep stepping into their own excrement? You'd theink they'd learn by now.
Please cite the source that proves that the laws of the Palestinian Authority determine that selling land to a Jew is punishable by death. "Jews buying land are also gonna get it. Natch. " When they buy. They usually just steal it. Any more lies you can think up Jake?
They told israel to shove their bribery money up their Nazi ass, in point of fact.
they have the power. They don't have to make sense. as Bush said–you are part of the 'reality based community.' Which we reject.
