House weighs bill to condemn Goldstone for giving ammo to ‘enemies of the democratic Jewish state’

The Congress is now considering legislation that would condemn the Goldstone report on Gaza in the most extreme and relentless terms, as an offense of nature and a victimization of Israel–thereby trying to undermine the edifice of international human rights law that has been created in the last 60 years. The resolution even cites the international outcry that the report has generated.

Whereas the `Report of the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the
Gaza Conflict’ is being exploited by Israel’s enemies to excuse the
actions of violent militant groups and their state sponsors, and to
justify isolation of and punitive measures against the democratic,
Jewish State of Israel;

The American Jewish Committee is already urging people to call and write their representatives to support the measure. Maybe you could call your congressperson, too, huh?

And here’s Tony Judt’s appeal to Jews to speak out in favor of Goldstone’s historic report.

    EMERGENCY ACTION ALERT

    Call Congress Now

    TELL CONGRESS TO VOTE NO ON H.R. 867!

    TELL CONGRESS TO RESPECT US AND INTERNATIONAL LAW!

    Members of Congress are considering a bipartisan resolution that officially rejects the findings of the United Nations-commissioned Goldstone Report on Israel’s military offensive against Gaza. The resolution also calls on President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to urge U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice to veto the report in the UN Security Council.

    Congress is expected to vote on the bill – H.R. 867 – by this weekend. It is urgent that you call both your Senators and your Congressperson today and tell them to vote against this bill. You can read the bill here. It ignores the conclusions of the Goldstone Report and simply parrots Israeli government denial.

    Judge Richard Goldstone has challenged the U.S. to substantiate its claim that his report is “flawed.” President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton have made no response. The carefully researched and documented report deserves a response, not a veto. The people of Gaza, who were brutally attacked, deserve a hearing. What message are we sending to the rest of the world when we grant Israel complete impunity?

    Let Congress know this legislation is unacceptable. It is not in the U.S. interest to disregard war crimes. It is not in the U.S. interest to rewrite international law. It is not possible to grant Israel impunity while demanding other nations respect human rights.

    Please call U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and demand the U.S. supports the Goldstone Report in the UN Security Council. Tell Secretary Clinton that a veto of the Goldstone Report would further tarnish America’s image in the world. Contact Secretary Clinton at 202.647.5291.

  2. Queue says:

    Israel is the victim and Goldstone the victimizer? This almost sounds like satire.

  3. Nolan says:

    I don’t know whether to laugh at the ridiculousness of this move by Congress or to cry at the shameless behavior of these so-called representatives.

    This isn’t treason, but CAIR sending internships to Capitol Hill is “terrorist infiltration”?

    WOW.

  4. Taxi says:

    Ain’t nothing new that congress aids and abets foreign criminals.

    And so what if they ‘resolute’ to reject the report presented by judge Goldstone (who has a better reputation than all of congress put together) – yeah so what?!

    Ain’t gonna change anything on the ground over there in the mideast.

    Israel is still hated by it’s neighbors for its crimes against humanity and will be dealt with according to the rules and ‘energies’ of the region – not to what some political prostitute declares today, tomorrow or next year some five thousand miles away.

    You should be here in the mideast right now (am in Beirut) and you will know how inconsequential American influence has become.

    In other words: no one here gives a flying turd what Israel and congress are up to.

    There WILL BE AN UNAVOIDABLE WAR with Israel and everyone is quietly getting ready for it.

  5. Dan Kelly says:

    Meanwhile…

    Israel’s European Lobby

    n their 2006 article “The Israel Lobby,” John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt famously assert, “Other special-interest groups have managed to skew foreign policy, but no lobby has managed to divert it as far from what the national interest would suggest, while simultaneously convincing Americans that US interests and those of the other country – in this case, Israel – are essentially identical.” Having for decades successfully steered policymaking in Washington in a pro-Israel direction, Israel’s American Lobby has more recently turned its attention to Europe. Despite its brief presence in Brussels, it appears to have already had marked success in influencing the nascent foreign policy of the European Union.

    • Nolan says:

      I think Europeans are tired of the lobby’s and Israel’s lies.

      Europe is not the US. Those people have satellite dishes, they are historically more curious creatures than the average American who prefers to watch Dancing with the Stars or follow the back and forth bickering between Republicans and Democrats concerning the health issue.

      What we’re going to see, I believe, is the lobby building on already existing xenophobic elements, albeit marginal, within Europe. The lobby will seek to demonize and vilify everything that is remotely related to Arabs, especially given emerging Islamophobia. By lumping all these groups together, the lobby will try to press European nations on the Palestinian issue. But, I don’t think it’ll work.

      Belgium, Sweden and Norway are already joining the BDS movement. They are also tired of the anti-Semitic accusations for extortion purposes. Germany will most likely be the last bastion of reparation-giving in Europe seeing as Israel still holds Germans accountable for the Holocaust.

      They’re all Nazis, don’t you know? {sarcasm}

      • Taxi says:

        I think your assessment of Euro support for Israeli crimes is right – I would add UK to the list too (their labor unions are already gearing for boycott/divestments of Israeli goods produced on occupied Palestinian lands).

        This kind of maneuver by Aipac I’m afraid doesn’t protect Israel from it’s immediate neighbors. It does however corrupt our very own Constitution – which to me is a most serious crime.

        All of this Aipac writhing and twisting and changing the goal-post to legally enable their crimes will end in the worst kind of backlash in America against the Jewish communities across our nation.

        Insisting on Israeli/Zionist exceptionalism will indeed end up in blood and tears for the American Jewish communities – it’s just a question of time.

        Nobody like a racist – not even if they’ve been victimized themselves in the past.

      • Dan Kelly says:

        “Nobody like a racist – not even if they’ve been victimized themselves in the past.”

        So true.

      • bigbill says:

        @Nolan: “They’re all Nazis, don’t you know? {sarcasm} ”

        Please, they are not all Nazis, nor do race loyal Jews say they are. They are, however, descendants of Nazis, however, and therefore share in the congenital blood guilt of their ancestors. They continue to pay because of their blood guilt. How long will the race guilt last? Don’t know. But as the Chief Sephardic rabbi has clearly stated, Amalek is still around and still damned.

  6. potsherd says:

    So do we see J Street leading the charge against this resolution?

    • Nolan says:

      Good point. Let’s see how serious these guys are, shall we?

      Judge them by their fruit.

      • potsherd says:

        Well, they’re not fully supporting it, at least. The current wording. But theirs is hardly much better. link to washingtonindependent.com

        J Street is unable to support House Resolution 867 regarding the Goldstone Commission report on Operation Cast Lead.

        J Street would be able to support a resolution that:

        · Recognizes the history of bias against Israel at the United Nations, the flaws in the original mandate to the Goldstone Commission and the dangers in pursuing resolutions in multilateral fora with a track record of anti-Israel bias;

        · Condemns the series of one-sided resolutions adopted by the UN Human Rights Council;

        · Expresses support for the people of southern Israel who were traumatized by years of constant rocket and mortar fire as well as for the people of Gaza who are suffering greatly from the effects of both the military operation and the ongoing blockade of Gaza;

        · Correctly acknowledges that the Commission’s original mandate was adjusted by Judge Goldstone himself and accepted by the Human Rights Council to include a focus on the conduct of both sides, and that the report included the first-ever exposure by a UN body of war crimes and human rights violations by Hamas;

        · Calls on both the Palestinians and Israelis to launch independent investigations into their conduct during Operation Cast Lead;

        · Calls on the US government to attempt to defeat in the General Assembly any resolution which unfairly focuses only on Israel and

        · Calls on the US government to state unequivocally that it will veto in the Security Council any resolution which refers charges against Israel and Israelis to the International Criminal Court.

        We urge members of the House to consider changes in the Resolution in line with the positions above and to call for independent investigations by both Israelis and Palestinians, adding their voices to those in Israel such as Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor.

        J Street further urges the Obama Administration to make every effort to oppose and defeat the one-sided and biased resolution that is likely to be presented next week in the General Assembly and to work actively for the adoption of a better, balanced resolution. We urge the United States to make clear that it will use its veto to prevent any referral of this matter to the International Criminal Court.

        Finally, we urge Congress to express support for the President’s efforts to prioritize swift resumption and conclusion of permanent status negotiations. No matter what happens at the United Nations, Israel’s future as a democratic home for the Jewish people depends on achieving a two-state solution before the window of opportunity closes and the Administration must urgently press forward toward a comprehensive regional peace.

    Here’s article entitled ”
    Nuke Gaza“.

    It’s an interesting read.

    • Citizen says:

      Thanks, Nolan. I’d like to see this article suddenly fall out of my daily mail box, and those of all my neighbors across the USA–like that CD that fell out a year or two ago, the one sliming all Muslims as Islamofascists.

    • Citizen says:

      Here’s a good companion article for the one you referenced, Nolan–very depressing, and very scary:
      link to informationclearinghouse.info

    • Dan Kelly says:

      Here’s an article Sabrosky wrote for Mondoweiss back in July:

      link to mondoweiss.net

      I find it both surprising (a little) and disturbing (a lot) when I look at the Middle East to realize that an awful lot of American Jews do not think of themselves as Americans who happen to be Jewish, but as Jews who happen to be living in America, and that as de facto unregistered agents of a foreign government they have caused enormous damage to America at home and abroad, and brought an enormous amount of death and suffering to a lot of people across the region who simply happened to be in Israel’s way.

      “an awful lot of American Jews do not think of themselves as Americans who happen to be Jewish, but as Jews who happen to be living in America”

      That is the question. That, and where do you stand on Israel? (Do you make an exception for Israel versus every other moral and political opinion you hold?)

      • Citizen says:

        I agree; meanwhile here’s a tiny snippet of the usual going on in the heartland:
        link to metrowestdailynews.com

      • Dan Kelly says:

        I don’t pay any attention whatsoever to any charges leveled by the ADL. The ADL and other Jewish organizations have effectively rewritten much of American history by labeling anyone an antisemite who dares criticize their worldview. In fact, if I see that a modern or historical American figure has been labeled an antisemite on, say, Wikipedia, I’ll investigate that person, and read what he or she had to say in complete context. It’s a good way to get some truthful history. (Obviously, I dismiss any truly anti-Jewish hatemongerers).

      • Nolan says:

        American Jews’ views on Israel should carry as much weight as their views on any other state in the world. In addition, Israel’s law of return is discriminatory and anathema to modern democracy.

        Many American Jews speak of Israel and treat Israel as if they are Israeli expatriates who have a deep-rooted connection to the “old country” like Irish Americans or Italian Americans do.

        As such, this bizarre relationship between the two entities needs to be examined and addressed.

    • Chaos4700 says:

      Wow. I agree with Citizen, that article needs some exposure.

  8. Nomi998 says:

    Taxi says, Israel is still hated by it’s neighbors for its crimes against humanity and will be dealt with according to the rules and ‘energies’ of the region.

    No Israel is hated by its enemies because it defends itself against Ruthless and Barbaric Arabs and Iranians.
    Does stupid Taxi not see how these same people treat the Kurds?

  9. Nomi998 says:

    Citizen, you say
    Nazi Germany claimed it was merely defending itself against it’s proclaimed ruthless and barbaric enemies too.

    Show me where before 1939, where Poles, Jews, Russians and French were blowing up Germans in buses, shopping centers and Pizzeria’s.

  10. Nomi998 says:

    Nolan, quoting Jeff Gates would be like quoting David Duke.
    He says in the article, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman may have tipped his Masada hand when he reportedly told Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan that Israel may use nuclear weapons against Gaza.

    Yeah i’m supposed to believe and Islamist like Tayyip Erdogan who says Turkey killed no Armenians in WW1.

    • Nolan says:

      The link you provided below, coupled with your baseless accusation of Erdogan as being an “Islamist” only goes to show who you really are, how much you know and whether or not your arguments carry any weight (they don’t).

      Where are you from by the way?

    • MRW says:

      The people who started and ran the Armenian Genocide were the Bey Brothers of Salonica, according to Ambassador Henry Morgenthau in his 1916 letter about their barbarity to President Wilson (see London Times Archives), and they were Donmeh Jews. And the first president of Turkey, Ataturk, was one of them as well, according to Hillel Halkin, who found this fact written about by a Jewish journalist in an Israeli library. In Hebrew, of course. Check The Forward (Jan 1994) and the New York Sun (July 2007) for Halkin’s articles. This is why no one wants the ADL does not want the Armenian Genocide acknowledged or investigated.

    • marc b. says:

      Brilliant. So you have mastered the cut-and-paste, regurgitating the menu of ‘terrorism’ compiled in the Jewish Virtual Library. Presumably your point is that ‘those people’ are inherently violent, blood thirsty, evil? And what of the history of Jewish terrrorism? Bombs in orange crates; assassination of diplomats; kidnapping and torture of peaceful activists; false flag operations; white phosphorous; intentional targeting of civilian infrastructure; etc. Really, your position, ultimately, is that this is all inevitable, intractable, much too complicated for any debate. And, you have an absolute right to play the world-weary fatalist, you’re just wasting your time here with that pose.

    • David Samel says:

      Nomi – You missed one. On October 12, 1953, when a Jewish woman and her two children were killed when a grenade was thrown into their house in the town of Yehud. Why did you skip this one? Could it be that the IDF responded by sending paratroopers under the command of Ariel Sharon into the Jordanian village of Qibya where they massacred scores of innocent civilians? Ben-Gurion wanted to teach the Arabs that there is a high price to pay for taking Jewish life. Right, and that high price is innocent Arab life.

      In the interest of completeness, don’t you think you should add the Yehud incident to your list? Aren’t you dissing the memory of the woman and her two children, consigning them to historical oblivion? Where did you get this list, anyway? I doubt that you constructed it from your own historical research. Why don’t you contact your source and ask why the Yehud attack was omitted?

    I have emailed and called my rep, Niki Tsongas, and made it clear that an equitable resolution of the I/P conflict is on my short list of ‘must do’ items. She had voted for H.RES.34
    Recognizing Israel’s right to defend itself against attacks from Gaza, reaffirming the United States’ strong support for Israel, and supporting the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, which was all so much horse bleep. It will be interesting to try to gauge whether ‘Gaza’ has yet had any real effect on Congress.

    The very fact the zionist christains and evangewlicas have been aparty to the misinformation on crimes against humanity sustains the effect that no matter what happens there will never be people of these establishments brought to justice..ever. The problems as a whole revolve around one thing ………lies and the most recent atroscity which is a tid bit in comparison to all the many years the slaughter with usa tax dollars has gone on and on and seem to always fade out of context and verbal critisizim when it comes to how the rights of a resistance has even found its way into a report of crimes, since when is defending your legitimate right a crime. There will never be an end untill all jews and zionist are out of the political realm completely. The very economy problems of the world can be directly linked to all the christains and zionists of the world whom will do what ever nessesary to continue as they did when the american indians who are still left to rot in a drunken stupor as the zionist wanted, follow the paths they will lead to the truths and the biggest is that there never was a god to begin with and the high priest of the day thousands of years ago knew exactly how to play into the fold for future control of the worlds populous, which is very evident in evangelicas and the christain zionist of today. Gaza was just the most recent…There are over twenty years of crimes against humanity so why stop the ball on the truths and stay focused on the big picture, then you will see the truth and see how the illigitimate aparthied state reacts then…then will do our economy up just as they always do, and the federal reserve should be dismantled along with the un and the international criminal courts …as they are illlegitimate and actually complicite in the crimes against humanity, war crimes is a wrong title and do not ever forget it.

    As for the NPR interview which allows the lies and deception from such people as those whom put cherry blossoms in the bathroom to cover up the stink, well it will never work, the sh-t will always stink of zionist lies which have dumbed down america for over 50 years, the media must have oversight to the obsurdity and not by the fox guarding the hen house and doing the counting of the eggs….not all of us are stupid in america, too bad people cannot live without the ridiculous lies about there being a god.
    You have all been played and even by you own constituants. deal with it.
