roll over Ben Gurion and tell Jabotinsky the news

Akiva Eldar in Haaretz:

However, the Fatah leadership will inform the Quartet that in light of the failure of the Oslo process, it is abandoning the two-state solution in favor of a single state, from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River, which would grant equal rights to all its citizens.

People worry about abstract constructs instead of focusing on well-being and quality of life.

That’s the paradox of human existence, Nolan. Abstract constructs are generally the tools we, as human beings, use to act, and to therefore bring about improvements in well-being and quality of life. But like any tool, they have other uses too which are less beneficiant when abused.

I wouldn’t discard the value of abstract constructs in shaping dialog and action, Nolan (but then, I’m an artist so I’m predisposed to defend that ideology :) )

One reason to hope that Abbas does quit is to watch the reaction if al-Dweik takes over the job.

But nothing else in the PA is done according to the law, why expect that this would be.

A single state with equal rights to all its citizens… Why am I reminded of what Phil’s wife
(What’s her first name anyway, Phil?) told him on that little walk he mentioned maybe eight or ten articles ago, the one where she simply said, more or less, you gotta go with the flow; exactly as the USA has been doing with its changing demography? There’s a penalty to pay for having real individualism as a high value; it makes you and yours vulnerable to ethnic or racial group action, yes? Identity politics, despite the use of
conceits like “self governing” to describe any group, is not reality after all, but a metaphor, a misleading simile. But it sure is a political factor. That’s why there’s all those polls telling us what % of what group voted for X.

This new op-ed by Eldar is great stuff: link to haaretz.com

The attitude of the average Israeli on the issue of the settlements is one of the effects of a chronic illness threatening the existence of the Jewish State: an inability to walk in the shoes, even for a minute, of their neighbor. What would we say if Abbas were to ask that we agree to the return of refugees to their home in Jaffa? Not much, just a few hundred, temporarily.
