Lawrence Wright authored ‘The Looming Tower,’ which is widely regarded as the definitive account of al-Qaeda. The book is called the ‘bible’ by intelligence operatives. Now what does this text say of the fateful triangle (Israel, Palestine and Islamic militancy). Page 151:
Bin Laden would later say that the United States had always been his enemy. He dated his hatred for America to 1982, when America permitted the Israelis to invade Lebanon and the American Sixth Fleet helped them. He recalled the carnage: "blood and severed limbs, women and children sprawled everywhere. Houses destroyed along with their occupants and high rises demlished over their residents…The situation was like a crocodile meeting a helpless child, powerless except for his screams." This scene provoked an intense desire to fight tryanny, he said, and a longing for revenge. "As I looked at those demolished towers in Lebanon , it entered my mind that we should punish the oppressor in kind and that we should destroy towers in America in order that they taste some of what we tasted."
Though a sentence later Wright says that privately OBL approached members of the Saudi royal family to express his gratitude towards the Yanks, Wright more or less corroborates what American senior military officers now publicly argue. They argue for linkage but not the way neoconservatives once envisioned it: Israel is now a strategic albatross.

Israel should get our security guarantee only at our sufferance. They should be required to make peace, stop stealing from us, spying on us and abusing us, and conform to international law. We need an honest NIE on Israel and an overhaul of our bilateral relationship. This whole thing is getting beyond ridiculous.
Now that more people are getting clued in, or admitting that they are clued in, that Israeli government policies pose a threat to the United States, perhaps more will begin to ask why and how.
The Israeli government is able to maintain policies that threaten American lives and interests because of the Israel Lobby, especially AIPAC. I’ll consider the discourse fully open when some of the major players feel confident enough to publicly make the next obvious observation: the Israel Lobby as it is presently constituted is a security threat to the United States.
Wright is not alone on this assessment. The 9/11 commission stated the same in its report. Even Laden’s original fatwas contain the same linkage. He speaks of very specific acts of atrocities performed by Israel by its enabler, America. It’s very interesting how this connection was made obscure by the general campaign of rendering Islamic militancy as a movement that is inherently at eternal ends with Western values. This was of great utility to the neo-conservative agenda, of course, but the Zionists weren’t far behind in joining this chorus of voices.
Now with Petraeus’ comments threatening to make this information widespread, we have the usual defenders of Zionism, namely Foxman, claiming victim hood pre-emptively by saying that any suggestion of such connection is “anti-Semitic.”
I still find it amazing how anything and everything in the American presidential campaign and policy is up for discussion and scrutiny, while some very inconvenient facts even remotely damaging to Israel’s image are suppressed by the MSM and are marginalized in any debate of the conflict. We must reclaim the direction and content of this debate. It should not be the domain of the criminals and colonialists themselves to determine which terms, facts, connections and assessments are politically correct.

although it is highly satisfying to see israel squirm and kvetch and its right-wingnuts become positively apoplectic, there is a danger as the momentum can become a mindless piling on – no doubt this is what Foxman, Douche (er, I mean Dersh) and the key minders for israel here in the US most fear – the silent majority against israel’s endless warcrimes(with our money and protection) suddenly turn against them – which can happen, rather quickly … the key is that more reasonable leaders need to step forward among the israeli leadership (I agree that it seems to be Ehud Barak that the US favors) to offer a new way and begin – through ACTIONS – to rehabilitate the israeli-US relationship or this could get ugly for jews generally
