It is interesting to note who’s writing about the mind-blowing news that General Petraeus wants to put I/P under his command because the Palestinian grievance is endangering the U.S. Akiva Eldar, Andrew Sullivan, MJ Rosenberg, and Spencer Ackerman all noted the news. it will be interesting to see how the MSM responds.
Meantime, Commentary’s contentions site is freaking out over the developments and quotes Haaretz:
Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, has told the country’s diplomats there that U.S.-Israeli relations face their worst crisis in 35 years, despite attempts by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office to project a sense of “business as usual.” Oren was speaking to the Israeli consuls general in a conference call on Saturday night.
Reuters has Oren calling it a "crisis of historic proportions." Not since 1975 have relations been so bad. He is presumably referring to Gerald Ford’s effort to reassess the relationship. Headed off at the pass by the lobby!!

Yup, I bet Petreaus will have all the same sucess in Palestine he’s had everywhere else.
A sweet-smelling fart is still a fart.
I know. Isn’t that the sad part? As if we have any reason to think the military attacks on civilians would stop if the US military were involved.
The proposal was “dead on arrival.”
But the issue is the fact that he made it. The time has come to challenge Congress: Whose side are you on? What country do you support – Israel or the US?
“The proposal was ‘dead on arrival’…But the issue is the fact that he made it.”
That’s called posturing –it’s a great way for a warmonger with political ambitions to promote his crusade.
Again, doesn’t anyone find it strange that Petraeus’ briefing is only being reported AFTER Israel’s public dissing of the Obama administration?
Remember: the Petraeus slideshow occurred in January. If it’s so hot, why are we hearing about it now, two months later?
You’re read SES. This is Obama and his crew showing up at the game a day late and a dollar short. Petraeus was squelched (whatever his motives) because it was politically inconvenient for the Administration to risk offending a primary source of campaign funding, and only now that Israel took a crap on the Rose Garden lawn are people in the Administration leaking this sort of piss.
Obama and company are totally out of their league. I thought Bush was incompetent (and he is) but at least he knew how to play the game to get what he wanted (which was crime). Watching Obama flounder is just embarrassing.
RE: “A sweet-smelling fart is still a fart.” – Mooser
MY COMMENT: That reminds of the time I was subjected to a barium enema because I made the mistake of revealing (in response to a question) that on occasion when I have a stretch of sub-par ‘stools’ I have to wipe so much that eventually there is sometimes a minuscule amount of blood on the tissue. Lesson learned!
P.S. I realize this is not “proper” dinner table discourse, and trust no one is dining while reading this. In any event, Mooser is to blame!
Hey, you know what they say about not squeezing the Charmin so hard. ;)
The watermark will be if Obama shows some spine, and says to Israel, “You ungrateful bastards want a crisis with us? Have a crisis, then.” Or he sits when Emmanuel and Axelrod tell him to “Sit down and shut up.”
If Obama travelled to Cairo, you have to think his intent was good to start. Obama might get his chance if people start to back him. He’s got a lackey Congress to say the least. When will we hear, Schumer, Fienstein, Boxer or Grayson say that it’s time to change the relationship to accommodate our national interests.
“If Obama travelled to Cairo, you have to think his intent was good to start”
I’d like to believe that, just as I’d like to believe that the Biden incident was what really delayed Obama’s trip to Indonesia.
I’d like to Believe it also.
The Congress is completely irrelevant. By next year it will probably also be Republican, to boot.
And then? Get ready for impeachment proceedings against the President.
Ho-Kay! “Gabriel” (who wrote the wonderful Hasbara by-the-numbers article) weighs in on Petreaus.

The idea that Petreaus had suddenly developed a thinking person’s concern for American soldiers is silly.
“bulemic land-eating disorder” is priceless!
Mooser, I wrote this on Bombshell Petraeus thread. reproducing here.

Donald, I read the JSF report. It’s not complete, and I think they’re getting it wrong. Patraeus’s area, CENTCOM, encompasses all the oil-producing nations. Oil is (1) a strategic national defense issue, and (2) the universal currency.
Those countries are selling to the world’s number one needer (yeah, I just made that word up) of fuel: China. As the US appears weaker and weaker to these nations, the threat of lack of US support becomes a non-issue. They have a big, and to them rational, country they can sell to. It’s close by. It pays its bills. And it doesn’t demand anything of these nations politically other than to deliver the oil.
We only heard one point from that PowerPoint show. We didn’t hear its’ entirety. How can Israel be a threat to our troops in Afghanistan? We need 800,000 gal of fuel per day there, which is delivered at an all-in cost of $400/gal. You name it is engaged in getting that fuel to the nether parts of Afghanistan. When the oil-producing nations decide the US/Israel no-space relationship will endanger their rulership with their own people those oil purchases are going to go to another country than the US; that’s fulfilling their self-interest. China is locking up oil and rare earth (even though it has 97% of the world’s supply of one of them) contracts around the world, including Canada.
The most important thing to the US military is fuel. It is number one.
Re: Gerald Ford
“. The Ford administration backed down from its threat of “reassessment” in 1975 after AIPAC garnered more than 70 signatures from the Senate signaling that Congress would override any presidential attempt to cut back funds. That was the lobby’s first signal victory, accruing to it the “don’t mess with us” reputation it maintains until now.”
